Our top pick is the Nespresso Vertuo Lattissima for households that want coffee and one-touch milk drinks. Choose the CitiZ & Milk instead if you mainly drink espresso and want broader capsule flexibility; the Vertuo Pop+ is the value choice, the Vertuo Up suits iced-coffee drinkers and narrow counters, and the Vertuo Creatista is the premium milk-drink option.
Before comparing machines, decide between Nespresso’s two incompatible systems. OriginalLine machines use espresso-style capsules, including many third-party options. Vertuo machines brew more sizes, including large coffees and XL drinks, but use a more restricted proprietary capsule format.

OriginalLine vs. Vertuo: choose the system first
Choose OriginalLine if you mainly drink espresso
OriginalLine machines are built around espresso and lungo servings. They are a better fit for cappuccinos, lattes, Americanos, and espresso-based recipes. Their traditional capsule format also has a much broader third-party market, which can make it easier to find alternatives and manage long-term capsule costs.
#1 Best Overall
- SIGNATURE COFFEES AND ESPRESSOS: Vertuo Pop+ coffee maker offers a variety of coffee formats in 5 sizes, including 5, 8, 12oz coffees, as well as single and double espressos brewed hot or over ice.
- COMPACT: Compact design to fit small spaces, with removable 25 fl. oz water tank placed on the side for easy access and refill.
- SIMPLE AND CONVENIENT: One-touch coffee system, 30 second heat up time with descaling alert and adjustable drip tray.
- PRECISION BREWING: unlocks a smooth full-bodied coffee topped with a velvety layer of coffee foam, for a perfect cup every time.
- SUSTAINABILITY: Nespresso capsules are fully recyclable. Recycle the aluminum capsules through Nespresso's free program.
Models such as the CitiZ & Milk and Essenza Mini use programmable espresso and lungo controls. They are not the right choice if your normal drink is an 8-, 12-, or 18-ounce coffee.
Choose Vertuo if you want large coffees
Vertuo machines read a barcode on each capsule and automatically set the brewing parameters. Depending on the model and capsule, they make espresso, double espresso, gran lungo, coffee, XL, and over-ice drinks.
The trade-off is supply and cost. Vertuo capsules are substantially more proprietary, and many cost more than OriginalLine capsules. A comparison cited roughly $0.90 for an Original capsule versus about $1.25–$1.55 for many Vertuo capsules, although the actual price depends on size, blend, retailer, pack, and date. See the current Vertuo capsule range before committing.
OriginalLine and Vertuo capsules are not interchangeable. A package labeled “Nespresso-compatible” does not automatically work in both systems.
The five best Nespresso machines
1. Nespresso Vertuo Lattissima: best overall
Best for: Households that want large coffees, cappuccinos, and lattes from one machine.
The Vertuo Lattissima is the most broadly useful choice in this lineup. It combines Vertuo’s range of drink sizes with an integrated milk system and one-touch recipes. Nespresso lists approximately 30 seconds for coffee heat-up and three seconds for the milk system. Current hands-on coverage also praised its compact design, adjustable stand, automatic brewing, and range of milk drinks.
What it makes: Vertuo espresso, larger coffee formats, and automatic milk drinks, subject to the capsule and programmed recipe.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Main drawbacks: The milk container and waste bin are relatively small, so busy households may empty them often. It is also larger and more expensive than a basic Pop+ or espresso-focused OriginalLine model. Integrated milk convenience means more rinsing and cleaning than a machine without milk hardware.

- AUTOMATIC COFFEE/ESPRESSO MACHINE: Create barista grade brewed single serve coffee or espresso cups at the touch of a single button Designed for use with Nespresso Vertuo capsules only
- SMART COFFEE MAKER: Brew the perfect single serve coffee or espresso drink time after time, thanks to Nespresso’s Centrifusion technology using barcodes to deliver the best in-cup results including the perfect crema for large coffee cup sizes
- COFFEE FOR EVERY TASTE: Bold or mild, hot or iced, there’s a blend for you
Who should buy it: Buyers who want the easiest all-purpose machine and accept Vertuo capsule costs.
