Best overall for energy-conscious control: the Dreo Solaris Max 2nd Gen. It offers a 1,000–1,500-watt range, ECO mode, and a thermal sensor that can reduce output as the room reaches the target temperature.
But no ceramic, infrared, oil-filled, or fan-forced 1,500-watt resistance heater is automatically far more efficient than the others. The real savings come from heating a smaller zone, selecting less power, using a thermostat, and limiting runtime. Choose the Vornado AVH10 for whole-room circulation, the De’Longhi Dragon 4 for quiet steady heat, or the Dr Infrared Heater DR-968 for radiant-plus-forced-air comfort.

The most energy-efficient space heater is usually the one that heats less space for less time
Ceramic, infrared, oil-filled, fan-forced, and PTC space heaters are generally electric-resistance heaters. At the same wattage, they use roughly comparable electricity to produce heat. A 1,500-watt heater does not become dramatically more efficient merely because its heating element is ceramic, infrared, or surrounded by oil.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Real-world savings come from heating a smaller occupied area, choosing a lower output when possible, using a thermostat or ECO mode, and preventing unnecessary runtime. A 500-watt personal heater beside one seated person can use less electricity than a 1,500-watt heater warming an entire room, but only if it provides enough comfort for that use. For persistent whole-home heating, a properly selected heat pump is the more important efficiency comparison: the U.S. Department of Energy says heat pumps can reduce electricity use for heating by up to 75% compared with electric resistance.

Among portable models, the Dreo Solaris Max 2nd Gen is the strongest choice for precise ECO-mode control, the Vornado AVH10 is a good whole-room circulation option, the De’Longhi Dragon 4 TRD40615E is suited to quiet, steady heat, and the Dr Infrared Heater DR-968 is worth considering when radiant warmth and quiet operation matter more than compact size. None should be described as universally cheapest to operate: electricity use still depends on wattage, thermostat cycling, room conditions, and your local electricity rate.
What “energy-efficient” means for a portable electric heater
There are three different kinds of efficiency to consider when comparing space heaters.
| Type of efficiency | What it means | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Conversion efficiency | How effectively electricity becomes heat at the point of use. | Most electric-resistance heaters are broadly similar. The DOE describes electric resistance and infrared heating as having an effective coefficient of performance of 1. |
| Control efficiency | How well the heater avoids running harder or longer than necessary. | A thermostat, accurate thermal sensor, ECO mode, low-power setting, timer, and automatic cycling. |
| Comfort efficiency | How effectively the heater makes the occupied area feel comfortable. | Personal-zone heating, useful air circulation, radiant warmth, and a heater sized for the room and temperature difference. |
This distinction explains why two heaters with the same 1,500-watt maximum can feel different without one producing substantially more heat per kilowatt-hour. A fan-forced model may distribute warmth faster. An infrared model may make a person in its line of sight feel warm sooner. An oil-filled radiator may stay warm and quiet after its element cycles off. Those are meaningful comfort and control differences, but they are not proof of superior resistance-heating conversion efficiency.
Our picks by use case
| Best for | Model | Why it stands out | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Precise ECO-mode control | Dreo Solaris Max 2nd Gen | 1,000–1,500-watt range, ECO mode, and a thermal sensor with 1°F temperature adjustments from 41°F to 95°F. | Its ceramic element does not make it inherently more efficient than another resistance heater at the same output. |
| Whole-room circulation | Vornado AVH10 | Vortex Heat Circulation, automatic climate control, two heat settings, fan-only operation, and output that can reduce as the room approaches the set temperature. | Circulation improves heat distribution, but consumption still follows selected wattage and runtime. |
| Quiet, steady heat | De’Longhi Dragon 4 TRD40615E | Oil-filled radiator design, digital controls, adjustable thermostat, Eco Plus, three heat settings, and quiet operation. | The sealed oil reservoir smooths heat delivery; it does not create more heat per kilowatt-hour. |
| Radiant-plus-forced-air comfort | Dr Infrared Heater DR-968 | 1,500-watt infrared and PTC heating, thermostat, remote, timer, casters, and quiet operation. | Room-size and decibel claims depend on conditions and should not be treated as universal guarantees. |
Best for precise ECO-mode control: Dreo Solaris Max 2nd Gen
For shoppers who want the most deliberate control, the Dreo Solaris Max 2nd Gen is the best fit in this group. Dreo lists it as a 25-inch ceramic space heater with a 1,000–1,500-watt output range, ECO mode, and a thermal sensor that supports temperature adjustment from 41°F to 95°F in 1°F increments.
