Yes—Perth engineer Mark Pivac really did develop a robotic bricklaying machine. But the 2015 headline that called it the “world’s first robotic bricklayer” described an early commercialisation milestone, not a robot that could build a complete finished house without people.

Known as Hadrian, and now developed by ASX-listed FBR Ltd (formerly Fastbrick Robotics), the machine is a truck-mounted automated wall-construction system. It has progressed from prototype demonstrations to reported townhouse projects in Australia and a nine-home demonstration program in Florida. The important qualification is that Hadrian automates repetitive masonry work; it does not replace every trade or remove the need for human operators.

What the 2015 “robot brickie” headline actually meant

PerthNow reported on June 29, 2015 that Perth engineer Mark Pivac had developed Hadrian, a machine intended to automate brick and block wall construction.

The headline’s “world’s first” wording should be treated as an attributed claim—not as an independently established global historical fact. FBR now describes Hadrian as the “world’s first truly autonomous bricklaying robot,” while the original wording belonged to the news report and the company’s commercial narrative.

The 2015 story also used projections. It reported that Hadrian could potentially build a brick shell within two days, lay 1,000 bricks per hour and eventually have the capacity to erect 150 homes a year. Those were early reported claims and targets, not proof that the machine had already achieved 150 finished homes annually.

Nor did “build a house” mean completing a finished home. The relevant work was the structural brick or block shell. Foundations, roofing, windows, services, finishes and other construction stages still required conventional trades.

Why the robot was developed in Perth

Pivac told PerthNow that the project began with a bricklaying labour shortage in Perth in 2005. His background in aeronautical and mechanical engineering, computer-controlled machinery, instrumentation and complex systems provided the technical basis for tackling the problem.

The wider challenge was familiar across construction: bricklaying is physically demanding and repetitive, skilled workers can be difficult to find, and an ageing workforce creates pressure to increase output without relying solely on additional manual labour.

The stated purpose was not simply to eliminate bricklayers. Automation can address repetitive placement while shifting people toward machine operation, surveying, programming, maintenance, logistics, supervision and more complex construction work.

How Hadrian lays blocks

Hadrian is not a humanoid robot holding a trowel. It is a large mobile construction machine combining heavy equipment, robotics, sensors and software.

  1. Digital plan: A building design is converted into a three-dimensional masonry-laying program.
  2. Placement sequence: Software calculates where each brick or block must go and in what order.
  3. Material supply: Bricks or concrete masonry units are staged and delivered to the machine.
  4. Preparation: The system can de-hack, measure and cut units where the wall design requires it.
  5. Bonding material: Mortar or adhesive is delivered to the laying head. FBR’s current system lists Fastbrick Adhesive as its bonding agent.
  6. Robotic placement: A long boom moves each unit into its programmed position.
  7. Scanning and control: Sensors and scanning systems help check dimensions and placement as construction proceeds.
  8. Service integration: Depending on the configuration and wall system, the machine can route or cut channels for electrical and other services.

FBR says its evolved Hadrian system uses proprietary dynamic-stabilisation technology to compensate for movement, vibration and outdoor conditions. In practical terms, the machine must maintain placement accuracy while operating from a truck-mounted platform on an active building site.

What the original machine promised

The figures below belong to the 2015 report and should not be confused with the current product specification:

2015 reported figure What it represented
28-metre boom The reported reach of the early machine
1,000 bricks per hour A reported maximum or potential laying rate
Two days A projected time to build a house’s brick shell
150 homes per year Theoretical potential output
More than A$7 million Reported development spending at that stage

These numbers were associated with an early generation of Hadrian, and the unit of measurement matters. A brick is not necessarily the same size, weight or construction unit as a modern concrete block. A maximum placement rate is also not the same as whole-project productivity.

From prototype to real construction projects

Fastbrick Robotics was founded by Mark Pivac and his cousin Mike Pivac to commercialise the technology. The company later became FBR Ltd and is publicly traded on the Australian Securities Exchange.

The development path moved beyond laboratory demonstrations into outdoor testing and construction projects. FBR reported that Hadrian built the structural inner-skin walls of a Perth display home in 2020 after approximately three and a half days of robot work. Conventional trades then continued the rest of the build.

FBR also reported completion of a 16-townhouse project in Willagee in March 2024. According to the company’s project figures, the work involved 69,230 concrete masonry units across 5,951 square metres of wall area, with reported block wastage below 0.1 percent. These are company-reported results, rather than an independently audited comparison with conventional construction.

The technology subsequently reached the United States. FBR reported completing site-acceptance testing in Florida in August 2024. It then announced a nine-home demonstration program with CRH Ventures. FBR said the walls of one home were completed in a single shift and that the structures were independently verified as code-compliant. The distinction is important: the independent verification described by FBR relates to the Florida demonstration, while many other performance figures remain company-reported.

In March 2025, FBR announced a collaboration with Liebherr to investigate localised Hadrian assembly and commercialisation in the United States. That announcement described cooperation and investigation; it did not establish that a full-scale US manufacturing plant was already operating.

