Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Short answer: Synthetic hydraulic fluid is worth the premium when an excavator, loader, skid steer, backhoe, or other machine works through severe heat or cold, large temperature swings, long service objectives, or environmentally sensitive sites. A conventional mineral fluid is usually the better-value choice when it meets the equipment manufacturer’s exact performance specification and ISO viscosity grade, temperatures are moderate, contamination is controlled, and the machine does not need synthetic oil’s wider operating margin. The label alone does not decide the purchase: the OEM specification, viscosity, additive chemistry, compatibility, and maintenance policy do.
What synthetic and conventional hydraulic fluids actually are
Hydraulic oil transfers power, lubricates pumps and motors, carries heat to the reservoir or cooler, protects steel surfaces from rust, and transports contaminants to the filter. Both synthetic and conventional products can perform those jobs when they are correctly formulated and matched to the machine.

Synthetic hydraulic fluid
Synthetic hydraulic oils use engineered base stocks and additive systems designed for predictable behavior over a broad temperature range. Formulators can target a higher viscosity index, better low-temperature pumpability, stronger oxidation resistance, and longer resistance to thermal breakdown. Those characteristics can improve cold starts, response consistency, cleanliness, and oil life in demanding service. Synthetic does not automatically mean biodegradable, fire resistant, or compatible with every seal; those are separate properties that must be stated on the product data sheet.

Conventional mineral hydraulic fluid
Conventional fluids use refined mineral base oils with an additive package selected for hydraulic wear, corrosion, foam, oxidation, and cleanliness control. A well-formulated conventional oil that carries the required OEM approval can protect a machine very effectively in a moderate duty cycle. Chevron’s hydraulic-fluid guidance cautions that conventional products may have a shorter life in demanding service, but that is a service-condition distinction, not a claim that every synthetic lasts longer in every machine.

The specifications that matter more than the label
Before comparing brands or prices, record the requirements in the operator’s manual, service manual, and approved-lubricant list. Manufacturers normally specify technical characteristics or performance specifications rather than simply asking for synthetic or conventional oil.
| Check | Why it matters | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| OEM performance specification or approval | Confirms the antiwear, oxidation, corrosion, foam, cleanliness, and seal requirements for the hydraulic system. | Exact wording in the manual and the product’s current technical data sheet or approval list. |
| ISO viscosity grade | Controls film thickness, pump efficiency, leakage, heat generation, and start-up behavior. | ISO VG 32, 46, 68, or another grade specified for the machine and ambient temperatures. |
| Viscosity index and temperature range | Determines how much viscosity changes between a cold start and hot operation. | Published VI, pour point, operating range, and any cold-start limits. |
| Antiwear and cleanliness performance | Protects pumps, valves, cylinders, and servo components while limiting deposits and varnish. | Required antiwear category, filterability, water separation, and cleanliness targets. |
| Compatibility | Different additive chemistries, seals, hoses, paints, filters, and residual oils can interact. | Seal material, filter recommendation, allowable top-up fluid, and conversion procedure. |
| Drain policy | Oil life depends on temperature, contamination, water, aeration, and sampling—not base stock alone. | OEM interval, condition-monitoring policy, and whether extended drains require approval. |
| Environmental status | A spill-sensitive site may require a readily biodegradable or environmentally acceptable hydraulic ester. | ISO 15380 category, biodegradability test, renewable content, and site permit requirements. |
| Total operating cost | The cheapest pail can cost more if it causes frequent drains, downtime, or component wear. | Fluid price, capacity, filters, labor, disposal, sampling, downtime, and expected service life. |
ISO VG 32, 46, and 68: choosing viscosity correctly
ISO VG numbers describe the fluid’s nominal kinematic viscosity at 40 °C. They are not quality ratings and do not tell you whether a product is synthetic, biodegradable, or high in antiwear performance. ISO VG 32 is thinner than ISO VG 46, and ISO VG 46 is thinner than ISO VG 68.
| Grade | Typical selection logic | Risk of choosing it incorrectly |
|---|---|---|
| ISO VG 32 | Often considered for colder ambient conditions or systems designed for lower viscosity, subject to the OEM manual. | Too thin at operating temperature can increase leakage, wear, and pump noise; too thick for a cold start can starve the pump. |
| ISO VG 46 | A common middle grade for mobile construction equipment when the manufacturer permits it. | It can still be wrong if the pump, clearances, climate, or specified multi-grade requirement calls for another grade. |
| ISO VG 68 | Often selected for hotter conditions, heavier loads, or slower-moving equipment when the OEM allows the higher viscosity. | Excessive cold viscosity can delay lubrication, increase start-up torque, and trigger cavitation or relief-valve issues. |
Chevron notes that heavy loads and slow-moving equipment generally call for higher viscosity, while a higher viscosity index helps oil retain a more useful viscosity as temperature fluctuates. A high-VI synthetic can therefore be valuable when a machine starts cold and later runs hot, but the manufacturer’s permitted grade remains controlling. Never substitute VG 46 for VG 32 or VG 68 merely because all three are sold as hydraulic oil.
When synthetic fluid is most likely to pay back
Severe heat and oxidation stress
High reservoir temperatures accelerate oxidation, varnish formation, sludge, seal hardening, and additive depletion. Synthetic formulations are generally more resistant to oxidation and thermal breakdown, so they may preserve viscosity and cleanliness longer. Confirm temperatures with a gauge or data logger; do not assume that a hot day is the only source of heat. Restricted coolers, plugged filters, excessive relief-valve operation, and an undersized reservoir can create damaging heat regardless of fluid type.
Cold starts and wide seasonal swings
Cold oil resists flow. A fluid with better low-temperature pumpability and a higher VI can reduce cranking load and help the pump receive oil sooner, while still maintaining film thickness after the system reaches operating temperature. This is especially relevant to equipment parked outdoors, machines moved between climate zones, and fleets that work through winter and summer without changing grades. The product still has to meet the OEM’s viscosity and cold-start limits.