The efficiency advantage here is control. If you set a target temperature and use ECO mode, the heater can reduce or modulate output rather than operating continuously at maximum power. That can reduce runtime compared with an always-on switch, particularly in a reasonably insulated office, bedroom, or enclosed workspace.
Do not interpret the ceramic construction as a loophole in the normal wattage limits of electric resistance heating. At 1,500 watts, it draws the same maximum electrical power as other 1,500-watt resistance heaters. Its appeal is the sensor and operating logic, not a claim that it produces dramatically more heat from the same electricity.
Choose it if: you want adjustable output and a temperature target for a personal room or regularly occupied workspace.

Use caution if: you intend to use a portable heater as permanent whole-home heating or expect its advertised room coverage to work identically in every building.
Best for whole-room circulation: Vornado AVH10
The Vornado AVH10 is designed to move warm air through a room using Vortex Heat Circulation rather than concentrating all of the heat immediately in front of the appliance. Its listed features include two heat settings, fan-only operation, automatic climate control, a cool-touch case, and automatic safety shutoff. Vornado also lists a five-year satisfaction guarantee.
Vornado’s product information says the AVH10 can lower element wattage and fan speed as the room approaches the selected temperature. Its high and low settings are listed at up to 1,500 and 750 watts. That gives the heater a practical control advantage over a unit that simply runs at one fixed output.
Independent testing from TechGearLab ranked the AVH10 highly among the tested space heaters, with especially strong room-heating and consistent-warmth results but weaker direct-heating performance. That supports a whole-room circulation recommendation, not a claim that it is the most energy-efficient model for every situation.
Choose it if: you need warmth distributed around a room instead of intense heat directly in front of the heater.
Rank #2
- Powerful heat that fits everywhere: DREO space heaters for indoor combines Hyperamics 1500W advanced PTC system with a new heat funnel design to deliver heat within seconds and enhance warm air circulation for up to 200% farther reach than traditional heaters.
- Unbreakable safety:DREO goes beyond the unexpected to deliver peace of mind with every room heater. - Ultimate temperature control: The enhanced NTC chipset brings more precision to turn your space heater with thermostat into a smart heating powerhouse, allowing you to set heat on a wider range from 41-95℉ with 1℉ increments, saving you energy while keeping you comfortable.
- Cozy quietness: No more choosing between quiet or warmth, DREO's heater for bedroom warms quietly thanks to its brushless DC motor with frictionless performance and a winglet fan design that reduces turbulence, reducing noise to only 34dB.
- Fits into your lifestyle: This portable heater handle makes it easier to carry and is equipped with multiple heating levels and modes to heat as you like (Power heat, ECO, Fan Only). It also features handy extras for a hassle-free experience (remote control, 12-hour timer, mute, child lock, and memory function).
Use caution if: you are heating only one person at a desk. In that case, a lower-wattage personal heater may consume less electricity than circulating heat through the whole room.
Best for quiet, steady heat: De’Longhi Dragon 4 TRD40615E
The De’Longhi Dragon 4 TRD40615E is a 1,500-watt oil-filled radiator for users who value quiet operation and a less abrupt heating pattern. It has three heat settings, a digital control panel, adjustable thermostat, Eco Plus function, anti-freeze setting, thermal shutoff, child lock, and preassembled wheels. The oil reservoir is permanently sealed and does not need to be refilled.
Oil-filled radiators take time to warm up, but the oil mass retains heat after the element cycles off. That can make the room feel steadier and reduce the sensation of repeated hot-and-cold bursts. It does not mean the heater produces more heat from each kilowatt-hour than a ceramic or fan-forced resistance model. The U.S. version is specified for 120 volts, 60 hertz, and 1,500 watts.

This is a sensible bedroom or office choice when silence matters, but portable-heater safety rules still apply. The Consumer Product Safety Commission advises turning portable heaters off when sleeping. Do not treat the radiator’s quietness, thermostat, or anti-freeze mode as permission to leave it operating unattended overnight.
