Shrewsbury Castle’s conservation has two distinct strands: urgent safety work on the historic wall beside the Dana footpath, and longer-term planning for the site’s future. Shropshire Council’s latest located notices, dated December 2025, described temporary removal of four unstable crenellation sections and main repairs planned for 2026. They do not confirm that those repairs are now complete or that the footpath has reopened.
Why Shrewsbury Castle needs careful conservation
Shrewsbury Castle is a Grade I listed building. Historic England describes its surviving fabric as largely dating from the late twelfth century to around 1300, with later alterations and restorations. Much of it is red sandstone, and the site includes the inner bailey wall, gateway and main hall. The curtain wall was built in phases between 1164 and 1300; parts of its walkway and crenellations survive.

The main hall was begun in 1164, enlarged in 1300 and 1596, and re-fenestrated by Thomas Telford in 1780. Historic England also records Civil War repairs in 1643, Telford’s renovation around 1780, a substantial restoration programme after the castle was purchased in 1924, and its conversion to the Shropshire Regimental Museum in 1985. Conservation therefore has to account for fabric from different periods rather than treat the site as a single, unchanged structure. Historic England says the earliest castle was a motte and bailey built by Roger de Montgomery, of which no traces survive; an earlier Saxon fortification is described only as possible.

What the Conservation Management Plan established
Shropshire Council and the Big Town Partnership commissioned a Conservation Management Plan in 2021; Vicky Hunns of TDR Heritage researched and wrote it in 2022, with specialist input on collections and archaeology. Its purpose was to establish the site’s history and context, significance and designations, condition and vulnerabilities, and future management needs.
The plan’s described work included a topographical survey, measured elevations and plans, historic-building analysis and record, an ecological survey, and a full condition survey. It also identified repair and maintenance priorities and anticipated costs across short-, medium- and long-term periods. Access to some spaces was limited by differing ownership and private areas. This is a management framework for the site, not evidence that every identified repair has since been carried out. The council’s published Conservation Management Plan is the source for detailed recommendations.

What the latest wall-safety notices say
The December 2025 notices concern the Dana footpath beside the castle wall and railway station, not a general closure of the castle grounds. On 2 December, Shropshire Council said it had closed the path as an emergency safety measure after concerns about sections of the wall. Emergency access was maintained for some residents. The council said the path was owned by Cove Group as part of the prison estate, while it coordinated repair assessments with Historic England and approved contractors. Planning cabinet member David Walker said: “We have serious safety concerns about some of the crenellations – or battlements – on the castle and have therefore fenced off the Dana path to help protect the public.” The council’s 2 December notice gives the closure and ownership details.

The work described included removing and securely storing four sections of crenellations in the poorest condition, ahead of a main set of repairs planned for 2026. The council said the footpath would remain closed while work was under way. It also said the Dana footbridge and steps to the station remained open to able-bodied users as access to Castle Gates. Deputy leader Alex Wagner said: “The council’s priority is to restrict access for safety reasons until the necessary repairs can be completed.” The 15 December notice describes the consent and intended temporary intervention.

The latest located castle-wall-specific update is dated December 2025; check with Shropshire Council for a current access or works update. A separate 2026 notice about railway bridge maintenance concerns Network Rail bridges and should not be taken as confirmation of castle-wall repairs.
Longer-term plans for the site
In July 2024, a Shropshire Council report said an Audience Development Plan and Feasibility Study had been commissioned after completion of the Conservation Management Plan. The council reported £30,000 of UK Shared Prosperity Fund support for the work and set a February 2025 target completion date. Its intended scope included engagement with residents and visitors, a shared statement of intent, consideration of civic and local-council events and possible commercial and heritage uses, review of the Soldiers of Shropshire Museum’s current use and aspirations, and an options report. The report describes the planned process; the sources cited here do not establish whether the study was completed or what recommendations it made. The council’s 2024 portfolio-holder report sets out the brief and funding.

The council’s 2023 announcement describes the proposed feasibility work.

Access around the historic site is not uniform. The museum says portable ramps serve the main hall, part of the ground floor, the shop and an accessible toilet. Manual wheelchair users need assistance on the inclined approach to the main hall; some exhibits are not wheelchair accessible, and steeper sections of the grounds path may require assistance. Assistance dogs are permitted, while other dogs are not. Check the museum’s accessibility information alongside current notices, particularly because the Dana path closure was a separate safety issue from museum admission and grounds access.
