A successful sensory garden for children is built around the children who will use it and the conditions of the site. Plan safe, reachable ways to explore sight, sound, smell and touch; treat any tasting as a supervised food-growing activity; and include paths, shade, seating and a quieter place to pause. Start with purpose and access, then choose plants and features that suit the site and can be maintained.

How do you plan a sensory garden for kids?

Begin by deciding who the garden is for and what they should be able to do there. It might support free play, learning, quiet observation, food growing, or a mix. Consider children’s ages, abilities and sensory preferences, as well as whether adults or caregivers need to share the space. The Sensory Trust recommends defining the goal, users and delivery plan before drawing detailed features in its planning guide.

Next, assess the site. Note sun and shade, soil, drainage, wind, water access, existing plants, paths and the time available for upkeep. Plant choices depend on local climate and conditions; examples from Australia, Britain or Florida are not universal planting prescriptions. The Botanic Gardens of Sydney’s guide for children specifically recommends considering soil, natural light and drainage.

Plan access, supervision and comfort

Work out how children and adults will enter, move around, reach garden features, sit and rest. Consider path surfaces and gradients, trip hazards, seating, shade, shelter and where caregivers can supervise. Keep interactive features close to paths and at a height their intended users can reach. Raised beds or containers can bring planting closer to a seated or standing child; choose their height and location for the people who will use them, not as a one-size-fits-all accessibility solution. If relevant to the setting, consider the route to toilets as part of the layout.

What can you put in a sensory garden for children?

Use a mix of plants and non-plant features to invite exploration. The five senses are a useful way to build a palette, but movement, cause and effect, seasonal change and a sense of enclosure can also shape the experience. Choose features that suit the children’s interests and sensitivities rather than trying to make every area intensely stimulating.

  • Sight: Vary flower and foliage color, shape, pattern and height; bark and other non-flower details add visual interest. Strong color contrasts may also help with wayfinding for some visitors with residual vision.
  • Touch: Pair different plant textures with safe hard surfaces, such as smooth and rough materials. Because the garden invites contact, select robust plants and durable materials that can tolerate handling.
  • Smell: Include a range of scents, such as foliage that releases fragrance when touched. More fragrance is not always better: strong scents and pollen can bother people with asthma or sensitivities.
  • Sound: Rustling grasses, leaves underfoot and moving water can create sound. Optional chimes may suit a larger space, but can be overpowering in a small one.
  • Taste: Food-growing can help children learn where food comes from. Clearly identify edible plants and supervise tasting; do not invite children to eat unidentified plant material.
  • Movement and cause and effect: Water channels or interactive objects can let children observe how an action produces a result. Make sure features are appropriate for the users and can be maintained safely.

For design ideas across sensory features, see the Sensory Trust design guide and Botanic Gardens of Sydney’s children’s guide.

What plants are safe for a children’s sensory garden?

There is no single plant list that is safe for every child, climate and site. Think about poisonous plants, allergies, skin sensitivities, pesticide requirements and the chance that a child may mouth or eat a plant. The Botanic Gardens of Sydney advises avoiding plants that are poisonous, allergenic or likely to require pesticides when users are encouraged to interact with them. The Royal Horticultural Society’s sensory-garden guidance also notes that children can have allergies to plants used in cooking.

Before settling on species, check local horticultural or poison-control guidance, especially if children may put plants in their mouths. Confirm that each plant suits the site’s climate and conditions, and check cultivar, toxicity, allergy and maintenance considerations locally. Regional examples from the Botanic Gardens of Sydney, the RHS or other institutions should not be treated as a globally applicable planting prescription. The Sensory Trust’s plant guidance discusses assessing risk in relation to intended users, likely ingestion and skin sensitivities.

Keep any food-growing area clearly identifiable. Children should taste only plants an adult has positively identified as edible and approved for that activity; a fragrant or familiar-looking plant is not necessarily safe to eat.

How can you make the garden welcoming and understandable?

Make it easy for children to understand what they can explore. Signs, symbols, maps or color coding can identify sensory areas and explain how to interact with a feature. In a school or group setting, children can help choose plants, make signs and take part in care activities, with tasks suited to their ages and abilities. The Botanic Gardens of Sydney and RHS both describe ways to involve children in garden activities.

Balance active exploration with a quieter, sheltered place to rest or take time out. A sensory garden does not need to stimulate every sense everywhere. A UK government case study of a garden developed with young people with disabilities describes a snug or den as a place to pause.

How do you keep a sensory garden manageable?

Match the design to the time, skills and resources available for care. Prioritize sturdy features and plants suited to the site, and consider how paths, surfaces, water features and plantings will be maintained. Avoid adding interactive elements that the responsible adults cannot keep safe and functional. A smaller, well-kept area can offer more usable exploration than a larger layout whose access or upkeep is neglected.

Before building, review the plan with the children and caregivers who will use the space. Check that routes and features are reachable, that there is somewhere to rest, that planting choices have been assessed for the actual users, and that the maintenance plan is realistic.
