Best overall: OXO Brew 9-Cup Coffee Maker. It combines a dependable wake-up timer, thermal carafe, useful 2–9-cup range, and documented temperature control. Serious Eats selected it after testing 13 programmable coffee makers. This guide also includes independent findings from Consumer Reports, TechGearLab, and Good Housekeeping, while clearly labeling recommendations based only on manufacturer specifications. It does not claim first-party testing by the publisher.

1. OXO Brew 9-Cup Coffee Maker: best overall

The OXO Brew 9-Cup Coffee Maker is the strongest all-around choice for a household that wants coffee ready at a set time without managing a complicated control panel. Serious Eats selected it as the best programmable coffee maker after testing 13 models, citing its programming, heating performance, and thermal carafe.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

OXO documents a programmable automatic wake-up timer, a 2–9-cup range, a freshness timer, pause-and-pour functionality, and a Rainmaker showerhead intended to distribute water evenly over the grounds. Its listed brewing-temperature range is 197.6°F to 204.8°F, and the U.S. model is rated for 120V/60Hz with a 9-cup capacity. OXO also identifies the brewer as SCA-recognized.

The thermal carafe is the main practical advantage over an inexpensive glass-carafe machine: it is better suited to people who pour several cups over a morning rather than drinking the entire pot immediately. The trade-off is that the brewer uses cone-shaped paper filters, so buyers should make sure they have the correct filter size before the first brew. OXO recommends filtered water and medium-ground coffee; its manual gives an approximate ratio of 8 grams of coffee per 5-ounce cup based on the SCA Golden Cup Standard.

#1 Best Overall
BLACK+DECKER 12-Cup Drip Coffee Maker with Vortex Brewing | 12-cup drip coffee maker with Vortex brewing for rich coffee extraction, programmable timer, Sneak-A-Cup and auto shutoff
  • 12-CUP DURALIFE GLASS CARAFE: The sturdy 12-cup* carafe has measurement markings for accurate filling and an easy-grip handle for comfortable pouring. *Cup equals approximately 5 ounces (varies by brewing technique).
  • SNEAK-A-CUP FEATURE TO PREVENT DRIPS: This feature temporarily stops the flow of coffee so you can pour your first cup before brewing ends without making a mess.
  • EASY-VIEW WATER WINDOW: The front-facing window shows you the exact amount of water that will turn into coffee, and the brew basket requires a standard paper coffee filter for proper operation.
  • DIGITAL CONTROLS WITH RUBBERIZED FEEL: Large, rubberized buttons give you full control of the coffeemaker, and the easy-read screen displays the clock, brew time, and programming options.
  • QUICKTOUCH PROGRAMMING WITH AUTO SHUTOFF: Easily program the 24-hour auto brew feature so you can wake up to a fresh pot of coffee or whenever you desire. 2-Hour Auto Shutoff for added safety and peace of mind with every use.

2. Breville Precision Brewer Thermal: best for customization

The Breville Precision Brewer Thermal is the pick for coffee drinkers who want more control than a conventional delayed-start brewer provides. Breville describes it as a 60-ounce precision drip coffee maker with multiple brew modes and automatic craft-filter recognition. Good Housekeeping names the Precision Brewer its best drip coffee maker among high-end models.

The product family is more complicated than the name suggests. Breville sells Thermal and Glass versions, and the carafe, included accessories, and documented features can differ between variants. Breville’s support material identifies six preset coffee modes for the Glass version, so do not automatically assume that every Thermal package includes exactly the same modes or accessories.

Choose it when you care about brew customization, filter compatibility, and repeatability more than the simplest possible interface. It is a poor value for someone who only needs a 24-hour timer and regular coffee. Confirm the exact U.S. model designation, carafe type, warranty, and included basket before ordering.

3. Wolf Gourmet Programmable Coffee Maker: best premium brewer with a built-in scale

The Wolf Gourmet Programmable Coffee Maker is aimed at buyers who want premium controls without having to weigh every dose separately. Good Housekeeping named it the best overall high-end coffee maker in its testing.

