Eight Sleep’s Pod 5 is more than a mattress cover, but it is not a new mattress. It combines a water-powered cover, a bedside hub, sleep tracking and app controls. The newer configurations add a temperature-controlled blanket above the sleeper, while the Pod 5 Ultra adds speakers built into an adjustable base.
The blanket is the more meaningful upgrade: it extends heating and cooling beyond the mattress surface and lets partners set different temperatures. The speakers are mainly for white noise, soundscapes and guided sleep audio—not a replacement for a general-purpose Bluetooth speaker. The trade-off is a luxury-level price plus a subscription.

What is Eight Sleep’s Pod 5?
Pod 5 is a connected sleep-temperature system designed to fit over an existing mattress. Its cover connects to a hub that circulates temperature-controlled water, allowing the two sides of the bed to be adjusted independently. Eight Sleep lists Full, Queen, King and California King sizes on its Pod cover product page.

It can change the thermal conditions around a sleeper, but it does not change a mattress’s firmness, pressure relief or support. Someone with an unsuitable mattress or an underlying sleep problem should not expect a temperature-control system to solve it.

What is new in Pod 5?
- Temperature-controlled blanket: Adds water-powered heating and cooling above the sleeper, complementing the cover below.
- Integrated speakers: Available as part of the Pod 5 Ultra adjustable-base concept.
- Sleep audio: Includes soundscapes, white noise and guided non-sleep deep rest sessions associated with Andrew Huberman.
- Health Check: An app report that summarizes sleep-related heart-rate and breathing information and generates algorithmic alerts.
The underlying idea remains the same as earlier Pod systems: automatically manage sleep temperature with a connected cover. Pod 5 expands that ecosystem rather than replacing the core concept. Launch coverage describes the new hardware and software features.
How the temperature-controlled blanket works
The blanket is not simply an electric heated blanket. It uses the Pod’s water-circulation system to provide both heating and cooling. Eight Sleep and launch coverage describe an operating range of approximately 55°F to 110°F.
Used alone, the cover manages temperature primarily from beneath the sleeper. Adding the blanket places temperature-controlled material above the body as well, creating what Eight Sleep calls fuller-body coverage. That description refers to product placement—not independent proof that the arrangement improves sleep outcomes.

Independent left and right temperature controls are particularly useful for couples. One person can choose a cooler setting while the other chooses a warmer one. The exact hardware and compatibility depend on the mattress size and selected bundle, so buyers should confirm the configuration at checkout rather than assume every Pod 5 package includes the blanket.
What do the Pod 5 speakers do?
The speakers are integrated into the adjustable base associated with the Pod 5 Ultra, rather than being a separate bedroom audio system. Reported uses include:
- White noise
- Calming soundscapes
- Guided relaxation and NSDR sessions
- Playback that stops after the user falls asleep or continues through the night
The available product information supports sleep-audio functionality, but it does not establish that the speakers function as ordinary Bluetooth speakers for general music playback. Their value is convenience and integration, not necessarily high-fidelity audio. If you already use a phone, headphones, smart speaker or white-noise machine, this part of the Ultra upgrade may be redundant.
What is Health Check?
Health Check is described as an Eight Sleep app report that uses sleep-related heart-rate and breathing information to summarize the night and flag potential issues. The current product information also lists metrics such as heart rate, heart-rate variability, sleep phases and snoring.
These should be treated as consumer wellness measurements and algorithm-generated reports, not medical diagnoses. The available material does not establish clinical validation, diagnostic accuracy or regulatory clearance. A Health Check alert should not be used to diagnose sleep apnea, heart disease or another medical condition; persistent concerns belong with a qualified clinician.

Pod 5 configurations
| Configuration | What it adds | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Pod 5 Core | Temperature-controlled cover, hub, tracking and software | Buyers focused on heating and cooling |
| Cover plus blanket | Core features plus above-body temperature control | Couples or sleepers who want broader thermal coverage |
| Pod 5 Ultra | Adjustable base and integrated sleep speakers, alongside the Pod system | Buyers wanting an integrated smart-bed setup |
If you already own a suitable adjustable base or care mainly about cooling, the Ultra upgrade is difficult to justify on the available information. The blanket is the more direct expansion of Pod 5’s central purpose.
How much does Pod 5 cost?
Prices vary by date, mattress size, bundle and subscription tier. The figures below should not be treated as one universal price.
Launch prices reported in May 2025
| Configuration | Reported launch price |
|---|---|
| Full-size Pod 5 Core | $2,849 |
| Pod 5 with temperature-controlled blanket | $4,099 |
| Pod 5 Ultra with adjustable base and speakers | $6,099 |
| Subscription | From $199 annually |
Those were launch-era figures. Eight Sleep’s product pages show a different pricing picture as of August 2026, including a Pod 5 listing at $2,999. One page lists Autopilot Standard at $17 per month or $199 annually, and Enhanced at $25 per month or $299 annually. Another product page lists a Pod cover compatible with the blanket at $1,499 and advertises rental from $169 per month.

