You usually do not need to know the Sony code in advance. Turn on the TV, select the TV mode on your universal remote, and use its Auto Code Search, Manual Code Search, or brand-search feature. When the TV responds, save that code and test more than the Power button.
There is no single “Sony TV universal remote code.” Code numbers and programming steps vary by the remote’s manufacturer, model, code-list version, and communication method. Sony says codes assigned to third-party remotes are different from codes used by Sony universal remotes; Sony’s own codes such as 01 or 001 should not be assumed to work on a GE, RCA, Philips, or One For All remote. Before you start
- Install fresh batteries.
- Turn the Sony TV on fully, rather than leaving it in standby.
- Point the remote directly at the TV’s infrared receiver and remove obstructions.
- Find the exact remote model number. It may be printed inside the battery compartment or beneath the batteries.
- Keep a way to turn the TV back on manually if the search switches it off.
For GE/Jasco remotes, also check the code-list version inside or beneath the battery compartment. Common versions include CL3, CL4, CL5, and CL6. The correct instructions and code list depend on that version.

What “program without a code” means
Code-free setup does not bypass programming. The remote searches its internal library and tests stored infrared codes until the television responds.

- Bluetooth or RF pairing: This is a separate wireless process. An ordinary infrared universal remote may not reproduce Bluetooth-only Sony TV functions.
Fastest option: Auto Code Search
The general sequence is similar across many remotes, but button names are not standardized:
- Turn on the Sony TV manually.
- Press the remote’s TV device button.
- Enter the remote’s setup or code-search mode.
- Start the search using the model-specific search key, such as POWER, CH+, or VOL+.
- When the TV turns off or responds to the test command, stop immediately.
- Save the result using the required device or confirmation button.
- Turn the TV back on and test its important controls.
Do not assume that “TV turns off” means setup is complete. The first responding code may control only part of the television.
GE/Jasco universal remotes
These instructions are GE/Jasco-specific; confirm them against the exact remote model and its current manual. Jasco’s published process generally works as follows:

- Press and release TV.
- Press and hold SETUP until the indicator light turns on.
- Start code search with the key specified for your model, commonly POWER or another search command.
- When the TV turns off, stop the search.
- Press the same device button used to start setup to store the code.
- Turn the television back on and test Power, Volume, Input, Menu, navigation, Home, and other required buttons.
Jasco explains that some remotes search codes in groups of ten. If the TV responds during a batch, press VOL Up repeatedly to review the individual codes, waiting about three seconds after each attempt. Use VOL Down to move backward when supported. If your GE remote uses CH+, VOL+, or another key to begin or advance the search, use that model’s instructions instead of substituting the sequence above. For direct entry, Jasco’s typical workflow is to hold SETUP, press the device button, enter a four-digit code from the remote’s own list, and test it. Jasco warns that some codes operate only a subset of functions; its code-list page also explains version differences.
RCA universal remotes
RCA layouts and setup keys differ among models such as the RCR504BR, RCRBB04GBE, and RCRH02BR. Use the manual for the exact remote rather than one generic RCA sequence.
RCA Auto Code Search
Most supported RCA models follow this pattern:
- Turn on the TV.
- Press and hold TV.
- Press CODE SEARCH or the model’s setup key.
- Use the search command to cycle through the stored codes.
- When the TV turns off or responds, save the code with the specified device or confirmation button.
- Test several functions.
RCA Manual Code Search
Manual search advances through codes individually. It is useful when Auto Search stops on a code that controls Power but not Input, Menu, navigation, or Volume. RCA manuals describe code search as the fallback when listed brand codes fail or the brand is absent, and caution that a found code may control only some features. Philips universal remotes
Philips setup is also model-specific. Some Philips remotes use a device-mode button together with OK, followed by a four-digit code; that sequence cannot automatically be transferred to every Philips model.

Check the remote’s model number and look in its manual for Auto Code Search, Code Search, or Search Mode. If the remote supports only direct entry, use the Sony codes listed for that particular Philips remote. Philips notes that setup controls, timing, confirmation flashes, and device-mode behavior vary by model. See Philips’ setup guidance.
One For All remotes
Use One For All’s support and product-number lookup to identify the exact remote. The model number may be on the remote, inside the battery compartment, on its packaging, or in the original manual.
For example, the Sony-specific URC 4812 has its own setup process and a follow-up step for keys that do not work as expected. Newer Sony TVs may work with the basic setup, but the manufacturer does not imply that every function on every Sony model is guaranteed. Consult the URC 4812 manual. The Sony-focused URC 1812 has its own support and code-finder resources.
Cable, satellite, and streaming-box remotes
A provider-issued remote may have a restricted code library, separate TV and cable modes, or a provider-specific reset and lockout process. Identify the remote manufacturer printed on the remote or inside the battery compartment—not only the name of the cable company.

These remotes may control Power and Volume while failing to control Home, Input, app shortcuts, voice search, Settings, Bravia-specific menus, or functions sent over Bluetooth rather than infrared. A generic infrared remote also may not control RF streaming hardware. For example, Jasco excludes certain Roku Streaming Stick and Amazon Fire TV Stick uses from particular GE remotes; check the specifications for your exact model.
Which Sony code should you try?
Use the code list made for your remote. Sony’s 01 or 001 references apply to Sony universal remotes, not automatically to third-party models. A four-digit Sony code from a Philips remote should not be copied into a GE, RCA, or One For All remote unless that remote’s own documentation lists it.
Sony’s remote-code database is primarily for Sony remote controls. Sony directs owners of non-Sony remotes to the third-party manufacturer. Compatibility depends on the Sony TV model, remote model, code-list revision, region, and whether communication is infrared, Bluetooth, or another wireless technology.

If Power works but several other buttons fail, turn the TV back on, run the search again, and save the next Sony code that responds. Keep the code with the broadest useful control, not necessarily the first one found.
Troubleshooting

Also confirm that the TV responds to its physical power button and that the universal remote’s indicator light operates. If every code fails, the remote may not include the TV’s required operating frequency. Sony does not guarantee complete compatibility with every third-party remote; see its compatibility guidance.
When a universal remote is the wrong solution
Choose a Sony-specific replacement remote when you mainly want reliable Sony button mapping and simple setup. Choose a learning remote when you still have a working original remote and need to copy commands. Choose a remote that explicitly supports Bluetooth, voice control, app shortcuts, or your streaming platform when those features matter.
For multi-device systems, a larger universal remote may be appropriate, but extra device capacity does not guarantee full control of a smart Sony TV. Verify the exact product’s supported devices and limitations. A GE/Jasco universal remote can be practical for basic infrared TV, soundbar, or cable-box control, while One For All’s Sony-specific URC 4812 or URC 1812 is a more focused option for Sony owners. Manufacturer documentation—not a mixed online code list—is the safest compatibility check.