Wolf’s product literature describes a 10-cup thermal carafe, Accu-Brew technology with an integrated scale, a front-loading brew basket, a removable water reservoir, an LCD display, custom settings, and a cleaning indicator. The integrated scale can make it easier to repeat a preferred coffee-to-water ratio, while the front-loading basket and removable reservoir are helpful when the brewer sits beneath cabinets.

This recommendation needs more availability caution than the first two. The cited Wolf brochure is older than the current buying window. Before purchase, verify the current model number, retail status, warranty terms, and availability of replacement filters, carafes, and other service parts.

4. Cuisinart PerfecTemp DCC-3200: best large-capacity value

The Cuisinart DCC-3200 is the practical choice for a larger household that prefers familiar buttons, a glass carafe, and a substantial batch size. Cuisinart lists it as a 14-cup programmable brewer with regular and bold strength settings, 24-hour programmability, a 1–4-cup setting, self-cleaning, Brew Pause, and auto-off adjustable from zero to four hours.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The machine includes a gold-tone filter and a charcoal water filter. Consumer Reports describes the DCC-3200 as one of its highest-ranking basic glass-carafe drip models and reports excellent brew-performance results. That makes it a particularly strong conventional option when a thermal carafe is not essential.

Rank #2
Ninja Fresh Brew Coffee Maker, 12 Cup Glass Carafe, Stainless Steel, CE251 | Programmable, Classic & Rich brew, 70-oz. Removable Water Reservoir, Small Batch, 24-hr Delay Brew, Adjustable Warming Plate
  • 2 BREW STYLES: Classic or Rich, each brew is flavorful and never bitter with custom brew strengths.
  • 12-CUP GLASS CARAFE: Brew small or large batches of coffee – perfect for day to day or entertaining.
  • HOTTER BREWING TECHNOLOGY: Delivers even saturation and temperature control for ultra-flavorful coffee.
  • SMALL BATCH FUNCTION: Ensure your coffee is never diluted when brewing a small batch (1-4 cups).
  • WAKE UP TO HOT COFFEE: 24-hour programmable delay brew allows you to prepare your brew up to a day in advance.

A glass carafe is convenient if coffee is poured quickly and the remaining pot stays on the warming plate for only a short time. It is less attractive for slow sipping because the hot plate continues heating the coffee. Current pricing can vary by region and promotion, so compare the live price rather than relying on an old “street price.”

5. Ninja 12-Cup Programmable Coffee Maker CE251: best budget traditional drip brewer

The Ninja CE251 is the budget-oriented traditional drip pick. TechGearLab purchased and taste-tested 12 coffee makers, with input from coffee professionals and enthusiasts, and named the Ninja 12-Cup Programmable CE251 its best traditional drip brewer for most people.

This is a recommendation for shoppers who want a straightforward programmable machine rather than a specialty brewer, built-in grinder, or smart-home appliance. It is also a reminder to shop by exact model number. Ninja sells several coffee makers with different combinations of specialty modes, frothers, thermal carafes, and pod compatibility. Features from those machines should not be attributed to the CE251 unless the current CE251 listing or manual confirms them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check current stock, included filters, carafe type, and the warranty in the market where you are buying. The independent test result supports the model’s traditional-drip performance, but it does not guarantee that every retailer’s similarly named Ninja machine is the same product.

6. Braun BrewSense KF7170: best conventional 12-cup glass-carafe design

The Braun BrewSense KF7170 is a good fit for buyers who want a conventional glass-carafe brewer with more control than a basic timer machine. Braun documents a 24-hour programmable timer, auto shutoff, a 1–4-cup setting, a strength selector, a FlavorCarafe, gold-tone and charcoal filters, water filtration, a water-level indicator, and a calcification warning.

Braun says its PureFlavor system controls brewing temperature and time. The readable timer and small-batch setting are useful for couples or single drinkers who do not want to brew a full 12-cup pot every morning.

Current manufacturer support information for the KF7170 is limited, so verify the exact specifications, replacement-carafe availability, and warranty from the current Braun retail page or manual. Buyers who leave coffee warming for hours should consider a thermal model instead.

