Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteVerdict: The SwitchBot S10 is one of the most forward-looking floor-cleaning robots available because it separates the charging and dust-collection dock from a water station that can connect to household plumbing. When installed correctly, it can refill clean water, drain dirty water, wash its roller mop and resume cleaning with far less owner involvement than a conventional vacuum-and-mop robot.
That convenience has a major condition: the home needs a suitable water supply, drain, floor layout and budget. The S10 is most compelling in a hard-floor home where frequent mopping matters. It is a much weaker proposition for renters, mostly carpeted homes or anyone who wants a simple plug-in setup.
What makes the SwitchBot S10 different?
Most robot vacuums fall into one of three categories:
- A vacuum robot with a self-emptying dust dock.
- A hybrid robot that vacuums and mops but relies on manually filled clean-water and dirty-water tanks.
- A premium hybrid robot with a large dock that washes the mop and stores water in tanks the owner still has to service.
The S10 takes a different approach. Its charging and dust-collection station is separate from a compact water station. The water station can be connected to household plumbing so the robot has an automatic source of clean water and a route for dirty water to leave the system. SwitchBot describes this as a dual-station design; the “world-first” wording is a company claim, not an independently established industry fact. SwitchBot’s product page documents the robot’s architecture and advertised features.

This is why the S10 is more interesting as an infrastructure product than as a raw suction-number product. It is trying to make a robot cleaner behave more like a permanently installed appliance.
How the S10’s water system works
During a mopping cycle, the robot can use the water station to maintain its roller mop instead of carrying the entire clean-and-dirty-water burden back to the main dock. The practical sequence is:
- The S10 leaves its charging dock and begins the scheduled or selected cleaning run.
- It travels to the water station when the mop needs servicing or water.
- The station extracts dirty water from the roller-mop system.
- It cleans the cloth-covered roller mop and washes the filter.
- The dirty water is extracted again.
- Fresh water is supplied to the robot.
- The S10 returns to the floor and starts or resumes mopping.
- On a larger or wetter run, the cycle can repeat.
With direct plumbing, clean-water refill and dirty-water drainage can happen automatically. That addresses the central weakness of many hybrid robots: mopping is only genuinely autonomous while someone continues filling and emptying tanks.
The S10 can also use an external water tank when permanent plumbing is not practical. That makes placement more flexible, but it changes the ownership experience. You still have to fill the clean-water tank and remove dirty water, so this fallback is not equivalent to a fully plumbed installation. SwitchBot’s compatibility guide explains the available setup options.
Is the mopping any good?
The S10 uses a cloth-covered spinning roller mop. Clean water is applied as the roller operates, while dirty water is removed. The roller also applies downward pressure to the floor, which can produce more consistent contact than a flat cloth that simply drags behind a robot.
SwitchBot calls the system RevoRoll and RinseSync. Those are manufacturer names, so they should be treated as descriptions of the mechanism rather than independent performance standards. SwitchBot’s specifications describe the system, while an IEEE Spectrum hands-on review found the S10’s mopping particularly effective in its testing.
The important distinction is between “good mopping” and “good autonomous mopping.” The S10’s strongest advantage is that the roller can be repeatedly washed and supplied with fresh water without requiring the owner to intervene after every run. It should still be judged by floor type and mess: dried spills, textured tile, grout, sticky kitchen residue and heavily soiled areas can produce different results.
The mop lifts when the robot detects carpet. That is useful in mixed-floor homes, although owners should still configure carpet areas and restricted zones carefully. Mop lifting is not the same as perfect carpet protection in every layout or failure condition.

How good is the vacuuming?
SwitchBot advertises 6,500 Pa of suction, lidar navigation and a front-facing camera for obstacle avoidance. The mop can lift for carpet. These specifications indicate the hardware and navigation approach, but they do not prove superior real-world pickup: Pascal figures are not a standardized substitute for tests involving fine dust, larger debris, pet hair, carpet and edges.
IEEE Spectrum described the vacuuming as “totally decent” and was more enthusiastic about the mopping. That suggests the S10 should not be purchased solely because its suction figure looks competitive. Its value is the combination of reasonable vacuuming and unusually low-touch water management. The independent review is also older than the current product information: it was published roughly 1.9 years before the August 2026 research date, so current firmware, pricing and smart-home support may differ.
For pet owners, frequent scheduled cleaning and self-emptying can be useful. But hair can shorten brush and filter service intervals, and SwitchBot’s “up to 70 days” dust-collection figure is a manufacturer estimate, not a guarantee. Multiple shedding pets, litter, tracked-in dirt or a large household could fill the bag much sooner. Pet waste avoidance, edge cleaning, noise and detailed pickup performance should not be assumed without direct testing.
Does the S10 really require plumbing?
No. The S10 can operate with an external tank. However, plumbing is what makes the product’s central promise compelling. Without it, the S10 becomes a more conventional tank-maintained mop robot with an unusually capable washing station.