Long operating windows or difficult drain access
Synthetic oil can be attractive when a machine runs long shifts, operates far from a service yard, or loses substantial production during a drain. Longer potential oil life is not permission to extend the interval automatically. Use the manual’s interval unless the manufacturer approves condition-based extension, and verify oil condition with samples for viscosity, oxidation, particle count, water, and wear metals.
High hydraulic utilization
Continuous excavator cycles, high-flow attachments, heavy loader work, and frequent relief-valve events produce more heat and shear than intermittent light work. In these conditions, a premium fluid’s oxidation stability and viscosity control can be worth more than its higher purchase price. A field result cited by Chevron Lubricants Canada for Clarity Synthetic Hydraulic Oil AW reported 4.5% greater fuel economy, a 6.5% productivity increase, and more than two times the oil life versus a traditional monograde fluid. Those figures came from a specific application and are not a universal guarantee; your machine, attachment, operator, temperature, and maintenance practices may produce different results.

When conventional mineral oil is the sensible choice
Conventional oil is a defensible choice when all of the following are true:
- The product meets the exact OEM performance specification and viscosity requirement.
- The machine operates in a moderate, known temperature range.
- Filters, breathers, reservoirs, and cooler cores are maintained so contamination and heat stay controlled.
- The fleet can follow the prescribed drain interval and collect samples when needed.
- The price difference would not be recovered through longer oil life, reduced downtime, lower fuel use, or improved cold-weather operation.
Do not downgrade to a cheaper conventional fluid if the manual calls for a specific high-VI, multi-grade, biodegradable, or other approved formulation. Conversely, do not pay for synthetic simply to compensate for a blocked cooler, dirty breather, water ingress, or incorrect viscosity; those faults must be repaired.
Biodegradable and environmentally acceptable hydraulic options
Forestry, marine, wetland, agricultural, mining, and other spill-sensitive work may require an environmentally acceptable hydraulic fluid. Select the environmental category only after confirming that the machine’s seals, hoses, paints, filters, and warranty requirements allow it.

- Identify the machine and hydraulic circuit. Record make, model, serial-number range, pump type, attachment flow, reservoir capacity, and whether the system is shared with another function.
- Read the current manual. Capture the required performance specification, ISO grade, acceptable alternatives, temperature chart, cleanliness target, filter part number, and drain interval. A decal on the tank may be outdated or incomplete.
- Check the operating envelope. List the lowest start-up temperature, normal reservoir temperature, peak temperature, daily hours, load pattern, altitude, and exposure to water or dust.
- Shortlist products that meet the specification. Compare synthetic and conventional candidates only after eliminating products without the required approval, viscosity, or environmental category.
- Verify compatibility. Ask the equipment manufacturer or lubricant supplier about seals, hoses, residual oil, filters, paints, and any required flush. Obtain written guidance for unusual conversions.
- Set a maintenance baseline. Before filling, inspect the tank, clean the breather, replace the filter if due, repair leaks, and record the oil brand, grade, batch, hours, and fill quantity.
- Monitor after the change. Check start-up noise, response time, operating temperature, filter differential pressure, leaks, foam, and sample results. Investigate changes instead of assuming the new fluid is at fault.
Mixing synthetic and conventional hydraulic oil
Do not assume that two products are compatible because both say AW, antiwear, or hydraulic fluid on the container. Compatibility depends on base oil, additive chemistry, viscosity, seal materials, filterability, and the amount of old oil left in the circuit. The available guidance does not establish a universal synthetic-to-conventional mixing rule or a universal flush interval.
If you need an emergency top-up
Use the manual’s approved emergency fluid if one is listed. If none is listed, contact the equipment manufacturer or lubricant supplier before adding an unfamiliar product. Record the amount and product used, restore the correct fluid as soon as practical, and sample or drain the system according to the resulting guidance. A small top-up does not prove that a full conversion is safe.
For a planned conversion
- Obtain written confirmation that the new fluid meets the OEM requirement and is compatible with the existing seals and residual oil.
- Drain the reservoir and accessible lines at the temperature and position specified by the manufacturer.
- Replace filters, clean strainers, and remove sludge or water rather than trapping it in the new fill.
- Flush only with a product and quantity approved for that system; some machines require a defined circulation procedure.
- Fill to the correct level, bleed air as directed, and inspect for leaks and foaming.
- Label the machine with the fluid and grade, then shorten the first sampling interval so contamination or incompatibility is detected early.
Oil life, filtration, and cleanliness
Oil life is a system outcome. Heat, oxygen, water, abrasive dust, ingested air, incompatible top-ups, and high particle loading can destroy either fluid. Synthetic oil may resist oxidation longer, but it cannot rescue a leaking cylinder rod, a saturated filter, a blocked cooler, or a reservoir breather that admits dust and moisture.
Maintenance controls that protect either fluid
- Use clean, sealed transfer equipment and keep containers closed.
- Replace filters at the OEM interval or when a validated differential-pressure indicator requires it.
- Inspect breathers, suction strainers, hoses, fittings, and cylinder rods for paths that admit dirt or water.
- Keep the reservoir at the specified level; low level encourages aeration and heat, while overfilling can cause foaming and leakage.
- Trend particle count, water, viscosity, oxidation, and wear metals through a consistent laboratory or field-sampling program.
- Investigate rising temperature, sluggish response, pump whine, foaming, dark varnish, or repeated filter plugging before changing fluid type.
Follow the equipment manual for cleanliness targets, sampling points, filter changes, and drain intervals. No universal extended-drain period is established for all synthetic hydraulic oils.

