Snowbot S1 Could Be Your Own Snow-Blowing Robot—but the Current Yarbo System Has Caveats

Snowbot S1 was real, but the current product is Yarbo’s modular Core with a Snow Blower Module. Here are the price, setup requirements, limitations, and buying criteria.

Yes, an autonomous snow-blowing robot is a real, purchasable product. But Snowbot S1 is mainly the name of Yarbo’s earlier residential platform. The current U.S. product is generally sold as a Yarbo Core with a Snow Blower Module, rather than as a standalone Snowbot S1.

Yarbo’s system can clear mapped areas, return to its dock, recharge, and run scheduled work plans. It still requires site setup, RTK-GPS infrastructure, route maintenance, supervision, and suitable snow and terrain. Think of it as a mapped outdoor robot—not a completely unattended replacement for every snow blower.

What happened to Snowbot S1?

Yarbo introduced Snowbot S1 in 2021 as an autonomous residential snow blower and later referenced an S1 Plus iteration. The company says the platform evolved into Yarbo, a modular yard-robot system built around a reusable robotic Core and interchangeable attachments. Its company history and product history describe that progression.

That means older coverage can be confusing. Snowbot S1 is not automatically identical to every current Yarbo model. Today’s snow-clearing product is typically marketed as the Yarbo Snow Blower: a Yarbo Core fitted with the Snow Blower Module.

What you buy today

At the time of the supplied research, Yarbo’s official snow-blower page listed a bundled package at $4,999. Separate component pages listed the Yarbo Core at $3,999 and the Snow Blower Module at $1,299. Because bundle pricing and promotions can change—and the separate totals do not match the bundle price—check the exact contents, currency, shipping, taxes, and availability before ordering.

The bundle listing describes a package including the Core, Snow Blower Module, battery, tracks, dock, and accessories. The relevant pages are the Yarbo Snow Blower, Yarbo Core, and Snow Blower Module. Availability has shown limited-stock or pre-order signals on related pages, so “available” should be confirmed for the specific package.

What the robot is designed to do

Yarbo’s current materials describe a tracked, two-stage snow blower with app control and autonomous operation. Advertised capabilities include:

How navigation works

The robot is not simply following a boundary wire. The RTK-GPS system provides positioning through a base station and antenna, while cameras and other sensors assist with navigation and obstacle detection. You use the Yarbo app to create the operating map and work plans.

A practical route must connect the dock, pathway, and working area logically. The user manual explains that the app supports multiple working areas, no-go zones, work schedules, status monitoring, firmware updates, manuals, and tutorials. The map should begin at the docking station, and the route between the dock and work area must remain usable.

This infrastructure is central to the ownership experience. The robot needs a suitable dock location, an RTK base with a reasonably open view of the sky, reliable connectivity, and a driveway that can be mapped without constant changes.

What setup and ownership involve

  1. Select the package. Compare the bundled Yarbo Snow Blower with purchasing the Core and attachment separately.
  2. Install the dock. Place it where thrown snow will not bury or obscure it and where the robot can approach reliably.
  3. Set up RTK equipment. The RTK antenna should be installed outdoors in an appropriate open area—not indoors.
  4. Install the app. Create or sign in to a Yarbo account, pair the robot, and complete software setup.
  5. Map the property. Define the driveway, pathways, work areas, snow-throwing directions, and no-go zones.
  6. Test the route. Confirm that the robot can travel between the dock and the work area without steps, tight passages, or obstructions.
  7. Supervise initial jobs. Adjust maps and throwing directions after observing how the robot handles the actual site.
  8. Maintain the route. Remove toys, stones, branches, vehicles, pets, and other objects before operation.
  9. Monitor operation. Watch battery status, alerts, connectivity, weather, and the cleared result.

Automatic scheduling reduces repeated labor, but it does not eliminate property preparation or responsibility for safe operation.

The important snow limitation: 12 inches does not mean every 12-inch storm

Yarbo’s limitations documentation distinguishes sharply between snow types:

  • Dry snow: up to the advertised 12-inch limit under stated conditions.
  • Wet snow: effective depth below 4 inches.
  • Packed snow: effective depth below 4 inches.
  • Ice chunks: pieces larger than approximately 12 inches are outside the stated capability.

Stones and branches can also reduce clearing efficiency. A light, dry snowfall is a much more favorable assignment than heavy, wet snow compacted by vehicles or left to freeze overnight. The manufacturer also states that the battery is not sufficient to clear six parking spaces covered in approximately 12 inches of snow in one session.

Terrain and connectivity can decide whether it works

The system is best suited to a broad, open, relatively flat driveway. Yarbo’s limitations page identifies several difficult or unsupported conditions:

  • Driveway terrain-height changes above approximately 1.6 inches can cause problems.
  • The robot cannot clean steps.
  • The listed maximum snow-blowing slope is 20 degrees; the broader navigation limit is 35 degrees.
  • Paths narrower than 2 feet are unsupported.
  • Frozen snow surfaces can be difficult.
  • RTK performance can suffer near walls, tall buildings, ravines, hillsides, and forests.

