Official sources reviewed do not confirm that the towers were “blown up” or demolished by implosion.
What happened to Stirling Towers?
The site formerly held the Stirling Towers public housing complex: a vacant 12-storey tower, a smaller three-storey building and associated works. The City of Vincent approved demolition in May 2024, and a demolition tender was awarded the following month. The State later reported that demolition and site-preparation works were completed in July 2025. Was it “blown up”?
The reviewed official material names Brajkovich Demolition & Salvage (WA) as the contractor but does not specify explosives, implosion or another demolition method. “Blown up” is therefore not a verified description of how the buildings came down.
What is being built on the site?
The Smith Street Build-to-Rent Project is a four-storey development planned to contain 109 rental homes. The published breakdown is 78 social homes, 22 affordable homes and nine homes for specialist disability accommodation and overnight assistance. The project is near Perth CBD, public transport, shopping and other amenities. The State describes the project as a pilot within its Housing Diversity Pipeline, intended to provide social, affordable and market rental housing on government-owned land. However, the published 109-home breakdown specifies the three categories above; it does not separately identify a number of market-rent homes. The official FAQ names Architectus as architect and says a lemon-scented gum on the northeastern boundary is to be retained, with planting and tree canopy planned for communal open space. Who is funding the project?
In 2025, the State announced a contribution of more than $30 million and a $46 million contribution from the Federal Social Housing Accelerator Payment fund. These are published funding contributions; they are not a verified final total project cost. State construction announcement.

The Department’s FAQ, updated 11 August 2025, says the affordable homes are intended for low-to-moderate-income households who do not qualify for social housing but cannot afford current market rent. It gives approximate income examples of $62,000 for a single person and $86,000 for a couple.
