The best choice depends on what you mean by “combo.” An all-in-one washer-dryer uses one drum to wash and dry a load, saving space and eliminating the need to transfer wet clothes. A WashTower or stacked laundry centre is different: it contains separate washer and dryer drums, usually offering better throughput but requiring more vertical space and, often, external venting.
This historical Australian guide covers the nine products named in the original 2024 selection, while correcting that category confusion. The central trade-off is straightforward: an all-in-one is convenient and compact, but separate machines generally dry faster and let you wash one load while drying another.

These are the capacities and categories reported by the original PerthNow 2024 guide. Exact model numbers, prices, dimensions, warranties and Australian availability should be confirmed before purchase; the source extract does not identify every model precisely. Its headline and image also disagree about whether the list contains nine or ten products. The numbered recommendations contain nine.
What is a washer-dryer combo?
An all-in-one washer-dryer is one appliance with one drum. You load clothes once, select a wash-and-dry programme, and remove them when the cycle finishes. It is the type most people mean when they want a space-saving combo.
Popular on Amazon
- Exclusive Installation Bundle: Includes 3-Prong and 4-Prong Dryer Power Cords, Washer Hose Set, 8-ft Vent Duct, and 1-Year CPS Protection Plan
- Smart Wi-Fi Enabled: Control washer and dryer remotely via SmartThings app
- 4.7 cu ft capacity Washer with Active WaterJet & vibration reduction tech
- Built-in WaterJet faucet lets you pretreat stains inside the tub
- Self Clean keeps the tub fresh without harsh chemicals
A matching washer-and-dryer set contains two separate appliances. They may share a design, controls or connectivity, but each has its own drum. A WashTower or stacked laundry centre places separate appliances vertically. It saves floor area and allows simultaneous washing and drying, but it is not equivalent to a single-drum all-in-one.
Vented, condenser and heat-pump systems
- Vented dryers exhaust warm, damp air through an external duct. They can dry quickly but need suitable venting.
- Ventless condenser dryers collect moisture inside the appliance rather than exhausting it outdoors. They are more flexible for apartments, but still need a drain, clearance and maintenance.
- Heat-pump dryers reuse heat and can reduce energy consumption, though programmes may take longer. Ventless does not automatically mean heat pump.
Who should buy an all-in-one?
An all-in-one makes the most sense when floor space and convenience matter more than maximum speed. It can suit:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- apartments without an external dryer vent;
- small laundry rooms and compact homes;
- single people and couples who run occasional loads;
- homes where transferring wet laundry is difficult;
- secondary laundries, holiday homes and other low-throughput spaces; and
- buyers who want to leave a load running from wash through dry.
The main benefit is not necessarily a shorter total laundry day. It is reduced handling: you do not need to move wet clothing from the washer to the dryer.
Who should choose separate machines instead?
A separate washer and dryer is normally the better choice for a large family, frequent laundry, rapid turnaround, bulky bedding or several consecutive loads. One drum cannot wash a second load while it dries the first. Consumer Reports highlights this throughput limitation and reports that all-in-one machines generally dry more slowly than standard dryers; its combo overview explains the trade-off.
Separate appliances also provide a degree of resilience: if one fails, the other may remain usable. The disadvantages are a larger installation footprint, manual load transfer and—where applicable—the need for dryer ducting.
The nine products in the 2024 guide
1. Fisher & Paykel 8.5 kg / 5 kg combo — best overall in the source guide
This is an all-in-one candidate for buyers seeking a mainstream, space-saving appliance. Its 5 kg dry limit is the important figure: an 8.5 kg wash load cannot normally be dried effectively as one full load. It is better suited to everyday clothing than constant towels, blankets or family-sized laundry.

