Dyson PencilWash is the better choice for compact, everyday hard-floor cleaning—but it is not the best Dyson wet cleaner for every home. Its slim 4.9-pound design, 30-minute runtime and 1,076-square-foot claimed coverage make it appealing for smaller homes, quick spill cleanup and easy storage. For larger floor areas or less hands-on maintenance, Dyson’s Clean+Wash Hygiene is the stronger option; WashG1 can also make more sense when discounted.
Dyson announced PencilWash on February 19, 2026, and said US sales would begin March 17. Dyson’s US product page showed a promotional price of $249.99, reduced from $349.99, when checked on August 18, 2026. However, Dyson’s wider floor-cleaner page also showed it as out of stock, so confirm both price and availability before buying.

What is Dyson PencilWash?
PencilWash is a dedicated wet-and-dry cleaner for hard floors. Dyson says it can collect dry debris and wet spills in one pass, using controlled water delivery, a motorized wet roller and extraction that removes dirty liquid and debris from the roller.
It is designed for tiles, vinyl, laminate, marble and sealed wood. That does not mean it is suitable for every wood or stone finish: check the flooring manufacturer’s instructions before using any wet cleaner.

Unlike Dyson’s V15s Detect Submarine, PencilWash is not a complete vacuum system and is not intended to replace a carpet vacuum. It can plausibly replace a mop for suitable hard floors, but mixed-floor homes may still need a separate vacuum.

Why PencilWash could be better for everyday cleaning
The main advantage is ergonomics, not proven cleaning superiority. Dyson lists a 1.5-inch handle, a 4.9-pound total weight and 0.84 pounds of in-hand weight. The machine is self-propelled, can lie flat to 170 degrees and is designed to reach beneath furniture as low as 6 inches.

- Frequent messes: Its format suits kitchen spills, tracked-in dirt, crumbs and dining-area cleanup.
- Furniture access: The low-profile design may be more useful around chair legs and beneath sofas.
- Quick sessions: A smaller machine is less cumbersome when the job is a few rooms rather than an entire large floor.
Those specifications support a handling advantage. They do not establish that PencilWash cleans more thoroughly than WashG1 or Clean+Wash Hygiene; Dyson’s performance and hygiene statements remain manufacturer claims unless independently tested.

The 1,076-square-foot figure is Dyson’s stated coverage, not a guarantee that every home of that size can be cleaned on one charge. Actual coverage depends on the mode, water usage, number of passes and type of mess. Runtime and usable cleaning capacity are not the same thing.
PencilWash versus Dyson Clean+Wash Hygiene
This is the most important comparison. Clean+Wash Hygiene is larger and heavier, but it offers substantially more capacity and a more automated maintenance system.

Clean+Wash Hygiene is the better choice for larger homes, longer cleaning sessions and buyers who want the machine to do more of its post-cleaning work. Dyson advertises a self-clean cycle, anti-tangle handling for hair and a dock that dries the roller with 185°F air. PencilWash is more attractive when low weight, maneuverability and storage matter more than tank capacity and automated drying.

Do not interpret “filter-free” or fresh-water roller washing as maintenance-free ownership. With either machine, expect to empty dirty water, remove debris and care for rollers and other wet components.

PencilWash versus WashG1
WashG1 remains a credible alternative for buyers who want a dedicated cleaner for larger hard-floor areas. Its original launch information cited a 27-ounce clean-water tank and claimed coverage of up to 3,100 square feet. Its current product page lists up to 35 minutes of runtime.
- PencilWash: lighter, slimmer and better suited to short, frequent cleaning.
- WashG1: larger-area design with two counter-rotating motorized microfiber rollers.
- PencilWash: lower launch price of $349, with a $249.99 promotional price reported on Dyson’s US page.
- WashG1: three hydration levels plus MAX mode and a self-clean cycle taking approximately 140 seconds.
WashG1 launched at $699.99, although its current sale price should be checked directly. If it is heavily discounted, it may be the better dedicated cleaner for a larger home. The 3,100-square-foot coverage figure comes from launch material and should be treated as a stated or simulated result, not guaranteed real-world coverage.

The V15s Detect Submarine is not simply a larger PencilWash. It is a cordless vacuum bundled with a separate wet-cleaning head. It includes Dyson’s Digital Motorbar for carpets and dry floors, a Fluffy Optic head and other accessories, plus the Submarine wet roller head.
Dyson’s own floor-cleaner guidance says to vacuum hard floors with the Motorbar first and then switch to the Submarine head. That creates a two-stage workflow: vacuum, change heads and wet-clean. A dedicated cleaner such as PencilWash, WashG1 or Clean+Wash Hygiene is designed around wet-and-dry hard-floor cleaning in one machine.
- Choose V15s Submarine if you need one cordless system for carpets, dry vacuuming and occasional wet cleaning.
- Choose PencilWash if washing hard floors is the main task and you want a simpler, more compact routine.
The V15s is the more versatile appliance, but at $1,049.99 on the US listing checked August 18, 2026—and shown out of stock—it is not the obvious value choice for someone primarily seeking a floor washer.

What to check before buying PencilWash
- Confirm stock and price. Dyson’s PencilWash page showed a promotion while its wider floor-cleaner page showed an out-of-stock message.
- Measure your floor area. The 1,076-square-foot claim may not match your actual cleaning pattern, especially at higher water settings.
- Check the floor finish. Dyson lists sealed wood, but unsealed, waxed or manufacturer-restricted floors may not be suitable.
- Plan for maintenance. You will still need to empty tanks, remove debris and clean or dry wet components.
- Allow for charging. PencilWash is listed with a 3.5-hour charge time.
- Do not count on it for carpets. A separate vacuum remains necessary in carpeted or mixed-floor homes.
- Check replacement-part availability. Dyson lists PencilWash support and replacement parts, but confirm that any roller, cleaner head or solution is for the exact US configuration.
Verdict
PencilWash is probably Dyson’s best wet cleaner for a smaller, mainly hard-floor home where lightweight handling and compact storage matter most. Its design may make routine cleaning easier to start and less tiring to finish.
It is not automatically better than Dyson’s other wet cleaners. Clean+Wash Hygiene is the more complete machine for larger homes and automated roller maintenance, while WashG1 may be the better large-area bargain if its current price is low enough. The V15s Detect Submarine is the right choice only when carpet and dry vacuuming are as important as wet cleaning.
In short: buy PencilWash for convenience and maneuverability; buy Clean+Wash Hygiene for capacity and maintenance automation; consider WashG1 for discounted large-area cleaning; and choose V15s Submarine for all-in-one vacuum versatility.