Choose it if: you want quiet, gradual heat and do not need rapid air movement.
Use caution if: you need immediate warmth, have limited floor space, or are tempted to place the unit close to bedding, curtains, furniture, or other combustibles.
Best for radiant-plus-forced-air heating: Dr Infrared Heater DR-968
The Dr Infrared Heater DR-968 combines infrared and PTC heating in a 1,500-watt portable unit. Product materials describe an adjustable thermostat, remote control, timer, caster wheels, and quiet operation. Its mix of radiant and forced-air heating can suit someone who wants both direct personal warmth and some room circulation.

Retailer and manufacturer materials may advertise figures such as coverage of 576 square feet, 39 dB operation, or a percentage increase in heat. Treat those as product or retailer claims rather than universal performance guarantees unless a current independent test supports the exact figure. Availability, price, and review counts can also change, so verify the live listing before purchase.
Choose it if: you prefer radiant comfort, want a remote and timer, and have enough floor area for a larger portable heater.
Use caution if: you are relying on the advertised room-size rating in a poorly insulated, high-ceiling, or especially cold space.

- 2 in 1 heater fan: This ceramic heater offers dual heating modes (1500W/750W) plus a cool air fan, making it ideal for both winter and summer. With automatic thermostat control, it cycles on and off to maintain your preset temperature without any manual adjustment. A practical and thoughtful gift for working from home, or for family, friends, and colleagues during the cold season.
- Multi-protection safety system: These heaters are made of V0 flame retardant material avoiding any fire hazard. Automatic safety shut-off system will shut the heater off when the heater overheat. The tip-over protection system will automatically shuts off with a loud beep if knocked over by accident and it will come back on automatically if it is up righted.
- Portable and Powerful: The mini heater with build in carry handle helps to reinforce the potential of rather low electrical bills by using at the place where you need when you don't want to warm the full house with other centralized heaters.
- Quiet and fast heating: The ceramic space heater is impressively quieter than most conversation levels, which is quiet enough for most people to use in a bedroom while sleeping or working. With PTC heating tech and high speed fan, it is rated to heat up to 200 square feet in seconds, which would cover most bedrooms, offices, bathrooms and smaller living rooms.
- Upgrade abs material: Upgrade abs material applied, which is more flame resident. The room heater with six feet lead cord and 2 prong connection has a long lasting life. The space heater for indoor use makes a noticeable difference and works well in small to medium rooms when positioned properly.
For example, a 1,500-watt heater operating continuously for one hour uses:
1,500 ÷ 1,000 × 1 hour = 1.5 kWh
At an electricity rate of $0.10 per kWh, that would cost approximately $0.15 per hour. That rate is an illustration, not a national price. Substitute the rate on your utility bill for a useful estimate.
| Heater output | Electricity used in one hour at continuous operation | Approximate cost at $0.20/kWh |
|---|---|---|
| 500 watts | 0.5 kWh | $0.10 |
| 750 watts | 0.75 kWh | $0.15 |
| 1,000 watts | 1.0 kWh | $0.20 |
| 1,500 watts | 1.5 kWh | $0.30 |
Actual consumption is often lower than the continuous figure because a thermostat cycles the element off after the room reaches its set temperature. It can also be lower when the heater is used on a low setting. Conversely, a drafty room, open door, high ceiling, or large temperature difference may keep the heater running most of the time.
A plug-in electricity monitor can help measure actual consumption, but use one only if it is rated for the heater’s load and used according to its instructions. A 1,500-watt heater draws approximately 12.5 amps on a nominal 120-volt supply, so it represents a substantial load on a household circuit.
How to reduce space-heater energy use
- Heat the smallest practical zone. Close doors between the occupied room and unheated areas, and use a personal heater when only one person needs warmth.
- Choose the lowest setting that maintains comfort. A 750-watt setting uses half the electricity per hour of a 1,500-watt setting when both operate continuously.
- Use a thermostat or ECO mode. A target temperature is more useful than a simple always-on switch because it can stop or reduce output after the room warms.
- Use a timer for predictable occupancy. Schedule heating for the period you actually need it rather than warming an empty room.
- Reduce drafts safely. Close windows and doors, use appropriate weatherstripping, and address obvious air leakage. Never cover a heater or block its intake or outlet.
