ADT Bought Origin AI, a Pioneer in Wi-Fi Motion Sensing

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ADT has acquired Origin Wireless, Inc., the company operating as Origin AI, for $170 million in cash. The deal gives ADT technology that analyzes changes in Wi-Fi and radio-frequency signals to detect human presence and activity without relying on cameras, audio, or wearables. ADT says it expects to commercialize products using the technology in 2027—not immediately.

The phrase “invented Wi-Fi motion sensing” is useful shorthand for Origin’s role as an early commercial pioneer, but it is too absolute as a description of the broader WLAN-sensing field.

What ADT bought

ADT announced the acquisition on February 24, 2026. Its annual filing says the transaction closed on February 20, 2026, making Origin AI an indirect wholly owned ADT subsidiary. The purchase price was $170 million in cash, subject to customary adjustments.

ADT says Origin’s portfolio includes more than 200 early-priority global patents. Origin’s own older corporate material describes more than 130 patents filed and granted, so the figures should not be treated as identical measurements: they come from different descriptions and dates.

ADT’s acquisition announcement and its annual filing provide the transaction details.

How Wi-Fi sensing works

Wi-Fi signals are already traveling between routers and connected devices. When a person moves through an indoor space, the body can block, reflect, bend, or otherwise disturb those signals. Software can analyze the resulting changes and infer events such as movement, presence, location, breathing, or a fall.

This is not a photographic image of a room. The system interprets signal patterns. That makes Wi-Fi sensing different from a camera, which records visual information, and from a conventional passive-infrared sensor, which detects changes in heat and movement within a field of view.

Technology What it generally detects What it does not provide by itself
Camera Visual activity, faces, objects, and events Privacy from video capture
PIR motion sensor Heat and movement in a defined detection area Detailed context about the event
Wi-Fi sensing Inferred presence, movement, and activity from signal changes A recognizable face, license plate, or conventional video record

“Uses Wi-Fi” does not mean that every existing router automatically becomes a motion sensor. Compatibility can depend on sensing software, supported radio hardware, firmware, device placement, network configuration, and the provider’s integration.

What Origin says its platform can detect

Origin’s published applications include general motion, human presence, human-versus-non-human activity, zone-level activity, intrusion, breathing, falls, wandering, sleep and activity insights, occupancy-based automation, and aging-in-place alerts.

Those are company-described capabilities and use cases, not a promise that every feature will be included in every future ADT product. A fall-detection or breathing feature should also not be treated as a medical device or guaranteed emergency service unless ADT supplies product-specific documentation and regulatory status.

The package includes a sensor, manual, battery, adhesive backing, and support for four months of battery life (the insulation strip needs to be unplugged for the first use).

Origin’s technology description says its software runs at the edge and communicates with the cloud to relay sensing events. That may reduce the need to transmit camera footage, but camera-free does not mean data-free: occupancy, breathing, and activity information can still be highly sensitive.

Why ADT wants the technology

Traditional security systems can answer, “Did a sensor trigger?” ADT wants a system that can provide more context: “What appears to be happening, and is a person involved?”

Potential applications include:

  • Verifying whether an alarm event involves a human.
  • Distinguishing people from pets, objects, or other non-human movement.
  • Adding occupancy and activity context to alerts.
  • Supporting monitored-security operators and first responders.
  • Enabling privacy-sensitive automation without putting cameras in every room.
  • Supporting aging-in-place services and caregiver notifications.

Better context could help reduce false alarms, but that is an expected benefit rather than an independently established result across all homes. Accuracy can vary with room layout, walls, furniture, router placement, interference, household density, and changes to the network.

Does it replace cameras or motion sensors?

Not categorically. Wi-Fi sensing is better understood as a complementary sensing layer.

It may help cover areas where cameras are undesirable, including bedrooms, bathrooms, or other privacy-sensitive spaces. Radio signals can propagate through or around some obstacles, potentially reducing line-of-sight limitations. But real-world coverage and accuracy depend on the particular home and product design.

Wi-Fi sensing also cannot provide the visual detail needed to identify a face, read a license plate, or review exactly what happened. ADT has not announced that conventional contact sensors, PIR sensors, glass-break detectors, or cameras will disappear from its systems.