Connectivity matters as well. If the robot loses internet connectivity or power, app access can be disrupted. Yarbo’s documentation also warns that automatic plans can be affected by unstable vendor-network connectivity.

Obstacle detection is not a substitute for supervision

The robot has cameras and obstacle detection, but the manufacturer does not describe universal recognition. The limitations documentation says effective obstacle-recognition distance is about 1.7 feet, while pedestrians may be detected at up to approximately 16.5 feet and trigger shutdown of the snow shovel and movement motors.

  • Two-Stage Technology: All-steel auger easily cuts through tough icy snow, and the high-speed steel impeller throws snow 45 ft away.

It also warns that obstacles below 18 inches may not be detected reliably and that the system may struggle with crouching people, small pets, scattered bushes, fences, and other dynamic or low obstacles. Dirt or contamination on the camera can further reduce recognition.

Do not operate it around children, pets, or unattended objects on the assumption that its safety sensors will always detect them. Clear the route and supervise operation, particularly during early use or whenever conditions change.

Docking and cold-weather edge cases

The robot cannot recharge without a configured docking station and cannot recharge from a no-go zone. Charging may not begin when the battery is below 5°C or above 40°C until it warms or cools. Yarbo recommends charging on the docking station below −20°C.

Dock placement therefore matters twice: it must be reachable by the robot, and it must remain visible and usable after snow is thrown. A dock positioned where the blower can bury it may turn an autonomous job into a manual recovery task.

Who is a good candidate?

The current Yarbo system makes the most sense for a homeowner who has:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A wide, relatively flat driveway or private paved area
  • Few or no steps and no narrow passageways
  • A predictable place to throw snow
  • A suitable location for the dock and RTK antenna
  • Reliable Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity
  • Frequent snowfall or a meaningful physical burden from manual clearing
  • The patience to map the property and supervise initial operation
  • Interest in using the Core with other attachments throughout the year

Yarbo promotes the Core as a year-round platform for multiple yard-care tasks, which can make the cost easier to justify than a single-purpose snow machine for some buyers.

Who should probably skip it?

Choose another solution if you have a small urban driveway, steps, narrow paths, heavy tree cover, frequent parked vehicles, gravel, many low obstacles, or irregular terrain. It is also a poor match for buyers who want the lowest-cost option, dislike app and connectivity troubleshooting, or expect a machine that can operate indefinitely without inspection.

Snow Joe IONMAX 48V Cordless Electric Snow Blower Machine, 24V-X2-SB18-GO
  • Cordless 48-Volt Power: Dual 24-volt IONMAX lithium batteries deliver 48-volt output for consistent cordless snow removal without gas, extension cords, pull starts, or routine engine maintenance
  • 18-Inch Clearing Width: Clears an 18-inch-wide by 10-inch-deep path to remove light to moderate snow from driveway, sidewalk, patio, deck, walkway, pathway, porch, pavement, and concrete
  • 1200-Watt Brushless Motor: High-efficiency brushless motor moves up to 700 pounds of snow per minute, handling fresh snowfall and light accumulation with reduced vibration and wear
  • 20-Foot Throw Distance: Adjustable 180-degree chute rotates for directional control and throws snow up to 20 feet, allowing targeted discharge placement away from cleared areas and edges
  • LED Light and Steel Auger: 2-watt LED headlight supports early morning and evening clearing while rubber-tipped steel auger and scraper bar clear close to pavement without surface damage

Regions dominated by wet, packed, or icy snow are less favorable than areas with frequent light, dry snowfall. If snow is occasional, a conventional blower or removal service may provide better value.

Yarbo versus the alternatives

Battery snow blower

A conventional battery blower costs far less, requires no RTK base or mapped route, and gives you immediate manual control. It is easier to take into unusual areas and generally more practical for steps or changing obstacles. Yarbo’s advantages are scheduled operation, remote monitoring, automatic docking, and reduced physical labor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gas snow blower

Gas machines remain a mature option for heavy or wet snow and do not depend on software, GPS, or network connectivity. Their drawbacks include fuel, maintenance, noise, exhaust, storage, and manual operation.

Snow-removal service

A service may be the better financial and practical choice when storms are infrequent, the driveway is difficult to map, or you want zero equipment maintenance. Yarbo becomes more attractive where repeated storms, mobility limitations, or a shortage of available labor make automation valuable.

Commercial autonomous systems

Snowbotix is a separate commercial-oriented platform offering autonomous snow, mowing, and sweeping through a robotics-as-a-service model. It targets sites such as campuses, airports, municipalities, resorts, and other large operations—not ordinary homeowner retail purchases.

Extra costs and ownership details

Yarbo also lists accessories such as a Snow Plow Blade at $159, Snow Track at $189, Snow Shovel at $29, and track grease at $49 on its official pages. These prices are time-sensitive and should be checked before publication or purchase. An optional extended warranty may provide up to five years of total coverage in supported regions, subject to the warranty terms.

The modular design is the strongest justification for a buyer who wants year-round automation. It is a weaker proposition if the robot will be used only a few times each winter and the owner has no interest in additional attachments.
