For the familiar upright houseplant, snake plant and mother-in-law’s tongue are two common names for the same species: Dracaena trifasciata. You are not choosing between two plants with different care needs. The useful distinctions are the cultivar, the plant’s shape and markings, and whether its care requirements and pet-toxicity risk suit your home.

Why do the names differ?

Kew lists “snake plant” and “mother-in-law’s tongue” as common names for Dracaena trifasciata. The plant is also widely sold and described under the older horticultural name Sansevieria trifasciata. Kew explains that DNA sequencing led to its placement in the genus Dracaena in 2017, while the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) still profiles it as Sansevieria trifasciata and gives Dracaena trifasciata as a synonym. That is why both botanical labels turn up in plant guides and listings. Kew RHS plant profile

Common names are not perfectly exclusive: they can be applied to more than one plant. When comparing the familiar houseplant, check the botanical name rather than assuming every plant sold as “mother-in-law’s tongue” is this exact species.

What should you compare when buying one?

Compare the plant itself, not the common name on its label. RHS notes that cultivars vary in shape, size and color. Check the cultivar name where supplied, the mature form you want, and whether the individual plant appears healthy. If a listing uses “Sansevieria,” look for Sansevieria trifasciata or its accepted name, Dracaena trifasciata; the label alone does not establish which cultivar you will receive.

Kew describes the species as having thick, sword-shaped, banded leaves and underground roots. It says houseplants usually stay below one metre, while plants in the wild can reach two metres. The RHS profile gives a maximum height range of 1–1.5 metres. These are source descriptions of potential size, not guaranteed indoor outcomes; the individual cultivar and growing conditions matter. Do the names mean different care?

No. If the labels refer to Dracaena trifasciata, the name does not create a separate care requirement. RHS describes sansevierias as tolerant of bright through low light and low humidity. It gives a typical home temperature range of 15–24°C (60–75°F), advises against overwatering, and recommends free-draining, peat-free cactus compost. Water when the compost starts to dry rather than keeping it continually wet. RHS growing guide

Is snake plant safe around pets?

No. The ASPCA lists snake plant (Sansevieria trifasciata), also called mother-in-law’s tongue, as toxic to cats and dogs. It identifies saponins as the toxic principle and lists nausea, vomiting and diarrhea as possible clinical signs. Keep the plant where pets cannot chew it, or choose another plant if your pets are likely to eat foliage. If ingestion is suspected, contact a veterinarian or the ASPCA’s poison-control service. Does it improve indoor air or sleep?

Kew cautions against treating a snake plant as a meaningful way to improve ordinary household air or sleep. Its profile notes: “While higher oxygen concentrations have been shown to help improve sleep quality, you’d need to fill your room with snake plants to gain any noticeable benefit!” That qualification does not support a claim that one or a few plants deliver a noticeable benefit in a typical room.
