Strangleweed: How to Identify and Control Dodder (and Tell It from Bindweed)

Strangleweed usually refers to dodder, a parasitic vine. Identify it before acting: dodder and field bindweed have different biology and require different control plans.

“Strangleweed” usually means dodder (Cuscuta spp.), a threadlike parasitic vine—not field bindweed, a leafy perennial weed with a very different growth habit. Identify which plant you have before choosing a control method: pulling dodder strands may leave it attached to its host, while a single pull rarely removes bindweed’s persistent roots.

How to tell dodder from field bindweed

Use these signs as a screening aid, not a definitive identification. If you are unsure, photograph the plant and ask a local extension service or other qualified local adviser to identify it before moving or treating it.

What you see Likely plant Why it matters
Fine yellow, yellow-green, orange, or reddish strands wrapped tightly around another plant; leaves absent or reduced to tiny scales Dodder (Cuscuta spp.) Dodder is a parasite. Its haustoria penetrate a host’s vascular tissue to obtain water and nutrients. Some regions have native dodder species, so not every Cuscuta is necessarily a nonnative pest. UF/IFAS Extension and University of Wisconsin–Madison Extension describe its appearance and biology.
A leafy vine that twines through plants, sometimes with small white-to-pink, morning-glory-like flowers Field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis) or another leafy vine Field bindweed makes its own food by photosynthesis. It spreads through roots, rhizomes, and seed, so management focuses on weakening regrowth and preventing seed. See Nevada Extension.

Why each plant keeps coming back

Dodder depends on a host and can leave persistent seed

Dodder seedlings begin life independently, but they must find a suitable host soon after emerging. Wisconsin Extension reports that a seedling that does not reach a host within 5–10 days will not survive. Once attached, haustoria connect the vine to the host’s vascular tissue; the original connection to soil can wither, making the parasite difficult to remove completely from the plant.

Seed longevity estimates vary by source and conditions. UF/IFAS reports dodder seed viability in soil for more than 10 years. Wisconsin Extension reports survival for up to 20 years or more, depending on species and environmental conditions. These are separate published estimates, not a single guaranteed lifespan for every site.

Bindweed regrows from underground parts

Field bindweed can send up shoots from deep roots and horizontal rhizomes, and viable fragments can spread it. Nevada Extension reports that bindweed seed has been known to remain dormant for over 50 years; that is a reported possibility, not a forecast for every seed or garden. For identification and control guidance, see UC Statewide IPM and Nevada Extension.

If it is dodder: remove the parasite and limit spread

  1. Stop it from hitchhiking. Inspect incoming nursery stock and use clean planting material. Clean tools and equipment after working in an infested area so you do not carry plant material or seed elsewhere.
  2. Remove the host and dodder together when feasible. For a small infestation, UF/IFAS says simultaneous removal is more effective than hand-removing the strands alone. If only a small branch or portion of a valued plant is affected, pruning below the attachment point may be an option if that part can be removed without unacceptable damage.
  3. Do not rely on pulling visible strands. Small stem fragments may regrow, and embedded haustoria can remain in the host. Dispose of affected material according to local guidance rather than moving it to another planting area.
  4. Prevent seed and keep scouting. Flowering and seed production can occur from late spring through fall, depending on species and conditions. Check plants for new growth and manage host weeds that could support another infestation.
  5. Check local rules before moving or disposing of suspect plants. In the United States, UF/IFAS describes nonnative Cuscuta as regulated in Florida and federally in the context of its guidance. In Canada, the CFIA describes regulation of nonnative dodders and exemptions for listed native species under the Plant Protection Act. These rules are jurisdiction- and species-specific; consult the current requirements where you live. See CFIA’s dodder guidance.

If it is field bindweed: plan for repeated suppression

Remove young plants and stop seed production

Pull or remove seedlings early and cut back established growth before it flowers and sets seed. Preventing seed reduces new plants, but it does not eliminate roots already in the ground. A mature plant may resprout after a single removal because underground roots and rhizomes remain.

Repeat top-growth removal; avoid spreading fragments

Repeatedly cutting or removing new growth can weaken bindweed over time. Avoid rototilling: chopping roots and rhizomes may move viable fragments into new parts of the garden. UC IPM and Nevada Extension describe persistent follow-up—not a one-time pull—as central to control.

Use shading where it suits the site

Blocking light with suitable landscape fabric or other mulch can suppress bindweed. UC IPM says landscape fabric covered by bark, plant-derived cover, or rock will likely keep it from emerging, but complete death under mulch can take 3–5 years. Nevada Extension also describes shade cloth or cardboard covered with mulch as suppression options. Check the area after removing a cover, since buried seed may germinate.

Use herbicides only when the site and label allow

UC IPM describes herbicides as more useful for suppressing bindweed than eradicating it. In its guidance, fall application of glyphosate offers the best control, and repeat applications may be needed. That is not a universal product prescription: the treatment must be permitted for the specific site and plants, and the current product label governs use. Protect desirable plants and follow all label directions.

Choose a control plan that fits the plant and site

Situation Practical emphasis Main trade-off
Small dodder infestation on a removable host Remove the host and attached dodder together; clean tools and monitor nearby plants. Removal may sacrifice the host plant.
Dodder on a valued plant, with a removable affected branch Consider pruning below the attachment point, then watch for remaining strands or regrowth. Pruning can disfigure or damage the plant, and removal may be incomplete.
Established bindweed near valued plants Repeatedly suppress shoots and prevent seed; consider shading if it can be maintained safely. Control takes persistence; shading occupies the area and may need years of follow-up.
Bindweed where herbicide is being considered Check local legality, site restrictions, and the current label; protect non-target plants. Herbicide may suppress growth without eradicating the underground system.