There are three realistic installation patterns:
1. Direct plumbing
This provides the highest level of automation. The water station is connected to a suitable clean-water supply and drain, allowing automatic refill and discharge. The trade-off is installation complexity, possible leak risk, dependence on fixed fittings and difficulty relocating the system.

2. External water tank
This avoids permanent plumbing changes and may suit renters or homes where the station cannot sit near a supply and drain. It restores manual filling and emptying, however, so it reduces the benefit that justifies the S10’s premium.
3. A temporary or utility-area installation
A bathroom, kitchen, laundry room or utility area may offer a practical route for hoses. The setup still has to meet the manufacturer’s fitting, pressure, drain-height and clearance requirements. Do not assume that placing the station beside a sink automatically makes the installation safe or compatible.
Plumbing requirements to check before buying
SwitchBot’s installation guidance specifies the following checks:
- Water inlet: compatible angle-valve sizes include G3/8, G1/2 and G3/4.
- Water pressure: the recommended range is 0.1–0.6 MPa.
- Drain connection: adapters are provided for 38–40 mm P-trap pipes; a 32 mm drainpipe may require a special adapter.
- Drain height: the drainage pipe should not be installed more than 1 metre above the water station.
These are installation requirements, not casual suggestions. Before ordering, photograph the proposed water and drain connections, measure the pipework, check the pressure and confirm the route with a qualified installer if the fitting or cabinetry is unfamiliar. The relevant SwitchBot pre-purchase checklist should be treated as the authority for the final installation.
Where should the two stations go?
The two-station layout is both the S10’s breakthrough and its biggest practical compromise. A single all-in-one dock concentrates equipment in one place. The S10 distributes it.
The charging dock can occupy a convenient living area, while the water station may need to sit in a bathroom, laundry room, kitchen or utility space. That only works if the robot can travel reliably between the stations. Check for:
- Clearance around both stations for accurate docking.
- A continuous route between them.
- Doors that may be closed during scheduled cleaning.
- Thresholds, rugs, furniture and narrow passages.
- Hose routing that does not create trip hazards or block cabinets.
- Access to the station for cleaning, inspection and future repairs.
- A location that will not be rearranged after mapping.
A compact water station is still another appliance. It needs accessible floor space, a reliable connection and a route the robot can find. If it is placed on another floor, behind a closed door or beyond a difficult threshold, the S10 loses the feature that differentiates it.
The Tool Desk

The S10’s autonomy depends on reliable access to both docks. A blocked route, moved station or lost map can prevent the robot from washing or refilling its mop. Other practical validation points include an empty external tank, a shut-off water supply, insufficient pressure, a drain blockage, an incorrectly routed hose or a drain installed too high.
Docking clearance matters as well. If the robot cannot align correctly, the problem is not merely a missed recharge: the water station may be unable to perform the maintenance cycle that makes long unattended runs possible. Keep both stations visible and accessible during initial mapping, and avoid treating doors or furniture as permanent if they will change during operation.
How much maintenance remains?
The S10 reduces routine tank handling; it does not become maintenance-free. SwitchBot markets dust collection for up to 70 days, but actual intervals depend heavily on floor area, debris and pets. The owner still needs to manage:
- Dust-bag replacement.
- Roller-mop inspection, hair removal and replacement.
- Brush and filter cleaning or replacement.
- Cleaning-solution replenishment.
- Inspection of the dirty-water path, hoses and drain.
- Cleaning around both stations.
- Odor prevention and removal of residual moisture.
- Mineral-buildup management in hard-water areas.
- Recovery from obstructions, failed docking or app errors.
Direct drainage may reduce the amount of stagnant dirty water sitting in a tank, but it does not guarantee no mold or odors. Those outcomes depend on cleaning, drying, water quality and maintenance. SwitchBot lists replacement kits, dust bags, brushes, filters, waste-water parts, roller mops and cleaning solution through its accessory listings. Prices and availability change by region; a US listing observed during research showed a water-station price of $139.99 and cleaning solution at $32.99, but readers should verify the live checkout price.

