Silicone Molds for Stove-Top Metal Casting: Alloys, Temperature and Safety

Purpose-made silicone can work for some low-melting metal casting, but compatibility depends on the alloy’s casting temperature and the mold’s specific heat rating.

Yes—purpose-made silicone rubber can be used to cast certain low-melting metals, such as tin-bismuth alloys and some pewter, but an ordinary silicone mold is not automatically suitable. Match the exact alloy’s recommended casting temperature to the mold maker’s stated heat limit, and keep the mold, metal, tools and work area completely dry.

What makes a silicone mold suitable for metal?

“Silicone” is not a temperature rating. Use mold-making rubber explicitly intended for metal casting, then check whether its published limit is for brief pouring exposure or continuous heat. Zinn-Gießerei Göhler explains that heat resistance depends on the material; its Silicone Rubber HB is described as temporarily resistant up to 450°C, while its guide distinguishes that short exposure from a 400°C load rating. Those figures apply to that specific product, not silicone rubber generally. See Göhler’s casting guide and its Silicone Rubber HB product information.

Compare the mold’s stated limit with the alloy’s recommended casting temperature—not merely its melting point. The metal is usually heated above the point at which it first melts to make it pourable. Confirm the actual composition and supplier instructions for both materials before beginning; broad labels such as “pewter,” “fishing tackle alloy” or “high-temperature silicone” do not establish compatibility. Adafruit likewise advises checking the metal and silicone datasheets against each other and avoiding lead-containing alloys. Adafruit’s low-melt alloy guide was last edited in 2024.

These examples come from different suppliers and are not interchangeable specifications. Treat them as a reason to check the exact product data, not as a universal list of safe pairings.

Alloy or metal Temperature information reported Practical consideration
BiSn42, 58% bismuth / 42% tin Melting point 138°C (281°F), reported by Göhler and Adafruit, respectively Göhler describes BiSn42 as suitable for small parts but brittle; thin sections may break if bent. Göhler casting guide; Adafruit guide.
Pure tin Melts just below 232°C, according to Göhler Verify the supplier’s recommended casting temperature for the specific product. Göhler casting guide.
Sn95Sb3Cu2 Göhler lists a melting range up to 248°C and a casting temperature of 300°C Use the casting temperature, rather than the lower melting-range figure, when checking mold compatibility. Göhler casting guide.
Sn98Sb2 Göhler recommends casting at 280–300°C Compare this range with the exact mold’s short-term pouring rating. Göhler casting guide.
R98 pewter Melts around 260°C, according to Formlabs “Pewter” covers products with differing compositions and thermal behavior; check the alloy product data. Formlabs’ metal-casting guide.
WM80 Göhler recommends a casting temperature of 450–520°C Göhler reports that this alloy contains 2% lead and says it is not a good choice for its heat-resistant silicone mold. Göhler casting guide.

Do not infer safety from the fact that an alloy melts on a stove. The alloy’s casting temperature, lead content, finished-part properties and the mold’s heat rating all matter. For example, the cited BiSn42 is relatively low-melting but brittle, so thin finished sections may not tolerate bending.

Choose a mold design that can fill cleanly

A one-sided open cavity can leave the casting with an open or misshapen face. A two-part mold can capture detail on both sides, but its parting line, gate (the channel metal enters through) and vents (paths for displaced air) need to suit the model. The model’s shape determines whether a simple open mold is adequate or a multi-part design is needed.

Nelyrho 50 Troy Ounce Cast Iron Ingot Mold with Handle for Metal Casting
  • Specification: Casting mold Holds up to 50 troy ounces of gold. Overall dimensions: 6.5 × 1.8 × 1.7 inches (L × W × H)
  • Wide Application: Suitable for casting, melting and refining of non-ferrous metals such as gold, silver, copper, aluminum, and brass
  • Release Tip: Wait for cooling before demolding as metal expands slightly at high temperatures and naturally shrinks after cooling, allowing the ingot to release easily without forceful tapping
  • Easy Handling & Ingot Removal: 4 raised feet elevate the mold from the work surface, while the 2.6-inch handle provides a secure grip. Slightly tapered side walls and two raised points help release cooled ingots more easily
  • Usage Tips: Heat the ingot mold before first use to remove the protective rust-prevention coating. When removing cooled ingots, avoid striking the mold forcefully against hard surfaces to help prevent damage

Follow the rubber manufacturer’s curing and preparation instructions. Göhler says its newly made molds should rest for about three days before first use. Its guide recommends a completely dry cavity and dusting it with talcum powder as a release and flow aid; do not assume those instructions apply to other mold rubbers. Consult the Göhler casting guide and the relevant Smooth-On product information for product-specific requirements.

Prepare and pour with moisture and heat under control

  1. Confirm compatibility. Read the exact alloy composition and recommended casting temperature, then compare it with the mold rubber’s stated short-term and continuous heat limits. Use a temperature-measuring device as the alloy supplier or equipment instructions require.
  2. Set up a dry work area. Keep the casting surface, mold, tools, equipment and metal dry. Do not pour near water or onto wet material; moisture can flash into steam and eject molten metal.
  3. Use protective equipment and ventilation. Wear eye protection, heat-insulating, nonflammable gloves, protective clothing, long sleeves, long pants and closed-toe shoes. Work outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, following the alloy and heating-equipment instructions. Princeton’s makerspace guidance and Formlabs’ casting guide provide additional safety guidance.
  4. Pour only as directed. Keep hands and face out of the likely path of splashes, and do not exceed the casting temperature or mold limit. Do not cool the mold or molten metal with water while metal remains liquid.
  5. Let the casting become solid before handling. Follow the alloy and equipment suppliers’ directions for cooling and demolding; keep water away until the metal is no longer liquid.

When to choose another process

Do not use silicone when the alloy’s recommended casting temperature exceeds the mold’s applicable rating, when the mold maker does not specify suitability for metal, or when the alloy composition and lead content are unknown. Choose a different mold material or casting method rated for the material and temperature instead. A low melting point by itself does not establish that a particular mold, stove or work setup is suitable.