Origin markets some deployments as reducing the need for additional hardware. That does not establish that every ADT installation will be hardware-free. The eventual requirements could include supported routers, connected devices, software, or other equipment.

What is TruShield?

TruShield Security is Origin’s branded router-based or hardware-free security platform. Origin says it can use existing routers and Wi-Fi-connected devices to detect disturbances and provide “Verified Human Presence” by distinguishing human from non-human activity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The service is presented primarily as a platform for internet-service providers and security companies, with rollout tiers ranging from motion classification to professionally monitored security. It is not presented as a broadly available direct-to-consumer product with public retail pricing.

Why the “invented Wi-Fi motion sensing” claim needs an asterisk

Origin has a credible claim to being an early commercial pioneer in applying ordinary Wi-Fi signals to sensing. The company says its founders developed ways to detect motion, breathing, falls, and other events, and it holds a substantial patent portfolio.

But WLAN or Wi-Fi sensing is a broader research and standards field involving universities, companies, and industry organizations. Origin did not invent every scientific concept behind it. A more accurate description is that ADT bought Origin AI, a pioneer and major patent holder in commercial AI-enabled Wi-Fi sensing.

The Verisure connection

Origin’s technology already had an important security-industry relationship. Verisure had used it for about five years and had been a minority investor in Origin since 2023.

ADT, Origin, and Verisure announced a five-year renewable commercial agreement alongside the acquisition. It includes continued licensing by Verisure, expanded commercialization rights across Verisure’s European and Latin American customer base, defined exclusivity in professionally monitored security in those regions, and ongoing development and data collaboration.

The agreement provides at least $30 million over five years for development services, plus a per-household activation fee tied to Verisure’s existing arrangement. That makes the acquisition more than a future U.S. product experiment: ADT is also taking ownership of technology with an existing international commercial relationship.

Details are available in ADT’s announcement of the Verisure agreement.

When will ADT customers get it?

ADT says it expects to begin commercializing offerings that use Origin’s technology in 2027. The available announcement materials do not identify a final product name, ADT plan or subscription tier, supported router models, installation requirements, consumer pricing, geographic availability, or whether existing ADT+ customers will receive the capability.

Customers should therefore not assume that an ADT plan purchased today automatically includes Origin sensing. The acquisition is real, but the consumer product details remain to be announced.

Benefits and unresolved questions

Potential benefits

  • Privacy-sensitive coverage: Presence detection without conventional video in every space.
  • More context: Possible human-versus-non-human classification for alarm verification.
  • Less dedicated hardware: Origin says existing Wi-Fi infrastructure can provide sensing inputs in some deployments.
  • Whole-home possibilities: Radio-based sensing may reach areas that are difficult to cover with line-of-sight devices.
  • Aging in place: Potential fall, wandering, breathing, and activity alerts without requiring a wearable.

Questions buyers should ask

  • What accuracy data has been independently published for real homes?
  • How does the system handle pets, robots, guests, appliances, and unusual movement?
  • What happens when furniture, walls, routers, or connected devices change?
  • Which router and firmware combinations are supported?
  • Is processing performed locally, in the cloud, or in both places?
  • How long are occupancy and activity events retained?
  • Can household members and guests disable particular sensing functions?
  • What happens if the internet connection or power fails?

These questions matter because eliminating cameras does not eliminate surveillance concerns. A detailed record of when people are home, moving, sleeping, or potentially injured can be just as sensitive as other smart-home data.

What this means for buildings and home-security planning

For builders, remodelers, integrators, and property operators, the immediate significance is strategic rather than a new installation specification. Wi-Fi sensing could eventually reduce the number of dedicated devices needed for certain presence or occupancy use cases, but no responsible design should remove conventional life-safety or security equipment based on the acquisition alone.

Until ADT publishes supported hardware, performance data, reliability requirements, and service terms, Wi-Fi sensing should be evaluated as a future option—not as a substitute for code-required systems, professionally designed access control, fire detection, emergency communications, or clearly specified security sensors.
