Yes—a faulty electrolytic capacitor can look completely normal. A flat top, clean sleeve, and dry circuit board do not prove that the capacitor is healthy. It may have excessive equivalent series resistance (ESR), high leakage, reduced capacitance, an intermittent internal connection, or a fault that appears only when the circuit is hot or under load.
The reliable rule is: inspect visually, test electrically, then verify the circuit while operating.

Why visual inspection is not enough
Bulging, leaking electrolyte, a pushed-out base, discoloration, corrosion, and a damaged safety vent are valuable warning signs. They often indicate a capacitor that should be replaced immediately. However, these are usually visible or late-stage failures. Electrical degradation can occur while the aluminum can remains flat and the sleeve looks perfect.

- ESR can rise without visible swelling.
- Leakage current can exceed the specification while capacitance remains near its marked value.
- Capacitance can fall enough to affect filtering without producing an obvious physical symptom.
- An internal foil, tab, terminal, or lead connection can become intermittent.
- The capacitor may fail only with ripple current, operating voltage, temperature, or mechanical vibration.
Failure-analysis guidance from KEMET identifies multiple failure modes, including high ESR, high leakage, low capacitance, open circuits, compromised connections, corrosion, contamination, and vibration-related faults.

Visual signs worth checking
- Domed, split, or ruptured top
- Electrolyte residue around the vent or rubber seal
- A pushed-out bottom or swollen case
- Discolored or damaged shrink sleeve
- Corrosion around terminals
- Burn marks or heat-darkened PCB material
- Cracked solder joints or lifted pads
- Contamination beneath or around a surface-mount capacitor
A capacitor with none of these signs has passed only a visual screening step—not a complete health check.
The hidden failure modes
High ESR and excessive loss
Equivalent series resistance is the effective resistance of a real capacitor’s internal losses. A useful simplified model is:
Real capacitor ≈ ideal capacitance + ESR + ESL + leakage path
ESR represents losses associated with the electrolyte, foil, separator, terminals, and internal connections. When ripple current flows through ESR, the capacitor dissipates heat:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
P ≈ I_RMS² × ESR
That heat can accelerate electrolyte loss and cause ESR to rise further. This creates a damaging cycle. Panasonic’s technical guidance explains the relationship between ESR, loss, and capacitor heating.
Typical symptoms include excessive supply ripple, switching-power-supply instability, startup failure, random resets, weak audio or hum, local heating, regulation errors, and faults that become worse after warm-up.
ESR is frequency-dependent. A value measured at 100 kHz cannot automatically be compared with a datasheet impedance or ESR value specified at 100 Hz, 120 Hz, 1 kHz, or another condition. Frequency, temperature, test voltage, and measurement method all matter.

Excessive leakage current
A capacitor with excessive leakage can pull down a supply rail, overheat a resistor or regulator, extend startup time, disturb bias voltages, or drain a battery. It may appear to charge normally on a simple meter but fail to settle to the manufacturer’s specified leakage current.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA low-voltage ohmmeter test is not a proper leakage test. Leakage must be evaluated with controlled DC voltage, correct polarity, current limiting, and an appropriate settling time. The allowable current depends on capacitance, rated voltage, series, temperature, and the manufacturer’s test conditions.
Reduced capacitance
Reduced capacitance can increase ripple, reduce hold-up time, weaken low-frequency filtering, and affect motor-control, timing, coupling, or decoupling circuits. Do not assume that every reading below the printed value proves failure; electrolytic capacitors have specified tolerances, and the datasheet is the authority.
Open, short, and intermittent faults
A failed tab, terminal, lead connection, corroded joint, or mechanically damaged internal structure can produce an open or intermittent circuit. The part may pass a static test and fail when heated, cooled, flexed, or subjected to ripple current.
Short circuits or abnormally high leakage can result from reverse voltage, overvoltage, excessive ripple, surge current, contamination, or mechanical damage. Panasonic discusses these stress-related failure modes in its guidance on overvoltage, reverse voltage, and excessive ripple.

A basic capacitance function is useful for finding gross faults, but it does not measure every characteristic that matters in a working circuit. The test may use a low voltage, a brief charging method, and a single frequency. It may not measure ESR, dissipation factor, leakage under working voltage, or temperature-dependent behavior.

A capacitor can retain approximately its nominal capacitance while its ESR becomes excessive. Conversely, an in-circuit meter can display a misleading value because of parallel capacitors, resistors, semiconductor junctions, coils, transformers, or PCB traces. Leakage can also confuse the instrument and produce an apparently high capacitance.
Therefore, a normal capacitance reading does not prove that the capacitor is suitable under its actual ripple, load, voltage, frequency, and temperature conditions.
A practical test sequence
1. Make the equipment safe
Disconnect mains power, allow the equipment to discharge, and verify voltage with a meter before touching the board. Discharge capacitors using an appropriate controlled method and suitable resistor or tooling. Do not use a screwdriver to create a spark.
Mains supplies, CRT equipment, high-voltage amplifiers, motor drives, and large DC-link capacitors can retain dangerous energy after being unplugged. Do not rely solely on a power switch or bleeder resistor. An ESR meter’s automatic-discharge feature applies only to the instrument’s test procedure; it does not make the entire circuit safe. For example, the B&K Precision 881 specifies automatic discharge during testing, but the equipment under repair must still be independently verified as de-energized.
2. Inspect the circuit, not just the capacitor
Look for nearby heat sources, darkened PCB material, cracked solder joints, corrosion, reversed polarity, and signs of contamination. Check rectifiers, regulators, MOSFETs, switching transistors, resistors, and loads that may have subjected the capacitor to excessive ripple, overvoltage, reverse voltage, or heat.
A visually normal capacitor may be an innocent casualty rather than the root cause.