Matter should not be read as “every S10 feature works everywhere.” SwitchBot’s current support documentation says standalone Matter support begins with firmware 1.0.984 or newer and lists firmware 1.1.046 or newer for its current S10 integration table. The same documentation lists iOS 18.5 or newer for its Apple Home functions and Home Assistant 2025.7.2 or newer for its listed Home Assistant support. These requirements and app labels are volatile, so confirm them against the current SwitchBot Matter support page before setup.
Platform actions also differ. Apple Home, Google Home, Home Assistant and SmartThings do not necessarily expose the same room selection, cleaning modes, water controls or maintenance information as the SwitchBot app. Matter compatibility is valuable, but the SwitchBot app remains the safer assumption for full control.

As observed on August 18, 2026, SwitchBot’s international product page listed the S10 at US$1,199.99, with regional voltage variants and region-specific availability. A separate US search result showed a $299.99 “special offer,” which conflicts with the international listing and should not be treated as the normal price without checking the buyer’s regional checkout.
The real cost can include:
- The S10 robot and its primary dock.
- The water station, listed at $139.99 on the official US store when checked.
- Plumbing adapters and possible professional installation.
- Cleaning solution.
- Dust bags, roller mops, brushes, filters and waste-water parts.
- Potential repairs or replacement plumbing components.
That makes the correct comparison the total installed cost, not suction ratings alone. A conventional self-emptying robot may be less autonomous around mopping but substantially cheaper and easier to install. A premium tank-based robot may offer a larger integrated dock while retaining manual water handling. A separate vacuum robot and mop can also be better value where mopping is occasional.
Who should buy the S10?
Buy it when:
- Your home has mostly hard floors.
- You want frequent mopping with minimal daily intervention.
- A laundry, utility, bathroom or kitchen location meets the plumbing requirements.
- You own the property or have permission for the installation.
- The robot can move reliably between both stations.
- You already use SwitchBot or want Matter-based integration.
- The purchase price is meaningfully discounted from the normal list price.
Reconsider it when:
- Your home is mostly carpet.
- There is no practical drain or compatible water supply.
- You cannot alter plumbing and do not want to manage external tanks.
- The robot must cross stairs, thresholds or closed doors to reach its water station.
- You want the simplest possible setup.
- You have multiple shedding pets and expect the advertised 70-day dust interval.
- A cheaper self-emptying robot meets your actual cleaning needs.
- You expect a completely maintenance-free appliance.
How it compares with the alternatives
Use water management and ownership friction as the comparison framework:
| System | Main strength | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|
| SwitchBot S10 | Automatic water refill and drainage when correctly plumbed | Two stations, installation requirements and premium cost |
| Tank-based premium robot | Strong mopping with a more conventional purchase and installation | Owner still fills clean water and empties dirty water |
| Self-emptying vacuum/mop robot | Lower installation burden and often better value | Manual mop and water servicing may be more frequent |
| Vacuum robot plus separate mop | Flexible and potentially inexpensive | Less automation and two separate cleaning workflows |
| Plumbing-retrofit systems | Can add water automation to compatible premium robots | Model, regional plumbing and installation compatibility vary |
IEEE Spectrum notes that Narwal and Roborock offer plumbing-related options for some systems, although compatibility and regional installation support differ. Specific models and current prices should be checked independently before treating them as direct substitutes. The IEEE comparison context is useful, but it is not a current model-by-model buying guide.
Is this really the future for home robots?
As a thesis, yes—with an important qualification. The S10’s genuinely forward-looking idea is not that it has the highest advertised suction or that it eliminates every cleaning task. It is that a robot becomes dramatically more useful when the home provides infrastructure for it: power, water, drainage, defined routes and a permanent place to work.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
That idea may scale well in new homes, utility rooms and smart-home installations. It is less attractive in a rental apartment or a home whose plumbing is far from the best cleaning route. The S10 trades upfront construction and installation complexity for lower recurring water-handling effort.
So the headline claim applies conditionally. The S10 points toward a more appliance-like future for domestic floor robots, but that future depends on reliable installation and long-term ownership—not just an impressive demonstration of a mop being washed automatically.
Final verdict
The SwitchBot S10 is a strong choice for a hard-floor household that can support its water station properly. Its best feature is water autonomy: clean-water refill, dirty-water drainage and repeated roller-mop washing can remove the most irritating maintenance task in robot mopping.
It is not automatically the best robot vacuum, and it is not “100% automated” in the literal sense. You still manage consumables, filters, brushes, obstructions, software and plumbing. If the installation is awkward or the home is mostly carpet, a conventional self-emptying robot is likely the more rational purchase.
Buy the S10 for its infrastructure and reduced maintenance—not because 6,500 Pa guarantees class-leading vacuuming.