7. Hamilton Beach Professional 49500: best for adjustable strength and warming controls

The Hamilton Beach Professional 49500 stands out for control over both brewing and holding temperature. Hamilton Beach’s product documentation describes a 12-cup programmable machine with Classic, Bold, and Robust strength settings, a 1–4-cup option, a removable 60-ounce reservoir, and a cone basket.

Rank #3
Hamilton Beach FrontFill 12 Cup Programmable Drip Coffee Maker
  • EASILY FILL FROM THE FRONT: In this 12 cup drip coffee machine, it's easy to add water and coffee grounds using the FrontFill water reservoir with a swing-open brew basket thatswings open from the front, making it easy to access under cabinets
  • PROGRAMMABLE COFFEE MAKER WITH CLEANING CYCLE REMINDERS: This drip coffee maker can be easily programmed up to 24 hours in advance for hot, wake-up ready coffee. When "CLEAN" appears on the display, it's time to run the self-cleaning cycle.
  • GET YOUR FIRST CUP FAST: With Auto Pause & Pour on this programmable Hamilton Beach coffee maker, you can pour yourself a cup while coffee is still brewing.
  • COFFEE YOUR WAY: Use the Select-a-Brew brew strength selector on this coffee machine to customize your coffee. Choose from regular, bold, or 1–4 cup options to match your taste or mood.
  • EASY-VIEW WATER WINDOW: The window with clear measurement marks lets you see the water level as you fill the 12 cup coffee maker.

Its keep-warm time can be adjusted in 10-minute increments up to four hours, with low, medium, and high temperature settings. That is unusually granular for a conventional programmable brewer and makes the 49500 useful for households whose coffee-drinking schedules vary.

This is a feature-based recommendation rather than a claim that the model won an independent comparative test. The available manufacturer material is a product release and specification source. Confirm current availability and the exact included filter arrangement before buying.

8. Hamilton Beach 12-Cup Grind & Brew 45500: best programmable grind-and-brew option

The Hamilton Beach 45500 is for people who want freshly ground beans without buying a separate grinder. Hamilton Beach describes it as a fully programmable 12-cup grind-and-brew machine that automatically grinds the beans, transfers the grounds, and brews the coffee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Documented features include regular and bold settings, a 1–4-cup option, a self-rinsing grinder, a permanent gold-tone filter, freshness timing, and a two-hour auto shutoff. The integrated design saves counter space and removes one step from the morning routine.

The compromise is maintenance. Coffee oils and fine particles collect in the grinder and transfer path, even when a machine has a self-rinsing function. Clean it according to the manual and do not assume that an integrated grinder will produce better coffee than a properly maintained standalone grinder. Its advantage is convenience, not proven superiority in taste.

9. Technivorm Moccamaster KBT: best manual-control premium alternative

The Technivorm Moccamaster KBT belongs in an adjacent-alternatives section because it does not have the ordinary programmable coffee maker’s defining feature: a clock-based delayed start. It is a controlled drip brewer for people who value brewing quality, manual flow adjustment, and long-term serviceability more than waking up to an automatically brewed pot.

Moccamaster describes the KBT as a 10-cup, 40-ounce thermal brewer with a manually adjustable drip-stop basket. It brews a full carafe in approximately four to six minutes, lists a brewing temperature of 196–205°F, and identifies the model as ECBC-certified and SCA-approved. Moccamaster also documents a five-year warranty and lifetime repair support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The adjustable basket lets the user change the flow rather than relying entirely on automatic programming. Choose the KBT if you are happy to start the brew manually and want a repairable premium machine. Exclude it from a strict timer-only definition of “programmable.”

  • FILL WITH EASE: Enjoy precise water filling with the easy-to-view water window, while the Cuisinart coffee maker Brew Pause feature lets you savor a cup before the brewing cycle finishes, enhancing your experience.