- Additional Tips - The following incorrect operations may cause the multimeter not to show results: Firstly, the plugs of test leads are not fully inserted or not inserted into the correct sockets. Secondly, the manual rotary switch is not placed in the correct position. In addition, this meter can not test all AC Current and below 100mV AC Voltage. Please check the user manual carefully before measurement.

- Ease of Use - Support Data Hold and Continuity Buzzer. Includes Convenient feature like LCD Backlit Screen makes it easy to use in dimly light areas. Batteries/Set of Test Leads/User Manual are Included.
3. Screen with an ESR meter
An ESR meter is particularly useful for quickly screening electrolytics in power supplies and filters. The B&K Precision Model 881, for example, specifies a 0.47 µF to 2,200 µF range, a 100 kHz test output, and a 15 mV peak-to-peak test voltage. Its stated in-circuit capability is useful, but an in-circuit result is not automatically conclusive.
- Verify that the board is discharged.
- Identify the capacitor’s capacitance, voltage, polarity, and circuit position.
- Check the meter’s range and test frequency.
- Measure the suspect part.
- Compare it with the manufacturer’s data, a known-good part of the same type, or similar capacitors on the board.
- If the result is ambiguous, lift one lead or remove the capacitor and test again.
Do not apply a universal ESR threshold. Acceptable ESR varies with capacitance, voltage, series, frequency, temperature, and application.
4. Confirm with an LCR meter
An LCR meter can measure capacitance, ESR or impedance, dissipation factor, tangent delta, and frequency-dependent behavior. This is usually more informative out of circuit. Select a test frequency relevant to the application, and compare results with the capacitor’s datasheet rather than relying only on the printed capacitance.
5. Test leakage when it matters
Use a current-limited DC source, observe polarity, raise voltage cautiously, and monitor both current and voltage. Allow appropriate settling time only when suitable for that capacitor and application. Stop for abnormal heating, odor, venting, or rising or unstable current.
There is no universal leakage-current limit. Use the manufacturer’s specified test voltage, time, temperature, and maximum current.
6. Check ripple in the operating circuit
When it is safe to energize the equipment, measure the DC rail and AC ripple with an oscilloscope. Check startup and loaded operation, and observe whether the fault changes with temperature. Use suitable probe grounding, bandwidth settings, isolation procedures, and differential probes where required. Energized measurements can be more dangerous than removed-component tests.

| Unstable reading | Intermittent connection, leakage, poor contact, or in-circuit interference | Test out of circuit and under controlled conditions. |
| Short reading | Failed capacitor or another component in parallel | Isolate the part before concluding. |
Choosing the replacement
A suitable replacement must match more than capacitance and voltage. Check:
- Capacitance and polarity
- Rated voltage
- Temperature rating
- Ripple-current rating
- Impedance or ESR requirements
- Endurance or life rating
- Diameter, height, lead spacing, and mounting
- Safety approvals where applicable
- Frequency and application requirements
For power supplies, ripple-current rating, endurance, temperature, and impedance can be more important than simply choosing the same printed value. A higher voltage rating may be electrically acceptable, but the replacement can have different dimensions, leakage, ESR, ripple rating, or startup behavior.
Do not automatically choose the lowest-ESR part. Some feedback-controlled switching supplies are designed around a particular output impedance range, and a major ESR change can affect loop stability. Unless the circuit has been analyzed, the original series or a manufacturer-approved equivalent is the safer choice.

Liquid aluminum electrolytics, solid tantalum, conductive polymer, film, and ceramic capacitors have different construction and failure behavior. Panasonic notes that polymer capacitors generally offer substantially lower ESR than conventional liquid-electrolyte aluminum types, but that does not make them universal drop-in replacements. Selection information is available from Panasonic’s aluminum-capacitor resources and its conductive-polymer resources.
When the capacitor is not the root cause
Capacitor replacement can restore operation temporarily while leaving the original fault in place. Investigate failed rectifiers, switching devices, regulators, excessive loads, poor cooling, incorrect polarity, overvoltage, and abnormal ripple current. A capacitor that failed because of an upstream problem may fail again.
“Recap everything” can be a reasonable strategy for certain equipment with a known history of failure, but it is not a substitute for diagnosis. Blanket replacement can introduce reversed polarity, wrong values, damaged pads, counterfeit parts, and unsuitable ESR.
The bottom line
A flat-topped electrolytic capacitor is only a capacitor that has not visibly failed. It is not proof that its electrical characteristics remain within specification. Use visual inspection to find obvious damage, ESR and LCR testing to examine the component, leakage testing when relevant, and oscilloscope measurements to confirm what the circuit does under real voltage, load, ripple, and temperature conditions.
