Use a spade to cut soil cleanly, edge a garden bed, slice sod, or dig a precise planting hole. Choose a pointed digging shovel for general digging and lifting, and a square-point or scoop shovel to move loose material. Because manufacturers sometimes use the names differently, compare the blade shape and intended task—not just the label.
Spade vs. shovel: what is the practical difference?
A spade generally has a flatter blade and a straight, sharp lower edge. That shape helps make controlled cuts through soil. A digging shovel generally has a rounded or pointed blade that enters the ground and lifts loosened soil. A wider, cupped shovel blade is better suited to carrying loose material.
The distinction is not consistent across every product range: some manufacturers call pointed digging tools spades. Fiskars’ guide, for example, discusses pointed, rounded, and square shovel and spade types. Check the blade and the tool’s stated purpose before buying.
Which tool should you use for the job?
| Task | Good starting choice | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Cut a clean garden-bed edge or slice sod | Garden or border spade | The flat, sharp edge makes a controlled cut. |
| Dig a precise planting hole or divide crowded plants | Garden spade | Its shape suits close, controlled soil work. |
| Dig a general hole or lift loosened soil | Pointed digging shovel | The point enters soil, while the blade helps lift it. |
| Move soil, gravel, mulch, or other loose bulk material | Square-point or scoop shovel | The wider, cupped blade carries loose material. Fiskars says its square tip holds significantly more than a pointed or rounded spade; that is the manufacturer’s qualitative guidance, not an independently quantified comparison. |
| Make a narrow irrigation or drainage trench | Trenching spade | The narrow blade disturbs a smaller strip of ground. |
How blade shape changes the work
Flat edge: cutting and shaping
A garden spade’s straight edge is useful when you want a neat boundary or a deliberate cut through turf and soil. Virginia Cooperative Extension describes flat-edged garden spades as suited to this kind of work. For edging, sod cutting, and controlled garden digging, look for a garden spade with a sharp, straight lower edge.

Pointed or rounded blade: entering and lifting soil
A pointed digging shovel is a practical first choice for general digging and lifting. The point helps the blade enter the ground, and the broader blade can lift loosened soil. Virginia Cooperative Extension also describes rounded blades among the tools used for digging.
Wide, cupped blade: carrying loose material
When the task is moving already-loose material rather than cutting into undisturbed ground, a square-point or scoop shovel is usually the better fit. Its broader blade can carry more material than a narrow digging blade, although capacity depends on the particular tool.

Choose the handle to fit you
Handle length, grip, and material affect comfort and control. There is no universally best handle material or length for every user and task. If possible, hold the tool before buying: check that you can grip it securely and work with its length without straining. Cornell Cooperative Extension’s garden guidance also treats handle preference as a matter of fit.

- Start with the job: cutting, digging, trenching, or transferring loose material.
- Inspect the blade shape and lower edge instead of relying on the product name alone.
- For a narrow trench, choose a purpose-made trenching spade rather than a broad garden spade.
- Consider handle length, grip, and material in relation to your comfort and control.