10. Hamilton Beach Alexa-Enabled Smart Coffee Maker 49700: best smart-home option, subject to availability

The Hamilton Beach Alexa-Enabled Smart Coffee Maker 49700 is the specialist choice for a connected kitchen. Hamilton Beach’s product document describes a 12-cup programmable brewer that can be operated manually, through an app, or with Alexa voice commands. It also lists front-fill access, regular and bold brew options, and remote status and shutoff functions.

Smart control is useful when you want to start or stop the machine without reaching under a cabinet, but it adds an availability and compatibility question that ordinary brewers do not have. The cited Hamilton Beach launch documentation dates to 2019. Treat the 49700 as a model to verify, not as a guaranteed current recommendation: check whether it is still sold in your market, whether the app is supported, and whether replacement parts remain available.

How these recommendations were evaluated

These are not results from first-party testing by Bettesworth Construction. The ranking combines independent test evidence where it exists with manufacturer-documented features for models that fill specific buying needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Serious Eats reports testing 13 programmable coffee makers and names the OXO Brew 9-Cup its best overall.
  • Consumer Reports says it has tested more than 150 coffee makers and identifies several programmable Cuisinart models among its top performers, including the DCC-3200 in the basic glass-carafe category.
  • TechGearLab says it purchased and taste-tested 12 machines with input from coffee professionals and enthusiasts, naming the Ninja CE251 its best traditional drip brewer for most people.
  • Good Housekeeping says its Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab has tested dozens of coffee machines. Its broader coffee-machine work includes more than 1,000 brewed cups, and it names the Wolf Gourmet its best overall high-end option and the Breville Precision Brewer its best high-end drip machine.

Those sources provide useful independent signals, but their test methods, comparison groups, dates, and model versions are not identical. A recommendation based on a manufacturer’s specifications is labeled as feature-based rather than presented as a taste-test result.

A defensible scorecard for future hands-on testing

If these machines are tested directly, score them separately on programming usability, brew-temperature performance, taste or extraction, thermal-carafe heat retention, small-batch performance, cleaning and descaling effort, reservoir and basket ergonomics, noise, warranty, replacement-part availability, and current street price. Do not describe the results as “our tests” until the publisher has actually completed and documented those tests.

How to choose the right programmable coffee maker

Start with the timer

For most shoppers, programmable means a clock-based delayed start: set the time, fill the water and basket, and let the machine begin automatically. The Moccamaster KBT is deliberately different. It offers controlled drip brewing but no automatic wake-up timer.

Choose thermal or glass based on how you drink

A thermal carafe is preferable when coffee will be poured gradually over an extended period. It avoids relying on a hot plate to keep the pot warm. A glass carafe can be more convenient when everyone drinks quickly and can see how much coffee remains, but the warming plate is less suitable for holding coffee for a long time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not overlook small-batch performance

A 1–4-cup setting matters for a single drinker or couple. Without a dedicated small-batch mode, a machine designed around a full pot may not be the best fit for small daily brews. The Cuisinart DCC-3200, Braun KF7170, Hamilton Beach 49500, and Hamilton Beach 45500 all document a 1–4-cup setting.

  • SUSTAINABLE & SIMPLE: Comes with a reusable filter basket and measuring scoop, so you can skip the paper waste and enjoy a hassle-free brew every time.

Measure the space, not just the capacity

A removable reservoir is easier to fill at the sink, while front-loading baskets and reservoirs work better under low cabinets. The Wolf Gourmet and Hamilton Beach 49500 emphasize front access or a removable reservoir. Also check the clearance needed to remove the lid, basket, or carafe; capacity alone does not tell you whether a brewer will fit comfortably on the counter.

Decide whether extra automation is worth the maintenance

An integrated scale can improve dosing consistency, and a built-in grinder removes the need for a separate appliance. Both add parts that must be cleaned and eventually serviced. The Wolf’s integrated scale and Hamilton Beach 45500’s grinder are useful for specific buyers, but a simpler brewer is easier to maintain.

