There is no sound basis for ranking eight specific machines as universal winners without comparable specifications for those exact models. Use these eight checks to build a shortlist that suits your operation.
1. Choose the ice type for its job
Start with how customers or staff will use the ice. ENERGY STAR distinguishes batch machines, which make ice in cycles, from continuous machines such as flake and nugget makers. Its guidance identifies batch ice primarily with beverages, flake ice with food displays such as seafood and salad bars, and nugget ice chiefly with beverages.

These are distinct formats, not interchangeable labels for the same output. ENERGY STAR notes that common comparison attributes include ice type, production capacity, hardness, clarity, form factor and footprint.
2. Size production for actual demand
Compare a machine’s manufacturer-rated production with the operation’s expected ice use, including busy periods. Then assess storage separately: a daily production figure does not tell you how much ice is available at a particular moment, and it does not establish bin capacity.

Its modular Crescent model KM-1100MRJZ is listed at 1,156 lb per 24 hours as a remote-cooled machine. These are manufacturer-listed ratings, not guarantees of output in every installation or operating condition. Check the current specification sheet and the conditions behind the rating before comparing models.
- Estimate normal and peak demand rather than relying on a daily average alone.
- Compare rated production on the same basis and for the exact model and configuration.
- Check storage capacity and replenishment needs as separate specifications.
- Confirm the unit’s footprint and installation arrangement before treating its production rating as a practical fit.
3. Confirm whether the machine includes storage
A modular ice-making head may not include the bin or dispenser needed to use and store its output. Hoshizaki says its modular cubelet and Crescent machines need compatible bins or dispensers, and its flaker page says a separate bin is required. Verify the accessory model and compatibility for the exact machine before comparing total cost, footprint or capacity.

Scotsman’s commercial product categories also distinguish ice makers from dispensers and bins/storage, reinforcing that these may be separate parts of a system. A general-purpose bin or filtration product should not be assumed to fit a particular machine.
4. Compare complete configurations, not just machine heads
Commercial machines are sold in different arrangements, including self-contained units, modular ice-making heads and remote-condensing configurations. Cooling may also vary by model. Those differences affect what must be installed and which production, efficiency and space figures are relevant.

- Identify whether the quoted product is a complete machine or an ice-making head that needs a separate bin or dispenser.
- Check air-cooled versus water-cooled or remote-cooled configuration where applicable.
- Compare dimensions, clearances and utility connections for the full installed arrangement, not only the head.
- Ask the installer or dealer to confirm compatibility among the machine, storage, dispenser and site connections.
5. Compare energy and water use within the correct class
ENERGY STAR Version 3.0, effective January 28, 2018, sets different energy-consumption and potable-water-use limits by machine type and configuration. Compare a specific model with the applicable class; do not treat a batch machine, continuous machine, ice-making head, self-contained unit and remote-condensing system as if they shared one benchmark.
ENERGY STAR says certified batch-type machines are about 10% more energy efficient and 20% more water efficient than standard models. Its program estimates for certified batch-type machines are savings of 700 kWh and $150 annually, and $1,200 over the product lifetime on utility bills. For certified continuous-type machines, ENERGY STAR reports about 16% greater energy efficiency than standard models and estimates savings of 1,350 kWh and $170 annually, and $1,300 over the product lifetime.

ENERGY STAR identifies R-290, R-450A and R-513A as lower-global-warming-potential refrigerant options for commercial ice makers and advises buyers to consider lower-GWP choices. Refrigerant can vary by model, so verify it on the current specification sheet rather than generalizing from a brand or product family.

7. Account for installation and ongoing service
Before ordering, have a qualified equipment dealer or installer check the layout, utilities, cooling arrangement and compatibility of all system components. Ask who will handle maintenance and service, how quickly local support is available, and whether required parts or accessories are included or separate. Those details are specific to the site and supplier; a production rating alone cannot establish them.
8. Check local rebates and build a model-by-model shortlist
ENERGY STAR notes that utility rebates may be available and provides a rebate finder. Eligibility and availability depend on location and may change, so confirm the current terms with the utility or rebate provider before including an incentive in a purchase calculation. ENERGY STAR also provides a dealer/distributor resource; verify local coverage directly.
For each candidate, record the same core details so that the comparison is like for like:
- Exact model and ice format
- Manufacturer-rated production and the stated test or rating conditions
- Machine configuration, cooling type and whether storage or dispensing is included
- Bin or dispenser capacity and documented compatibility
- Dimensions, clearances and utility requirements
- ENERGY STAR status and the relevant class-specific energy and water figures
- Refrigerant, maintenance needs and local service coverage
- Current installed cost and any locally verified rebate, obtained from the seller or provider
Manufacturer product pages document genuine options, but they do not establish that one model is best for every operation. For instance, Hoshizaki’s F-1530MAK2-SC and KM-1100MRJZ illustrate different modular ice formats and configurations; their listed production ratings alone are not a complete purchasing comparison. Scotsman lists cube, nugget, flake, dispensers, bins/storage, and filtration/sanitation categories, and its N1322 Prodigy Plus page describes nugget ice. A useful shortlist depends on verified specifications for the exact models under consideration.
