Use a Thermacell E90 to protect a patio or deck, Summit Mosquito Dunks for standing water, and 20% picaridin when you leave the seating area. Reserve a product such as Cutter Backyard Bug Control for a genuine adult-mosquito problem that can be treated exactly according to its label.
No single product reliably creates a mosquito-free shield over an entire open yard. Spatial repellents protect a defined sitting area, adulticides treat mosquitoes resting on vegetation and structures, larvicides stop mosquitoes developing in water, traps capture some adults, and topical repellents protect the person wearing them. The right choice depends on where mosquitoes are biting and whether you are sitting still or moving around the property.

Quick comparison: the five best choices
This is an editorial ranking of different mosquito-control jobs—not a laboratory ranking of every product sold in the United States. Prices and formulations can change, so verify the current package and EPA-approved label before buying or applying anything. Product information and prices below were checked against information available on August 10, 2026.
| Rank | Product | Type | Best for | Rated coverage or duration | Active ingredient or mechanism | Main drawback | Observed price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Thermacell E90 E-ZoneGuard Patio 9Hr Rechargeable Repeller | Spatial repellent | Patios, decks, porches, tables, and small fire-pit areas | Manufacturer-rated 20-foot zone; up to 9 hours of battery runtime; about 15 minutes to develop maximum protection | 5.5% metofluthrin | Wind can reduce or shift the protected zone; requires refills | $54.99 observed; volatile |
| 2 | Thermacell LIV On-Demand System | Installed, multi-unit spatial repellent | Larger patios and permanent outdoor living areas | Each unit is rated for a 20-foot zone; Thermacell estimates 945 square feet with three units and 1,575 square feet with five | Compatible Thermacell repellent cartridges | Requires a 120-volt GFCI outlet, planning, and multiple units; not a whole-property barrier | Varies by kit; check current price |
| 3 | Cutter Backyard Bug Control Spray Concentrate | Outdoor adulticide | Shaded lawn edges, shrubs, landscaping, and mosquito resting sites | Product marketing lists up to 5,000 square feet, while product-page directions also state one quart treats 2,500 square feet of lawn; follow the physical label | 0.16% lambda-cyhalothrin | It is an insecticide with runoff, pollinator, aquatic-life, re-entry, and weather limitations | Varies by retailer and formulation |
| 4 | Summit Mosquito Dunks | Larvicide | Birdbaths, rain barrels, ponds, gutters, tree holes, and other unavoidable standing water | One dunk treats up to 100 square feet of water surface; effective for at least 30 days or more | Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies israelensis (Bti) | Does not repel or kill adult mosquitoes already flying | Varies by package size |
| 5 | Sawyer 20% Picaridin Insect Repellent | Topical personal repellent | Gardening, mowing, walking, and yard work | Spray marketed for up to 12 hours against mosquitoes and ticks; lotion version up to 14 hours against mosquitoes and ticks | 20% picaridin | Protects the wearer, not the yard; duration depends on the label and conditions | $12.49 observed for 6-ounce continuous spray; volatile |
Coverage numbers in the table are not interchangeable. A “20-foot zone” is a manufacturer-rated spatial-repellent zone, not a guaranteed 20-foot-radius reduction in bites in every wind condition. A 5,000-square-foot spray claim is a treatment-area claim, not proof of uniform mosquito protection. A 100-square-foot dunk rating refers to the water surface, not the surrounding yard.

How to choose the right mosquito product
Start with the problem rather than the product category:
- People are sitting in one place: choose a spatial repeller such as the E90.
- The outdoor living area is large and used frequently: consider the installed LIV system.
- Mosquitoes are resting in dense vegetation and shaded areas: a properly labeled adulticide may reduce the adult population in those treatment areas.
- Larvae are developing in water: remove the water first; use Bti only where water must remain.
- You are walking, gardening, mowing, or playing: use a topical EPA-registered repellent such as picaridin, along with appropriate clothing.
The most reliable plan combines source reduction with targeted protection. The CDC recommends integrated mosquito control at home, including removing breeding sites, using larvicides in unavoidable water, controlling adult mosquitoes where appropriate, and protecting people with repellents, clothing, screens, and netting.
