The spiral is a design choice, not a construction formula. Plan its route, width, surface, and water drainage around the garden and its users before installation.
Plan the route around how the garden is used
A path connects destinations and gives people and pets a way through the garden without trampling plants. It can also help keep feet dry, limit soil compaction, provide maintenance access, and create a place to pause and enjoy a view. These are among the benefits described by UF/IFAS Extension’s walkway guidance.
Start by marking the places the route should connect: a gate, patio, seating area, planting bed, or focal feature. Then trace a possible spiral around or toward the feature you want visitors to notice. Treat that inward or circling movement as a design intention; the extension guidance supports circular routes as garden features but does not prescribe spiral geometry.
Lay out the proposed route against existing and planned structures and planting beds. Check that it leaves room to reach plants for routine care, and consider whether people will walk alone, together, or with pets. UF/IFAS recommends a width of 3 feet or more for walkways intended for more than one person. That is general planning guidance, not a complete accessibility standard.

Choose a surface for the garden’s character and conditions
Surface choice affects the path’s appearance, water movement, and upkeep. UF/IFAS associates brick, cut stone, and pervious pavers with formal landscapes; it lists flagstone, crushed shells, stepping stones, gravel, and mulch as options for a more natural or organic setting. The Home Depot’s paver-path overview also identifies decomposed granite, interlocking pavers, and combinations of pea gravel with stone pavers as possible styles.

Do not assume that these surfaces are interchangeable in comfort, stability, traction, maintenance, or cost. The sources do not provide a comprehensive comparison on those points, so choose based on the route’s actual use and conditions rather than an unsupported ranking.

Design the path to manage water
Plan runoff before choosing the final route and surface. UF/IFAS recommends a 2% slope to one side to encourage drainage and favors pervious surfaces wherever possible. Its examples of permeable walkway materials include mulch, stepping stones, gravel, porous concrete, and pervious pavers. A surface’s permeability alone does not establish how water will behave on a particular site; avoid a layout that directs runoff toward a building or leaves water pooling on the route.
Loose materials need containment: UF/IFAS recommends edging for gravel and mulch. If using stepping stones, leave spaces between them for water flow. Where a mower will pass, set the stones level and low enough to mow over.

Build to the conditions on your site
The sources offer broad planning guidance, not a universal construction specification. They do not establish excavation depth, sub-base thickness, bedding layer, compaction method, joint material, or a single slope suitable for every garden. Those details depend on soil, climate, grade, drainage, and the loads the path must carry.
- Mark and review the route. Lay out the intended spiral and check its connections, width, planting-bed clearances, maintenance access, and relationship to structures.
- Confirm the surface and water plan. Match the material to the garden’s character and use, then decide how the route will shed or absorb water. UF/IFAS’s 2% side-slope recommendation is general guidance, not a site-specific drainage design.
- Resolve construction details for the site. Determine the base, bedding, and installation method according to the soil, intended load, and local drainage conditions. Seek qualified site-specific advice when grading or runoff is uncertain.
- Install containment and set the walking surface. Edge loose gravel or mulch. Space stepping stones for water flow and keep them level and mowable where lawn equipment crosses them.
UF/IFAS defines a labyrinth as a circular path without a dead end; that definition does not make a labyrinth the same thing as a spiral. Use the spiral as your chosen layout, and make its turns, dimensions, and construction decisions fit the site rather than relying on a supposed universal spiral standard.
