IMAX Enhanced on an AV receiver is not a universal sound-improvement button. It is the receiver-side part of an IMAX-and-DTS certification and content-delivery program. When compatible IMAX Enhanced content supplies the right DTS or DTS:X signal, a supported receiver can detect it and engage a mode such as IMAX DTS or IMAX DTS:X.
The receiver processes the soundtrack; it does not create an IMAX mix or turn an ordinary movie into IMAX Enhanced content. The picture component is handled separately by the source and a compatible television or projector.

IMAX Enhanced in plain English
IMAX Enhanced combines specially prepared content with certified playback equipment. The program covers both picture and sound and is jointly associated with IMAX and DTS. Content may include an IMAX-remastered image and a DTS-based soundtrack, commonly DTS:X for supported titles.

On a receiver, the important part is the audio signal. The receiver decodes a qualifying DTS bitstream and applies the model’s IMAX-specific processing. It does not supply the IMAX picture by itself.
For the official program description, see DTS’s IMAX Enhanced overview and DTS’s explanation of the ecosystem.
Is IMAX Enhanced a sound format?
Not exactly. IMAX Enhanced is a certification, mastering and distribution program rather than a standalone audio codec equivalent to Dolby Atmos or DTS:X.
- DTS:X is an object-based immersive-audio format.
- IMAX Enhanced is a broader content-and-device ecosystem.
- IMAX DTS:X describes DTS:X content being reproduced with an IMAX-specific presentation mode.
An IMAX Enhanced soundtrack may use DTS:X or another DTS-based format, depending on the title and platform. Ordinary DTS:X content is not automatically IMAX Enhanced.
What does the receiver actually do?
The receiver sits between the source and the speakers. When it receives compatible content, it can:
- identify and decode the incoming DTS or DTS:X bitstream;
- select an IMAX-specific listening mode;
- apply model-dependent filtering, crossover or bass-management behavior;
- route the soundtrack to the speakers configured in your system; and
- display a label such as IMAX DTS, IMAX DTS:X or another manufacturer-specific indication.
Some Denon receivers document separate IMAX DTS and IMAX DTS:X modes. On supported models, these modes can be selected automatically when the appropriate signal is detected. The exact behavior and available controls vary by model and firmware; consult the Denon AVRX6800H documentation or your receiver’s manual.
Some Denon models expose additional IMAX settings only after native IMAX Enhanced content is being decoded. These may include IMAX enable/disable options and frequency-filter or bass-management controls. They are not universal receiver settings.