What the current Hadrian can do

FBR’s current Hadrian page lists the following specifications as of August 2026:

Specification FBR-listed figure
Reach 32 metres
Maximum block size 600 × 400 × 300 mm
Maximum block weight 45 kg
Maximum lay speed 360 blocks per hour
Operating crew Two people
Bonding agent Fastbrick Adhesive
Operating temperature 0–45°C
Weather tolerance Light rain; peak gusts up to 60 km/h
Listed base price A$7.8 million, subject to specifications, extras and tariffs

These are current figures published by FBR and may change. They should not be read as a direct update to the 2015 numbers. The change from a reported 28-metre boom and 1,000 bricks per hour to a 32-metre reach and 360 blocks per hour may reflect different machine generations, materials, operating assumptions or product positioning. The available evidence does not justify describing it simply as a performance decline.

FBR says Hadrian is intended for single-storey residential construction, townhouses, commercial projects and childcare centres, using compatible blocks and bonding systems.

Does Hadrian replace bricklayers?

No—not entirely. Hadrian automates a defined part of construction: repetitive wall-building operations on suitable projects. A two-person crew is still listed in FBR’s current specification—one Hadrian operator and one telehandler operator.

Human workers and other trades remain necessary for:

  • site preparation, foundations and slabs;
  • material delivery, staging and telehandler work;
  • machine operation, surveying and quality checks;
  • interpreting plans and dealing with site changes;
  • repairs, awkward details and non-standard work;
  • openings, flashings, connections and services;
  • roofing, finishes, interiors and subsequent trades; and
  • maintenance, engineering support and supervision.

The likely effect is a change in the construction skill mix rather than a simple removal of labour. Repetitive placement may require fewer people on a suitable wall section, while projects may need more operators, construction technologists, programmers, surveyors, maintenance specialists and supervisors.

Buying the robot versus buying robotic walls

The commercial question is not only whether Hadrian can place blocks quickly. It is whether a builder can keep a specialised machine productive enough to justify owning it.

Buying a Hadrian

FBR lists a base price of A$7.8 million, subject to final specifications, optional extras and tariffs, and says the robot is available for selected partners. That figure is not a complete installed or operating cost. A buyer would also need to consider finance, transport, site requirements, training, maintenance, software, spare parts, insurance, operators and utilisation across enough projects.

Ownership is most likely to suit a large builder, construction group, materials company or specialised operator with a reliable pipeline of compatible work. It is a poor fit for a one-off project or a small contractor that cannot keep the machine working.

Wall as a Service

FBR’s Wall as a Service model allows a builder to procure robotic wall construction without buying the robot:

  1. The builder supplies architectural plans and specifications.
  2. FBR processes the plans and provides a fixed-price service quotation.
  3. FBR arranges compatible blocks and required materials.
  4. Hadrian is sent to the site with its operating crew.
  5. The robot constructs the walls.
  6. The builder takes over for subsequent construction stages.

This approach avoids the capital cost and maintenance burden of ownership. However, FBR does not publish a standard public rate card in the supplied material, so there is no basis here for claiming that WaaS is always cheaper than conventional bricklaying. The appropriate comparison is the total delivered wall cost, including labour, equipment, materials, finance, logistics, downtime and follow-on schedule effects.

Where the system is a good fit—and where it is not

Hadrian is better suited to projects with repeatable wall layouts, clear access, compatible masonry units and detailed digital plans. Townhouse developments and other projects with multiple similar structures can provide the volume needed to make automation useful.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is less suitable when:

  • the truck cannot reach or stabilise in the required position;
  • the site has tight access, steep ground or inadequate material-staging space;
  • the design contains many irregular, complex or one-off details;
  • blocks arrive late, damaged or outside specification;
  • foundations or slabs are outside tolerance;
  • plans contain errors or do not match actual site conditions;
  • wind, rain or temperature exceed operating limits; or
  • the project lacks enough repeat work to justify the equipment or mobilisation.

Even a rapid wall build does not guarantee a rapid house. Foundations, inspections, material supply, weather, scaffolding, services and follow-on trades can still determine the overall schedule. A machine breakdown can also create a serious bottleneck if the project depends on one specialised system.

What builders should assess before adopting it

  1. Project geometry: Are the walls repetitive and accessible, or highly irregular?
  2. Materials: Are the proposed bricks or blocks compatible with the machine, adhesive and approved wall system?
  3. Site access: Is there enough clearance, ground stability and room for material staging?
  4. Digital readiness: Can the design be converted into a sufficiently detailed robotic placement program?
  5. People and logistics: Who will operate the robot, handle materials, survey the work and respond to changes?
  6. Weather: Can the project tolerate stoppages when conditions exceed the published limits?
  7. Compliance: What engineering certification, approvals and inspections are required in the relevant jurisdiction?
  8. Economics: What is the complete delivered cost per square metre of wall—not merely the advertised blocks-per-hour figure?
  9. Utilisation: Can an owned machine be kept productive across enough projects?
  10. Support: What happens during breakdowns, software issues, parts shortages or vendor delays?

The bottom line on Perth’s robotic bricklayer

Mark Pivac’s invention was real, and Hadrian has progressed well beyond the prototype stage described in 2015. FBR reports completed Australian housing projects, Florida site testing and a nine-home US demonstration program, including independent structural verification reported by the company.

But the accurate description is narrower than the original headline. Hadrian is a mobile, computer-controlled wall-construction system—not an unattended humanoid bricklayer and not a machine that finishes an entire home alone. “World’s first,” “autonomous” and “builds a house in two days” all require attribution and context.

As of August 2026, the technology’s real test is commercial: whether builders can provide the right sites, materials, digital plans and project volume, and whether they choose to buy a multimillion-dollar robot or procure walls through FBR’s service model.