Who should skip it: People who want manual control over milk texture, dislike cleaning milk equipment, or want the broadest third-party capsule choice. See the official Vertuo Lattissima page.
2. Nespresso CitiZ & Milk: best OriginalLine machine
Best for: Espresso and lungo drinkers who want a simple milk option.
The CitiZ & Milk is the strongest choice here for the OriginalLine ecosystem. Independent testing found strong espresso, dense crema, easy controls, and approximately a 35.2-fluid-ounce water capacity. Its Aeroccino frother adds milk capability without requiring a separate purchase.
What it makes: Programmable espresso and lungo drinks. Milk is frothed separately and poured into the drink.
Main drawbacks: It is less suitable for large mug coffee, and its milk workflow is not one-touch. Construction is less premium than the Creatista range. Third-party capsule compatibility is broad but still varies by manufacturer and capsule design.
Who should buy it: Espresso drinkers who value OriginalLine flexibility and want convenient foam.

3. Nespresso Vertuo Pop+: best value
Best for: First-time buyers, small kitchens, and budget-conscious coffee drinkers.
The Pop+ offers five Vertuo drink sizes, a removable water reservoir, and support for espresso, double espresso, gran lungo, coffee, and XL formats. Current testing lists an approximately 8.6-by-14-by-10.4-inch footprint and a 25.4-fluid-ounce water capacity. Observed U.S. pricing has commonly been around $100–$130, depending on the sale and bundle.
What it makes: A broad range of Vertuo capsule sizes, including larger coffees and selected cold-brew or iced formats.
Recommended Free Tools
Main drawbacks: There is no milk frother. The shorter cup clearance can make taller mugs awkward, the smaller reservoir requires more refilling, and testing has noted that coffee may not be especially hot and that the machine can drip after brewing.
Who should buy it: Someone who wants inexpensive entry into Vertuo and does not need built-in milk preparation.
Who should skip it: Heavy households, tall-travel-mug users, and latte drinkers who do not want to buy a separate frother. See comparative testing from Tom’s Guide and Good Housekeeping.
4. Nespresso Vertuo Up: best for iced coffee and flexible placement
Best for: Iced-coffee drinkers and very narrow counters.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe Vertuo Up is a meaningful alternative to the Pop+, not simply a newer-looking version. Its rotating water tank can sit behind the machine or on either side, and testing measured the body at approximately 4.7 inches wide. It has a dedicated over-ice mode, while app connectivity permits adjustments such as volume and temperature and can assist with cleaning functions.
Rank #4
What it makes: Vertuo espresso and coffee formats, including compatible over-ice preparations.
Main drawbacks: It has no frother, depends on Vertuo capsules, and is comparatively loud: Tom’s Guide measured approximately 70.9 dB under its test conditions. Its opening mechanism rises above the body, so a low cabinet can make installation impractical. Some controls require the app, and app setup may request more personal information than some buyers expect. Dedicated iced capsules should be brewed using the intended over-ice mode rather than treated like ordinary hot capsules.
Who should buy it: Someone who prioritizes iced drinks, flexible reservoir placement, and a narrow footprint.
Who should skip it: Buyers who need quiet operation, dislike apps, or want wide third-party capsule availability. Read the hands-on Vertuo Up review.
5. Nespresso Vertuo Creatista: best premium milk machine
Best for: Vertuo owners who want more control over milk temperature and texture.
The Vertuo Creatista combines Vertuo’s larger drink formats with an automatic Breville-style steam wand. It supports single and double espresso and approximately 5-, 8-, 12-, and 18-ounce drinks, with a large water capacity of about 67 fluid ounces in the reviewed specification. Its stainless-steel construction and automatic steaming distinguish it from the Lattissima.