- Place the heater where it can work properly. Keep it on a stable, level floor with unobstructed airflow. Do not hide it behind furniture.
- Do not stack portable heaters to solve a sizing problem. Multiple resistance heaters can quickly increase electrical demand and fire risk. If a room cannot be heated adequately, investigate insulation, air leakage, central heating, or a heat-pump solution.
When a space heater is the wrong efficiency solution
Portable resistance heaters are useful for supplemental heat, a temporarily occupied room, a cold office, or one person working in a limited area. They are usually a poor long-term substitute for a central system when the goal is to heat an entire home.
The DOE says modern heat pumps can reduce electricity use for heating by up to 75% compared with electric-resistance heating. ENERGY STAR treats heat pumps for space heating and cooling as a separate high-efficiency category. A heat pump moves heat rather than converting every unit of electricity directly into heat, so it can deliver more heating output per unit of electricity under suitable conditions.
For a home with persistently high heating bills, compare the cost of a properly sized heat pump, weatherization, and control improvements instead of buying several portable heaters. A home energy audit can help identify insulation gaps, duct losses, air leakage, and thermostat or equipment problems before you spend money on additional heating capacity. Eligibility for utility rebates and energy-efficiency programs varies by location.
Recommended Free Tools
An air-source or other heat-pump system also involves installation cost, outdoor conditions, electrical requirements, and regional climate considerations. The “up to 75%” figure is not a promise for every building or operating condition; it is a comparison with electric resistance under the conditions evaluated by the DOE.
What about infrared, ceramic, oil-filled, and PTC heaters?
| Heater type | Practical strength | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Ceramic | Often compact and capable of fan-assisted heat distribution; models may offer useful thermostats and electronic controls. | That the ceramic element produces substantially more heat per watt than another resistance element. |
| Infrared | Can provide noticeable direct warmth to people and objects in its radiant path, often with quiet operation. | That advertised room coverage or percentage heat improvements apply to every room. |
| Oil-filled radiator | Quiet, gradual heat with thermal mass that smooths delivery after the element cycles off. | That stored heat makes the heater more electrically efficient at the same wattage. |
| PTC | Common in electronically controlled fan heaters and can support compact designs and adjustable output. | That the PTC label alone guarantees lower operating cost. |
| Fan-forced | Moves heat through a room quickly and can improve temperature distribution. | That faster circulation reduces electricity use if the heater still runs at the same output for the same time. |
Space-heater safety: the rules that matter most
Portable heaters are high-load appliances and fire hazards when placed or powered incorrectly. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that portable heaters, including electric space heaters, were involved in an average of 1,600 fires, 70 deaths, and 150 injuries per year from 2020 through 2022.
- Keep the heater at least three feet from curtains, furniture, bedding, clothing, paper, packaging, insulation, and other combustible materials.
- Plug an electric heater directly into a wall outlet. Do not use an extension cord or power strip unless the manufacturer and applicable safety guidance specifically permit that configuration; CPSC’s general guidance is direct wall connection.
- Use a stable, level floor. Do not place the heater on a bed, chair, countertop, unstable platform, or other elevated surface unless the product is specifically designed for that installation.
- Keep air inlets and outlets clear. Never cover the heater or use it to dry clothing, towels, finishes, or other materials.
- Choose a unit with automatic overheat protection and tip-over shutoff, and verify that it is listed and labeled by an appropriate safety-certification body.
- Turn it off when leaving the room and when sleeping. A thermostat, timer, or quiet oil reservoir does not make unattended operation risk-free.
UL materials identify ANSI/UL 1278 as the standard for movable and wall- or ceiling-hung electric room heaters and describe tip-over testing requirements for listed portable heaters. Look for an actual certification label from a recognized testing body rather than relying only on vague marketing language such as “safe design.”
Special considerations for construction and renovation work
On a construction or remodeling project, a portable heater may be useful in an enclosed, occupied workspace, but the surroundings can make normal household precautions more important. Keep the unit away from sawdust, cardboard, plastic sheeting, insulation, solvents, coatings, stored materials, and temporary furnishings. Keep it out of wet areas and do not use it to accelerate drying unless the heater’s instructions and the project’s safety plan specifically allow that application.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo not run a high-wattage portable heater from an improvised temporary setup. Confirm the voltage, circuit capacity, outlet condition, and jobsite rules before use. A 1,500-watt heater on a 120-volt supply draws about 12.5 amps, leaving limited capacity on a typical 15-amp circuit once other tools or equipment are connected. If an outlet, cord, plug, or receptacle becomes hot, stop using the heater and have the electrical setup inspected by a qualified person.

