Temporary signs vs. online updates: what helps customers reach a business during roadwork?

Some links on this page are affiliate links: if you buy through them we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you.

Use both. Temporary roadside signs reach people who are already approaching the works, warning them about restrictions, delays, closures and diversions. Your website, social channels and business listing can explain what the signs cannot: whether you are open, which entrance remains usable, what hours apply and how customers should approach. Neither channel replaces the other. The reliable approach is one access message, repeated consistently on official signs, your property, your website, social posts and your business profile.

Why signs and online updates solve different parts of the problem

Roadwork creates two separate questions for a customer: “Can I get through this area?” and “If I can, is the business open and where do I enter?” Road-authority signs are designed for the first question. Business-controlled communications are better suited to the second.

Channel Primary audience Best information to provide When it works
Official roadwork signs Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians approaching or already near the works Restrictions, closures, diversion routes, expected delays and temporary access arrangements At the point where a person must decide whether to continue, turn around or follow another route
Signs on or immediately beside the business People looking for the entrance after reaching the site Open entrance, pedestrian route, loading or parking changes and a clear direction to the premises At the final approach and decision points on the business property, where local rules permit
Website and social channels Customers planning a visit or checking before leaving Opening status, temporary hours, practical directions, accessible entrances and contact details Before and during the disruption, with revisions whenever the access plan changes
Business listing People searching for the business or requesting directions Accurate hours, special hours, location information and a short access notice When a customer uses search or map results to decide whether and how to travel

The UK Department for Transport’s guidance on signs for road works and temporary situations describes signs that identify works, restrictions, diversions and temporary access arrangements. It explains that warnings about delays or closures help road users allow more time, choose another route or make other arrangements. That guidance applies to England, Scotland and Wales. It does not turn an official traffic sign into a substitute for a business explaining its own operating status.

Business Queensland reaches the complementary conclusion for affected businesses: “Keep your customers informed about any changes, like new operating hours or alternative access arrangements.” Its guidance recommends using a website and social media and keeping a Google Business Profile current. Google’s guidance likewise allows businesses to set special hours for temporary closures or other events and stresses accurate business information. Those tools tell a customer whether the destination is worth reaching; they do not direct traffic through a live closure.

What official roadside signs can and cannot do

They warn people before the access decision

Road-authority or contractor signs are placed for road users who may not know that works are ahead. Depending on the scheme, they can identify where current or future works are located, warn about an expected delay, show a restriction or closure, and direct traffic along a diversion. This is the information a customer needs while driving or walking toward the work zone, when reading a long online explanation is impractical.

They reflect the traffic-control plan

Because official signs are part of the traffic-management arrangement, a business should not contradict them. If a sign says an approach is closed, a business notice must not imply that customers can drive through the closure. Ask the responsible road authority or project contractor which approach is expected to remain available and whether the project team will provide a business-access sign.

They may not answer the business question

A diversion can move traffic away from the normal frontage without stating whether a shop, office, yard or service entrance remains open. Official signs also may not show temporary parking, a rear entrance, a pedestrian route or a change to opening hours. Those details belong in the business’s own communication and, where permitted, on clear signage at the property.

What online updates should tell customers

Start with operating status

Put the answer at the top: “Open as usual,” “Open with access from [named approach],” “Trading reduced hours,” or “Temporarily closed.” Add the effective date or period when it is known. Do not describe a business as fully accessible if only a particular entrance, vehicle type or time window is available.

Describe the usable approach

Name the road or side of the site that remains usable, the entrance customers should look for, and any practical change such as a rear gate, pedestrian-only access or parking elsewhere. Explain the last safe decision point rather than relying on a vague instruction such as “follow the diversion.” Customers need to know which official route to follow and what to do after they leave it.

Keep hours and listing information synchronized

Update the website, social posts and business listing from the same approved wording. Google Business Profile supports special hours for temporary closures and other events; use that feature when hours differ from the normal schedule. Check the displayed address, phone number and map pin as well. A current listing that still shows normal hours can send a customer to a closed door even when your website is accurate.

Make the message easy to scan on a phone

Use a short heading, the current status, the recommended approach and the date checked. Put longer background about the project below the practical instructions. Include a phone number or other contact route for customers who need an accessible entrance or have a delivery that cannot use the diversion.

