Samsung’s AI Energy Mode is a real feature, but it is not available on every Samsung TV and it is not a guaranteed way to cut your electricity bill by a fixed percentage. On compatible models, it mainly manages screen brightness using information such as ambient light, viewing behavior and, on some newer televisions, the content being displayed.

The practical trade-off is straightforward: lower brightness can reduce power use, but the picture may look darker. AI Energy Mode also does not operate in Game Mode, and compatibility depends on the exact model, country, firmware and SmartThings support.

What Samsung AI Energy Mode actually changes

In practical terms, AI Energy Mode is adaptive brightness control connected to Samsung’s SmartThings energy-management system. The TV can detect how bright the room is and reduce or adjust screen brightness when full output is unnecessary.

Samsung also describes SmartThings AI Energy Mode as analyzing usage patterns. Product descriptions for selected newer models additionally mention scene-by-scene content analysis where possible. These capabilities should not be assumed to work identically on every Samsung television.

The visible result is primarily a change in brightness. Samsung’s documentation does not establish that the feature generally lowers processor workload, resolution or refresh rate. Samsung has also described compatible TVs lowering brightness after the viewer has been absent for more than two hours, although the exact behavior and settings depend on the model.

A useful way to understand the “AI” label is this: it describes Samsung’s automated analysis and SmartThings connection, rather than a new low-power display technology that redesigns the picture.

Which Samsung TVs support it?

There is no universal “all Samsung TVs from a certain year” answer. Check the exact model number and your regional Samsung documentation.

Samsung’s U.K. explainer says the feature was available on 2023 Smart TV models from CU7000 and higher, as well as 2023 Lifestyle TV models from LS03C and higher. That is a regional model-year statement, not a guarantee for every country.

Samsung’s SmartThings guidance says SmartThings Energy supports Samsung Smart TVs released in 2022 and later, but SmartThings Energy compatibility is broader than proof that every supported television includes AI Energy Mode. Selected 2025 models, including the S85F OLED, and selected 2026 models, including Samsung’s R95H Micro RGB TV, list AI Energy Mode.

Samsung also notes that its Vision AI-related functions are not available across every lineup, including some Q6F, Crystal and special models. The purchase year alone is therefore not a reliable compatibility test.

Check compatibility in SmartThings

  1. Open the SmartThings app.
  2. Open the Life tab.
  3. Select Energy and follow the setup instructions.
  4. Open More options using the three-dot menu.
  5. Select Your supported devices.
  6. Check whether your specific television appears in the supported list.

The TV, phone and app generally need to be connected through the relevant home network and Samsung account ecosystem. Samsung says availability can vary by country, region, service provider, network environment, device and software version.

How to turn on AI Energy Mode

  1. Add the compatible Samsung TV to SmartThings and complete the connection process.
  2. In SmartThings, go to Life → Energy.
  3. Select the television.
  4. Look for the AI Energy Mode or energy-saving control.
  5. Turn it on and approve any permissions or setup prompts.
  6. Keep the TV connected to Wi-Fi and power so the connected feature can operate.

Labels and screens can differ by country, firmware, TV model and SmartThings version. If the SmartThings feature is unavailable, many Samsung TVs still provide local energy controls through:

Home → All Settings → General and Privacy → Power and Energy Saving

Depending on the model, this menu may include:

  • Brightness Optimization
  • Brightness Reduction
  • Motion Lighting
  • Screen Saver
  • Auto Power Saving
  • Auto Power Off

These TV-only settings are related alternatives, not automatically the same thing as SmartThings AI Energy Mode. Samsung’s official energy-controls guidance is available in its TV energy settings video.

Does AI Energy Mode affect picture quality?

It can. Samsung warns that video may appear slightly dark when AI Energy Mode is enabled. That effect may be unobtrusive in a dark room but more noticeable during daytime viewing or on a large, bright display.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The impact is particularly relevant for HDR films, where reducing overall brightness can make highlights feel less striking. Bright sports, animation and other high-output content may also make changes easier to notice. Viewers watching ordinary SDR television may find the adjustment more acceptable.

Brightness can also change automatically as room conditions change. That is intentional energy-saving behavior, although someone expecting a perfectly constant picture could mistake it for a fault.