- RAPID HEATING TECHNOLOGY: Ceramic heating provides fast and efficient heat in minutes with only 43 dB noise level, keeping you warm quickly on cold days.
- NOT FOR HUMID ENVIRONMENTS: Please avoid using this heater in Bathrooms, Laundry Rooms, or other high-moisture areas.
For unfinished buildings, multiple rooms, freeze protection, or extended winter work, temporary heat should be planned as a system rather than improvised with several portable resistance heaters. Account for ventilation, combustible materials, electrical distribution, equipment instructions, and the project’s documented safety requirements. Never bring an unvented fuel-burning heater indoors as an allegedly efficient substitute.
Why unvented gas and kerosene heaters are not an efficiency upgrade
Do not recommend unvented fuel-burning heaters for indoor use merely because their fuel appears cheaper or because they can produce substantial heat. CPSC warns about fire and carbon-monoxide risks associated with home-heating equipment, and its indoor-air-quality guidance highlights concerns with unvented kerosene or gas heaters.
Indoor heating equipment must be selected for the space, fuel, ventilation, installation, and applicable safety requirements. A portable electric heater does not eliminate every hazard, but it avoids the combustion and carbon-monoxide concerns associated with unvented indoor fuel-burning appliances.
Buying checklist
- Start with the use case: one person at a desk, one bedroom, a living room, or temporary jobsite heat.
- Choose the smallest output that can meet the need. A personal heater may be the better choice when you do not need to heat the entire room.
- Prefer a real thermostat or thermal sensor over a basic always-on switch.
- Look for a genuine low-power mode, timer, automatic overheat shutoff, and tip-over protection.
- Verify voltage and wattage. In the United States, many full-size models are 120-volt, 1,500-watt appliances.
- Check the plug, outlet, and circuit. Connect directly to a suitable wall outlet, not a power strip.
- Keep airflow unobstructed and place the unit on a stable floor.
- Treat room-size ratings as conditional. Insulation, ceiling height, outdoor temperature, drafts, and the desired temperature rise all matter.
- Verify current certification, instructions, price, and availability before buying. Product specifications and retailer listings can change.
- For persistent whole-home heating, compare a heat pump, weatherization, and control improvements instead of stacking portable resistance heaters.
How Consumer Reports testing can help
Consumer Reports says its space-heater evaluations include standard-room heating, direct spot-heating, noise, and fire-safety testing. Those categories are useful because a heater that performs well for direct personal warmth may not distribute heat effectively through a room, and a model that heats strongly may be noisier or less convenient.
Consumer Reports also uses a Green Choice designation for some models that minimize energy use and other environmental impacts. Check the current Consumer Reports ranking before repeating that label for a specific heater. It should not be inferred for every model discussed here, and a designation can change as products and testing change.
Bottom line
For a portable electric heater, buy for control and the area you actually occupy, not for an unsupported claim that one resistance-heating technology is inherently more efficient. The Dreo Solaris Max 2nd Gen is the best match for adjustable ECO-mode control. The Vornado AVH10 is better when whole-room air circulation is the priority. The De’Longhi Dragon 4 TRD40615E offers quiet, steady radiator heat, while the Dr Infrared Heater DR-968 combines radiant comfort with forced air.
Use the lowest practical setting, let the thermostat cycle, calculate cost from your own utility rate, and follow the three-foot, direct-wall-outlet, and turn-it-off-when-sleeping rules. If you need to heat a whole home regularly, investigate a heat pump or energy audit instead of searching for a “magic” 1,500-watt space heater.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are infrared space heaters more energy-efficient than ceramic or oil-filled heaters?
Are infrared space heaters more energy-efficient than ceramic or oil-filled heaters?
How much does it cost to run a 1,500-watt space heater?
Not automatically. At the same wattage, conventional electric-resistance heaters use broadly comparable electricity to produce heat. Infrared models can feel warmer sooner when you are in their radiant path, while ceramic and oil-filled models may distribute or maintain heat differently. The practical savings come from heating less space, using a lower setting, and avoiding unnecessary runtime.