What it makes: Multiple Vertuo coffee sizes plus steamed milk with adjustable temperature and texture.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallMain drawbacks: The approximately $699.95 U.S. suggested price places it close to semi-automatic espresso equipment. It is large, the reviewed model has a non-removable reservoir, and milk can overheat if settings or technique are poorly controlled. Despite its advanced steam hardware, it remains dependent on Vertuo capsules.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Capsule cost and ownership
The machine price is only the beginning. At one capsule per day, an illustrative annual capsule cost is approximately $328.50 at $0.90 per capsule, $456.25 at $1.25, or $565.75 at $1.55. These are examples, not universal prices: they exclude milk, shipping, subscriptions, discounts, and drinks made with multiple capsules.

Vertuo can offer more convenient drink sizing, but capsule availability is a practical ownership issue: running out may mean ordering ahead rather than buying any compatible capsule locally. Compare capsule size, blend, pack quantity, and current price rather than relying on a general claim that one system is always cheaper.
Milk systems are not equivalent
- Aeroccino: Separate frothing and pouring. This is the CitiZ & Milk approach and is relatively simple.
- Integrated Lattissima system: One-touch milk recipes, with more cleaning obligations.
- Automatic steam wand: The Creatista offers more control over temperature and texture, but at a much higher price.
- Separate frother: An Essenza Mini plus an Aeroccino can cost less and remain flexible, but it is not one-touch.
None of these systems is self-cleaning. Emptying capsules, rinsing milk components, cleaning the drip tray and waste bin, and descaling remain part of ownership. The Vertuo Up can guide or initiate some cleaning functions through its app, but that is not the same as eliminating maintenance.
Which machine fits a small kitchen?
Measure more than width. Check depth, the direction of the water reservoir, the height needed to load a capsule, cup clearance, and space to remove the drip tray.
- Narrowest flexible placement: Vertuo Up, provided the counter has enough overhead clearance.
- Compact budget choice: Pop+, although its cup clearance and reservoir are limited.
- Small espresso setup: The Essenza Mini is a strong alternative for OriginalLine espresso.
- Milk-equipped footprint: CitiZ & Milk needs room for the Aeroccino area.
- Largest option here: Vertuo Creatista.
Are Nespresso machines worth it?
They are worth considering if speed, repeatability, and low-effort brewing matter more than grinding fresh beans and controlling every extraction variable. They are convenient for guests, offices, apartments, and households with different drink preferences.
The compromises are higher per-cup costs than many ground-coffee methods, capsule waste, limited extraction control, Vertuo’s proprietary supply, and ongoing milk-system maintenance. Nespresso machines make capsule coffee and espresso-style drinks; OriginalLine is closer to a conventional espresso workflow, while Vertuo specializes in automated larger formats. Neither should automatically be described as freshly ground café espresso or traditional drip coffee.
How these recommendations were assessed
This guide synthesizes current hands-on testing from established reviewers, manufacturer specifications, and capsule-system economics. It does not claim that this publication personally tested every machine. Independent reviews considered factors including drink quality and consistency, heat-up and brewing behavior, controls, noise, cup clearance, reservoir and waste-bin capacity, milk performance, cleaning, and real-world counter fit.
“Best overall” is therefore an editorial judgment about user fit, not a universal sensory ranking. Manufacturer specifications and independent measurements are identified separately where relevant; for example, the Vertuo Up’s approximately 70.9 dB noise figure comes from Tom’s Guide’s testing rather than Nespresso.
Useful alternatives
- Nespresso Essenza Mini: Consider it when the smallest possible OriginalLine espresso machine matters more than drink variety. The official product page lists the current model.
- VertuoPlus: A sensible option when discounted and when a large removable tank is more important than the newest features.
- Original Creatista Plus: Worth considering for OriginalLine buyers who want advanced milk steaming.
- Lattissima One: A smaller OriginalLine milk-machine alternative.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Buy the Vertuo Lattissima for the broadest household convenience, the CitiZ & Milk for espresso and capsule flexibility, the Vertuo Pop+ for value, the Vertuo Up for iced coffee and narrow placement, or the Vertuo Creatista for premium automated milk steaming. Whichever you choose, make the OriginalLine-versus-Vertuo decision first: that capsule commitment will matter longer than the machine’s color or sale price.