Account for the coffee and water

Brewer performance cannot compensate for stale coffee, the wrong grind, or poor water. OXO recommends filtered water and medium-ground coffee and gives an approximate 8-gram-per-5-ounce-cup starting ratio. Use that as a starting point, then adjust the dose and grind to taste. Fresh coffee beans are a sensible upgrade for readers who already own a capable brewer, but no particular bean merchant or subscription was tested for this guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Maintenance, filters, and replacement parts

Recurring maintenance should be part of the purchase decision. Water deposits can affect heating and flow, while coffee oils can leave stale flavors in baskets, carafes, and grinder components. Follow the cleaning and descaling schedule in the manual, especially if your water is hard; the correct interval varies by machine and water conditions.

  • OXO Brew 9-Cup: OXO sells descaling solution intended for the brewer and a replacement mixing tube compatible specifically with the Brew 9-Cup model 8710100. Do not assume a mixing tube from another OXO machine will fit.
  • Cuisinart DCC-3200: Cuisinart lists compatible charcoal water filters and replacement components. Confirm compatibility with the DCC-3200 before purchasing a generic part.
  • Moccamaster KBT: Moccamaster sells replacement carafes and compatible water outlet arms. These are useful advantages for owners who plan to keep the brewer for years.
  • Grind-and-brew models: The Hamilton Beach 45500 needs more attention around the grinder, grounds-transfer path, and permanent filter than a basic drip machine.

Useful supplies include coffee maker water filters, compatible coffee maker descaling solution, and model-specific carafes or mixing components. Check the model number printed on the appliance or manual before ordering; “fits most” is not a reliable compatibility standard for carafes, baskets, tubes, or outlet arms.

Which one should you buy?

  • Buy the OXO Brew 9-Cup if you want the best balance of simple programming, thermal holding, and independently tested performance.
  • Buy the Breville Precision Brewer Thermal if brew customization matters more than simplicity.
  • Buy the Wolf Gourmet if you want an integrated scale and premium controls, after confirming current availability.
  • Buy the Cuisinart DCC-3200 if you need a large 14-cup glass-carafe brewer with familiar controls.
  • Buy the Ninja CE251 if your priority is a budget traditional drip machine supported by comparative testing.
  • Choose the Braun KF7170 for a conventional 12-cup design with a useful small-batch setting.
  • Choose the Hamilton Beach Professional 49500 for unusually adjustable strength and warming controls.
  • Choose the Hamilton Beach 45500 if one appliance must grind and brew.
  • Choose the Moccamaster KBT only if manual operation is acceptable; it is not timer-programmable.
  • Consider the Hamilton Beach 49700 only after confirming that its app, Alexa integration, and replacement support are still available.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best programmable coffee maker overall?

The OXO Brew 9-Cup Coffee Maker is the best overall choice. Serious Eats selected it after testing 13 programmable coffee makers, and OXO documents a thermal carafe, automatic wake-up timer, 2–9-cup capacity, freshness timer, and temperature control.

Is the Technivorm Moccamaster KBT programmable?

Yes, but only as an adjacent alternative. The Moccamaster KBT has manual flow control and controlled drip brewing, but it does not have a clock-based delayed-start timer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a thermal or glass coffee carafe better?

Choose thermal if you sip coffee over an extended period and want to avoid a warming plate. Choose glass if you pour the pot quickly and prefer a visible carafe with a hot plate.

Do I need a 1–4-cup setting?

A 1–4-cup setting is useful for singles and couples because it is designed for smaller batches. The Cuisinart DCC-3200, Braun KF7170, Hamilton Beach 49500, and Hamilton Beach 45500 document this feature.

Were these coffee makers tested by the publisher?

The OXO Brew 9-Cup, Cuisinart DCC-3200, Ninja CE251, and several other models have independent testing or comparative evidence behind their placement. The Hamilton Beach feature-based picks rely primarily on manufacturer specifications, and this guide does not claim first-party testing by the publisher.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The OXO Brew 9-Cup is the safest overall recommendation for a timer-based brewer with a thermal carafe. Choose the Cuisinart DCC-3200 for maximum conventional capacity, the Breville for customization, or the Ninja CE251 for a budget traditional drip machine. The Moccamaster KBT is an excellent adjacent option, but it should not be mistaken for a clock-programmable coffee maker.
