To start a snow blower safely, follow the cold- or warm-start procedure in the operator’s manual for your exact make and model. Control layouts, primer presses, choke settings, electric-start cords and starter limits vary, so there is no universal sequence. The steps below explain what to check and how to use the common start methods without treating one model’s settings as rules for every machine.
Before you start: identify your model and check the machine
Find the make, model and serial information on the machine, then consult its operator’s manual. Use the manual’s labels and instructions rather than assuming that a control works the same way across brands or models.
Before starting, follow the manual’s safety and inspection directions. For example, Ariens’ Operator’s Manual 30129700 directs owners to read the safety section, check the oil and control function, and know how to stop the machine in an emergency. Its instruction is direct: “Read and understand the Safety section before proceeding.” Use the emergency-stop method specified for your own snow blower.
- Check oil and other pre-start items specified in your manual.
- Confirm controls operate as described and that the machine is in the manual’s required starting condition.
- If you need to add fuel, do so outdoors with the engine cold. Toro’s manual says, “Fill the tank outdoors when the engine is cold.”
Set the cold- or warm-start controls
A cold engine may require the choke and primer settings specified by its manual. A warm engine generally needs less choking. Do not copy a primer count from another machine: the correct number, or whether priming is needed at all, depends on the model and conditions.
#1 Best Overall
- Peak Power technology combines the power of 2 EGO 56V ARC Lithium batteries
- Throws snow up to 40 ft.
- Steel auger cuts through ice & snow 50% faster
- High-efficiency brushless motor
- 21 in. clearing width
As one model-specific example, an Ariens single-stage manual directs users to prime a cold engine, set the choke and use the ignition key; after the engine starts, it says to open the choke gradually. That is not a universal count or sequence. Follow your own manual’s directions for the key, fuel valve, primer and choke.
Start the engine using the method your machine has
Snow blowers may use recoil starting, electric starting or both. Use the applicable branch below and follow the manual’s exact control positions and limits.
Rank #2
- Cordless 48-Volt Power: Dual 24-volt IONMAX lithium batteries deliver 48-volt output for consistent cordless snow removal without gas, extension cords, pull starts, or routine engine maintenance
- 18-Inch Clearing Width: Clears an 18-inch-wide by 10-inch-deep path to remove light to moderate snow from driveway, sidewalk, patio, deck, walkway, pathway, porch, pavement, and concrete
- 1200-Watt Brushless Motor: High-efficiency brushless motor moves up to 700 pounds of snow per minute, handling fresh snowfall and light accumulation with reduced vibration and wear
- 20-Foot Throw Distance: Adjustable 180-degree chute rotates for directional control and throws snow up to 20 feet, allowing targeted discharge placement away from cleared areas and edges
- LED Light and Steel Auger: 2-watt LED headlight supports early morning and evening clearing while rubber-tipped steel auger and scraper bar clear close to pavement without surface damage
Recoil start
- Set the fuel valve, ignition key, choke and primer as directed for your engine’s temperature.
- Use the recoil handle as described in the manual. Keep a firm grip and use the manual’s starting posture and technique.
- When the engine catches, stop pulling and move to the warm-up procedure below.
Electric start
- Check the manual for the required cord, receptacle and grounding instructions before connecting anything. Do not assume that a cord suitable for one machine is suitable for another.
- Set the fuel valve, key, choke and primer as prescribed, then operate the starter using the manual’s sequence.
- Observe the model’s cranking duration and cooling intervals. Do not keep the starter engaged beyond its stated limit.
These limits can differ even between manufacturer manuals. Ariens manual 30129700, for applicable electric-start models, calls for a UL-listed or CSA-certified grounded outdoor extension cord rated at least 13 amps and warns against running that model’s starter for more than ten cycles of five seconds on and five seconds off. An older Ariens single-stage manual instead limits electric cranking to 20 seconds and calls for ten minutes between attempts. Neither set of figures should be applied to other models; use the limits in your machine’s manual.

Let the engine warm, then ease the choke toward the run position as the manual directs. Adjust it gradually rather than moving it straight to run if the instructions call for a staged change. Toro and Ariens manuals describe model-specific warm-up and choke adjustment procedures; the correct timing and control positions depend on the machine.

If the snow blower does not start
Do not keep repeating a generic sequence or exceed the starter’s limits. Recheck the fuel valve, ignition key, choke and primer against the manual’s starting instructions, then use its troubleshooting section. If the machine still will not start, follow the manual’s next steps or seek qualified service rather than guessing at a repair.