1. Thermacell E90 E-ZoneGuard Patio 9Hr Rechargeable Repeller
Best for: A patio table, deck, porch, balcony, or small fire-pit seating area.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What it is
The E90 is a rechargeable spatial repeller. It warms a cartridge containing 5.5% metofluthrin and releases the repellent into the air around the device. Unlike a topical repellent, it is not applied to skin. Unlike a yard spray, it is not intended to coat grass, shrubs, furniture, or soil.
Thermacell lists a manufacturer-rated 20-foot zone, up to nine hours of battery runtime, and approximately 15 minutes for maximum protection to develop. The current product page lists a micro-USB rechargeable battery and an included refill rated for 12 hours. The observed official price was $54.99, but current pricing, refill availability, and included accessories can change. See the current E90 specifications before purchase.
Why it is the best default patio pick
Most homeowners do not need to protect every square foot of their property. They need fewer bites around the table, porch, or fire pit. The E90 addresses that stationary use case without asking the homeowner to spray a broad area.
There is also peer-reviewed field evidence for metofluthrin spatial emanators, although it was not a direct test of the E90. In one outdoor study, an emanator produced an 89.5% reduction in mosquito landings when the device was close to the volunteer. Protection was less uniform farther away, and results can vary with mosquito species, wind, enclosure, placement, and device design. That study should support confidence in the category—not be presented as a guarantee for this exact model.
How to set it up
- Insert the compatible repellent cartridge.
- Place the unit near the center of the actual seating area, preferably where strong crosswinds will not immediately disperse the repellent plume.
- Turn it on about 15 minutes before people sit down.
- Use additional units for separate seating areas or a larger layout; do not assume one device protects an entire lawn.
- Turn it off when no longer needed and store it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Thermacell’s wind guidance is important: wind can shrink, shift, or break up the effective zone. A fan, screen, gazebo, or sheltered porch can be a useful backup when the device is exposed.
What it does not do
- It does not protect someone walking across the yard.
- It does not kill mosquito larvae or reduce breeding sites.
- It does not guarantee protection from mosquito-borne disease.
- It does not create a dependable whole-yard barrier in an open, windy landscape.
Safety and maintenance: Use the device and cartridge only as directed on the current label. It avoids skin application, smoke, and an open flame, but “no pesticide is completely risk-free.” Keep the unit away from children’s access, water exposure, and unsafe electrical conditions, and budget for recurring refills.
Best alternative: For a permanent, larger seating area, use the Thermacell LIV system. For a small screened porch, physical screening and airflow may be more reliable and avoid the need for an airborne repellent.
2. Thermacell LIV On-Demand System
Best for: A larger patio, deck, outdoor dining space, or fire-pit area that is used often enough to justify installed equipment.
What it is
LIV uses multiple installed repellers to create overlapping spatial-repellent zones. Thermacell rates each repeller for a 20-foot zone, described as a 10-foot radius and approximately 315 square feet. Its planning figures are approximately 945 square feet with three repellers, 1,260 square feet with four, and 1,575 square feet with five.
Those figures describe a planned set of overlapping zones—not a sealed shield around the property. Exposed, windy yards and areas with dense vegetation may perform differently from a sheltered patio.
Installation and placement
According to Thermacell’s LIV support and installation guidance:
Rank #2
- Two 4 oz cans of OFF Deep Woods Insect Repellent Aerosol protect against mosquitoes
- Outdoor bug repellent is formulated with 25% DEET and provides long lasting protection from mosquitoes, making this DEET mosquito repellent an ideal bug spray for camping, hiking, running and your favorite outdoor activities
- OFF mosquito spray offers effective protection from mosquitoes that may carry the Zika, Dengue, or West Nile viruses plus ticks that may cause Lyme disease, biting flies, gnats, and chiggers
- OFF bug spray with DEET comes in a convenient aerosol spray bottle for easy application
- Mosquito repellent spray goes on powder-dry, not oily or greasy, so you don't know you're wearing it and it doesn't stain
- The system requires a 120-volt GFCI outlet.
- Place repellers within approximately 10 feet of the protected area.
- Keep units no more than approximately 20 feet apart.
- Install them at least 12 inches from plants, shrubs, or structures for better performance.
- Thermacell recommends placement near ground level.
Map where people actually sit, eat, and gather. Place units around the perimeter of that activity zone rather than clustering them together. Avoid burying them in dense plants or putting them directly beside a wall, and keep power connections away from water collection and other electrical hazards. Follow the current installation instructions and local electrical requirements because kit contents and product availability can change.