What the receiver does not do
An IMAX Enhanced receiver cannot add authentic IMAX treatment to every movie. It cannot convert Dolby Atmos, stereo PCM or an ordinary DTS:X track into an IMAX Enhanced soundtrack. If the source does not deliver qualifying content, the receiver has no IMAX-specific mix to reproduce.
Likewise, the receiver normally does not control the IMAX picture mode. A compatible display may provide a separate IMAX Enhanced picture setting, while the receiver handles the audio. Sony describes these as separate functions: the television’s IMAX Enhanced mode affects picture quality, while the receiver uses DTS:X processing for sound. See Sony’s support explanation.
What you need for it to work
| Component | What it contributes |
|---|---|
| Movie or show | A specially prepared IMAX Enhanced version and, where available, its qualifying soundtrack. |
| Streaming app or disc player | Delivery of the supported audio and video tracks for your title, region, language and device. |
| HDMI connection | Transmission of the required digital audio signal. Direct HDMI to the receiver is often the simplest arrangement. |
| AV receiver | DTS:X decoding and, preferably, IMAX Enhanced certification or an explicitly supported IMAX mode. |
| Speakers | Reproduction of the soundtrack. Height speakers can improve an immersive DTS:X presentation but are not a universal IMAX requirement. |
| TV or projector | The picture-side presentation, including an IMAX Enhanced picture mode where supported. |
Certification is recommended for the intended end-to-end experience, but it is not always mandatory for audio access. DTS says some DTS-enabled AV receivers may receive IMAX Enhanced sound from Disney+ when the source device, operating system, app and connection meet the service’s requirements. Basic DTS:X decoding and full certified ecosystem support are different things.
How to set up IMAX Enhanced
- Confirm the title. Look for an IMAX Enhanced badge or service-specific label. Do not assume that every title filmed or released in IMAX includes the feature.
- Use a suitable source path. Connect a streaming device or disc player to the receiver by HDMI where possible. If you use a television app, verify that the television and eARC connection can pass the required format.
- Enable bitstream or passthrough output. Avoid forcing stereo PCM if you want the receiver to decode DTS:X. Use the source’s Bitstream, Passthrough or Auto setting where available.
- Check receiver support. Confirm DTS:X support and, ideally, IMAX Enhanced support for the exact receiver model.
- Play the content. Leave the receiver on Auto, Direct or its native decoding setting rather than manually selecting an unrelated sound field.
- Check the receiver information display. Look for IMAX DTS, IMAX DTS:X or a comparable indication.
- Check the display separately. If the TV or projector supports an IMAX Enhanced picture mode, select it when the source and display identify the content as compatible.
Denon receivers
On supported Denon models, begin playback of native IMAX Enhanced content and confirm that the receiver is receiving a qualifying DTS or DTS:X bitstream. It may automatically select IMAX DTS or IMAX DTS:X. After native content is detected, open the receiver’s audio or surround parameters and look for the IMAX setting and any model-specific filtering or bass controls.
Denon’s support article explains how IMAX Enhanced settings become available. Menu names and controls differ across models.
Sony receivers and televisions
Sony’s instructions distinguish the receiver’s DTS:X sound processing from the television’s IMAX Enhanced picture mode. The precise menu path depends on the receiver and TV generation. Sony lists IMAX Enhanced support for products including the STR-AN1000 and other models, but specifications should be checked for the exact product.
How to tell whether it is working
Use several indicators rather than relying on one logo:
Rank #3
- IMAX ENHANCED MODE: IMAX digitally re–mastered content for the home environment is created to provide the same sharp 4K HDR images and powerful sound just as the filmmaker intended.
- SMART HOME COMPATIBLE WITH VOICE CONTROL: The Onkyo TX–NR7100 9.2–Channel THX Certified AV Receive easily integrates into your existing Smart Home ecosystem.
- BI–DIRECTIONAL BLUETOOTH WIRELESS TECHNOLOGY: Stream from your device to the receiver using SBC or AAC codecs, or transmit audio playing through the AVR to compatible wireless headphones.
- THX CERTIFIED: The TX–NR7100 offers four distinct THX listening modes: cinema, gaming, music, and surround EX.
- SMART AV RECEIVER: Works with Sonos, Chromecast built–in, AirPlay 2, and DTS Play–Fi; includes Spotify, Amazon Music HD, Pandora, TIDAL, Deezer, and TuneIn streaming services
- the streaming app or disc menu identifies the title or audio track as IMAX Enhanced;
- the source is outputting Bitstream or Passthrough rather than stereo PCM;
- the receiver’s information screen reports DTS:X, IMAX DTS:X or IMAX DTS;
- the television or projector offers and selects an IMAX Enhanced picture mode; and
- the receiver’s IMAX-specific parameters become available during playback.
If the receiver displays DTS:X but not IMAX DTS:X, surround audio may still be working. The source may be delivering DTS:X without the IMAX-specific flag, the content may be IMAX video only, or the receiver may support DTS:X without the separate IMAX mode. The exact display label is manufacturer-dependent.

The receiver shows DTS:X but not IMAX DTS:X
Check whether the title actually includes IMAX Enhanced audio. It may offer only the picture treatment, or the selected language track may not be the qualifying one. Other possibilities include a source device converting the signal, a receiver that supports DTS:X but not IMAX processing, missing metadata, unsupported firmware, or restrictions based on territory and platform.
The service shows IMAX Enhanced but the receiver gets stereo
- Use HDMI rather than optical output where possible.
- Set the source or TV audio output to Bitstream, Passthrough or Auto.
- Check that eARC is enabled if the signal travels from a TV app to the receiver.
- Verify that the TV’s internal app supports DTS:X output; not every TV app path does.
- Check the title, language, subscription, region and device requirements.
- Connect the source directly to the receiver if an older HDMI switch or soundbar is in the chain.
DTS specifically notes that Disney+ availability depends on title, territory, language, device and platform. Its IMAX Enhanced sound FAQ lists the applicable limitations.
The IMAX menu is missing
This can be normal. On some receivers, IMAX controls appear only while native IMAX Enhanced content is being decoded. The menu may also be absent because the model does not support the feature, the source is not sending a qualifying signal, or the manufacturer uses different terminology.
The receiver supports IMAX Enhanced but the TV does not
The receiver can still process compatible audio if the source path supports it. The TV, however, will not provide an IMAX-specific picture mode unless it supports that feature.
The TV supports IMAX Enhanced but the receiver does not
The display may still show the IMAX picture version. Audio will be limited by the source, receiver, soundbar and HDMI/eARC path. Picture certification and receiver audio certification are separate parts of the ecosystem.
Is IMAX Enhanced better than Dolby Atmos?
There is no universal winner. Dolby Atmos generally has broader market adoption, while IMAX Enhanced DTS:X can provide a distinctive presentation when the title, receiver and speaker system support it.