Calculating total cost per operating hour
Compare fluids using the cost of running the machine, not just the price of a pail. A practical calculation is:
Cost per operating hour = (fluid purchase cost + filters + labor + sampling + disposal + planned downtime) ÷ expected service hours
Use documented hours from your own fleet where possible. For a synthetic option, include the premium purchase price but also model credible savings from fewer drains, less downtime, lower cold-start load, lower operating temperature, or longer filter life. For a conventional option, include the actual drain frequency and labor rather than assuming that the lowest price per litre is the lowest hourly cost. Because no independent universal cost-per-hour figure or guaranteed drain interval has been established, a fleet-specific calculation is more reliable than a generic payback claim.
Practical choices by equipment and duty cycle
Excavator with high-flow attachments
Start with the manufacturer’s specified grade and approval. Continuous breaker, mulcher, or auxiliary-flow work can create substantial heat, making high oxidation stability and careful cooler maintenance important. Synthetic may earn its premium if sampling shows rapid oxidation or the machine loses production during frequent drains.

Wheel loader in normal earthmoving
If ambient temperatures are moderate, duty cycles are predictable, and the manual permits a conventional antiwear fluid, a quality mineral product can be economical. Choose a higher-VI synthetic when the loader faces very cold starts, very hot reservoirs, or large seasonal swings.

Skid steer with frequent short cycles
Short cycles can mean many starts, rapid temperature changes, and attachment-induced heat. Verify the cold-start grade and monitor filter restriction and hydraulic temperature. Do not select a thicker grade to quiet a noisy system without diagnosing suction restriction, aeration, or wear.
Backhoe or seasonal rental machine
Known storage conditions and moderate utilization may favor a compliant conventional fluid, provided the rental or fleet policy allows it. If machines move between regions or sit through freezing weather, a high-VI product can simplify seasonal operation, but only within the approved viscosity range.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Choosing by ISO number alone
ISO VG 46 says nothing about antiwear quality, OEM approval, biodegradability, or compatibility. Correct the mistake by checking the complete specification and additive requirements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAssuming synthetic always lasts twice as long
The Chevron field result exceeded two times the oil life in a particular comparison, but it is not a guarantee. Establish any extension with OEM approval and oil analysis.
Using a higher grade to compensate for wear
Thicker oil can increase start-up load and reduce flow through clearances designed for a different grade. Repair the underlying pump, valve, cooler, or temperature problem.
Changing fluid without cleaning the system
Residual sludge, water, and incompatible additives can shorten the new oil’s life. Follow the documented drain, flush, filter, and sampling procedure for the machine.
Ignoring environmental paperwork
A product described as biodegradable may still fail a site’s permit, spill-response, or ecolabel requirement. Confirm the specified test method and formulation, such as the PETRONAS data sheet’s OECD 301B result and EU-Ecolabel renewable-content statement, before mobilizing equipment.
Bottom-line decision rule
Choose synthetic hydraulic fluid when the machine’s approved product list allows it and the operating conditions create a measurable need for better cold flow, high-temperature stability, wide-temperature viscosity control, longer service objectives, or environmental performance. Choose conventional mineral fluid when it meets the same OEM requirements and your duty cycle, climate, contamination control, and service schedule do not justify the premium. In both cases, the right ISO grade, clean system, compatible additives, and disciplined sampling matter more than the word synthetic on the label.