Why choose LIV over an E90
LIV makes sense when a homeowner wants several coordinated zones without manually moving a portable device for every gathering. It is better suited to a semi-permanent outdoor living space than to a lawn, property boundary, or dispersed garden.
Trade-offs: It costs more and requires more planning than an E90. It needs power, suitable placement, replacement cartridges, and a layout that is not constantly exposed to strong wind. It also remains only one part of mosquito control: standing water, personal protection, and occasional targeted adult control may still be necessary.
Best alternative: Use one or more E90 units for occasional gatherings, or install screens, netting, and fans if you prefer a physical barrier.
3. Cutter Backyard Bug Control Spray Concentrate
Best for: Homeowners who need to reduce adult mosquitoes resting in shaded, humid areas such as shrubs, lawn edges, areas beneath decks, and around outdoor structures.

What it is
Cutter Backyard Bug Control Spray Concentrate is an outdoor adulticide—not a harmless scent barrier. The current Cutter product information identifies the active ingredient as 0.16% lambda-cyhalothrin. Some older comparison pages call this product bifenthrin-based, but that does not match the current product-page information. Always check the physical bottle and EPA registration for the formulation you actually purchased.
The product uses a QuickFlip hose-end sprayer and is sold in a 32-ounce size. Cutter’s current product information advertises coverage of up to 5,000 square feet, but the same product-page material also contains a direction stating that one quart treats 2,500 square feet of lawn. Because those figures conflict, do not silently rely on the larger number. Follow the physical label on your bottle and verify the exact regional formulation before applying it.
Where it can help
Adult mosquitoes often rest in cool, dark, humid locations. The CDC identifies areas such as the undersides of decks, outdoor furniture, playground equipment, sheds, and thick vegetation as important resting sites. A correctly applied adulticide may reduce mosquitoes in those areas and can be useful before an outdoor event.
It is not the same as spraying an invisible, permanent “barrier” around the entire yard. Rain, irrigation, sunlight, mowing, vegetation growth, wind, and poor coverage can shorten residual performance. Cutter’s “up to 12 weeks” marketing language applies to certain listed insects and should not automatically be described as 12 weeks of mosquito control.

Application and re-entry
- Remove people, pets, toys, food, and objects that should not be sprayed from the treatment area.
- Read the current physical label, including the exact application rate and approved sites.
- Do not apply during rain, and do not apply in a way that creates runoff.
- Keep the product out of drains, gutters, storm drains, ponds, streams, and aquatic habitat.
- Keep children and pets out of treated areas until the product has dried and for any longer period required by the label.
- Store the container and equipment as directed; never transfer pesticide to an unmarked container.
Environmental limitations
Lambda-cyhalothrin is a pyrethroid. Pyrethroids can harm bees and are toxic to fish and other aquatic organisms. The EPA advises avoiding drift and runoff and protecting water bodies. Do not spray blooming plants visited by pollinators. Do not spray a food-producing garden unless the exact label expressly permits that use.
There is no blanket answer that Cutter is “safe around pets.” The accurate answer is: keep pets away from the wet treatment and follow the current label, including any restrictions involving aquatic pets, food, toys, and re-entry. No pesticide should be treated as risk-free.
Best alternative: If the main problem is a birdbath, rain barrel, or other standing-water source, use source reduction and Bti rather than spraying the surrounding yard. If the main problem is people being bitten while moving, use picaridin.
4. Summit Mosquito Dunks

Summit Mosquito Dunks contain Bti—Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies israelensis. Bti targets mosquito larvae in water. It does not repel adult mosquitoes and does not kill adult mosquitoes already flying around the yard.
Rank #3
- Non-greasy, lightweight bug repellent spray dries quickly, not sticky
- Long-lasting protection from this OFF! mosquito repellent spray lasts up to 8 hours to keep you protected from mosquito bites day or night
- Odorless formula that helps you avoid mosquito bites during mosquito season
- OFF insect repellent spray is proven to repel mosquitoes, and ticks
- Easy-to-apply aerosol bug spray makes it simple to spray, spread and go
One dunk treats up to 100 square feet of water surface regardless of depth. Dunks remain effective for at least 30 days or more, and smaller containers can receive a broken piece. Summit lists uses including rain barrels, birdbaths, animal watering troughs, ponds, water gardens, tree holes, gutters, and other standing water. See the current product directions for approved uses and replacement instructions.
