Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A “shadow” on a TV is not one specific fault. It may be temporary image retention, permanent burn-in, a failed LED backlight, LCD clouding, panel banding, or a problem with one HDMI device, channel, app, or signal. The fastest diagnosis is simple: open the TV’s own home screen or settings menu, then change inputs and content. If the mark moves or disappears, investigate the source. If it stays in exactly the same place across menus and inputs, the television itself is probably affected.
Do not press, rub, or massage the screen. That can create permanent panel damage.

What kind of “shadow” do you see?
Describe the symptom before choosing a fix. A dark blotch is not automatically burn-in, and an afterimage is not the same as a failed backlight.

First identify the display type
LCD, LED, QLED, and Mini-LED televisions use a backlight. A dark region can therefore be caused by failed LED strips, a backlight driver, detached diffuser lenses, local-dimming behavior, or physical panel damage. “QLED” and “Mini-LED” do not mean the television is OLED.

OLED televisions emit light from individual pixels and do not use a conventional LED backlight. Their possible causes include temporary retention, permanent burn-in, pixel aging, banding, calibration behavior, and other panel non-uniformity.
Older plasma displays can also retain images and age unevenly, although most current troubleshooting concerns LCD/LED and OLED models.
The five-minute isolation test
- Inspect the mark. Note whether it is dark, bright, cloudy, colored, a duplicate image, or a fixed logo. Check whether it appears only in dark scenes, black bars, or ordinary viewing.
- Open the TV’s own home screen or settings. Use a menu with a solid background. If the shadow is absent from the menus, the TV panel may be fine and the source deserves attention.
- Change content. Try a built-in streaming app, a different HDMI input, a bright scene, a dark scene, and uniform white, gray, and black screens. Temporarily bypass a receiver, console, cable box, or streaming stick.
- Power-cycle the TV. Turn it off, unplug it for at least 60 seconds, reconnect it, and test again. TCL recommends this sequence for temporary display issues (TCL troubleshooting guidance).
- Run the built-in picture test. Look for a feature called Picture Test, Screen Test, Self Diagnosis, Panel Test, or a similar label. The location differs by brand, model, operating system, region, and firmware. For example, LG documents
All Settings → Support → Additional Settings → Picture Testfor a 2020 webOS 5.0 example; do not assume that path applies to a current model (LG’s ghosting and Picture Test guidance). - Document the result. Photograph the mark on white, gray, black, and normal content. Record the model number, serial number, purchase date, inputs tested, and whether the mark appears in menus.
If the shadow appears only on one channel, app, HDMI device, or video, test another cable and source, check the device’s resolution, frame rate, HDR, and picture-processing settings, and investigate the broadcast signal. LG notes that duplicate images limited to a particular channel can result from a weak signal.
How to fix the main types of TV shadow
Temporary image retention
Retention often looks like a faint station logo, score display, paused game, or menu outline. It normally fades after the content changes or after the television has been off. It is especially associated with prolonged static content on OLED displays.
Stop displaying the static image, watch varied full-screen content, and allow the TV to perform its normal maintenance. If the manufacturer provides a pixel-cleaning, pixel-refresher, panel-refresh, or panel-calibration feature, use it only as described for your exact model. These names are not interchangeable across brands.

LG says some supported OLED sets run automatic routines after approximately four hours of cumulative use and a longer routine after about 2,000 hours, but timing, availability, and menu names vary by model and software (LG’s image-retention and burn-in guidance). Do not repeatedly run long refresh cycles as an experiment.
Permanent burn-in
Burn-in is more likely when a logo or interface outline remains in the same place on every input and uniform background. It does not disappear after normal varied viewing or an approved panel-care routine.
Static logos, paused games, very high brightness, and vivid picture modes increase the risk on OLED televisions. A pixel-refresh tool may reduce temporary retention or some non-uniformity, but it cannot be guaranteed to reverse established burn-in. Sony likewise distinguishes image retention from panel non-uniformity and documents calibration features only for supported OLED models (Sony’s OLED support guidance).
Before paying for a panel, check the exact warranty, retailer return policy, and protection-plan terms. Burn-in coverage varies by brand, model, region, usage conditions, and plan.
Failed LED backlight or diffuser
On an LCD/LED television, a broad dark area, dark half of the screen, flickering brightness, or a picture that is faintly visible behind darkness can indicate a backlight problem. A detached diffuser lens can also create a dark spot, so replacing an LED strip is not always the answer.

A technician may replace individual LED strips or the complete backlight assembly. Parts must match the exact model and revision. Genuine Samsung backlight listings viewed on August 18, 2026 showed example prices from $31.99 to $80.99, with some items out of stock; those are parts prices, not an installed repair quote (iFixit backlight parts).

