Simple Paint Weathering in 3 Easy Steps

Use metallic drybrushing to highlight worn edges, then a diluted black wash to bring out grime in seams and recesses.

Give a model or 3D-printed project a worn, handled look with a basecoat, metallic drybrushing on raised edges, and a diluted black wash in the recesses. The three-step recipe comes from Jason Babler’s 2013 Make: tutorial; selective larger chips are an optional detail within the paint-and-wash steps.

What you need

  • A basecoat suitable for your model’s material
  • Metallic hobby paint
  • Black acrylic paint for a wash
  • A brush for drybrushing and a thin detail brush
  • Paper towel and a spare surface for testing brush load

A purpose-made drybrush is convenient, but Babler notes that an old brush can be cut flat and used instead. His tutorial names Krylon Fusion spray paint for the plastic basecoat and Citadel Chainmail as his personal metallic preference; those are examples from 2013, not required or guaranteed-current products. [Make: tutorial]

Step 1: Apply a basecoat

Choose a base color and apply it in a way that suits the material and the paint. Let it dry fully before adding weathering. In Babler’s example, he used bright red Krylon Fusion on plastic and skipped primer; that is a project-specific choice, not a general instruction to omit primer. For model kits, Humbrol advises working over a hard-dry base, building effects in stages, and testing a small area first. [Humbrol weathering guidance]

Step 2: Drybrush raised edges with metallic paint

  1. Load a brush lightly with metallic paint.
  2. Wipe most of the paint onto a paper towel until the brush appears nearly dry. Test it on a spare surface; it should leave a faint mark, not a solid coat.
  3. With a light touch, skim the brush over edges, corners, and raised details that would plausibly rub against other objects or be handled.

As Babler puts it, “Drybrushing means exactly that: the brush should not be wet with paint, it needs to have barely any paint on it.” The small amount of paint catches high points while leaving most of the basecoat visible. Humbrol describes the same raised-detail effect as a use for drybrushing. [Make: tutorial] [Humbrol weathering guidance]

  • 【Rust & Weathering Model Paint Set】Professional acrylic weathering effect paints designed for scale models, miniatures, vehicles, terrain, dioramas and 3D prints. This 10-color set helps create realistic rust, stains, streaking, dirt, aging and worn surface effects, adding more depth and story to model projects.
  • 【10 Weathering Colors + Thinner】Includes 10 acrylic weathering effect colors and 1 acrylic thinner. Each 20ml dropper bottle gives precise control, cleaner mixing and less waste. The included thinner helps adjust intensity, improve flow, soften transitions and create washes, filters, streaks and blended weathering effects.
  • 【Realistic Rust, Dirt & Streaking Effects】Great for building layered rust, dirty edges, rain marks, oil stains, dusty surfaces, aged metal and worn details. Use on tanks, aircraft, model cars, mecha, weapons, armor, engines, tracks, buildings, rocks, wood, mud and battlefield terrain for a more realistic finish.
  • 【Brush-Ready & Airbrush Compatible】Ready to use for brush painting straight from the bottle. Apply directly for stronger weathering effects, or thin as needed for softer stains, subtle aging, streaking lines, glaze/filter effects and airbrush use. Suitable for beginners while giving advanced painters more control over layered effects.
  • 【Made for Models, Terrain & Dioramas】Works on plastic, resin, metal, wood, PVC figures, 3D prints and other clean, dry hobby surfaces. Perfect for scale vehicles, tabletop miniatures, sci-fi models, fantasy figures, industrial terrain, abandoned machinery and diorama scenes. Primer is recommended on very smooth materials for stronger adhesion.

Keep the marks selective. Concentrate on believable contact points rather than brushing every edge equally; too much metallic paint can make a model look uniformly silvered instead of worn.

Step 3: Add selective chips and a black grime wash

Paint a few larger chips

For more obvious scrapes, use a thin detail brush to place a small number of deliberate marks where the surface might plausibly be struck or scraped. Treat these as accents rather than a pattern scattered across the whole model.

Let a diluted wash settle into recesses

  1. Thin black acrylic paint with water until it flows easily; begin with a small amount and test it on an inconspicuous spot.
  2. Touch the wash into seams, corners, and other recesses, allowing it to run into the low areas.
  3. Adjust the strength while it is still workable: dab away some wash with a clean brush or paper towel for a subtle effect, or leave more in place for stronger grime.

The wash darkens recessed areas, while drybrushing highlights raised ones. Together they create contrast that suggests dirt in creases and wear on exposed edges. Babler’s recipe uses a DIY diluted acrylic wash; premixed weathering washes are another option, but follow the product’s instructions and test compatibility with the existing finish. Humbrol distinguishes enamel washes intended for grime, oil stains, and wear from powders intended for dust and dirt. Its listed enamel washes dry in 10 to 20 minutes, a product-specific figure rather than a general paint-drying time. [Humbrol weathering guidance]

Control the finish and protect loose effects

  • Too much metallic paint: Wipe more paint from the brush and use lighter, more selective strokes.
  • Wash looks too dark: Lift some away before it dries, especially from broad flat areas.
  • Wash does not stay in recesses: Apply it sparingly and let capillary flow do the work rather than coating the whole surface.
  • Using weathering powders: They can suggest dust and dirt, but unfixed powder can rub off; fix it if the model will be handled. [Airfix weathering-powder guidance]

Weathering is not limited to metallic edge wear and grime: the effect should suit the material and intended appearance. Official Warhammer Community examples include armour chipping, rust, and verdigris. [Warhammer Community weathering examples]