How to use them correctly
- First empty, scrub, cover, drain, or otherwise eliminate the water if possible.
- Use a dunk only where the water must remain.
- Use one whole dunk for up to 100 square feet of water surface.
- Break a dunk into a proportional piece for a smaller container.
- Replace it at least monthly or when it has dissolved, according to the label.
- Do not treat drinking water unless the specific product label permits that use.
Do not expect an immediate adult-mosquito reduction. Existing adults can continue biting, and newly emerging adults may still be present while the larval population declines. Scrub containers periodically because mosquito eggs can adhere to container walls.
The EPA describes Bti as a bacterium that specifically targets mosquito, blackfly, and fungus-gnat larvae and reports no toxicity to people and minimal toxicity to honey bees when used appropriately. That does not eliminate the need to follow the individual product label.

5. Sawyer 20% Picaridin Insect Repellent
Best for: Gardening, mowing, walking the dog, yard work, sports, and any activity outside a protected seating zone.
Why personal protection matters
A spatial repeller protects an area. Picaridin protects the person wearing it. That distinction is why a topical repellent is essential for anyone moving through shrubs, tall grass, shaded areas, or the far side of the property.
Sawyer’s continuous spray contains 20% picaridin and is marketed to protect against mosquitoes and ticks for up to 12 hours. Sawyer lists protection against biting flies, gnats, chiggers, and sand flies for up to eight hours. Its lotion version is listed for up to 14 hours against mosquitoes and ticks. The current observed price for the six-ounce continuous spray was $12.49. These are manufacturer specifications and prices can change; use the label’s directions for reapplication.
Correct use
- Apply only to exposed skin and clothing areas allowed by the label.
- Do not apply beneath clothing.
- Do not spray directly onto the face; apply according to the product directions.
- If using sunscreen, apply sunscreen first and repellent second.
- Reapply according to the label rather than assuming the maximum advertised duration applies in every situation.
- Wash treated skin after returning indoors when the label recommends it, and store the product out of children’s reach.
The CDC recommends EPA-registered repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus/PMD, or 2-undecanone when used according to their labels. Picaridin is a practical alternative to DEET; both can provide effective protection, but performance depends on concentration, application, sweating, water exposure, mosquito pressure, and reapplication.
Best alternative: EPA-registered DEET or another CDC-listed active ingredient. Loose, long clothing and properly treated clothing or gear can add protection. Never apply permethrin clothing products directly to skin.
The setup that works better than any single product
1. Eliminate breeding water every week
Walk the entire property—not just the patio—at least weekly. Empty and scrub buckets, toys, flowerpot saucers, unused equipment, and other containers. Clean gutters and downspouts. Turn over objects that collect rain. Remove water from tarps and pool covers, and drain unused pools and kiddie pools.
Cover rain barrels and cisterns with tight lids or mosquito-proof mesh. Inspect low spots, clogged drains, irrigation leaks, and construction materials that can hold water. For water-holding tree holes, the CDC recommends suitable expanding foam; do not fill tree holes with concrete, gravel, or sand, and do not drill into the tree.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2. Treat only unavoidable water
Use Summit Dunks or another correctly labeled larvicide when water cannot be removed or covered. Different Bti products—dunks, bits, granules, and professional formulations—have different labels, so do not transfer the directions from one product to another.
3. Protect the place where people sit
Use an E90 for a small or temporary seating area. Use a planned LIV layout for a larger permanent outdoor living area. Turn a spatial repeller on about 15 minutes ahead of time, and shelter it from strong crosswinds where possible.
4. Protect people who move
Keep picaridin available for anyone leaving the protected zone. Add loose, long clothing, screens, netting, and airflow. Screens and netting are especially useful for porches, gazebos, outdoor dining areas, baby strollers, and playpens; the CDC includes physical barriers among its bite-prevention measures.
