The 5 Best Air Purifiers You Can Buy Online for Different Room Sizes

Compare five air purifiers by room size, CADR, controls, filtration design, maintenance, and ozone-related caveats. The Coway AP-1512HH is the balanced medium-room pick, while the Blueair 211i Max leads for large spaces.

Short answer: The Coway Airmega AP-1512HH is the best default for most medium bedrooms, offices, and living rooms. Choose the Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max for a large room or open plan, the Levoit Core 400S-P for smart controls, the Winix 5500-2 for a washable prefilter and conventional carbon stage, and the Shark Air Purifier MAX HP202 when its large one-air-change-per-hour coverage claim and low-maintenance positioning are your priorities.

There is no single best purifier for every home. Portable models clean individual rooms, and CADR is more useful than an unqualified square-foot claim when comparing particle-cleaning performance. The guide below explains the trade-offs and the numbers that matter.

How to choose the right purifier

The most important specification is not the largest square-foot number on the box. It is the amount of filtered air the machine can deliver to the room, usually expressed as CADR—clean air delivery rate—in cubic feet per minute (CFM).

For a rough comparison, use this formula when the room has an 8-foot ceiling:

Levoit Air Purifier for Home Pets Hair Allergens in Bedroom Quiet Purifiers | Quiet HEPA Sleep Mode, Remove 99.97% Dust Pollen Smoke Pet Odor, AHAM VERIFIDE, Core300-P, Up to 1073 ft², White
  • WHY CHOOSE AHAM VERIFIDE AIR PURIFIERS: AHAM (Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers) is an ANSI-accredited organization that sets strict standards for appliance performance. Air purifiers with the AHAM VERIFIDE seal have been independently tested for air cleaning performance and energy efficiency. When you choose an AHAM certified air purifier, you're choosing a product trusted for reliable and effective indoor air quality improvement
  • HIGH-PERFORMANCE AIR PURIFICATION: A powerful 56W high-torque motor and 143 CFM CADR delivers fast, effective cleaning. The Levoit Original Filter is HEPA-grade while operating in Sleep Mode (Based on IEST RP C001.7). Ideal for home, bedroom, or office
  • AHAM VERIFIDE, PROVEN PERFORMANCE: AHAM VERIFIDE with a CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) rating of 143 CFM for smoke, 153 CFM for dust, and 167 CFM for pollen—refreshing air in a 222 ft² room 4.8 times per hour and a 1,073 ft² room once per hour
  • GENUINE REPLACEMENT FILTERS: For the best performance and longest lifespan, use official Levoit filters designed specifically for Levoit air purifiers. Levoit replacement filters ensure the best fit and high-efficiency filtration, while off-brand filters may be unreliable and may damage your Levoit air purifier
  • FIND COMFORT: Our filter has strong filtration performance of fine particles. 99.97% filtration efficiency for 0.1 to 0.3μm airborne particulates, including pollen, dust, and animal dander allergens. Tested by an independent lab

Required CADR ≈ room area × desired air changes per hour × ceiling height ÷ 60

At 4.8 air changes per hour (ACH), that works out to approximately 0.64 CFM per square foot. A 300-square-foot room therefore needs roughly 192 CFM for that target. This is why the Coway AP-1512HH, with a smoke CADR of 233 CFM, is listed for 361 square feet at 4.8 ACH—not for the much larger area shown in its less-demanding one-ACH claim.

Smoke CADR is generally the most useful single comparison number for small airborne particles. Dust and pollen CADR values are also useful, but compare the same pollutant rating wherever possible. A manufacturer’s one-ACH coverage number should not be treated as equivalent to another model’s 4.8-ACH rating.

Our five picks at a glance

Purifier Best for Room-size reference Notable features Main caution
Coway Airmega AP-1512HH Most medium rooms 361 sq. ft. at 4.8 ACH Auto and Eco modes, particle sensor, filter indicator Its larger one- and two-ACH figures describe slower cleaning
Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max Large rooms and open plans 674 sq. ft. at 4.8 ACH App, PM1/PM2.5/PM10 sensing, automatic and night modes Electronic filtration and current emissions documentation deserve attention
Levoit Core 400S-P Smart controls at a medium-room size 358 sq. ft. at 4.8 ACH VeSync app, Alexa and Google Assistant, air-quality display Its published CADR format is not identical to the pollutant-specific figures above
Winix 5500-2 Washable prefilter and dedicated carbon stage 370 sq. ft. verified room Washable prefilter, carbon filter, HEPA filter, PlasmaWave PlasmaWave is an electronic feature, not purely mechanical filtration
Shark Air Purifier MAX HP202 Large stated coverage and low-maintenance positioning Up to 1,200 sq. ft. at 1 ACH CleanSense IQ, real-time feedback, four fan speeds The 1,200-square-foot claim is not comparable to a 4.8-ACH rating

1. Coway Airmega Mighty AP-1512HH: best for most medium rooms

For a bedroom, home office, nursery, or ordinary living room, the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH is the most balanced choice in this group. Coway lists a 4.8-ACH room size of 361 square feet and published CADR figures of 233 CFM for smoke, 246 CFM for dust, and 240 CFM for pollen.

