Coil and solid-plate (cast-iron) burners accept a broad range of cookware, while induction is generally faster and more controllable but requires magnetic cookware. The six models below are examples listed in Kitchen Guide 101’s 2026 comparison—not independent lab-tested rankings—so verify the current model, manual, electrical requirements, availability and price before buying.
Choose the heating type before the brand
Coil burners
An exposed electric coil is a simple option for a backup burner, dorm room or occasional extra cooking zone. The reviewed comparison describes coil models as working with a broad range of cookware. Check the individual manual for pan stability, cleaning and clearance instructions.
Solid-plate or cast-iron burners
A solid cast-iron plate also suits readers who do not want induction cookware restrictions. The comparison source describes these models as compatible with a broad range of cookware. Because model-specific heat response, controls and safety features differ, use the manual rather than assuming every solid plate behaves the same way.
Induction burners
Induction uses electromagnetic energy to heat ferromagnetic cookware internally, according to ENERGY STAR. A stainless-steel, cast-iron or enameled pan may work; aluminum, copper and glass generally will not unless they have a magnetic base. Test a pan by placing a refrigerator magnet on its underside: if it sticks firmly, the pan is more likely to work, subject to the appliance manual.

ENERGY STAR says induction transfers about 85% of heating energy to cookware, compared with about one third for gas, and that boiling can take nearly half the time of gas, radiant or coil cooking. Those are category-level statements, citing Frontier Energy (July 2019), not guarantees for any particular portable model. The surface also is not necessarily cool after cooking; ENERGY STAR’s narrower point is that it will not be hot to the touch without a pot or pan in place.
Six portable electric burner models to compare
The following specifications are the values published in Kitchen Guide 101’s 2026 comparison at the time of review. “Not stated” means that comparison did not establish the detail; it is not a claim that the product lacks the feature.

Which burner fits your situation?
Backup burner for a kitchen
A single 1,000–1,300 W coil or cast-iron model can add one cooking zone without requiring induction-compatible pans. Choose a stable location with the clearance specified by the model manual, and remember that the published wattage is a rating, not a measured cooking speed.

Rank #3
- Easy to Clean: 6.5-inch and 5-inch Cast Iron flat cooking plates are nonstick and easy to clean with a damp cloth or non abrasive sponge
- Adjustable Temperature: Quickly reach and sustain the desired LOW, MEDIUM or HIGH heat settings with the variable temperature knob to keep food warm or boil hot water.
- Built in Safety: Dual power indicator lights on the front of the burner remind users when the item is powered ON; non skid feet ensure the burner remains stable during use.
- Compact and portable: the compact size of the burner makes it an easily accessible item to take on the go wherever an extra cooking device is needed, at school, office, camping trips or home.
- Efficient Power - With a combined wattage of 1500W, dual hot plates and individual temperature controls, delicious meals can be cooked simultaneously.
Dorm room or small apartment
Prioritize the unit’s actual dimensions, control layout, ventilation clearance and electrical requirements before ordering; those details are not established for the six examples in the comparison table. Induction can be attractive for speed and precise adjustment, but first check every pan you plan to use.
RV or temporary cooking setup
Confirm that the vehicle’s inverter, shore-power connection or campsite circuit can support the burner’s rated wattage. A double burner adds capacity but uses more counter space and may share its total rating across both zones; the EDB-302BF’s 1,500 W allocation is not stated in the comparison.

- Easy to Clean: 6.5-inch and 5-inch Cast Iron flat cooking plates are nonstick and easy to clean with a damp cloth or non abrasive sponge

- Efficient Power - With a combined wattage of 1500W, dual hot plates and individual temperature controls, delicious meals can be cooked simultaneously.
Adding a second zone during meal preparation
A double model is the capacity choice when two pans must run at once. Compare total wattage, how power is allocated, footprint and whether both controls can be adjusted independently. Do not assume two zones each receive the full advertised total.
Features to verify on the live listing and manual
- Dimensions and stability: Measure the available counter or table and look for nonslip feet or other stability provisions in the manual.
- Controls: Confirm dial versus electronic controls, temperature steps, timer behavior and whether settings reset after a power interruption.
- Indicators and protections: Check for power or residual-heat lights, over-temperature protection, automatic shutoff and cookware detection where applicable.
- Electrical requirements: Match the nameplate voltage, plug and rated wattage to the circuit you will use; avoid assuming an RV inverter or extension cord is suitable.
- Cookware: For induction, perform the magnet test and read the manual’s minimum pan-size and material rules. For coil or solid plate, verify maximum pan size and any flat-base requirement.
Safe setup, use and cleaning
Follow the chosen model’s own instructions. For example, the NutriChef NCIT2S manual says to place the unit on a level, dry surface, keep clearance around it, leave the vent unobstructed and avoid immersing the appliance or cord. These are model-specific instructions, not a substitute for the manual supplied with another burner. The manual is available at NutriChef’s NCIT2S PDF.

- EASY TO CLEAN – The premium stainless steel base allows you to clean food drippings and splatters easily with a non-abrasive sponge or soft damp cloth. Also the non-slip rubber feet ensure the product remains stable and prevents from sliding.
Allow the appliance to cool before cleaning. ENERGY STAR advises cleaning cooktops after cooling and warns that glass or ceramic surfaces can scratch or crack when scrubbed abrasively or struck by heavy cookware. Never cover vents or submerge the electrical unit.
What the available testing evidence does—and does not—show
Consumer Reports’ page, updated January 18, 2026, reports roughly 13 minutes for the fastest and 20 minutes for the slowest of its tested portable induction cooktops to boil four liters, but only a search-result excerpt was accessible for this assignment. Without the full test conditions, those figures should not be treated as a ranking of the six models above.
Kitchen Guide 101’s comparison is a commercial secondary source that lists models and claims testing, but its protocol was not independently assessed here. Manufacturer listings and manuals remain the right place to confirm current specifications.
