Surprising Things You Can and Can’t Compost at Home

Fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, leaves, and plain cardboard are common backyard compost ingredients. Meat, dairy, pet waste, and compostable packaging need a different system or local guidance.

In a typical backyard compost pile, fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, dry leaves, and plain cardboard are usually welcome. Meat, dairy, greasy leftovers, pet waste, treated plants, and compostable packaging generally are not. The key is the composting system: a commercial facility may accept materials that a home pile cannot reliably break down, so check local rules before adding anything unusual.

What can go in a typical backyard compost pile?

EPA groups compost ingredients into “greens,” which supply nitrogen, and “browns,” which supply carbon. Use these as practical examples, not as permission to compost dirty packaging or anything with a sticker attached. EPA’s home-composting guidance lists the following materials.

Greens: common kitchen and garden scraps

  • Fruit and vegetable scraps
  • Grass clippings
  • Coffee grounds and paper filters
  • Paper tea bags without staples
  • Crushed eggshells

Browns: dry plant matter and plain paper

  • Dry leaves, plant stalks, and twigs
  • Untreated wood chips
  • Shredded paper that is non-glossy and uncolored
  • Brown paper bags and cardboard without wax coating, tape, or glue

What should stay out of a backyard pile?

EPA advises against putting the following in a typical home pile. This is not a claim that no composting system can handle them: certain commercial facilities may accept some of these materials, but their rules differ.

  • Meat, fish, bones, cheese, and other dairy
  • Fats, oils, grease, and most cooked food
  • Compostable foodservice ware and compostable bags
  • Herbicide-treated plants or grass; aggressive weeds or weeds with seeds
  • Diseased or pest-infested plants
  • Treated or painted wood
  • Pet waste and cat litter
  • Dryer lint, glossy paper, and produce stickers

Meat, dairy, and greasy foods can attract animals. Some other materials on the list may not fully break down because backyard piles generally do not reach the temperatures needed for them. EPA’s guidance explains the home-pile exclusions and notes that facility acceptance can differ.

Are compostable bags, cups, and utensils backyard compostable?

Usually, no. “Compostable” does not automatically mean suitable for a home pile. EPA says compostable plastics are generally intended for industrial or commercial composting, where conditions differ from those in a typical homeowner bin. A certification or label alone does not establish that a bag, cup, or utensil will break down in your backyard. Keep it out of the pile unless the receiving composting program specifically accepts that item. See EPA’s FAQ on compostable plastics.

Can cooked food, meat, or dairy go in compost?

For a typical backyard pile, leave out meat, fish, bones, dairy, fats, oils, and grease. They can attract animals, and the pile may not provide suitable conditions for them. EPA says small amounts of cooked food are an exception, but its general guidance is to avoid cooked food in a backyard pile. If you have leftovers you want to compost, check whether your municipal program or a commercial processor accepts them.

Can weeds with seeds or diseased plants go in compost?

Keep aggressive weeds and weeds with seeds out of a typical backyard pile, along with diseased or pest-infested plants. The home pile may not reliably destroy seeds or the source of disease and pests. Herbicide-treated plants and grass are also on EPA’s avoid list. Do not treat “plant-based” as a guarantee that garden waste is suitable.

What if you do not have a yard?

Look for municipal curbside food-scrap collection or a community drop-off program. Availability and accepted materials are local, so check the program’s current instructions before sorting scraps. EPA describes home, community, and other composting approaches, which differ in scale and what they can accept.

Compost Tumbler Bin Composter Dual Chamber 43 Gallon (Bundled with Pearson's Gardening Gloves)
  • ✅Speed Up Composing Process: More advanced models use rotating to bring oxygen to the center of the bin and paddles inside the chamber to help mix and aerate the composting materials when turned. These improvements or modifications are designed for one reason: to speed the composting process.
  • ✅How do Compost Tumblers work? Simple. You load them with green and brown waste from your yard and kitchen. When full, you give them time to work, in other words, heat up. Turning a compost pile mixing the organic materials and the organisms it contains with heat-producing oxygen is the traditional method of keeping the process going full steam. By turning the tumbler, the organic materials are mixed and infused with fresh oxygen.
  • ✅Easy to Access Finished Compost: Just Slide the door open and take the organic fertilizer out when the compost is ready. When a check reveals the compost is complete —and this can happen in a matter of weeks —the same access that allowed you to fill the tumbler lets you empty it. Now is the time to spread the results.
  • ✅Dual-Bin Design: The dual bin design takes a different approach to the continuous-use composted concept, Two bins are set side-by-side into a single rotating chamber. Thickly insulated compartments conserve the heat generating by the decaying matter, and this greatly speeds the process. This design also allows you to add food waste to one chamber while the other is composting.
  • ✅Totally Organic and Money-Saving: If you're looking for a fast, convenient way to compost your kitchen throw-outs, grass clippings, and organic yard waste, our outdoor kitchen compost bin is just right for you! The Compact Compost Tumbler quickly recycles it into nutrient-rich compost.

How to keep a backyard pile balanced and discourage pests

  1. Use a secure bin. A lid and secure sides help deter animals.
  2. Balance browns and greens. EPA gives a general ratio of about two to three parts browns to one part greens.
  3. Add water and air. Composting depends on moisture and oxygen as well as carbon-rich browns and nitrogen-rich greens; turn the pile as needed.
  4. Bury fresh scraps and cover them. Add browns over food scraps rather than leaving them exposed.
  5. Respond to odor or pests. An unpleasant odor can point to excess moisture or too little air. Add dry browns and turn the pile; avoid meat, dairy, and greasy foods.

EPA says a well-maintained pile may finish in roughly three to five months, while an untended pile may take about a year. Conditions and management affect timing. Finished compost should be dark, loose, crumbly, and smell like soil; allow at least four weeks of curing after the pile stops heating and visible scraps are gone. See EPA’s home-composting guidance.

Does a countertop food-scrap appliance make compost?

No. EPA describes residential food-scrap units as producing a dried mixture, not finished compost. The output still needs to enter a composting system or receive further treatment. EPA’s overview of composting approaches distinguishes preprocessing from composting.

Why compost food scraps?

Composting turns organic materials into a useful soil amendment rather than sending them directly to disposal. EPA reports that U.S. food retail, food service, and residential sectors generated 66.2 million tons of wasted food in 2019, and 5% of that amount was composted. These are historical U.S. figures, not current-year estimates. EPA also reports that food made up 24.1% of U.S. municipal solid waste sent to landfills, based on 2018 data. See EPA’s composting overview.