A flashlight test can sometimes reveal a faint picture behind an apparently dark section, but it does not identify the failed component. Never open the TV merely to perform this test. The panel must usually be removed to reach the strips, and a large, thin panel can crack easily. Labor, tools, shipping, and the risk of further damage often matter more than the part price.
LCD clouding and backlight bleed
Clouding appears as gray or white patches in black scenes; bright corners may look like flashlight beams. It is usually most visible in a dark room or when there is no video signal. Some unevenness may be considered a characteristic of LCD technology, but severity and the retailer’s return standard matter.
Reduce the TV’s Backlight setting, try Standard, Cinema, or Filmmaker mode instead of Vivid or Dynamic, and temporarily reduce aggressive Dynamic Contrast or local dimming. If available, enable the Light Sensor and try a lower Power Saving setting. Sony recommends these types of adjustments for uneven LCD brightness (Sony’s LCD brightness guidance). They may reduce visibility; they do not repair damaged hardware.
Panel non-uniformity and dirty-screen effect
Vertical bands or broad gray areas that appear during slow pans across skies, ice, sports fields, or other uniform scenes are commonly described as banding or dirty-screen effect. If they remain in the same places across menus, inputs, and test screens, settings rarely provide a reliable cure.

Panel uniformity varies between individual televisions. A replacement may be better, but it is not guaranteed to be perfect. If the TV is new and the defect is distracting, document it and use the return or exchange process before disassembling anything.
Picture settings that may reduce the shadow
- Lower Backlight on LCD/LED models.
- Lower OLED Light, Panel Brightness, or the equivalent control on OLED models.
- Use Standard, Cinema, or Filmmaker mode rather than Vivid or Dynamic.
- Temporarily reduce Dynamic Contrast and aggressive local dimming to determine whether processing is creating the appearance.
- Enable an ambient-light or Light Sensor feature where available.
- Use the TV’s screen saver and avoid leaving paused games, news logos, menus, or other static images displayed for long periods.
These are mitigations, not proof that the panel has been repaired. A setting that hides a shadow on one scene may simply lower the brightness enough to conceal it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What not to do
- Do not press, tap, massage, or rub the display.
- Do not use glass cleaner, alcohol, abrasive cloths, paper towels, or harsh chemicals. TCL recommends a soft, dry microfiber cloth and warns that pressure can cause additional panel damage.
- Do not open a plugged-in TV.
- Do not buy a random “universal” LED strip. Confirm the exact model and part number.
- Do not repeatedly run long pixel-refresh cycles hoping to cure physical damage or permanent burn-in.
- Do not increase brightness or use Vivid mode to “burn through” an afterimage.
- Do not treat a YouTube flashing-color video as a guaranteed burn-in cure.
- Do not remove a large panel without suitable support, a clean padded workspace, appropriate tools, and experienced help.
Repair, warranty, or replacement?
Use the warranty or return policy first when the TV is new, the defect appears on menus and every input, or the panel has lines, cracks, spreading blotches, or liquid damage. Photograph the symptom before opening the television and contact the manufacturer or retailer with the model and serial number.
Consider professional diagnosis for a large or premium TV, a suspected backlight or board fault, or a set covered by a protection plan. Best Buy states that TVs under 42 inches can be brought to a store and that in-home repair is offered for TVs 42 inches and larger, subject to local eligibility (Best Buy TV repair service).
Ask for a complete quote covering diagnosis, labor, parts, travel, shipping, and any warranty on the repair. Historical figures on Best Buy’s protection page, updated April 2024, list an average national TV panel repair range of $1,000–$4,200. That is not a current quote, but it illustrates why panel replacement is often uneconomical (Best Buy protection information).

- Large TV Backlighting: 16 million color LED strip creates a dynamic TV backlighting experience
- Safe and Easy to Use: Operates at 5V with a 5m USB cable and IR remote control
- Dual Control: Use the 'illumi home' app to set timers and control the lights remotely

DIY backlight replacement is appropriate only for experienced electronics repairers who have confirmed the exact part and accept the risk. It is not suitable for OLED sets, cracked panels, delamination, or a diagnosis based only on a photograph. For an older budget TV, replacement may make more financial sense; for a recent premium set, repair or a protection-plan claim may be worthwhile.
Prevention
- Use the built-in screen saver.
- Avoid leaving static logos, paused games, menus, and news tickers on screen for extended periods.
- Do not run the TV unnecessarily at maximum brightness.
- Vary full-screen content on OLED displays.
- Keep ventilation openings clear and avoid excessive heat.
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for pixel cleaning or panel refresh rather than running maintenance cycles manually without reason.
Quick decision tree
Only one app, channel, HDMI device, or video? Troubleshoot the source, cable, signal, resolution, HDR, and processing.
Visible on menus and every input, but fading? Treat it as likely temporary retention and use only approved panel care.
