The Microsoft Copilot shortcut that appeared on some LG TVs after a webOS update was initially difficult—or impossible—to remove. LG later clarified that it was a browser shortcut, not a fully installed native Copilot app, and said users would be given a way to delete it. That correction matters, but it does not resolve the larger issue: modern TVs are becoming software platforms that monetize the home screen, viewing habits, voice interactions, recommendations, and advertising.
What LG actually added
Reports in December 2025 said that a webOS update had added Microsoft Copilot to some LG televisions as an unremovable app. LG subsequently said the feature was a shortcut to the Copilot website opened through the TV’s built-in browser, rather than a conventional native application.

LG also said it would take steps to let users delete the shortcut. Therefore, “unremovable” is accurate for the initial user experience, but it may be misleading as a permanent description. The removal option is not necessarily available on every affected model, region, or software version.

Whether a particular LG TV received the shortcut can depend on its model, country, webOS version, firmware channel, account settings, and service availability. Owners should check the exact model and software version rather than assume that every LG television has the same feature.

Why “it is only a shortcut” is not the whole answer
Calling the feature a shortcut reduces some of the alarm. A browser shortcut has different storage, permissions, update behavior, and integration than a native application. It does not prove that Copilot is continuously listening, nor does it mean that an AI model has been installed inside the television.
But the shortcut was still placed on a device through a software update that the owner did not specifically request. The manufacturer controls the interface after purchase, and the shortcut directs users to a third-party cloud AI service through a household screen. That is the important precedent.
A television is no longer just a panel displaying an HDMI signal. Its operating system can be changed years after purchase, adding services, recommendations, advertisements, sign-in prompts, and commercial partnerships. The Copilot tile is visible because it appeared on the home screen. Other forms of platform control are less obvious.
Copilot may be part of a broader AI layer
Not every Copilot reference on an LG TV means the same thing. There are at least three distinct possibilities:
- A shortcut: an icon opens the Copilot website in the built-in browser.
- AI search integration: Copilot may provide additional answers or solutions alongside LG’s search features on supported products.
- Deeper webOS integration: newer or model-specific televisions may combine AI search, voice controls, recommendations, and other personalized features.
LG’s current product material for some AI OLED models describes webOS 25, AI Search, AI Voice ID, personalized recommendations, and access to Microsoft Copilot. Those capabilities are product-specific and may vary by country, language, model, and software version. A browser shortcut should not be treated as proof that every LG TV has the same AI system.
LG’s broader description of webOS also presents it as an evolving media and entertainment platform, not merely firmware for controlling picture settings. That creates a commercial incentive to keep owners engaged with the TV’s operating system.

Why put a chatbot on a television?
There is no need to assume that Microsoft paid LG to place the shortcut; the available evidence does not establish that. The business incentives are clear without making that claim.
An AI feature can:
- Increase the time people spend in the TV’s operating system.
- Make the home screen more valuable for content promotion and advertising.
- Encourage account creation and use of first-party services.
- Differentiate similar television hardware.
- Create partnership opportunities with AI providers.
- Expand search, recommendation, commerce, or subscription opportunities.
- Generate additional interaction data, depending on the service and its settings.
The key change is that the TV’s interface becomes an ongoing revenue platform. The panel may be a one-time purchase, but the software can continue to generate value for the manufacturer and its partners.
AI adds new privacy questions to old smart-TV tracking
Smart-TV privacy is not one single issue. It is a collection of separate data streams that may involve different settings, policies, and companies.
Automatic Content Recognition
Automatic Content Recognition, or ACR, can identify material displayed on the screen. Depending on the product and its settings, that may include broadcast programming, streaming content, advertisements, games, and material arriving through connected devices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsLG’s advertising division describes ACR-related data from programs, films, advertisements, games, and streaming apps displayed on LG Smart TVs. Vizio’s privacy documentation similarly describes viewing data involving programming, advertising, gaming content, connected devices, and third-party apps.
That means the TV may be able to learn what appears on an HDMI-connected device—not only what is played through the TV’s own apps. A TV used as a display for a game console, cable box, computer, or separate streaming player may still be part of the viewing-measurement system if ACR remains enabled.

Other data layers
Disabling ACR does not necessarily disable:
- App-level tracking by Netflix, YouTube, Amazon, or other services.
- Account information and device identifiers.
- Advertising IDs and personalized advertising.
- Crash reports and diagnostic telemetry.
- Content recommendations and home-screen promotions.
- Voice services, voice recordings, transcripts, or voice identification.
- Data collected by a separate streaming device.
Independent testing has found that ACR is only one layer of smart-TV data collection, and that privacy controls can be unclear or distributed across multiple menus and agreements. Turning off “personalized ads” is not the same as stopping collection; it may only change how collected information is used.

What AI changes
Consent becomes harder to understand
A conventional smart-TV setup may already involve LG’s privacy terms, app agreements, advertising choices, voice permissions, and account settings. A chatbot can add the AI provider’s terms, browser telemetry, cloud processing, prompt handling, and possible retention of conversations.
LG said microphone input for Copilot would require explicit customer consent. That addresses one important input channel, but it does not explain every possible flow of information involving the browser, account, viewing context, prompts, or other TV services.
In practical terms, permission to use the microphone is not automatically permission—or a complete explanation—for every other data system surrounding the feature.