Its controls are straightforward rather than app-dependent. The purifier has a particle-sensitive automatic mode, Eco mode, a filter indicator, and a three-stage arrangement consisting of a prefilter, deodorization filter, and HEPA filter. The listed sound range is 24–53 dB, so it can run quietly at lower settings while retaining a higher setting for faster cleaning.

Why it stands out

  • Strong medium-room throughput: its smoke CADR is a useful benchmark for bedrooms and offices.
  • Simple operation: automatic and Eco modes cover the main everyday use cases without requiring an account or phone app.
  • Useful particle response: the automatic mode can increase fan speed when the particle sensor detects poorer air quality.
  • Manageable footprint: it is better suited to normal rooms than the larger high-throughput units in this list.

Important limitation

Coway also presents larger room figures based on one or two air changes per hour. Those figures are not wrong, but they represent less frequent air cleaning. Use the 361-square-foot 4.8-ACH figure when deciding whether this is appropriate for a regularly occupied room. For a very large open-plan area, one AP-1512HH may clean slowly; use multiple units or a larger purifier instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Coway lists an expected life of one year for the HEPA filter and six months for the deodorization filter. Those are planning estimates, not guarantees. Smoke, pets, construction dust, cooking, and continuous high-speed operation can shorten filter life. Confirm the indicator and the manufacturer’s current instructions before replacing filters.

2. Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max: best for large rooms and open plans

The Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max is the high-throughput option here. Blueair lists it for 674 square feet at 4.8 ACH, with CADR values of 435 CFM for smoke, 452 CFM for dust, and 450 CFM for pollen. That makes it the natural choice for a large living room, open-plan apartment, spacious home office, or other area where a medium-room purifier would need to work continuously at high speed.

The 211i Max includes app control, automatic and night modes, and sensors that report PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 readings. Its listed sound range is 23–53 dB and its listed energy consumption is 46 W. The app can be useful for scheduling and remote control, while automatic mode can adjust the fan when the sensor detects changing particle levels.

Filtration and buying caution

Blueair describes its HEPASilent system as a combination of mechanical and electrostatic filtration, with an activated-carbon layer for odor support. Independent testing outlet RTINGS also describes the model as having an ionization component. That does not by itself establish how much ozone the unit emits in every operating mode, but it is a relevant distinction for buyers who specifically want a strictly mechanical purifier or who are sensitive to ozone concerns. Review the current model documentation and emissions certification before buying, and do not assume that an electronic feature is harmless simply because the product also contains a filter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Blueair notes that the CADR and room-size figures on its product listing were updated to meet newer U.S. Department of Energy standards. Older reviews, packaging, and comparison charts may therefore show different numbers. Use the current listing for the exact model rather than combining an old CADR with a new coverage claim.

Who should buy it?

Choose the 211i Max when room size and particle-cleaning speed matter more than the smallest footprint or simplest controls. It is especially compelling for large spaces affected by smoke, dust, or pet allergens. If the room is only a typical bedroom or office, its higher capacity may be unnecessary unless you want faster cleaning at a lower fan setting.

Blueair says the filter can last up to nine months depending on use and pollution. Treat that as an upper-end estimate rather than a fixed schedule, and inspect the filter indicator and actual conditions in the room.

3. Levoit Core 400S-P: best smart-value option for a medium room

The Levoit Core 400S-P is the best fit for buyers who want connected controls and a medium-room format. Levoit lists 358 square feet at 4.8 ACH, 1,718 square feet at one ACH, and a published CADR of 231 CFM. Its listed noise range is 22–52 dB and its rated power is 38 W.

Its main advantage is the control system. The VeSync app provides scheduling and remote operation, and the purifier works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It also reports real-time air-quality information, includes sleep mode, and has a filter indicator. Those features make it useful when the purifier needs to run on a schedule, respond to changing conditions, or be controlled without walking across the room.

A fair comparison with the other picks

The official Core 400S-P specification presents one CADR number rather than the separate smoke, dust, and pollen figures published for the Coway and Blueair models in this guide. The 231-CFM figure is useful, but it should not automatically be read as 231 CFM for each pollutant or treated as a perfectly identical test result. The model’s 358-square-foot 4.8-ACH figure is the cleaner room-size comparison.

Choose the Levoit over the Coway when app scheduling, voice control, and remote monitoring are central to the purchase. Choose the Coway when you prefer simpler controls and a specification sheet that breaks out smoke, dust, and pollen CADR. Neither should be selected for a large open plan solely because of its one-ACH coverage number.

