But Auto-Fill is not AutoWash. The dock does not wash or dry the mop pad, so you still have hands-on mop maintenance. In the U.S., iRobot lists this configuration at $1,399.99 and says it is unavailable directly, with availability through select retailers. At that price, newer self-washing options are hard to ignore; the j9+ makes more sense when discounted and sold with a full warranty.
What the Combo j9+ is—and which version to look for
“Combo” means the robot vacuums and mops; “j9+” identifies iRobot’s premium j9-generation model with automatic debris disposal. The configuration reviewed here is the Combo j9+ with Clean Base Auto-Fill Dock, product number C975020 on iRobot’s U.S. product page.

Do not confuse it with the vacuum-only Roomba j9+, a Combo j9+ bundle with a standard Auto-Empty dock, or a retailer package that omits automatic water replenishment. Before ordering, check the model number, confirm the dock is explicitly labeled Auto-Fill, and make sure the package includes its water hardware. Check warranty coverage and the return window, especially for open-box or clearance stock.

The j9+ launched in 2023. Its retracting mop and obstacle-recognition features remain useful, but expectations for premium robot docks have changed: newer models offer more automated mop care. iRobot’s current Combo lineup includes newer Plus and Max models; features and dock capabilities vary by model.

What the j9+ improves over older Roombas
A mop that retracts above the floor
The Auto-Retract Mopping System lifts the mop assembly onto the top of the robot, rather than leaving a damp pad close to the floor. iRobot positions this design as a way to vacuum carpet and mop hard floors in the same overall routine without dragging the wet pad across rugs. That is useful in homes where floor types alternate room by room and can reduce the need to mark every rug as a no-mop zone. The design is not a guarantee for every floor: thick or curled rug edges, loose tassels, unstable rugs, and difficult transitions can still cause trouble.
Water replenishment as well as dirt disposal
The Auto-Fill Clean Base refills the robot’s clean-water supply and empties its debris. iRobot estimates up to 30 days of water replenishment and up to 60 days of debris disposal, depending on use. These are manufacturer estimates, not service intervals to count on in every home. A large floor area, frequent runs, multiple pets, or high debris loads can shorten them. They also do not mean the robot or dock can be left untouched for that long.
Camera-based object recognition
Using PrecisionVision navigation, the j9+ identifies and attempts to avoid common objects including cords, socks, shoes, and pet waste, as described in iRobot’s Combo j9+ product materials and Fast Facts. Recognition is not guaranteed avoidance. Small, thin, transparent, or partly hidden objects may be missed, and a camera-based system can be more dependent on lighting than LiDAR navigation. Buyers who do not want a camera-equipped robot should consult iRobot’s current privacy documentation before choosing it; the available product information does not establish specific image-storage or review practices.

iRobot also advertises a Pet Owner Official Promise related to failures to avoid solid pet waste. Read the program terms for eligibility and conditions. It is not a reason to leave pet accidents in the robot’s path.
Room-aware cleaning controls
iRobot OS features include Dirt Detective, which uses cleaning history to prioritize rooms, SmartScrub for more intensive back-and-forth mopping, room-specific cleaning, and personalized suggestions. iRobot claims automatic room labels can reach up to 90% accuracy and that mapping can be up to seven times faster than before. Those are company claims, not independently established results for every layout. Their value depends on whether the map is accurate and the robot’s suggestions fit your routine.

This is the central trade-off. Auto-Fill automates water supply, not mop hygiene. After a run, you still need to remove, wash, and dry the reusable pad as needed. Leaving a dirty pad in use can reduce cleaning effectiveness and spread residue. The dock does not collect dirty water from pad washing because it does not wash the pad.

Cleaning performance: what to expect
The product design supports mixed-floor cleaning, but a feature list cannot establish pickup or stain-removal results in a particular home. Vacuum Wars reported favorable obstacle-avoidance results in its testing and characterized the robot as a high-end vacuum/mop combination; those findings are specific to its tests, not a guarantee for all homes. Vacuuming across carpet and hard floors
Before buying, consider the surfaces that matter in your home: low- and medium-pile carpet, hard flooring, textured grout, rugs with exposed edges, and transitions between surfaces. Pay attention to pet hair, larger crumbs, fine debris, and material along walls. No cited test establishes universal pickup performance for all these conditions. Thick rug edges, tall thresholds, and loose or sliding rugs deserve particular attention in a real-world trial.
Mopping is for routine upkeep
SmartScrub is intended to provide more intensive back-and-forth mopping, but it does not turn a robot into a substitute for manual scrubbing. Dried grease, sticky spills, grout discoloration, heavy stains, edges, and corners may still need direct attention. No robot’s central-floor cleaning should be taken as proof of perfect corner coverage.
The retracting mop makes a combined vacuum-and-mop routine possible, not automatically ideal for every job. For a floor with substantial loose debris, a vacuum-first run may be preferable. How well the pad stays damp, how consistently the mop retracts, and how much residue it leaves are practical questions to assess for your floor and cleaning settings.