Build one approved access message before publishing anything

Inconsistent wording is often more damaging than a missing post. Nominate one person to confirm facts with the road authority or contractor and maintain a single access note. Every channel can then carry the same core information while adapting its length to the format.

Confirm the facts with the project team

  • Which roads, lanes, pavements or entrances are closed, and from what date?
  • Which approach is expected to remain open for cars, deliveries, cyclists and pedestrians?
  • Are there weight, width, height or time restrictions?
  • Has parking moved, and is a temporary pedestrian route provided?
  • How long is the arrangement expected to last, and what event could change it?
  • Will the contractor or road authority install a sign identifying access to the business?

Business Queensland advises checking that signage supplied by a project team or contractor meets the needs of the business and its customers. Colorado’s Department of Transportation similarly advises that signage around a business be clear so customers know how to access it. Treat those checks as a conversation with the project team, not as permission to alter public traffic controls.

Write the three-sentence version

  1. Status: say whether the business is open and identify any changed hours.
  2. Approach: name the usable road, entrance or pedestrian route.
  3. Action: tell the customer what to do at the diversion or final turn, and provide a contact route for questions.

Example: “We are open Monday to Saturday. Approach from North Street; the usual east entrance is closed, so use the west gate and follow the temporary pedestrian signs. Call the reception desk if you need step-free access.” Replace the example directions with verified details from the project team.

A practical implementation sequence

  1. Map the customer journey. Mark the points where a person first sees the works, must choose a diversion, reaches the property and looks for the entrance.
  2. Get the latest traffic plan. Ask the road authority or contractor for closure dates, diversion routes, restrictions and the expected business-access arrangement.
  3. Decide the operating status. Confirm normal or temporary hours, delivery arrangements, appointment changes and any entrance that cannot be used.
  4. Create the approved access note. Record the status, usable approach, entrance, parking or pedestrian instruction, effective date and a contact number.
  5. Request project signage. Ask whether official or contractor-supplied signs can identify the business access. Check the proposed wording and placement against actual customer needs.
  6. Update the website. Place the notice where customers will see it before opening hours information or directions. Include a date for the next review.
  7. Update social channels. Publish the same status and route in a concise post. Pin or highlight it if the platform allows, and edit it rather than leaving an obsolete instruction visible.
  8. Update the business listing. Set special hours when needed and verify the address, phone number and map details. Add a short access note if the listing supports one.
  9. Install property signage where allowed. A temporary direction sign or A-frame on your own property can help at the final turn, but check local placement, accessibility and landlord permissions first. Do not place a sign in the public highway or alter an official sign without authorization.
  10. Check the route in person. Walk or drive the approach at the time customers will arrive. Confirm that the entrance is visible, the sign is not blocked and the instruction still matches the traffic controls.
  11. Set a review trigger. Recheck after every change to closure dates, diversion stages, opening hours or weather-related access. Assign a person to remove or replace outdated notices.

How to design effective temporary business signs

Use the sign for the last decision

A property sign should answer one immediate question: “Where do I go now?” Use a short direction such as “Business open — entrance via West Gate” and an arrow that points to a visible route. If the sign is intended for pedestrians, say so; a vehicle arrow and a footpath arrow may need different placements.

Keep it legible and consistent

  • Use large, high-contrast lettering that can be read from the approach distance.
  • Repeat the business name or a recognizable identifier so a diverted customer knows the sign is for the intended destination.
  • Use the same entrance names and road names as the website and listing.
  • Include changed hours only when they are current; remove the notice when the hours return to normal.
  • Keep signs out of sightlines, walking clearances and accessible routes.

Respect permissions and traffic controls

Local rules determine whether a sign can be placed on a pavement, verge, parking area or leased frontage. A sign on the business’s own property is a possible implementation of clear access guidance, not a universal right to use public space. Obtain any required permission, coordinate with the contractor and ensure the sign cannot be mistaken for an official traffic instruction.

When and how often to update customers

Publish before the first disruption

Post as soon as the access arrangement and business status are confirmed. The precise notice period varies by project and authority. Cheshire East Council says it normally notifies affected residents and businesses seven to 10 days before work, but describes that as local practice that changes by job. Do not treat seven to 10 days as a general legal requirement or a promise that every project will provide that much warning.