4. Winix 5500-2: best washable-prefilter and carbon design

The Winix 5500-2 is a practical option for buyers who prefer a familiar rectangular purifier with a washable prefilter and a separate carbon stage. Winix’s current user manual identifies it as a 370-square-foot verified-room model. The unit measures 15 by 8.2 by 23.6 inches, weighs 15 pounds, and carries a 70 W power rating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its filtration layout includes a washable prefilter, carbon filter, and HEPA filter. The washable prefilter can catch larger dust and hair before they reach the finer filter, potentially reducing the amount of disposable filter material used for that first stage. Follow Winix’s cleaning instructions carefully; a washable prefilter does not mean the HEPA or carbon components should be washed.

What to know about PlasmaWave

Winix also includes PlasmaWave, an electronic air-cleaning feature. That means the 5500-2 should not be described as a purely mechanical purifier, even though it has conventional filter stages. Buyers concerned about ozone should review the current model’s emissions certification and operating documentation, and should use the available controls according to their own preference. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s general guidance is to avoid air cleaners that intentionally generate ozone.

The Winix is a good match for everyday dust, dander, and household odors when a washable prefilter is more important than app-based control. It is less suitable for a buyer who wants no electronic air-cleaning feature at all, or who needs the higher airflow of a large-room model.

5. Shark Air Purifier MAX HP202: best for maximum stated coverage and low-maintenance positioning

The Shark Air Purifier MAX HP202 appeals to shoppers who begin with the biggest coverage number. Shark states that it can clean up to 1,200 square feet based on one air change per hour. It also uses an Anti-Allergen NanoSeal filter, which Shark says captures 99.98% of particles in the cited test range, and includes CleanSense IQ real-time air-quality feedback and four fan speeds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is the right pick only when you understand what the headline number means. One air change per hour is a relatively low cleaning rate compared with the 4.8-ACH room ratings used for the Coway, Blueair, and Levoit comparisons. A 1,200-square-foot claim at one ACH should therefore not be interpreted as proof that the HP202 will clean a 1,200-square-foot open plan as quickly as a purifier rated for that area at 4.8 ACH.

Consider the HP202 if you value Shark’s low-maintenance positioning, visible air-quality feedback, and a large stated room area. If your priority is the fastest particle removal during heavy smoke or dust, compare its CADR and operating assumptions with the alternatives rather than relying on the square-foot headline alone.

CADR, HEPA, carbon, and electronic features explained

CADR is the best starting point for particle performance

CADR combines airflow and filtration performance into a number that helps compare how quickly a purifier removes airborne particles. Higher smoke CADR generally means more cleaned air per minute, provided the tests and operating conditions are comparable. A purifier with a high CADR may also clean a smaller room quickly and quietly at a lower setting.

Coverage figures are more difficult to compare because manufacturers may use different air-change assumptions, ceiling heights, test standards, and fan settings. Look for the ACH figure next to the square footage. If it is missing, treat the coverage number cautiously.

HEPA and prefilters do different jobs

A prefilter catches larger material such as hair and visible dust. The fine-particle filter does the more demanding particle-cleaning work. A washable prefilter can reduce maintenance costs for that first stage, but it does not make the entire filter assembly washable or permanent.

Activated carbon helps with odors but is not a universal gas solution

Carbon can support odor reduction, but a small carbon layer should not be presented as a guarantee that the purifier will remove every odor or volatile organic compound (VOC). Carbon capacity, contact time, airflow, pollutant concentration, and the type and amount of carbon all matter. If the source is a continuing leak, damp building material, combustion problem, or active construction product, remove or control the source rather than expecting a portable purifier to solve it.

Be cautious with ozone and ionization claims

The EPA advises readers to avoid air cleaners that intentionally generate ozone. This matters when comparing products with ionization, plasma, electrostatic, or similar electronic features. The Blueair 211i Max and Winix 5500-2 both require more careful reading than a description that simply says “HEPA purifier” would suggest. If ozone is a concern—particularly during wildfire-smoke use—check current emissions certifications and manufacturer operating documentation before purchase.

Which purifier is right for your room?

  • Bedroom or home office up to roughly 350–370 square feet: start with the Coway AP-1512HH or Levoit Core 400S-P. Choose Coway for simpler controls and pollutant-specific CADR figures; choose Levoit for app and voice features.
  • Large living room or open-plan area: choose the Blueair 211i Max when its current specifications and electronic filtration approach suit you. If the area is unusually large or divided by walls, two smaller units may distribute airflow better than one unit at the edge of the space.
  • Dust, dander, and ordinary household odors: the Winix 5500-2 is a sensible choice if you value its washable prefilter and carbon stage.
  • Large headline coverage and low-maintenance positioning: consider the Shark HP202, but compare its one-ACH figure with competitors’ higher-ACH claims before deciding.
  • Several rooms or an entire home: do not assume one portable purifier will clean the whole house. Portable units are room-level appliances. Use multiple strategically placed units or investigate whole-home HVAC filtration where the building’s system and filter compatibility support it.

