The Samsung HW-Q90R is the stronger out-of-the-box home-theater system: it includes a subwoofer and rear speakers in a 7.1.4-channel package. The Sonos Arc is the easier standalone soundbar to set up and the better fit for Wi-Fi music, multi-room audio and a Sonos household. This is not a like-for-like comparison: to match the Samsung’s included surround components, you would need to add a Sonos subwoofer and rear speakers.
Complete surround system or single soundbar?
The most important difference is what comes in the box. Samsung describes the HW-Q90R as a 7.1.4-channel system with wireless rear speakers; its package also includes a wireless subwoofer. The Sonos Arc is a single soundbar with 11 internal speakers, including upward-firing drivers. It has no included subwoofer or rear speakers.

Samsung: physical rear speakers and more room-filling impact
The Q90R’s main advantage is not just its channel count: its separate rear speakers can be positioned behind or beside the seating area, and its included subwoofer handles low-frequency effects. In a room where the speakers can be placed properly, that gives it a stronger starting point for effects moving around the listener, overhead cues and forceful movie playback.
#1 Best Overall
- All-new acoustic architecture with Sound Motion technology fills every inch of the room and precisely place sounds all around you
- Unparalleled 9.1.4 spatial audio experience with Dolby Atmos
- Ultra-clear dialogue plus Speech Enhancement, powered by AI, detects the human voice to clarify every word
- Elegant design looks great in your home and won’t distract from your entertainment
- Control with your TV remote, the Sonos app, the touch controls, Sonos Voice Control, and Amazon Alexa
Sonos Arc alone: a wide front stage without satellites
The Arc uses drivers inside the bar, including upward-firing height channels, to create a broad front presentation and height effects. It is a more practical choice when you do not want speakers and power cables behind the seating. It cannot provide the same physical rear-speaker placement as the complete Samsung package. Adding compatible Sonos surrounds and a subwoofer changes the comparison, but also changes the system’s cost and installation.
Room geometry still matters
Neither Atmos label guarantees convincing sound from above. Upward-firing effects depend on ceiling height, angle and reflectivity, along with soundbar clearance and the distance to side walls. Open-plan layouts, absorbent furnishings and seating against a wall can weaken reflected effects or make rear placement difficult. If you can put speakers behind the seats, the Q90R is the more immersive ready-made option; if you cannot, the Arc’s simpler front-only layout may suit the room better. A conventional receiver-and-speaker setup may be a better solution for unusually open rooms or buyers seeking more control over speaker placement.
Bass, dialogue and listening volume
Bass and scale
The Samsung includes a dedicated wireless subwoofer, so it has the out-of-box advantage for explosions, deep soundtrack notes, bass-heavy music and louder playback in a larger room. The Arc alone has no separate subwoofer. Pairing the Arc with a Sonos Sub or Sub Mini narrows the bass gap, but it is no longer a comparison with the Arc alone.

Both systems offer center-channel processing and dialogue-related adjustments. Sonos lists speech enhancement features for the Arc lineup; Samsung provides sound modes and center-channel level adjustment. That does not establish a universal dialogue winner: the mix, seating distance, room reflections and TV position all affect intelligibility. Try a familiar dialogue-heavy scene at your normal listening level if possible.

Maximum impact
The Q90R’s separate subwoofer and rear speakers give the complete package a clear practical advantage when the goal is a large, enveloping movie presentation. The Arc is better judged as a premium single-bar system, not as an equal substitute for every speaker included with the Samsung.
Music, streaming and smart-home use
Sonos is the stronger music platform
The Arc connects over Wi-Fi and fits into the Sonos app and multi-room system. Sonos lists AirPlay 2, Trueplay and voice-control options including Sonos Voice Control and, where available, Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It is the more natural fit if you already have Sonos speakers or want to play music around the home and add compatible components over time.
Samsung favors direct, forceful playback
The Q90R’s included subwoofer and rear speakers can make music sound larger and more physical, especially when the track benefits from bass and room-filling output. Bluetooth and its HDMI inputs also suit people who prefer direct device connections. That is a hardware advantage for impact, not a replacement for Sonos’s networked music and multi-room features.
Choose Sonos for the connected listening experience; choose the complete Samsung package if movie-scale bass and a speaker at each end of the room matter more than ecosystem features.

HDMI, ARC and eARC: what your TV must support
Sonos Arc connection
The Arc connects to a TV through HDMI ARC or eARC. Sonos says an ARC/eARC connection is required for Dolby Atmos from a TV; its specifications identify eARC for higher-bandwidth formats, including lossless Dolby Atmos variants. An optical adapter is included for compatible optical-only TVs, but optical is not an Atmos path for the Arc.
Samsung Q90R connection
The Q90R has HDMI inputs and a TV ARC connection. Its manual says Dolby Atmos is supported in HDMI mode. Connecting a source directly to a soundbar input can avoid some limits imposed by an older television’s audio pass-through, but the result depends on the source, audio format, TV and settings; it is not a guarantee of compatibility with every modern console or format.
Atmos can arrive in different formats
Streaming Atmos is commonly carried in Dolby Digital Plus, while disc-based or local-file Atmos may use Dolby TrueHD. ARC and eARC do not carry the same bandwidth, and an Atmos badge on a title does not prove that every device in the chain is passing the format. Confirm the exact TV, source and connection path. Sonos explains its TV Atmos requirements and how to check the decoded format in the app in its Dolby Atmos support guide.

Gaming and multiple HDMI devices
The Q90R is more flexible if you want to connect several sources directly to the soundbar: it has HDMI inputs as well as a TV ARC output. The Arc has a single HDMI connection to the TV, so the TV must switch between a console, streaming box and other devices and pass their audio formats through correctly.

