Samsung’s 2026 refrigerator push combines a software update for select existing Family Hub models with new Bespoke AI hardware. Compatible U.S. refrigerators with a 32-inch Family Hub display and AI Vision are scheduled to receive improved food recognition, more capable Bixby voice control and personalized Now Brief features during 2026. New models add features such as AutoView and zero-clearance installation.
The important qualification is that Samsung’s current U.S. support documentation describes Auto Open Door primarily as a light-touch sensor feature—not as a universal voice command that opens every compatible refrigerator.

What Samsung actually announced
Samsung’s announcement covers two separate developments:
- A software update: Select U.S. refrigerators with a 32-inch Family Hub display and AI Vision are expected to receive expanded AI features without being replaced.
- New refrigerator hardware: The 2026 Bespoke AI range adds physical features including AutoView glass panels and models designed for zero-clearance installation.
That distinction matters. Software can improve food recognition and voice assistance, but it cannot add a transparent door, change cabinet construction or turn an older refrigerator into every version of Samsung’s new hardware.

Samsung says availability will depend on the exact model, software version and region. The announcement does not establish that every Family Hub refrigerator, every screen size or every country receives the same update. Owners should verify their model rather than assume eligibility. Samsung’s announcement specifically identifies select U.S. 32-inch Family Hub refrigerators with AI Vision.
What the 2026 software update adds
Expanded AI Vision food recognition
Samsung says the updated AI Vision system is built with Google Gemini technology and can recognize a broader range of foods. The improvements include certain processed foods, user-labeled items and foods stored in personal containers. Samsung also says the system will improve tracking of food placed into and removed from the refrigerator.
In practical terms, the refrigerator can help maintain a digital food list, associate items with expiration dates, suggest recipes and send items to a shopping list. It is better understood as an inventory assistant than as a fully automatic stock-control system.

Samsung’s own guidance says recognition can be incomplete. Items may be missed if they are hidden behind other food or outside the camera’s view. Food in some door bins and freezer areas may not be identified, and users may still need to add or edit entries manually. Physically removing an item does not necessarily remove it from the digital list. Samsung’s food-management guidance explains these limitations.
More capable Bixby
Bixby can be started by tapping its icon on the Family Hub display or saying “Hi Bixby.” Samsung’s documented examples include:
- “Show me what’s inside the fridge.”
- “Do I have chicken?”
- “Add chicken to my Shopping List.”
- “Find recipes with ingredients that are expiring soon.”
- “Add expired items from View Inside to Shopping List.”
- “Morning brief.”
- “Afternoon brief.”
- “Play Pandora.”
On supported connected models, Bixby can also expose refrigerator information and controls such as temperature, Power Cool, Power Freeze and the ice maker. Exact commands depend on the refrigerator, account setup, software and region. Samsung recommends using the refrigerator’s Explore Bixby area for model-specific commands. Now Brief and Voice ID
Now Brief is Samsung’s personalized information and widget layer for Family Hub. It can bring together household information such as calendars, weather, news and food-expiration reminders. Samsung also describes Voice ID features that can distinguish family members and present more relevant content to each person.

The trade-off is that personalization requires account setup, voice registration and connected services. Households considering a Family Hub refrigerator should be comfortable with microphones, cameras, cloud-connected features and the data associated with them.
Can Samsung refrigerators really open by voice?
This is where the headline needs careful interpretation. Samsung supports voice interaction with Family Hub appliances, but the current U.S. support documentation for Auto Open Door describes a physical sensor activation method.
On Family Hub models, the documented setup path is:
- Open Fridge Manager.
- Select Settings.
- Scroll to the bottom.
- Turn on Auto open door.

When enabled, the feature opens the door after a light touch to the door sensor. Samsung says the refrigerator must be level, and the opening angle can be affected by installation conditions and heavy items in the door bins. The feature may be disabled by default on some models.

It is also important that automatic closing is not available. Auto Open Door is not a completely autonomous open-and-close system. Samsung’s support information does not confirm a universal voice command that physically opens every compatible refrigerator door. Samsung’s Auto Open Door instructions provide the current setup and operating details.
Do not confuse these four features

Calling all of these “voice-controlled doors” creates the wrong expectation. AutoView does not open the refrigerator. Auto Open Door is documented as touch activated. Voice assistants handle supported commands, but that does not mean every door function is available by voice.
What Alexa can do
Alexa is built into supported Family Hub refrigerators. Samsung says users must sign in to an Amazon account. Examples include:
- “Alexa, set a reminder.”
- “Alexa, add milk to my shopping list.”
- “Alexa, play Amazon Music.”
Alexa availability varies by country, language, model and software version. Its presence also does not mean that every Alexa command controls every refrigerator function.
What the new 2026 hardware adds
AutoView
AutoView uses a glass panel that illuminates when a person approaches. It lets users see inside without opening the door, potentially reducing unnecessary door opening. It is a visibility feature, not a voice-operated or automatic door-opening feature.
Zero-clearance installation
New models are designed to work with much smaller side gaps. Samsung describes gaps of approximately 4 millimeters for the new design, but the precise installation requirements remain model-specific.

“Zero clearance” does not mean that installation requires no planning. Before ordering, check:
- Overall width, height and depth
- Door swing and drawer clearance
- Clearance above the refrigerator
- Water and electrical connections
- Delivery-path dimensions
- Whether nearby walls or cabinets obstruct the doors

AI Vision is not a perfect inventory
AI Vision can miss food that is obscured, outside camera coverage or difficult to classify. Items in some door bins and freezer areas may not be recognized. Users may need to manually add, edit or remove foods and confirm expiration dates.
The most reliable workflow is to treat the digital list as a helpful starting point. Check it against the physical refrigerator before relying on it for a grocery order or recipe decision.

- Check the refrigerator’s connection and Samsung account.
- Confirm that the command is supported on that model.
- Check for software updates and regional language availability.
Auto Open Door depends on installation
If the door opens too far, not far enough or inconsistently, confirm that the refrigerator is level. Door-bin weight and installation conditions can affect the opening angle. Do not expect the door to close itself.
Privacy and screen content
Family Hub combines cameras, microphones, accounts, food information and connected services. That creates convenience but also raises privacy questions. Recent reporting has also raised concerns about advertising appearing on smart refrigerator displays. This is separate from the 2026 AI announcement, but it is relevant to buyers who do not want commercial content on an appliance screen. TechRadar reported on the advertising concern.

- Regularly manage shopping lists for a large household.
- Want to view refrigerator contents remotely.
- Would benefit from touch-assisted opening because of limited grip strength or full hands.
- Want recipes, reminders, entertainment and smart-home controls built into the refrigerator.
- Are buying a premium refrigerator anyway and prefer a connected model.
A simpler refrigerator is probably better for buyers who want the lowest cost, physical controls, fewer software dependencies or no microphones and cameras. It is also the safer choice for anyone unwilling to maintain a digital food list or expecting AI recognition to be complete and automatic.
What existing owners should do
If you already own a Samsung refrigerator, do not replace it solely because of the 2026 announcement. First check:
- Whether it has a 32-inch Family Hub display.
- Whether it includes AI Vision.
- Whether your model is sold in the United States and listed as compatible.
- Whether the update has reached your refrigerator and region.
- Which features your exact model supports.
A compatible existing refrigerator may receive substantial software improvements. It will not gain physical features such as an AutoView panel or a different zero-clearance cabinet design through software.
Verdict
Samsung’s 2026 update makes Family Hub more useful, especially for food tracking, shopping-list management, recipes and hands-free household requests. The update is also notable because some existing 32-inch Family Hub owners can receive the new software without buying a new refrigerator.