Can I leave a portable space heater on while I sleep?
Use watts ÷ 1,000 × hours used × your electricity rate. A 1,500-watt heater uses 1.5 kWh for every hour it runs continuously. At $0.20 per kWh, that is approximately $0.30 per hour before thermostat cycling reduces actual consumption.
What is more efficient for heating an entire home: a space heater or a heat pump?
The Consumer Product Safety Commission advises turning portable heaters off when sleeping. Do not rely on a timer, thermostat, quiet operation, or tip-over protection as a substitute for that guidance.
Can I use a space heater on a construction site?
A properly selected heat pump is generally the more efficient whole-home option. The U.S. Department of Energy says heat pumps can reduce electricity use for heating by up to 75% compared with electric-resistance heating. Actual savings depend on the equipment, climate, building, electricity rates, and operating conditions.

Is an oil-filled radiator cheaper to run than a ceramic heater?
Only where the equipment, electrical setup, site rules, and safety plan permit it. Keep the heater away from sawdust, plastic, insulation, solvents, finishes, and wet areas; plug it directly into a suitable wall outlet; and do not improvise temporary heat with overloaded circuits or extension cords.
What should I look for in a safe portable space heater?
Not at the same wattage and runtime. Oil-filled radiators can provide quieter, steadier heat because their thermal mass retains warmth after the element cycles off, but they do not inherently produce more heat per kilowatt-hour than another electric-resistance heater.
Are advertised room-size ratings reliable?
Look for recognized safety certification, tip-over protection, overheat shutoff, a thermostat, and a timer. Keep the unit at least three feet from combustibles, place it on a stable floor, plug it directly into a wall outlet, and turn it off when leaving the room or going to sleep.
When should I get an energy audit instead of buying another heater?
Treat them as estimates, not guarantees. Required output varies with insulation, drafts, ceiling height, outdoor temperature, room layout, and the desired temperature rise. A heater rated for a particular square footage may perform differently in a drafty or poorly insulated building.
What does ECO mode do on a space heater?
If you need portable heaters regularly, have high heating bills, or cannot maintain comfort despite long runtimes, an energy audit can identify air leakage, insulation gaps, duct losses, and control problems. Improving the building envelope or comparing a heat-pump system may save more than adding another resistance heater.
Does a 1,500-watt heater use 1,500 watts all the time?
ECO mode typically uses a thermostat or thermal sensor to reduce output or stop the heating element as the room approaches a selected temperature. It can reduce unnecessary runtime, but it does not make the heating element itself more efficient than another resistance heater at the same wattage.
Why is a 1,500-watt heater a heavy electrical load?
Only while operating continuously at its maximum setting. A thermostat may cycle the element off, and a low setting may use less power. A 1,500-watt heater running continuously for one hour uses 1.5 kilowatt-hours.
Can I use an unvented gas or kerosene heater indoors because it is more efficient?
On a nominal 120-volt supply, a 1,500-watt heater draws approximately 12.5 amps. That can use most of the capacity of a typical 15-amp circuit, especially if tools or other appliances share the circuit. Use a suitable wall outlet and stop if the plug or receptacle becomes hot.
What does Consumer Reports test in space heaters?
Do not treat an unvented fuel-burning heater as an energy-efficient indoor substitute. CPSC highlights fire, carbon-monoxide, and indoor-air-quality concerns associated with home-heating equipment and unvented gas or kerosene heaters.
Does the De’Longhi Dragon 4 need its oil refilled?
Consumer Reports says its evaluations include standard-room heating, direct spot-heating, noise, and fire-safety testing. It also uses a Green Choice designation for some models, but that label should be verified in the current ranking rather than assumed for every heater.
What are the Vornado AVH10 heat settings?
No. The U.S. product information describes its oil reservoir as permanently sealed. It does not require refilling.

The Bottom Line
The best energy-saving portable heater is the one that heats only the space you need, uses the lowest practical wattage, and cycles through a reliable thermostat or ECO mode. Electric-resistance heaters are broadly similar in conversion efficiency; the bigger savings come from zone heating, shorter runtime, and better controls. For whole-home heating, compare a properly selected heat pump instead.