Rank #4
- One 4 oz bottle of OFF! Botanicals Insect Repellent protects against black flies, gnats, and no-see-ums. Repels mosquitoes that may carry the West Nile virus
- Outdoor mosquito spray is formulated with a botanically inspired active ingredient and contains no added dyes, making it ideal for camping, hiking, running and your favorite outdoor activities
- OFF! bug spray offers effective protection from mosquitoes
- OFF! mosquito repellent comes in a convenient bottle with a spray pump for easy application before enjoying the outdoors
- Convenient bottle is perfect to pack in a backpack for bug repellent on the go
5. Use adulticide only when the problem justifies it
If adult mosquitoes are abundant in shaded resting sites before an event, a correctly labeled outdoor spray may help. Treat targeted resting sites rather than automatically spraying every plant and open lawn. Keep people and pets away until the label allows re-entry, and avoid blooming plants, drains, food gardens, and all aquatic environments.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Even excellent local control may not eliminate biting. Mosquitoes can arrive from neighboring properties and larger habitats. UC IPM notes that some adult mosquitoes can travel several miles, so a cleaned-up property can still experience pressure from outside its boundaries.
Which combination fits your situation?
Small patio or deck
- Remove standing water.
- Place one E90 near the center of the seating area.
- Start it 15 minutes before people arrive.
- Keep picaridin available for anyone walking away from the patio.
- Add a fan or screen if wind makes the spatial zone unreliable.
Large outdoor living area
- Inspect and eliminate breeding sites.
- Plan LIV units around the perimeter of the actual activity zone.
- Treat unavoidable water with Bti.
- Use picaridin outside the installed zones.
- Avoid routine whole-yard spraying unless there is a genuine adult-mosquito problem and the label can be followed precisely.
Severe adult-mosquito problem before an event
- Remove obvious water sources first.
- Treat appropriate shaded resting sites with a correctly labeled adulticide.
- Keep people, pets, toys, food, and water sources away until the label’s re-entry requirements are met.
- Use a spatial repeller around the gathering area.
- Use topical repellent for anyone moving through untreated areas.
Birdbath, rain barrel, pond, or low spot that cannot be drained
- Remove all removable water elsewhere on the property.
- Use Summit Mosquito Dunks according to their label.
- Replace them monthly or when dissolved, as directed.
- Scrub the container periodically to remove eggs attached to its sides.
Gardening or mowing
- Wear loose, long clothing.
- Apply picaridin to exposed skin according to its label.
- Consider EPA-registered permethrin-treated clothing or gear; never apply permethrin clothing products directly to skin.
- Do not assume a patio repeller follows and protects you around the yard.
Honorable mentions and alternatives
DynaTrap 1/2 Acre LED Mosquito & Insect Trap
Best for: Someone who wants a pesticide-free mechanical trap and accepts uncertain results.
The DynaTrap DT1130SR uses a UV LED and fan to draw insects into a catch basket. The manufacturer lists coverage up to one-half acre, a current observed price of $79.99, and placement 3–6 feet above ground and 20–40 feet from the area where people spend time. It requires a standard 120-volt outlet. See the current manufacturer specifications.
This is a trap, not a repellent. Its acreage figure is a manufacturer coverage claim, not proof that people will receive fewer bites. University and extension guidance indicates that homeowner mosquito traps may capture only a small proportion of the local population and may not reduce biting over a broad area. Place the trap away from people because it is designed to attract insects toward itself.
Do not confuse a fan-and-catch trap with an ordinary UV bug zapper. Virginia Tech Extension reports that UV zappers kill very few mosquitoes while killing many non-target insects, and ultrasonic devices have not worked as advertised in scientific trials.
Wondercide Outdoor Pest Control
Best for: Readers specifically seeking a plant-oil-based alternative to conventional pyrethroid yard sprays.
The manufacturer lists cedarwood oil, sesame oil, and sodium lauryl sulfate as active ingredients and claims that the product kills and repels mosquitoes over up to 5,000 square feet. Its directions call for applications every few days until control is established, then every 30–45 days or as needed. These are manufacturer claims; “plant-powered” does not automatically mean harmless, more effective, or safe around pollinators and aquatic life. See the current product label and directions.
It still does not replace standing-water control, and the frequent initial applications may make it less convenient or economical than the marketing suggests. Do not apply it to food-use sites unless the exact label permits that use.
