The headline was real, but the robot did not “become racist.” In May 2024, attackers reportedly took control of Ecovacs Deebot X2-family robot vacuums in Minnesota, Los Angeles and El Paso. They remotely drove at least some devices, used their speakers to broadcast racist abuse, and accessed functions including live camera controls. The incidents exposed a serious smart-home security problem—not an artificial-intelligence mishap.
The cases were detailed by ABC News in October 2024.

What happened?
On May 24, 2024, a Minnesota owner named Daniel Swenson reported that his Ecovacs Deebot X2 robot vacuum began behaving as though someone else was controlling it. After initially sounding like a broken radio transmission, the robot moved again even after he changed his password and rebooted it. Swenson then saw indications in the Ecovacs app that another person could access the robot’s camera and controls.
The attacker used the robot’s speaker to broadcast racist abuse in front of Swenson’s family. The language was delivered by the person controlling the device; there is no evidence that the vacuum independently generated the words or that an onboard AI system was involved.

ABC reported similar incidents involving an X2-family robot in Los Angeles, where a device was reportedly driven around to chase a dog, and another in El Paso, where a robot broadcast racial abuse late at night until its owner unplugged it. The number of affected devices is unknown.
What could the attackers control?
According to the reporting and related security research, the relevant X2 robots could expose more than cleaning controls:
- Remote movement and steering
- The onboard speaker
- A live camera feed
- Potentially microphone-enabled surveillance
- The warning sound intended to indicate camera use
That makes the abuse more than a bizarre nuisance. A compromised robot could potentially move through rooms, show low-angle views of a home, hear nearby conversations, and reveal household routines. However, the available reports do not prove that every attacker recorded, watched or exfiltrated audio or video. They establish exposure of those functions, not universal surveillance.

How might the robots have been hacked?
The exact attack path has not been conclusively established for every incident. Several possibilities were reported.
Credential stuffing
Ecovacs reportedly told Swenson that credential stuffing was a high possibility. In this type of attack, criminals reuse a username-and-password combination stolen from another service. If the same password was used for an Ecovacs account, an attacker may be able to sign in without breaking Ecovacs’ own systems.
Ecovacs said it found no evidence that its systems had been breached. That statement does not prove credential stuffing was the cause in every case; it was the company’s explanation for at least one reported compromise.

Weak PIN enforcement
Security researchers Dennis Giese and Braelynn Luedtke had demonstrated weaknesses in the four-digit PIN intended to protect video and remote-control features. Their finding, as described by ABC, was that validation occurred in the client application rather than being robustly enforced by the server or robot. In practical terms, a security check that should have been authoritative could potentially be bypassed by a modified or unauthorized client.

Ecovacs said the PIN issue had been fixed. Giese told ABC that he considered the fix insufficient, so the effectiveness of that remediation was disputed.
Bluetooth exposure
The researchers also demonstrated a Bluetooth vulnerability that could allow complete access to an Ecovacs X2 from more than 100 metres away. That is a serious local attack surface, but it should not be described as the confirmed cause of the reported incidents. ABC indicated that the geographically separated attacks were unlikely to have all relied on that particular Bluetooth weakness.

What affected owners should do
- Unplug the robot if it moves unexpectedly, speaks without user action, or shows unexplained camera activity. This is the fastest containment step.
- Change the Ecovacs account password to a long, unique password that has never been used elsewhere.
- Change reused passwords on any other services sharing the old credentials.
- Enable multifactor authentication if it is available for the account and region.
- Update the Ecovacs app and robot firmware. Availability can vary by model, country and hardware revision.
- Review active sessions, paired devices and sharing permissions wherever those controls are available. App labels differ by version and country.
- Disable camera, microphone, live-view and remote-control features that are not needed.
- Contact Ecovacs support and preserve evidence, including dates, screenshots, notifications, network logs and recordings of unusual behavior.
- Factory-reset or retire the robot if unauthorized access continues. A reset should be performed alongside account security changes; it may not remove a cloud-side account compromise by itself.
- Check the home router and other accounts if there are signs that credentials or additional smart-home devices may also be compromised.
A router-level block may reduce internet exposure, but it can also disable normal app operation and may not stop every permitted cloud-control path. Physical unplugging sacrifices automation but is the clearest immediate safety measure.
Does this mean every Ecovacs vacuum is unsafe?
No. The documented reports concern multiple Deebot X2-family units, not every Ecovacs product or every X2 owner. The total number of compromised devices, the precise exploit used in each case, and the relevant firmware versions remain unclear.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Before buying or continuing to use one, check whether it supports multifactor authentication, receives security updates, permits local-only operation, continues working when internet access is blocked, and provides clear controls for camera, microphone, account sessions and data sharing. A model without audio or video hardware may reduce the privacy impact, although it can still have an internet-connected account and control channel.
What remains unknown
- Whether the reported attackers used stolen credentials, the PIN weakness, another app or cloud weakness, or a combination.
- How many robots were accessed.
- Whether any video or audio was recorded or removed from the devices.
- Whether all affected units used the same firmware or account-security practices.
- Whether the same vulnerability affected other Deebot models.
The safest interpretation is therefore narrow and evidence-based: hackers reportedly hijacked connected Ecovacs Deebot X2-family robots and used their movement, speakers and potentially surveillance hardware to harass owners. The robots did not independently formulate racist speech, and the reports do not establish that every owner or every Ecovacs vacuum was affected.