If consistent image quality is more important than passive energy savings, use Standard, Filmmaker or a calibrated picture mode according to your preference, and consider enabling only automatic power-off features. If the picture becomes too dim, turn AI Energy Mode off or use a less aggressive local brightness control.

Important limitation: Game Mode

Samsung states that AI Energy Mode does not work with Game Mode. This means enabling the feature does not reduce energy use during every type of TV activity. Users who primarily game should decide whether energy management or gaming-oriented picture behavior is the priority.

Some Samsung support material also indicates that energy-saving behavior may be bypassed by picture modes that prioritize visual performance, including certain AI modes. Treat this as model-specific and check the television’s manual if the feature does not behave as expected.

How much money can it save?

Samsung does not publish one guaranteed savings percentage that applies to every model and household. Results depend on the TV’s model, screen size, content, room brightness, viewing conditions and usage pattern.

The starting point matters too. A TV shipped with Eco Mode enabled may already have some related energy-saving functions active, so the apparent improvement over factory settings could be smaller than the improvement over Standard Mode.

To estimate the result for your own television, compare its real power draw with and without the feature. A plug-in electricity meter can help, particularly if you test the same content and room conditions.

annual cost = watts ÷ 1000 × hours used per day × 365 × electricity rate

For example, measure the difference in watts, multiply by your actual daily viewing time and then apply your local electricity rate. The result will be more useful than a general percentage because it reflects your TV, habits and tariff.

Lowering brightness can reduce electricity consumption, but the savings from one television are likely to be modest for many households. The benefit becomes more meaningful when the set is very large, unusually bright, used for many hours each day or operated where electricity costs are high. Brightness savings also do not necessarily eliminate standby or idle consumption.

AI Energy Mode versus Eco Mode

Eco Mode is a TV or factory picture-and-power configuration. AI Energy Mode is a SmartThings-connected energy feature that can adapt brightness using ambient conditions and usage analysis.

They can overlap: a television shipped with Eco Mode enabled may already reduce brightness or apply related power-saving behavior. But the names, controls and relationship vary by model and region. Do not assume that turning on one automatically activates the other.

What to do when the option is missing

  1. Confirm the TV’s exact model number rather than relying on its purchase year.
  2. Update the television firmware and SmartThings app.
  3. Confirm that the TV is connected to the same network and Samsung account ecosystem required by SmartThings.
  4. Check SmartThings → Life → Energy → More options → Your supported devices.
  5. Exit Game Mode and check whether another visual-priority mode is active.
  6. Look under General and Privacy → Power and Energy Saving for local alternatives.
  7. Consult the regional Samsung support page or manual for the model.

A missing option does not necessarily indicate a defective television. The model may not support AI Energy Mode, the feature may not be offered in your region, or the app and firmware may not meet the required version. Samsung recommends checking for software updates when SmartThings Energy functions do not work correctly.

Should you buy a new TV for this feature?

Usually, no—not solely to reduce the electricity bill. Replacing a working television carries a much larger cost than the likely annual saving from brightness management.

If you are already shopping for a TV, compare more than the AI label. Screen size, maximum brightness, expected viewing hours and the television’s efficiency in on, idle and sleep states all matter. ENERGY STAR says certified televisions are about 34% more energy-efficient than conventional models on average; that is a category-level statistic, not a result for Samsung AI Energy Mode. ENERGY STAR also says certified TVs must use 0.5 watts or less in sleep mode under its U.S. program criteria.

For Samsung buyers, check the exact regional product page—such as Samsung’s U.S. TV range—rather than assuming every OLED, Neo QLED, Crystal or Lifestyle model includes the feature.

When should you enable it?

  • Enable it if you want automatic savings, watch many hours of ordinary SDR content, use the TV in a room where brightness changes are acceptable, and already use SmartThings.
  • Leave it off if you want fixed brightness, watch HDR films critically, dislike dimming or brightness changes, or primarily use the television for gaming.
  • Choose selective controls if you want lower consumption without SmartThings: try Brightness Optimization, manual Brightness Reduction, Auto Power Saving or Auto Power Off.
