You can make a backyard feel more welcoming without taking on a major renovation. Start with one spot you use—or notice—most, then choose an upgrade that fits the space, light, drainage, budget, and upkeep you can manage. A refreshed patio, a few containers, or a better-planned garden bed can be worthwhile; none requires pretending every yard needs the same project.
Choose a project that fits your yard
Before buying materials, take a photo of the area you want to improve. Note what already works, what feels frustrating, how people move through the space, and whether the area is sunny, shaded, wet, or dry. Penn State Extension recommends choosing garden tasks with your budget, style, and available time in mind. Its low-cost refresh ideas include reused accessories, an outdoor rug, and mood lighting.
- Materials and effort: Decide whether you want a quick change or are prepared to build, plant, or move soil.
- Footprint and surface: A narrow patio may suit containers or vertical planting; an open area may have room for a bed or path.
- Growing conditions: Match plants to the light, soil, and local climate rather than choosing by appearance alone.
- Upkeep: Consider watering, pruning, replenishing materials, and seasonal cleanup before committing.
- Safety and water: Keep walking routes clear and consider where rainwater will flow before changing surfaces or grading.
There is no shared cost basis for these projects, so a reliable price ranking is not possible. Get local prices for the materials you need and compare projects against your own time and maintenance limits.
Refresh a patio or seating area
Reuse accessories and add a rug
Rearrange what you already own, or look for secondhand planters and outdoor accessories to give a sitting area a more finished look. An outdoor rug can add color and define a seating zone on a sound patio or deck. It is a visual upgrade—not a fix for a damaged surface, structural problem, or water issue.

Add decorative lighting
Solar landscape lights or another mood-lighting option can make an outdoor area feel more inviting after dark. Treat them as decorative additions: the cited guidance does not establish a particular brightness, runtime, weather resistance, or safety performance. Check product specifications for your intended use, and do not rely on decorative lights where dependable visibility is needed.
Grow plants in a small space
Use containers where ground space is limited
Containers can bring flowers, herbs, or other suitable plants to a patio, stoop, or balcony. Choose plants for the actual amount of sun and the temperature exposure of that spot; a bright, hot surface and a shaded corner call for different choices. Grow upward without blocking the route
A suitable fence, trellis, or other secure support can provide vertical growing space while leaving more floor area open. Make sure the support is appropriate for the plants and securely installed, and keep paths clear of hoses, tools, and containers so people can move through safely. Start with the conditions you have: existing soil, available light, and the space plants will occupy as they grow. Local extension services can help identify plants suited to your region and site. Mulch and water thoughtfully
University of Minnesota Extension recommends applying 2 to 3 inches of organic mulch to conserve moisture and protect roots. Its yard and garden watering guidance also recommends deep, less frequent watering. Adjust watering to local weather, soil, and plant needs rather than treating a schedule as universal.
Oregon State University Extension Service reported that following its combined water-efficient landscaping guidelines can reduce landscape water use by 35 to 75 percent. That 2022 range applies to the guidelines as a whole; it is not a guaranteed saving from mulch or any single backyard project.

Collect rainwater for outdoor use
A rain barrel connected to a downspout can collect roof runoff for garden watering and outdoor cleaning. The right storage size depends on local rainfall, roof catchment, expected use, available budget, and preference; Oregon State University Extension Service’s rainwater harvesting guide explains the basic considerations.
Barrel water is untreated. Penn State Extension says it should not be used for drinking, cooking, or other household tasks that require potable water. Before setting up a barrel, plan where overflow will go and check local rules and site conditions. In a 2026 article about a homeowner’s rain barrel, Penn State notes that savings were difficult to measure because water bills and rates vary; do not assume a particular dollar saving.

Improve paths and manage runoff carefully
Consider permeable surfaces
For a patio or walkway project, permeable materials may help water soak into the ground rather than run off a solid surface. Oregon State University Extension Service includes permeable patios and walkways in its water-efficient landscape guidance. Whether a particular material and installation suit your yard depends on the site; do not assume that replacing a surface alone resolves a drainage problem.
Assess whether a rain garden fits
A rain garden is a planted basin that temporarily collects runoff and lets it seep into the soil. Its success depends on placement, soil, vegetation, and a safe path for excess water. Oregon State University Extension Service’s rain garden guidance describes these site-specific considerations. For major grading, persistent drainage problems, or runoff near a structure, seek local guidance instead of relying on a generic DIY plan.
Account for wildfire risk where relevant
If your property is in a wildfire-prone area, landscaping choices and their distance from structures matter. Follow local fire guidance for your area rather than assuming a general planting recipe applies everywhere. Oregon State University Extension horticulturist Amy Jo Detweiler, lead author of its fire-resistant landscape guidance, said: “The idea of creating a fire-wise landscape is starting the landscape farther from the home and thinking about plant materials that will be less flammable. You think about placement, design and the plants you’re putting in the landscape.” OSU Extension’s article discusses that approach.