- 11 CHANNELS, 140 WATTS: Home theater buffs rejoice! The Onkyo TX-RZ70 is our most powerful AVR yet, giving you the power to design the ultimate entertainment space with discrete zones, multiple subwoofers, and high-performance components that won’t overheat or lag.
- STUDIO GRADE PROCESSING: Built by and for audiophiles, but intuitively built for the everyman. Utilizing the very latest audio technology including ESS Sabre DACs, THX Certification, and eARC functionality, the Onkyo TX-RZ70 overdelivers on premium home theater performance.
- DIRAC LIVE TECHNOLOGIES: You deserve an AVR that adapts to your life, not the other way around. With built-in Dirac Live Room Calibration Full Bandwidth, the Onkyo TX-RZ70 uses machine learning to perfectly adapt and calibrate your audio settings to your unique speaker system and room layout. And big bass fans will also be able to upgrade their system (firmware available June 2023) with Dirac Live Bass Control Single/Multi Subwoofer for optimal calibration of the lowest tones.
- IMAX ENHANCED MODE: Bring the theater experience to your home by recreating IMAX content just as filmmakers intended. The TX-RZ70 meets the precise quality standards established by IMAX to reduce noise and grain to produce brighter, clearer pictures, plus immersive sound for the ultimate cinema experience. IMAX Enhanced Mode also provides a stretched aspect ratio for up to 26% more picture on your screen.
- THX CERTIFIED: In 1993, Onkyo became the first consumer home theater electronics brand to be THX-certified, after thousands of tests. No matter what input is used, what combination of built-in features are used, what preamplifier or amplifier, there can be absolutely nothing added, nothing taken away from the source material. And the TX-RZ70 offers four distinct THX listening modes: cinema, gaming, music, and surround EX.
The audible result often depends more on the specific mix, speaker placement, room calibration, subwoofer integration and listening preference than on the logo. IMAX Enhanced is an additional capability, not a replacement for Dolby Atmos, DTS:X or a well-designed home theater.
Neural:X and Dolby Surround upmixers can expand ordinary tracks across additional speakers, but they are not equivalent to native IMAX Enhanced content. When a disc or stream already supplies a native immersive soundtrack, Auto or Direct decoding is usually the sensible starting point.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteShould you buy a receiver for IMAX Enhanced?
Choose it when you regularly watch available IMAX Enhanced titles, want DTS:X, plan to use height speakers, and have found a receiver that also meets your channel, HDMI, room-correction and power requirements. It is a useful bonus when the price difference from an otherwise comparable receiver is small.
Do not buy it solely for the badge if most of your content is Dolby Atmos or ordinary DTS:X, your room cannot accommodate additional speakers, your preferred streaming device cannot pass the signal, or the feature requires a large premium.
Prioritize these specifications first:
- Powered and preamp channels required by your speaker layout.
- HDMI input and output count.
- Support for your 4K/120, 8K, VRR and ALLM gaming needs.
- eARC behavior and source compatibility.
- Dolby Atmos and DTS:X support.
- Room correction and subwoofer integration.
- Speaker impedance, amplification and power requirements.
- Firmware-update history and streaming ecosystem.
- Price, warranty and return policy.
For example, Sony’s STR-AN1000 is a 7.2-channel receiver with IMAX Enhanced, DTS:X and current HDMI features, making it more appropriate for a straightforward system than a large multi-height-channel theater. Marantz offers higher-channel models such as the 9.4-channel CINEMA 40 and 11.4-channel CINEMA 30. Those products can suit larger systems, but their additional cost and channels are difficult to justify for a basic 5.1 or 5.1.2 room. Product prices and availability change, so verify current figures on the official Sony page and official Marantz receiver category.
The complete signal path matters
IMAX Enhanced works only as well as its weakest link:
content version → streaming service or disc player → app and device support → HDMI/eARC path → receiver decoding → speaker layout and calibration → display picture mode

A certified receiver cannot compensate for a title, region, app or connection that does not deliver the qualifying signal. Conversely, the absence of a certified display does not necessarily prevent compatible receiver audio.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a soundbar use IMAX Enhanced?
Some certified or DTS:X-capable soundbars may support the audio portion, but behavior depends on the specific model, source and service. Check the soundbar’s specifications rather than assuming that a DTS:X label means IMAX Enhanced support.
Can I use IMAX Enhanced with a 4K Blu-ray player?
Yes, where the disc contains an IMAX Enhanced track and the player and receiver can pass and decode its DTS-based bitstream over HDMI. Set the player to Bitstream or an equivalent passthrough mode.
Recommended Free Tools
Do I need height speakers?
No universal speaker layout is required. Height speakers can make immersive DTS:X content more convincing, but the receiver adapts output to the speakers configured in your system.
Can IMAX Enhanced be turned off?
Usually, yes, although the control depends on the receiver. Some models expose the IMAX setting only while compatible content is playing. You can generally choose another supported listening mode or disable the model’s IMAX option.
Is IMAX Enhanced available on Disney+ everywhere?
No. DTS says access can depend on the title, country or territory, language, device, operating system and app. Confirm availability for your exact setup.
