Researchers have tested treated desert sand as concrete aggregate, blends that combine desert sand with crushed sands, fine sifted sand as a cementitious-material component, and several kinds of sand-based brick. Each route has different processing needs and performance evidence; none establishes that ordinary dune sand is ready for every construction project.
Why desert sand needs processing
“Desert sand” is not one standardized construction material. Its grain size, shape, surface condition and composition vary, and research findings apply to the particular material and mix tested. A treatment or blend that performs well in one laboratory formulation does not automatically validate another sand source or a full-scale project.
The studies take several distinct approaches: use treated sand as fine aggregate, blend it with natural crushed and recycled crushed sand, sift out a very fine fraction for a binder-related role, or make bricks using stabilization or specialized manufacturing. These are different material pathways, not interchangeable recipes. A 2022 critical review surveys desert sand’s use as aggregate or binder and related workability, strength, durability and artificial-aggregate research, but does not define a single commercial specification. Read the review.
What happens when treated desert sand replaces concrete aggregate?
In a 2023 concrete study, Hamada and colleagues treated desert sand and used it as fine aggregate at different replacement levels. Their highest reported 28-day compressive strength was 61.06 MPa at 50% replacement. The control mix, with no treated desert sand, reached 48.7 MPa; the mix with 100% replacement reached 41.73 MPa. These figures describe the tested mix design and treatment, not a general strength range for desert-sand concrete. See the study.

- User-Friendly: Made with 100% natural, chemical free, coarse sand; Reusable and natural sand material minimizes waste
Strength is only one performance measure
Fresh-concrete workability declined as the treated-sand proportion rose: the study reported a slump of 130 mm for the control and 80 mm for the 100% replacement mix. The authors also found flexural and tensile strengths tended to fall as the desert-sand content increased, particularly above 25% replacement. They reported more compact material and fewer pores in their SEM/EDS observations. A stronger compressive result at one replacement level therefore does not mean every relevant property improved.
For a real project, the mix would need to be designed and tested for its intended use, including fresh workability and the relevant hardened-strength and durability requirements. The paper’s results do not establish acceptance under a current building code for any particular location.

- Clean, Ready-to-Use Sand: Washed, screened, and dried to remove fines and impurities, delivering a consistent coarse grain that’s ready to use straight from the bag without additional preparation
- Comfortable Coop Surface: Carefully graded coarse sand creates a natural surface that supports daily movement while being easier on chickens’ feet and legs during routine activity
- Improved Drainage Performance: Coarse grain structure allows moisture to pass through and evaporate more quickly, helping maintain a drier coop floor between regular cleanings
- Simplified Daily Maintenance: Free-flowing, non-clumping grains make sifting and waste removal easier, helping streamline routine coop cleaning and upkeep tasks
- Naturally Sourced Material: Derived from natural mineral deposits and processed through washing, screening, and drying to provide consistent material for poultry habitat and animal farming use
Blending desert sand with other sands
A 2024 Ain Shams Engineering Journal study tested modified sand formulations combining desert sand, natural crushed sand and recycled crushed sand. The researchers made concrete mixes both with and without 12.5% silica fume. They reported that all eight tested mixes fulfilled ACI 318-08 requirements, and that silica-fume combinations increased compressive strength at later ages beyond 28 days. That is a result for the study’s materials, formulations and cited ACI edition—not blanket approval under current codes or for another project’s mix. See the modified-sand study.
Using very fine desert sand in a binder-related role
Another route uses a sifted fraction smaller than 75 μm as supplementary cementitious material rather than as ordinary sand aggregate. A 2023 paper identified a 10% dosage as optimal in its tested formulation. This finding concerns that fine fraction and formulation; it does not mean 10% is a universal recipe or that ordinary dune sand can replace cement. Read the study.

Sand-based bricks use different manufacturing routes
Sand-based bricks are not one product category with one process. The cited studies examine bacterial stabilization, autoclaving and cold sintering, and report different performance measures. Their findings should be evaluated separately rather than combined into a single claim about “desert-sand bricks.”
Bacteria-stabilized bricks
A 2020 ASCE study reported unfired compressive strength of at least 5 MPa for bricks made from desert sand and cement infused with nonureolytic bacteria. That is a finding for the study’s brick formulation and process; it does not by itself establish commercial scale or suitability for a particular building. Read the paper.

Autoclaved bricks
A 2024 study examined MU15-grade autoclaved bricks made with desert sand in Xinjiang, including water absorption and resistance to sulfate attack. Those properties matter for assessing performance in the studied context, but the study does not establish that bricks made elsewhere, by another process, will behave the same way. Read the study.
Cold-sintered sand and gypsum bricks
A 2024 study explored cold-sintering sand with uncalcined dihydrate gypsum, drawing inspiration from natural sand roses. The university repository record reports that mixtures with more than 30% micron-sized gypsum, subjected to cyclic pressure of 100 MPa for 15 minutes, achieved superior unconfined compressive strength to equidimensional concrete bricks in the reported comparison. These are specific process conditions and a study result—not evidence that the bricks are broadly available or ready for routine construction. See the study record.

The cited work demonstrates laboratory formulations and research pathways. It does not establish broad commercial availability, acceptance for a specific current building code, or a universal life-cycle advantage for one defined desert-sand product. Those questions require evidence tied to a product, location, project and supply chain.
Can it be used for houses and roads?
For houses, the studies support the narrower conclusion that desert sand can be incorporated into experimental concrete and brick formulations using specific processing routes. They do not certify a house-building product or provide a universal mix specification. For roads, the cited studies do not establish a road-ready desert-sand material or validate its performance in pavement construction. Any proposed use would need to be assessed against the project’s engineering requirements and applicable local standards.