Official pages: Pod cover and The Cover.
The subscription changes the real cost
Eight Sleep’s current product page says Autopilot is required for the first 12 months and can be canceled afterward. It describes the plan as supporting automated temperature adjustments, sleep and health reports, vibration and thermal alarms, snoring detection or mitigation and other software features. The plan covers two users on one Pod, with no second subscription when a partner is added under the stated conditions.
Using the current listed $2,999 Pod 5 figure as an example:
- With Standard Autopilot: at least $3,198 before tax in the first year.
- With Enhanced Autopilot: at least $3,298 before tax in the first year.
Those are arithmetic examples, not guaranteed checkout totals. They exclude possible differences by size, bundle, shipping, taxes, promotions and later renewal costs. Do not assume every feature stops working without a subscription; the safer conclusion is that the subscription is initially required and supports the system’s automated and reporting features.

- High cost: Even the Core system is expensive compared with conventional blankets, fans or mattress protectors.
- Recurring fees: The first-year plan is part of the practical purchase price, and renewal may be needed for the full software experience.
- More hardware: The hub, cables and water system require space beside or near the bed.
- Maintenance concerns: A water-based system brings more setup and leak anxiety than an ordinary blanket or air-based product.
- Added layers: Some sleepers may dislike the feel of extra material, tubing or cover texture.
- Software dependence: App, account and connected-system infrastructure are part of the ownership experience.
- Redundant audio: The Ultra speakers may add little for people who already have a preferred audio setup.
- Limited medical meaning: Health metrics and alerts should not be treated as clinical findings.
A comparison published by BedJet emphasizes that its air-based approach avoids water circulating through the bed and uses a different hub arrangement. That is a vendor comparison, so it should be treated as an explanation of competing designs rather than independent testing. BedJet’s comparison provides its stated differences.

Who should buy Pod 5?
Pod 5 makes the most sense when temperature is the main sleep problem and the buyer is willing to pay for automation. It is especially relevant to:
- Couples who need different temperatures on each side of the bed
- Sleepers who feel cold or hot beyond the mattress surface
- People who want app-based adjustments and sleep tracking
- Existing Eight Sleep owners interested in the blanket expansion
- Buyers with room for a bedside hub and tolerance for a subscription
The Core cover is the rational configuration if you want temperature control but already have a good bed frame and do not need speakers. The Ultra is harder to justify if you already own an adjustable base or use separate audio equipment.
Who should skip it?
Pod 5 is a poor fit for shoppers who want an inexpensive cooling solution, reject subscriptions, move frequently, or do not want a hub and connected hardware near the bed. It is also the wrong solution if the primary problem is mattress support, firmness, pressure relief, pain or a suspected sleep disorder.

Alternatives to consider
BedJet 3
BedJet 3 uses air delivered beneath the sheets rather than water circulating through a mattress cover. It is aimed at buyers who want heating and cooling with a lower-complexity, generally more accessible design. It may be a better fit if you dislike water-based hardware, but less suitable if you want temperature control embedded in the mattress surface or Eight Sleep’s integrated tracking.
Sleepme Chilipad or Dock Pro
Sleepme’s Chilipad and Dock Pro are water-based thermal-control alternatives focused more narrowly on bed temperature. See the manufacturer’s product comparison for current distinctions. Exact prices and subscription terms should be checked at checkout.
Sleep Number ClimateCool or Climate360
Sleep Number’s climate-focused systems are full mattress platforms rather than covers placed on an existing mattress. They may make more sense for someone replacing the entire bed and prioritizing adjustable firmness as well as temperature-related features.
Conventional solutions
Breathable sheets, a mattress protector, a fan, a standard electric blanket or room-level air conditioning can solve less demanding temperature problems at a fraction of Pod 5’s cost. They do not provide its dual-zone automation or tracking, but they also avoid the subscription, hub and software dependence.
Bottom line
Pod 5’s temperature-controlled blanket is the substantive new feature: it adds water-powered heating and cooling above the body while preserving independent side controls. The Ultra speakers are a convenience feature for sleep audio, not clearly a replacement for a dedicated speaker. With launch pricing ranging from $2,849 to $6,099 and current official pages showing different configuration prices plus a first-year Autopilot requirement, Pod 5 is best understood as a specialized luxury system for temperature-sensitive sleepers—particularly couples—not a universal sleep upgrade.
