Both support Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and DTS Virtual:X, but their most important difference is physical surround coverage: the Q75H is a 5.1.2 system with virtualized rear effects, while the Q85H is a 7.1.4 system with separate wireless rear speakers.
That makes the Q75H the simpler, easier-to-install option. The Q85H is the better choice for buyers who want sound physically coming from behind them and have the space and power outlets to install rear speakers.

What the channel numbers mean
In a soundbar designation such as 5.1.2, the first number represents the main speaker channels, the second represents the subwoofer channel, and the final number represents height channels.
#1 Best Overall

- Smart Sound That Adapts to Where You Sit: Not sitting in the center? No problem. AI Sonic optimization tunes the sound to your room and seating position, so you always get balanced, immersive audio. Easy one-time setup through the TCL app
The Q75H therefore has five main channels, one subwoofer and two upward-firing height channels in the soundbar. The Q85H has seven main channels, one subwoofer and four height channels, with the additional upward-firing drivers located in its rear speakers. TCL explains the layouts on its Q75H and Q85H product pages.
TCL Q75H: the simpler Atmos package
The Q75H combines a soundbar with a wireless subwoofer. Its upward-firing drivers are designed to reflect sound from the ceiling for an Atmos height effect, while side-firing elements, Ray-Danz acoustic reflectors and processing are intended to widen the soundstage and create surround effects.
It does not include separate rear satellites. TCL’s support material describes virtual rear speakers for this model, so it should not be expected to deliver the same physically positioned behind-you effects as the Q85H.

- New Replacement Remote Control Applicable for TCL Sound Bar Q75H Q85H S55H S45H
- No programming is required. Just install new batteries and it is ready for use.
- Power Supply: 2X 1.5V AAA Alkaline Battery. Batteries are not included.
The Q75H is a sensible fit for a small or moderately sized room, apartment, or living room where rear-speaker placement and extra power cables would be inconvenient. It is also the lower-cost choice when the priority is improving television, streaming and movie sound without building a more involved theater system.
TCL Q85H: physical rear surround
The Q85H adds wireless rear speakers to the soundbar and subwoofer. Those speakers include upward-firing drivers, giving the system its 7.1.4 layout and adding both rear-channel coverage and additional height channels.
“Wireless” refers to the audio signal connection—not battery operation. Each rear speaker still needs access to mains power. You will need to plan space behind or beside the seating position, power outlets and speaker placement that keeps the satellites clear of furniture.

- 5.1.2 Channel Q Class Sound bar - Fill your room with sound, bringing the movie theater experience into your home with just a single HDMI cable. It’s home theater, made simple.
- Dolby Atmos and DTS:X - Spatial sound from above and behind putting you in the center of movies, music, and games.
- Up to 620 Watts Total Power - Room-filling audio sound will immerse you in your favorite movies, TV shows, and music, delivering powerful audio experience.
- Bluetooth Wireless Music Streaming - Stream your favorite music wirelessly with Bluetooth connectivity that allows you to play your favorite songs from your smartphone, tablet, or other Bluetooth-enabled device.
- Ray Danz Technology with Acoustic Reflectors - Patented technology that dramatically widens the sound stage for an amazing acoustic experience
When installed properly, the Q85H is the more appropriate option for viewers who value discrete rear effects in movies and games. Its extra speakers do not guarantee better sound in every room, however: poor placement, a very open floor plan or a large price difference can reduce the practical advantage.
Dolby Atmos and DTS support: what you actually need
Both systems support Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and DTS Virtual:X. Atmos and DTS:X are object-based surround formats; DTS Virtual:X is a processing mode intended to create a broader or more elevated presentation.
The logos alone do not mean every program will play in native Atmos or DTS:X. The source must contain the format, and the television, streaming device, disc player, app, cable box and HDMI settings must pass it through correctly. Stereo programming and ordinary compressed broadcasts may be processed into a surround mode, but that is not the same as receiving a native Atmos soundtrack.

For the most capable connection, use the TV’s HDMI eARC port and enable the appropriate eARC, HDMI-CEC and bitstream or passthrough settings. Exact menu names vary by television model and firmware. If a source device cannot pass the desired format through the TV, connect it to the soundbar’s HDMI input where appropriate.
If Atmos does not sound overhead
- Connect the soundbar to the television’s HDMI eARC port.
- Enable eARC, HDMI-CEC and bitstream or passthrough audio on the TV.
- Confirm that the title or player is reporting Atmos or DTS:X.
- Test with a known Atmos source rather than ordinary stereo content.
- Run TCL AI Sonic room calibration.
- Check the selected sound mode and the positions of the soundbar and speakers.
- If the format indicator still does not appear, test the source directly through the soundbar’s HDMI input.
Upward-firing effects depend on the room. Ceiling height, ceiling shape, reflective surfaces, open-plan layouts and the listening position all affect how convincingly reflected height sound reaches the seating area.

Pricing and availability
TCL originally listed the Q75H at $799.99 and the Q85H at $899.99. On TCL’s U.S. store pages, checked Aug. 18, 2026, the Q75H was listed at $499.99 and the Q85H at $649.99, each shown against a higher reference price.
Those are U.S. TCL store prices observed on that date, not guaranteed permanent prices or universal retailer pricing. Promotions and regional availability can change. TCL’s official soundbar lineup is the appropriate place to check current models and availability.
Installation checklist
- Measure the TV stand: both soundbars are listed at 41.5 inches long.
- Check whether the bar could block the TV’s infrared sensor or lower portion of the screen.
- Confirm the television has HDMI eARC if high-bandwidth audio passthrough is important.
- Reserve an outlet for the subwoofer.
- For the Q85H, reserve outlets and suitable positions for both rear speakers.
- Place the soundbar centrally below the screen and avoid obstructing its upward-firing drivers.
- Run TCL AI Sonic calibration after the speakers are positioned.
The Q75H soundbar is listed at 41.50 × 4.86 × 2.68 inches and 11.88 pounds. Its subwoofer is listed at 8.66 × 14.51 × 10.67 inches and 13.42 pounds. The Q85H soundbar is also listed as 41.5 inches long; its rear speakers add the main installation requirement.

Which TCL soundbar should you buy?
Choose the Q75H if:
- You want Atmos and a subwoofer without separate rear speakers.
- Your room is small or moderately sized.
- Rear power outlets or speaker placement are inconvenient.
- You primarily watch television, streaming movies and general content.
- The lower observed price is more important than maximum surround immersion.
Choose the Q85H if:
- Physical rear-channel effects matter to you.
- You can place the rear speakers properly and power them.
- You watch Atmos movies or play games with surround sound.
- The price premium is acceptable.
- You want a fuller theater layout without buying an AV receiver and separate speaker package.
Consider another category if:
- You want upgradeable, separately replaceable components.
- You need multiple HDMI inputs, advanced video switching or broad format passthrough.
- Your room’s ceiling geometry is unsuitable for reflected upward-firing Atmos.
- You prioritize audiophile music performance, multiroom reliability or independently measured dialogue performance.
Important caveats
TCL advertises up to 620 watts for the Q75H. The Q85H page is internally inconsistent: one marketing section cites 620 watts, while its detailed specification table lists up to 860 watts. Treat these as manufacturer-rated maximum figures, not directly comparable measurements of loudness, clean output, bass or sound quality.
The supplied product information does not establish independent frequency-response, maximum-SPL, distortion or listening results. Channel count and wattage alone cannot guarantee superior performance. The practical dividing line remains straightforward: the Q75H is the easier virtual-surround package, while the Q85H is the choice for buyers who specifically want physical rear speakers.