Physical barriers and fans
Screens, mosquito netting, screen tents, gazebos, and fans can be excellent choices for homeowners who want to avoid insecticides or airborne repellents. They are especially useful for babies, outdoor dining, small porches, and people who cannot or do not want to use topical repellents.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What not to buy—or what not to overtrust
- UV-only bug zappers: They are not reliable mosquito-control devices and can kill non-target insects.
- Ultrasonic repellents: Scientific trials have not supported the advertised mosquito-repellent effect.
- Mosquito-repelling plants as a standalone solution: Plants may be attractive landscaping, but planting them does not remove breeding water or reliably protect an open yard.
- Citronella candles as whole-yard protection: Even if a candle provides a small localized effect under favorable conditions, it cannot substitute for source control, personal repellent, or a properly placed spatial device.
- Automatic misting systems installed without a plan: EPA and CDC warn that residential misting systems can expose people and pets, coat outdoor objects, harm beneficial insects, and contaminate aquatic environments if poorly designed or maintained. The American Mosquito Control Association also objects to routine timed-release spraying without mosquito surveillance.
- Unlabeled homemade pesticide mixtures: Do not mix or apply chemicals in ways the label does not permit, and do not use an outdoor product indoors.
- “Natural,” “non-toxic,” or “pet-safe” marketing without label review: Natural does not establish effectiveness or ecological safety, and no pesticide is entirely risk-free.
Safety checklist
- Read the current physical label before using any pesticide, larvicide, spatial-repellent cartridge, or topical repellent.
- Use only the amount, location, equipment, and frequency the label allows.
- Keep children and pets away from wet treated areas until the label permits re-entry.
- Never spray ponds, streams, storm drains, gutters, fish habitats, or areas where runoff can reach water.
- Do not spray blooming plants that pollinators are visiting.
- Do not spray food-producing gardens unless the exact product label permits it.
- Do not use outdoor products indoors.
- Keep topical repellents out of children’s reach and apply them only as directed.
- Apply sunscreen first and repellent second.
- Never apply permethrin clothing products directly to skin.
- Keep spatial-repeller electrical connections dry and use the correct outdoor electrical protection.
- After a spill, ingestion, inhalation, eye exposure, or unusual reaction, contact Poison Control or a medical professional and have the product label available.
For people at elevated risk from mosquito-borne illness, use multiple layers of protection: EPA-registered skin repellent, long clothing, screens or netting, and source control. No specific product in this list should be described as preventing West Nile, Zika, dengue, or another disease on its own.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best mosquito repellent for a patio?
For most patios, the Thermacell E90 is the best default choice because it creates a defined spatial-repellent zone around the seating area without coating the patio or applying product to skin. Place it near the seating area, start it about 15 minutes before use, and protect people with picaridin when they leave the zone. Wind can reduce its performance.
Do Thermacell devices work in wind?
They can work in light or moderate conditions, but wind disperses the repellent plume and can shrink or shift the effective zone. The advertised 20-foot zone is not guaranteed in every location. Place the device near the center of the seating area and shelter it from strong crosswinds where possible. Thermacell provides additional wind-placement guidance.
Recommended Free Tools
Can one Thermacell protect an entire yard?
No. Thermacell devices are spatial repellents for defined areas, not whole-property shields. One E90 is intended for a seating zone, while LIV uses multiple overlapping zones for a larger patio or outdoor living area. A person walking across an open lawn still needs personal protection.
Do mosquito dunks kill adult mosquitoes?
No. Summit Mosquito Dunks use Bti to target mosquito larvae in standing water. They do not repel or kill adult mosquitoes already flying. They reduce future emergence from the treated water source, so adult mosquitoes may remain for some time after treatment.
Best Value
- KILLS FAST: Kills mosquitoes, listed ant types, fleas and other listed insects.
- QUICKFLIP HOSE-END SPRAYER: Hose-end-sprayer activates spray at the flip of a switch – just grip, flip and go.
- LASTS ALL SUMMER: Controls up to 12 weeks against house crickets, carpenter ants, harvester ants, lady beetles and earwigs.
- COVERAGE: 1 bottle treats up to 5,000 square feet of lawn.
- NO MIXING REQUIRED: Attach the sprayer to a garden hose to treat your lawn, landscape and outdoor surfaces where insects hide.
How often should mosquito dunks be replaced?
Summit says its dunks remain effective for at least 30 days or more. Replace a dunk at least monthly or when it has dissolved, following the current product label. Inspect containers after heavy rain and replace or reposition a dunk if water has overflowed or the product has been washed away.