Maintenance and replacement filters

Filter availability is part of the purchase price, even when the initial purifier cost looks attractive. Before ordering, search for the exact model-compatible filter and confirm that the seller is the manufacturer or an authorized retailer. Generic filters are not automatically interchangeable: dimensions, seals, carbon quantity, filter media, and sensor calibration can differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Vacuum or wash only the component the manual identifies as washable. Do not wash a HEPA or carbon filter unless the manufacturer specifically permits it. Replace filters when the indicator calls for it, airflow falls noticeably, the filter is visibly loaded, or the room has experienced unusually heavy smoke or construction dust. A filter indicator is a useful reminder, not a laboratory measurement of remaining performance.

When a portable purifier is not enough

A portable purifier is designed to reduce airborne particles in one room. It is not a substitute for ventilation, source control, mold remediation, smoke-damage cleanup, or professional help with a gas or combustion problem. It also does not provide medical treatment.

For renovation or construction dust, control dust at the source with appropriate containment, extraction, cleanup, and personal protective equipment. A purifier can help with residual airborne particles after the work area is controlled, but it should not be used as the only safety measure during sanding, cutting, demolition, or work involving hazardous materials.

For a multi-room home, consider placing appropriately sized units in the rooms that matter most, keeping doors open only when that arrangement makes sense, or evaluating whole-home HVAC filtration with a qualified HVAC professional. Verify that any replacement HVAC filter fits the system and does not restrict airflow beyond what the equipment can handle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to buy one online without choosing by the box headline

  1. Measure the room. Multiply length by width, and account for unusually high ceilings or connected spaces.
  2. Find the comparable ACH rating. Prefer a 4.8-ACH room-size figure when available for a normally occupied room.
  3. Compare smoke CADR. Use dust and pollen CADR as supporting figures, but do not mix unlike measurements.
  4. Check the filtration approach. Identify the prefilter, fine-particle filter, carbon stage, and any ionization or plasma feature.
  5. Budget for filters. Confirm the exact replacement part, expected interval, seller, and current availability.
  6. Check noise and controls. Listed decibel ranges and power ratings are useful, but actual sound depends on fan speed and room acoustics.
  7. Verify the listing. Model names, CADR figures, room ratings, packaging, prices, and stock can change. Check the manufacturer’s page and a live retailer listing before purchase.

Independent testing can add useful context, but results should be attributed carefully. RTINGS reports testing the Blueair 211i Max using its own methodology; that does not mean every model in this guide was tested by RTINGS or under identical conditions. Comparative results from another outlet, such as TechRadar, should likewise be treated as that outlet’s test context rather than a universal ranking.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best air purifier for a bedroom or home office?

For most medium rooms, the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH is the best all-round choice because it combines a 233-CFM smoke CADR, a 361-square-foot 4.8-ACH rating, automatic control, and simple operation. The Levoit Core 400S-P is a better fit if app scheduling and voice control matter more.

Is CADR more important than the advertised square-foot coverage?

CADR is usually more useful for comparing particle-cleaning throughput, while coverage is meaningful only when you also know the air-change assumption. A 1,200-square-foot rating at one ACH is not equivalent to a 361-square-foot rating at 4.8 ACH.

Can one portable air purifier clean an entire house?

Usually not. A portable purifier is designed primarily for one room. A larger home may need multiple units or a properly designed HVAC filtration solution. One purifier may reduce particles in nearby spaces, but it should not be treated as a whole-home system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do air purifiers remove odors and VOCs?

Activated carbon can help with some odors, but a small carbon layer is not a guarantee of complete VOC or gas removal. Persistent odors should be addressed at the source, especially when they may involve damp materials, combustion, leaks, or construction products.

Should I avoid an air purifier with ionization or PlasmaWave?

Check the exact model’s current documentation and emissions certification. EPA guidance recommends avoiding air cleaners that intentionally generate ozone. This is especially relevant when a purifier uses ionization, plasma, electrostatic, or similar electronic features.

How often do air-purifier filters need to be replaced?

It depends on use and pollution. Coway lists one year for the AP-1512HH HEPA filter and six months for its deodorization filter; Blueair says the 211i Max filter can last up to nine months. These are estimates, so use the indicator, inspect airflow, and follow the model’s instructions.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Choose the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH for most medium bedrooms, offices, and living rooms; the Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max for a genuinely large room or open plan; the Levoit Core 400S-P for app and voice control; the Winix 5500-2 for a washable prefilter and dedicated carbon stage; and the Shark HP202 only when its one-ACH large-space claim and low-maintenance positioning match your priorities.