Mapping, app setup, and daily control
iRobot’s product materials require Wi-Fi and say a software update is needed before initial use. The materials refer to the iRobot Home App, while newer products are associated with a newer Roomba Home app. Do not assume every generation has identical menus or controls; use the app and instructions identified for your exact model and region.

- Complete any required software update before the first cleaning mission.
- Run an initial mapping mission, then check room names and boundaries.
- Correct the map and add no-go or no-mop zones where needed.
- Set up a room-specific cleaning routine and test it before relying on a schedule.
- Try a mixed carpet-and-hard-floor run and confirm the robot returns to its dock as expected.
Room labeling and Dirt Detective can reduce repeated setup, but map quality remains important. If a map is misplaced or incomplete, correct it using the controls available in the current app rather than assuming the robot has understood the layout. Exact menu names can differ with software version.

The Auto-Fill Clean Base is a substantial appliance, not just a charging stand. iRobot lists its dimensions at approximately 15.8 inches wide, 16.4 inches deep, and 16.3 inches high on the dimensions page. Measure the intended location, including the space needed to access the water containers and service the dock. Leave the approach clear enough for docking, avoid placing it where a spill would damage carpet, and make sure its top-loading water system will not be obstructed.

Even with automatic emptying and replenishment, routine ownership includes:
- Replacing disposal bags and checking or refilling the water supply.
- Removing hair from the brush assembly and checking rollers and the edge brush.
- Cleaning or replacing the filter and wiping sensors and charging contacts.
- Washing and drying the mop pad, and replacing it when worn or ineffective.
- Inspecting the robot’s mop mechanism and the dock for debris or water buildup.
Use only cleaning liquids confirmed for this exact model. iRobot warns that unauthorized solutions may void the warranty and advises against hot water or water mixed with vinegar; consult its cleaning-solution guidance. Do not assume a solution listed for newer models is compatible with the j9+. The current product page should be checked against model-specific support guidance.

Compared with the Combo j5+ and Combo j7+
The j9+’s clearest step up is the Auto-Fill configuration: it combines automatic debris disposal with clean-water replenishment, while its mop retracts onto the top of the robot. The j5+ and j7+ are also vacuum-and-mop models, but their bundles and docks differ. The j9+ still does not wash or dry its mop pad. Because retailer packages can vary, verify the exact dock and mop hardware rather than relying on the model family name alone.
Compared with newer Roomba Plus and Max models
iRobot’s 2025 product announcement describes a newer generation that includes AutoWash dock options; the current Combo lineup identifies the Plus 405, Plus 505, and Max 705 families. These are not interchangeable configurations. Check the individual model’s dock, carpet behavior, navigation, app support, and current price. If mop washing and drying matter more than the j9+’s retracting-mop design, a newer AutoWash model is the more relevant comparison.
Compared with Roborock’s S8 Max Ultra
Roborock’s U.S. product page for the S8 Max Ultra lists hot-water mop washing, heated-air drying, detergent dispensing, self-refilling, and dock self-cleaning. Those features address the j9+’s largest ownership gap: manual pad care. The same page showed $1,299.99 when checked for this comparison, but price and availability change. Roborock also lists edge-mopping hardware, while navigation and obstacle-avoidance systems differ from iRobot’s camera-based approach. Compare the current configuration and sale price, not just the product name.
Who should buy the Combo j9+?
- Consider it if your home has both carpet and hard floors, keeping rugs dry is a priority, and you value camera-based object recognition plus automatic water replenishment.
- Consider it at a discount if the exact Auto-Fill configuration is sold by a seller offering a full warranty and return period, and you accept washing the pad yourself.
- Choose a vacuum-only Roomba if most of your home is carpet and you mop occasionally by hand; it avoids paying for a mopping system you may rarely use.
- Look at a newer self-washing model if frequent mopping and less hands-on pad care matter more than the j9+’s retracting mop.
- Compare other brands if you prioritize LiDAR navigation, automatic pad washing and drying, or edge-mopping hardware, and are comfortable with a different app ecosystem.
The U.S. iRobot listing shows $1,399.99 and says the product is unavailable directly, with select-retailer availability. That makes the seller, exact dock, warranty, return terms, and live price essential parts of the decision. At or near that list price, the lack of mop washing and drying weighs heavily against the j9+ when newer premium alternatives are similarly priced. At a substantial discount, its carpet-oriented retracting mop and combined vacuum-and-mop design can still make it a compelling fit for the right mixed-floor home.