Is Cutter Backyard Bug Control safe around pets?
Do not describe it as universally pet-safe. It is an insecticide containing lambda-cyhalothrin, and the label says to keep children and pets out of treated areas until dry, along with following any additional restrictions. Keep pets away from wet spray, containers, runoff, and treated water features, and follow the exact current bottle label.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How long should people stay off a sprayed lawn?
For Cutter Backyard, the product information says to keep children and pets out of the treated area until it is dry. The current physical label controls, so follow any longer or more specific re-entry instruction on your bottle. Keep people, pets, toys, food, and outdoor objects away during application and drying.
Are yard sprays safe around bees and fish?
Pyrethroid yard sprays can harm bees and are toxic to fish and other aquatic organisms. Do not spray blooming plants visited by pollinators, ponds, streams, drains, gutters, fish habitats, or areas where runoff can reach water. Use only the labeled rate and application method.
Do bug zappers work on mosquitoes?
Ordinary UV bug zappers are poor mosquito-control choices. Virginia Tech Extension reports that they kill very few mosquitoes while killing many non-target insects. A fan-and-catch device such as DynaTrap is a different mechanism, but its manufacturer-rated acreage is not proof that it will reduce bites across a property.
Does picaridin work as well as DEET?
Picaridin and DEET are both CDC-listed, EPA-registered repellent active ingredients that can provide effective protection when used according to their labels. Results depend on concentration, application, sweating, water exposure, mosquito pressure, and reapplication. Sawyer’s 20% picaridin spray is marketed for up to 12 hours against mosquitoes and ticks, but use the label rather than assuming the maximum duration always applies.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat should I use if I am pregnant?
The CDC recommends EPA-registered repellents, including picaridin and DEET, when used according to the label, along with long clothing, screens, and source control. If you have a pregnancy-specific medical concern, ask your healthcare professional. Do not substitute an unregistered “natural” product merely because it sounds safer; CDC says the effectiveness of some non-EPA-registered repellents is unknown.
What is best for babies and young children?
Use screens, mosquito netting, covered clothing, and physical barriers as the first line of protection. Follow the age restrictions and application directions on any topical-repellent label; do not use skin-applied repellent on babies under two months unless a healthcare professional directs otherwise. A caregiver should apply repellent as directed, avoiding a child’s hands, eyes, and mouth. Ask a pediatrician when uncertain.
How do I protect myself while mowing?
Wear loose, long clothing and apply an EPA-registered topical repellent such as 20% picaridin to exposed skin according to the label. Consider properly treated permethrin clothing or gear, but never apply permethrin clothing products directly to skin. Do not assume a patio spatial repeller protects you across the lawn.
Can mosquitoes come from a neighbor’s yard?
Yes. Local cleanup is essential, but it may not eliminate biting if mosquitoes arrive from neighboring properties or larger habitats. UC IPM notes that some adult mosquitoes can travel several miles. A patio repeller, personal repellent, screens, and coordinated neighborhood source control may be needed.

Should I hire a mosquito-control company?
Consider a licensed professional when mosquito pressure remains high after water removal, when the property includes difficult wetlands or drainage features, or when disease risk and large outdoor areas make DIY control impractical. Ask whether the company uses inspection, surveillance, targeted applications, and label-compliant methods rather than promising a permanently mosquito-free yard.
Are automatic misting systems worth it?
Usually not as a first choice for a homeowner. EPA and CDC warn that residential misting systems can expose people and pets, harm beneficial insects, and contaminate aquatic environments if poorly designed or maintained. Source control, targeted spatial protection, physical barriers, personal repellent, and carefully limited labeled applications are generally easier to control.
The Bottom Line
For a patio, buy the Thermacell E90. For a larger permanent outdoor living area, plan a Thermacell LIV system. For standing water, use Summit Mosquito Dunks only after removing what you can. For mowing, gardening, and walking, use 20% picaridin. Use Cutter Backyard Bug Control only for a genuine adult-mosquito problem and only according to the current physical label.
The most effective yard strategy is layered: eliminate water weekly, treat unavoidable water, protect the place where people sit, and protect people who move. That approach is more realistic—and safer—than expecting one product to make an open property mosquito-free.
