The Smeg appliance behind the “forget air fryers” headline is the Smeg MOC02: a 27-litre freestanding combination microwave with microwave, grill, fan-assisted oven and air-fry functions. It is a useful space-saving option for small kitchens and modest portions, but its premium price and compact cavity mean it is not a universal replacement for a dedicated air fryer or full-size oven.
The short verdict
Buy the MOC02 if you want one design-led appliance to handle reheating, defrosting, grilling, baking, roasting and occasional air frying. It is particularly appealing where counter space is limited or where buying several separate appliances would be inconvenient.

The MOC02 can cover many air-fryer and small-oven jobs, but it has less practical air-frying space than a dedicated basket appliance and cannot match a full-size oven for large dishes, multiple shelves or family-sized cooking.
Smeg’s official product page lists nine cooking functions, 25 automatic recipes, a 27-litre cavity and a maximum temperature of 240°C.

What the Smeg MOC02 actually does
The MOC02 is not a microwave with a separate drawer-style air fryer built into it. Its air-fry setting operates within a heated-air cooking system, alongside the fan-assisted/convection function and the appliance’s dedicated accessories.
Its listed functions include:
- Microwave cooking, reheating and defrosting
- Quartz grilling and browning
- Fan-assisted/convection cooking for baking and roasting
- Air frying for foods such as chips, vegetables and wings
- Microwave-plus-grill cooking
- Microwave-plus-convection cooking
- Convection-plus-grill cooking
- Multi-stage cooking
The automatic recipes cover meat and poultry, fish and shellfish, vegetables and side dishes, cakes and sweets, and bread, pizza and pies. Multi-step programmes can combine different cooking methods, although the presence of one combination mode does not mean every function can be paired with every other function.

These figures come from the official MOC02 specification. Check the manual for exact installation, ventilation and clearance requirements rather than assuming the external measurements alone determine where it can safely sit.
Can it replace a standalone air fryer?
For some households, yes; for frequent air-fryer users, probably not. The MOC02 can perform many of the same broad tasks, particularly cooking small portions of chips, vegetables, breaded foods and chicken. Its advantage is that the same appliance can also microwave, grill and bake.

- Air-fry large portions frequently
- Want two-zone or dual-basket cooking
- Need to cook different foods simultaneously
- Prefer to remove and shake a basket during cooking
- Value a simpler appliance that is easier to clean
- Already own a capable microwave and oven
Air-frying also depends heavily on loading. Overcrowding, wet food and restricted airflow can lead to soft rather than crisp results. The 27-litre headline describes the whole cavity, not 27 litres of practical basket space. Use small batches where necessary and follow the manual’s instructions for the supplied accessories and turning food.
There is no independent evidence in the available coverage proving that the MOC02 crisps food identically to, or better than, a dedicated air fryer. Its strongest argument is versatility and reduced appliance clutter, not guaranteed superior air-frying performance.
Can it replace a full-size oven?
The MOC02 is best understood as a compact oven alternative. Its fan-assisted heating and stated 240°C maximum temperature make it suitable for individual meals, small trays, sides, compact bakes and modest roasting jobs.
Its limitations are equally important:
- The 28cm turntable limits the diameter of round cookware.
- A 27-litre cavity is not equivalent to a full-size oven.
- Large roasting tins, family-sized meals and multiple shelves may not fit.
- Microwave-safe cookware may not be safe for convection or grill temperatures.
- Air-fry accessories and racks can reduce the usable height and width further.
It may replace many small-oven tasks for one or two people, but it will not replace a full-size oven for large roasts, several trays or simultaneous cooking.
MOC02 versus the cheaper MOC01
The Smeg MOC01 is not simply a smaller version of the same machine. It has a slightly larger 29-litre capacity and 18 automatic recipes, but its verified functions are microwave cooking and grilling. It does not have the MOC02’s verified fan-assisted oven or air-fry functions.

Smeg UK listed the MOC01 from £349.95 and the MOC02 from £449.95 on its freestanding-microwave collection. The £100 difference buys the additional oven and air-fry capability, not a larger cavity.
Choose the MOC01 if you mainly want an attractive microwave with browning capability. Choose the MOC02 if appliance consolidation is the reason for buying.

The MOE34CXIUK is a different Smeg combination microwave. It has a stainless-steel Universal design, 34 litres of usable capacity and microwave, grill, fan-assisted and pizza functions. Smeg’s UK information lists 1,100W microwave effective power and 1,100W grill power.
It offers more cavity space than the MOC02, but the inspected official listing does not verify a dedicated air-fry programme. Do not assume that every Smeg combination microwave has air-frying capability.

It is the more logical option if oven capacity matters more than the MOC02’s Collezione styling and explicitly named air-fry mode.

Price, availability and regional compatibility
As checked on 16 August 2026, Smeg UK listed the MOC02 from £449.95, in matte white, matte black, matte storm blue and matte emerald green. Availability can change: an earlier launch report described a waitlist, while the current Smeg UK collection lists the model in its range. Check live stock, colour, delivery and price before ordering.
The verified model is a UK/Singapore version rated for 230–240V, 50Hz with a Type G plug. It should not be presented as a straightforward US purchase. A plug adapter does not solve a voltage mismatch; US shoppers need a properly compatible regional model and appropriate electrical guidance.
Who should buy the MOC02?
It makes sense if you:
- Have limited counter space.
- Need a microwave but also want compact oven and air-fry functions.
- Mostly cook small portions.
- Prefer Smeg’s design and accept the premium.
- Want microwave-plus-convection or microwave-plus-grill cooking in one machine.
- Would otherwise buy several separate countertop appliances.
Choose something else if you:
- Want the cheapest route to crisp food.
- Already own a good microwave and full-size oven.
- Regularly cook large air-fryer batches or family-sized trays.
- Need a removable dishwasher-friendly basket or dual-zone cooking.
- Prioritise maximum cavity space over appearance.
Important practical cautions
Use only accessories suitable for the selected cooking mode. A container marked microwave-safe may not withstand a 240°C convection programme or direct grilling. Wide or tall cookware can also interfere with the turntable, rack, fan or door.
