To reduce driveway weeds over time, remove plants before they set seed, clear the soil and debris where they are rooting, and maintain the surface so new material does not keep accumulating. The right prevention depends on whether you have asphalt or concrete, conventional pavers, permeable pavers, or loose gravel; recurring ponding or runoff also calls for a site-specific drainage assessment.

Weeds commonly establish in cracks, joints, depressions, and gravel where soil and organic debris collect. Cornell University notes that weeds in hard-surface gaps can expand cracks and destabilize joints and seals. Removing visible growth helps, but lasting prevention means attending to the opening, the surface material, and how water and sediment move across the driveway.

Start by Identifying the Driveway Surface

Surface Prevention focus Important distinction
Asphalt or concrete Seal suitable cracks, sweep away accumulating debris, and remove weeds before they set seed. Use a repair appropriate to the crack or joint; the dossier does not prescribe a particular sealant.
Conventional pavers Keep joints filled with a compatible material and remove weeds carefully. Polymeric sand is one option for some conventional pavers, not a universal choice.
Permeable pavers Maintain the system’s specified joint stone and keep sediment from clogging the surface. Follow the installed system’s guide; Rockville advises against applying sand to permeable interlocking pavement.
Loose gravel Maintain a sufficiently thick gravel layer, rake regularly, and manage weeds at the edges. The cited guidance does not specify a universal driveway depth or aggregate grade.

Remove Weeds Without Creating New Problems

Remove weeds before they form seeds to reduce their spread. A block-paving brush can help with moss and small, less-established plants; a thin-bladed or pointed crack tool can reach plants in joints and crevices. Manual scraping may leave roots behind and disturb paver joint fill, so inspect the area afterward and replace displaced joint material as appropriate.

For plants with large taproots, wetting the soil can make removal easier. Work carefully around pavers and joint stone rather than pulling in a way that loosens or empties the joint. A crack weeder or paver joint knife is a removal tool, not a lasting prevention measure.

Fixes by Driveway Type

Asphalt and Concrete

Cracks, joints, and depressions collect soil and debris that allow weeds to establish. Remove plants and accumulated material, then seal suitable pavement cracks and maintain the surface. Sweep regularly so dust, leaves, and other material do not build up again. If a crack is widening, a joint is unstable, or the surface is uneven, assess the underlying pavement condition rather than treating the weed alone.

Not every opening should receive the same repair product. Choose a method that fits the pavement and the particular crack or joint, and follow the repair product’s instructions. The sources reviewed for this guide do not establish a universal compound, price, or repair lifespan.

Conventional Pavers

Filled joints leave fewer openings for soil and seeds to settle. Cornell University identifies polymeric sand as one option between bricks and pavers, but suitability depends on the paving system. Remove weeds carefully, then inspect the joint fill and restore it where needed with a compatible material and according to the paver or product instructions.

Permeable Pavers

Permeable interlocking pavement relies on water passing through the surface into an underlying aggregate system. Its joints and infiltration path need system-specific care. The City of Rockville’s maintenance guide says to pull weeds carefully to avoid disturbing joint stone, refill that stone as needed, and not apply sand.

Keep eroding soil and sediment from washing onto permeable paving. Check whether downspouts or landscape erosion are contributing debris. If water mostly runs off or remains on the surface after rain, Rockville’s guide says reduced permeability may be the cause and recommends vacuuming. Follow the guide for the installed system rather than applying a generic cleaning method.

Gravel Driveways

Weeds can establish when soil and organic material accumulate between gravel or when the gravel layer becomes thin. Cornell University recommends monitoring gravel and adjacent edges, controlling weeds at edges, maintaining a thick layer, and raking regularly. Raking minimizes soil accumulation and makes it harder for weeds to root between or below the gravel. Periodically adding a new layer may be needed; the cited guidance does not give a universal depth or stone specification for residential driveways.

Inspect the gravel and its edges, rake areas where soil and debris have accumulated, and replenish gravel where the layer has thinned. If water is ponding or washing material across the drive, diagnose the drainage and runoff route as part of the repair rather than assuming more gravel alone will solve it.

Understand Drainage Before Choosing a Fix

Standing water or runoff can carry soil and debris into cracks, joints, and gravel. Observe where water comes from and where it goes during rain before selecting a drainage change. A low spot, an eroding bed, a downspout, and inadequate infiltration can call for different solutions.

Interlocking pavers or an interceptor drain at the lower driveway edge may collect runoff and direct it into a landscape, according to UC IPM. Permeable pavement works differently: Virginia Cooperative Extension explains that it stores runoff in an aggregate reservoir while water infiltrates. An underdrain may be needed when runoff is substantial or soil infiltrates too slowly. Illinois Extension recommends design consultation for permeable installations. These are site-dependent approaches, not universal DIY layouts.

If runoff threatens a structure or a permeable system repeatedly fails to infiltrate, get an assessment suited to the site and the installed system. Do not guess at a drain size or assume that a permeable surface will work without considering soil infiltration and overflow needs.

Keeping Weeds from Returning

  1. Identify the surface. Distinguish solid pavement, conventional pavers, permeable pavers, and loose gravel before selecting a repair or joint fill.
  2. Remove weeds early. Pull or brush out growth before it sets seed, taking care not to empty paver joints.
  3. Clear accumulated material. Sweep or rake soil, leaves, and other debris out of cracks, joints, depressions, and gravel.
  4. Restore the appropriate surface material. Seal suitable cracks, refill conventional paver joints with compatible material, replace permeable joint stone as needed, or replenish gravel where the layer has thinned.
  5. Check water and sediment sources. Correct contributing erosion or runoff problems and follow system-specific guidance for permeable paving.
  6. Inspect and maintain routinely. Sweeping, raking, joint checks, and drainage inspection are recurring tasks, not a guarantee of maintenance-free weed control.

How do I keep weeds out of paver joints?

Remove weeds carefully, inspect the joints, and restore displaced fill with a material compatible with the paving system. Polymeric sand may suit some conventional pavers, but it is not appropriate for every system.

Can I use sand between permeable pavers?

Follow the installed system’s maintenance guide. The City of Rockville advises against applying sand to permeable interlocking pavement and recommends refilling joint stone as needed.

Why are weeds growing through my gravel driveway?

Soil and organic debris can build up between gravel, especially where the layer is thin or the edges collect material from adjacent areas. Rake regularly, control weeds along edges, and maintain a sufficiently thick gravel layer.

How do I fix driveway drainage so weeds stop coming back?

First identify the source and route of water and sediment. Drainage solutions depend on runoff volume, soil infiltration, and the paving system. Permeable pavement may require system-specific design, and an underdrain may be needed in some conditions; seek a site-specific assessment when water repeatedly ponds or threatens a structure.