Update at each change of stage

Road schemes can move from one lane closure to a full closure, or from vehicle access to pedestrian-only access. Replace the message when the route, entrance, hours or diversion changes. Keep the effective date visible so a customer can distinguish a current instruction from an old post.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove expired instructions

An old “access via the rear gate” notice can be as misleading as no notice if the rear gate is later closed. Archive or edit social posts where practical, remove temporary signs that no longer apply and restore normal hours in the business listing when appropriate.

Channel-specific message examples

Website banner

“Open during the High Street works. From 14 October, use the North Street entrance; vehicle access from Market Road is closed. Opening hours are 8am–6pm Monday to Friday and 9am–1pm Saturday. Check this notice before travelling.”

Social post

“We are open. Follow the signed diversion from North Street and use the west gate; the usual east entrance is closed. Saturday hours are temporarily 9am–1pm. We will update this post if access changes.”

Business-listing update

“Open with access via North Street and the west gate while roadworks continue. Temporary hours: Monday–Friday 8am–6pm, Saturday 9am–1pm.” Set the corresponding special hours in the listing’s hours controls.

What to do when information conflicts

Official sign versus business post

Follow the official traffic control. Stop the business post from directing customers through a closure, contact the road authority or contractor for clarification and publish a corrected instruction. Do not ask customers to ignore a restriction because the business is open.

Website versus business listing

Use the most recently verified operating decision, then update both channels immediately. If the listing cannot display the full route, keep the short status there and direct customers to the website or phone number for detailed access instructions.

Two entrances with different restrictions

Label each entrance by audience: customer vehicles, deliveries, pedestrians or accessible access. A single arrow without that distinction can send the wrong user to a locked gate.

Measure communication quality without inventing a success rate

Official sources reviewed for this topic do not provide a published statistic comparing temporary signs with online updates, and they do not establish a percentage increase in visits, sales or customer reachability from either channel. Treat the channels as complementary rather than claiming that one universally performs better.

You can still monitor operational signals:

  • Count calls and messages asking where to enter or whether you are open.
  • Record missed deliveries, customers arriving at a closed entrance and requests for accessible access.
  • Ask staff whether customers are following the intended approach.
  • Check that the listing shows the intended hours and that the website notice remains current.
  • Log each change supplied by the road authority and the time your channels were updated.

These checks identify confusion and stale information; they are internal indicators, not a controlled study of channel effectiveness.

Common mistakes and their fixes

“We are open” with no route

Problem: Customers know the status but not how to reach the door. Fix: Name the usable approach, entrance and final turn.

A route described only by a project name

Problem: Customers cannot translate “Phase 2 diversion” into a driving decision. Fix: Use road names, entrance names and a simple action at the decision point.

Normal hours left in the listing

Problem: Search and map users see information that no longer applies. Fix: Set special hours and synchronize the website and social channels.

One update for the whole project

Problem: A staged scheme changes the usable route. Fix: Date each instruction and replace it whenever the stage changes.

Leaving old posts and signs in place

Geography, authority and platform limits

The Department for Transport sign guidance cited here covers England, Scotland and Wales. Business Queensland and Colorado’s Department of Transportation provide state-level guidance from Australia and the United States; their practical recommendations are useful examples, not universal local law. Cheshire East Council’s seven-to-10-day notification practice is specific to that authority and varies by project. Google Business Profile features and labels are platform-specific and may change.

Before publishing a route or installing a temporary sign, confirm the current closure, diversion, permitted placement and business access with the responsible local road authority and project team. Local highway, accessibility, landlord and planning requirements may affect where a private sign can stand and what it may say.

A final pre-publication checklist

  • The business status is explicit: open, limited hours or closed.
  • The usable approach and entrance are named in plain language.
  • Vehicle, pedestrian, delivery and accessible routes are distinguished where they differ.
  • Website, social channels and business listing show the same hours and route.
  • Special hours are set for temporary changes.
  • Official signs and the business message do not conflict.
  • Any property sign is permitted, visible, accessible and clearly a business direction.
  • The notice has an effective date and an owner responsible for updates.
  • Expired signs and posts have been removed or corrected.
  • The route has been checked in person after each major change.