Recommendations can look conversational
A conventional sponsored tile is at least visibly an advertisement. A conversational interface can make commercial influence harder to recognize:
- “What should I watch tonight?”
- “Find something like this.”
- “What is popular with people like me?”
- “Show me something available on a service I use.”
Users should be able to tell whether an answer is based on viewing history, editorial judgment, paid prominence, service availability, or an AI-generated ranking. They should also know whether a recommendation is sponsored and whether AI features can be disabled without losing basic television functions.
AI can be wrong
A TV chatbot may give inaccurate answers about film plots, cast members, availability, sports schedules, ratings, parental suitability, or recommendations. There is no established error rate here for LG’s Copilot experience, so the sensible question is not whether the system is always wrong or always useful. It is whether the interface clearly communicates uncertainty and gives users a way to verify important information.
Voice affects the whole household
Televisions are shared devices. Children, guests, and family members may discuss health, finances, relationships, or work in the same room. A privacy review should distinguish between:

- Voice wake-up being enabled.
- Push-to-talk input.
- Voice data being processed locally or sent to the cloud.
- Recordings or transcripts being retained.
- Voice ID or speaker recognition.
- Voice data being used for personalization.
LG markets AI Voice ID and personalized experiences on at least some 2025 AI TV models. That makes the broader voice-and-personalization system more significant than the Copilot shortcut alone.
Regulators are focusing on ACR, not just AI icons
In 2026, Texas reached separate agreements with LG and Samsung concerning ACR consent and disclosures. According to the Texas attorney general, the LG agreement requires informed consent before ACR is used to collect viewing data. The Samsung agreement requires clear, conspicuous disclosures and consent before ACR data collection.
These actions matter because they recognize that viewing information can be collected from a television screen and used in ways consumers may not understand. They do not establish that every TV model nationwide now behaves identically, nor do they mean that all smart-TV tracking has ended. They concern ACR and privacy practices, not necessarily Copilot itself.

Menu names vary by model, region, and webOS version, so treat the following as a verification checklist rather than one universal menu path.
- Identify the feature. Select Copilot and see whether it opens the built-in browser. Check the app-management and home-screen editing tools. Record the model number, webOS version, and firmware version.
- Look for removal controls. Try the home-screen edit or shortcut-management option. If no deletion control exists, check LG support documentation for the exact model and monitor future firmware notes. Do not assume that deleting an icon removes other AI features.
- Review privacy agreements. Look specifically for viewing information, voice information, personalized advertising, recommendations, browser data, and AI-related consent.
- Disable ACR or viewing information where available. The control may be called “Live Plus,” “Viewing Information,” “Viewing Data,” or something else. Confirm that the setting actually changes state.
- Reduce home-screen promotions. Advertising, content recommendations, and ACR may be separate controls. Disable promotions and personalized recommendations if the TV permits it.
- Review voice settings. Turn off voice wake-up if it is unnecessary. Disable Voice ID or personalized voice features where available, and do not grant Copilot microphone permission unless the household wants voice interaction.
- Consider using the TV as a display. Connect an external streaming device and disconnect the television from the internet if its smart features are not needed.
- Do not disable updates blindly. Firmware updates can contain security fixes and changes to privacy controls. Deferring them creates a security trade-off.
Does a separate streaming device solve the problem?
It can reduce reliance on LG’s operating system, but it is not a complete privacy solution.
Using an external player lets you bypass the TV’s home screen, replace the streaming platform without replacing the panel, and sometimes leave the television disconnected from the internet. However, ACR may still inspect HDMI input if it remains enabled. The streaming device and each streaming app also have their own advertising, account, and data practices.

Disconnecting the TV can affect firmware updates, casting, voice functions, smart-home controls, and built-in apps. A streaming device is therefore best understood as platform substitution, not guaranteed privacy.

How to choose a less intrusive setup
Evaluate a television as two products:
- The panel: picture quality, brightness, viewing angle, ports, sound, HDR, and reliability.
- The software platform: advertising, accounts, recommendations, voice features, updates, data collection, and control over the home screen.
Before buying, ask:
- Can it work as a display without an account?
- Can ACR or viewing-data collection be disabled clearly?
- Can home-screen advertising and recommendations be reduced?
- Are voice wake-up and voice identification optional?
- Can the TV remain useful without an internet connection?
- Can firmware updates change the home screen or add services?
- Does the manufacturer explain its data practices in plain language?
- Will an external streamer create a different set of tracking and advertising concerns?
A monitor paired with an external streamer can avoid a traditional TV manufacturer’s home screen, but it may lack a tuner, strong speakers, HDMI-CEC, HDR support, or a convenient remote. Commercial signage displays may offer a more display-first experience, but they can cost more and have weaker consumer features or warranties. A “dumb” display is not automatically private if it includes Wi-Fi or a built-in operating system.
The standard for responsible TV AI
Useful AI features are possible. Voice navigation can improve accessibility, picture processing can help viewers, and better search can reduce the frustration of finding content across multiple services.
The standard should be higher than “the feature can be turned off somewhere.” A responsible AI-TV feature should be:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Clearly labeled as AI, advertising, or sponsored placement.
- Optional at setup and easy to disable later.
- Usable without unnecessary account creation.
- Transparent about cloud processing, prompts, recordings, and retention.
- Separate from microphone permissions where appropriate.
- Clear about whether recommendations are paid, personalized, or editorial.
- Reversible after an update.
- Compatible with using the panel as a basic display.
- Honest about uncertainty and errors.
The bottom line
The Copilot shortcut was irritating because it was visible and initially lacked an obvious removal path. LG’s clarification—that it opened the Copilot website in the TV browser—corrects the most alarming description, but it does not make the underlying trend harmless.
The larger shift is toward televisions that remain commercially active after purchase: measuring displayed content, promoting services, personalizing recommendations, accepting voice input, and adding cloud-based AI through software updates. Disable Copilot if you do not want it, review ACR and voice controls, and consider using the TV as a display with a separate streaming platform. Just remember that every substitute introduces its own privacy and advertising trade-offs.
