Cemsuisse reported that 988,702 tonnes of cement were delivered to Switzerland and Liechtenstein in the third quarter of 2026, up 1% from the same quarter in 2025. The association also reported a lower rail share: 31.5% of deliveries moved by rail, down 2.5 percentage points year over year.
Quarterly deliveries rose slightly
The 988,702-tonne total covers deliveries to Switzerland and Liechtenstein in July through September 2026, according to cemsuisse. The 1% increase is a comparison with the third quarter of 2025. It indicates a modest rise in cement deliveries, but the release does not identify a cause or independently measure construction activity; the figure alone does not establish a broader change in building demand.

For the first nine months of 2026, cemsuisse put deliveries at roughly 2.8 million tonnes. Its reproduced release does not give a clear exact year-to-date growth rate, so that total should not be treated as an equivalent year-over-year comparison.
Where the cement went and what types were delivered
Cemsuisse said approximately 73% of Swiss cement is delivered loose to ready-mix concrete plants. One fifth of deliveries since the start of 2026 went to on-site concrete plants, often at large projects, particularly infrastructure projects. The release does not give a separate third-quarter share for on-site plants.

The reported product mix was dominated by clinker-reduced cement types: they accounted for more than 98% of delivered cement, while classic Portland cement represented 1.33%. Cemsuisse describes clinker-reduced cement as CO₂-optimized and says its share has grown. The release provides no quantified emissions reduction or emissions-intensity comparison, so the mix figures do not establish a specific amount of emissions avoided.

Rail carried 31.5% of deliveries, a 2.5 percentage-point decline from the year-earlier quarter. Cemsuisse attributes the shift toward road transport to difficult conditions in single-wagon freight. That is the association’s explanation, not an independently established causal finding. It also says the move away from rail runs counter to the industry’s decarbonization ambitions.

“With a transport share of 31.5%, rail deliveries have once again fallen by 2.5 percentage points compared with the previous year. As an industry, we greatly regret this situation.”

The statement and figures appeared in cemsuisse’s “Schweizerische Zementlieferungen im 3. Quartal 2026,” released on 9 October 2026 and reproduced by Swiss-Press. The release’s account of transport conditions and its characterization of the cement mix are cemsuisse’s; it does not provide a separate analysis of freight-market causes or emissions performance.