- Enrich your entertainment experience with vibrant bass, crystal clear dialogue, and a panoramic soundstage.
- Experience a 3D surround sound effect with Dolby Atmos.
- Stream music, radio, podcasts, and audiobooks from all your favorite services when the TV is off.
- Control with the Sonos app, your TV remote, Apple AirPlay 2, and your voice.
- Effortless setup with only two cables and smart Trueplay tuning.
For either system, the practical result depends on the particular television, console, HDMI cable and audio settings. Check whether your TV supports the desired format over ARC or eARC, set audio output to passthrough or bitstream where appropriate, and test the console’s Atmos setting with your exact connection. Do not assume that a format supported by the console will be passed unchanged by the TV.
Setup, space and day-to-day ownership
Q90R: more components to place and verify
The Samsung package needs space and power for the subwoofer and rear speakers in addition to the bar. The wireless link avoids running speaker cable back to the bar, but each component still needs sensible placement and power. When buying used, missing remotes, cables, mounting hardware or speakers can turn a supposedly complete system into a difficult repair project.
Arc: a simpler initial installation
The Arc needs one HDMI connection to the TV and is easier to accommodate in a minimalist living room or apartment. Setup and room tuning run through the Sonos app, with Trueplay available subject to Sonos’s current requirements. Adding surrounds and a subwoofer later is convenient for an existing Sonos household, but adds devices, placement needs and expense.

Buying an older Q90R used
The Q90R is a 2019-era model and is more likely to appear as remaining, refurbished or used inventory than as a current Samsung US retail product. Age makes condition and completeness central to value: wireless modules, drivers and replacement components may be harder to source, and ongoing firmware or app compatibility is less predictable than for a current product. Samsung continues to provide support documentation, including guidance for rear-speaker and subwoofer problems, but that is not a promise of parts availability. See Samsung’s HW-Q90R troubleshooting support.
Best Value
- Surround yourself in the story: Go deeper into every scene with spatial audio. Dolby Atmos and the upward-firing drivers work in concert to immerse you in a multidimensional soundstage. You’ll hear planes as if they’re flying overhead, sense footsteps moving across the room, and feel the music swell all around you.
- Feel the bass: Experience every rumble, roar, and beat you've been missing with clean, pulse-pounding bass. Sub 4 takes over the lowest frequencies so paired speakers are free to focus on midrange and high frequencies so everything sounds even clearer.
- Wonderfully wireless: Place Sub 4 anywhere in the room. It connects to the soundbar over WiFi, so you can create the setup that works best for your space.
- Perfectly tuned for the room: Using the microphones in your iOS device, Trueplay tuning technology analyzes the unique acoustics of your space and optimizes the EQ. So all your content sounds just the way it should.
- Breeze through setup: Simply plug in the power cable, connect your phone or tablet to WiFi, and open the Sonos app. It will guide you through connecting the soundbar to your TV and syncing your TV remote for streamlined control.
Before paying for a used system, ask the seller to demonstrate the complete set rather than relying on a listing photo:
- Soundbar powers on and responds to controls.
- Subwoofer and both rear speakers pair and produce sound.
- HDMI input and TV ARC connection work.
- A genuine multichannel source plays through the rear speakers.
- The system remains connected during extended playback without dropouts.
- Remote, power cables and any promised mounting hardware are present.
Do not assume a Q90R bar sold by itself can be completed easily with generic replacement speakers.

The Sonos US product page listed the Arc at $899 when observed for this comparison; that is a page-observed US price, not a guaranteed current price or a price for an expanded system. No reliable current official Samsung US retail price was established for the older Q90R, so a used-market figure should be judged by the specific listing, its condition and included components. | Buying scenario | What the price buys | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| New Sonos Arc alone | One soundbar; subwoofer and rear speakers are extra | Buyers who want a simple install, streaming and a path to expand |
| Used complete Samsung HW-Q90R | Potentially a full surround set, if bar, subwoofer and both rear speakers work | Buyers who can test the kit and prioritize theater impact over new-product support |
| Sonos Arc with subwoofer and rear speakers | Expanded Sonos system; total cost depends on the components and current local prices | Sonos households wanting both surround playback and multi-room integration |
The Q90R is a compelling value only when it is complete, fully tested and priced to reflect its age and used-market risk. The Arc is easier to justify when you want a current Sonos starting point and expect to value the app, AirPlay 2 or multi-room expansion more than maximum out-of-box theater impact. Sonos’s current lineup also includes the Arc Ultra, a higher-tier single-bar alternative; its official comparison page is here.
Which should you buy?
Choose the Samsung HW-Q90R if
- You want rear speakers and a subwoofer included from day one.
- You have room to place the rears near or behind the seating and can accommodate extra power connections.
- Movie immersion, bass and loud playback matter more than multi-room streaming.
- You can verify that a used or refurbished set is complete and working.
Choose the Sonos Arc if
- You want one cleanly installed soundbar rather than satellites around the room.
- You already use Sonos or care about AirPlay 2, Wi-Fi music and multi-room audio.
- You want to start with a bar and decide later whether to add a subwoofer or surrounds.
- You prefer a current retail product over the condition and parts uncertainty of older used hardware.
Consider another kind of system if
The Q90R listing is incomplete or untestable, or your room cannot accommodate rear speakers and you want stronger surround than a single bar can provide. A newer complete soundbar package may suit buyers who want current hardware with included satellites; a receiver and passive speakers offer more placement and upgrade flexibility at the cost of a more involved installation.