2. Beko 7.5 kg / 4 kg combo — best budget option in the source guide
The Beko is aimed at price-sensitive buyers with limited space. A 4 kg dry capacity is suitable for smaller wash loads, but households should budget for split wash-and-dry cycles when the wash drum is full. Entry price should not be the only comparison: verify warranty terms, local service availability, replacement filters and the cost of installation.
3. LG WashTower 17 kg / 10 kg — premium stacked alternative
This is a stacked system with separate washer and dryer sections, not a conventional all-in-one. Its major advantage is throughput: the washer and dryer can operate at the same time, and the larger dedicated dryer is more appropriate for family laundry than many single-drum combos.

Choose it only if the room has sufficient height, structural support, door clearance and the correct electrical and ventilation arrangements. It is the wrong category for someone specifically seeking one ventless drum.
4. Samsung 8.5 kg / 6 kg Smart combo — smart-feature option
This all-in-one is the source guide’s smart pick. App connectivity can provide notifications, cycle selection or monitoring, but the precise functions depend on the model, software and region. Confirm whether an account, home Wi-Fi and a supported phone platform are required, and whether remote controls are available in Australia.
The 6 kg dry limit is more useful than a 4 kg limit, but it remains below the headline wash capacity. Independent testing shows that drying speed varies substantially between combo designs; Good Housekeeping reported Samsung as the fastest of the models it tested, but those results apply to its specified test conditions, not every regional Samsung model.
5. Bosch Series 6 10 kg / 5 kg — water-efficiency-focused option
The Bosch recommendation is framed around water efficiency. That claim should be checked against the official Australian energy and water labels for the exact model rather than inferred from the Series 6 branding. Its 5 kg dry capacity makes it more suitable for moderate loads than for high-volume family laundry.
European-style all-in-one machines can suit compact laundries, but measure depth carefully. Hoses, doors and required rear clearance can make an appliance deeper than the cabinet dimensions suggest.

Like the other LG WashTower entry, this is a stacked pair rather than one combined drum. It can be the more practical solution for households that prioritise energy performance but still need to process multiple loads efficiently. Confirm the official energy label, venting requirements, voltage, installation method and local model number before comparing it with all-in-one units.
7. Westinghouse EasyCare 9 kg / 5 kg combo — small-household option
A 9 kg wash capacity and 5 kg dry capacity can work well for a couple or small household, provided the buyer plans around the dry limit. It is less suitable for repeated bedding and towel loads. Ask the retailer how lint is collected and serviced, and whether authorised repairs and parts are readily available in your area.
8. Electrolux UltimateCare 700 10 kg / 6 kg combo — medium-household option
The 10 kg wash rating gives this all-in-one room for a medium household’s everyday laundry, while the 6 kg drying limit still requires sensible loading. Separate heavier items from lightweight clothing where possible; mixed fabrics can finish with some items damp while others are dry.
Do not confuse this recommendation with Electrolux’s separately announced 2024 laundry pair. Electrolux’s announcement listed a launch price of $1,449 for each appliance in its relevant market context, but that is a historical launch price for a pair and not a current Australian price for this combo.

9. Miele PWash & Tdos 8 kg / 4 kg — premium apartment option
The Miele is positioned for buyers who want a premium compact appliance. Its 4 kg dry limit is the smallest among the listed all-in-one examples, so it suits smaller, regular loads rather than high-volume laundry. Apartment buyers should focus on footprint, noise claims supported by documentation, moisture management, door clearance, service access and ownership cost—not just brand or feature count.

1. Compare dry capacity separately
Never compare only the headline wash number. Look for a format such as 8.5 kg wash / 5 kg dry. The dry limit determines how much can move directly from washing to drying. If the wash-to-dry ratio is low, expect to remove part of the load before drying.
2. Establish the real cycle time
There is no universal combo cycle time. It changes with load size, fabric, spin extraction, selected temperature, drying technology, ambient conditions and venting. In Good Housekeeping’s tests, GE completed medium loads in about two hours under its test conditions, while LG took roughly 30 minutes longer for its standard test load; Samsung was faster than both. Treat these as comparative laboratory results, not household guarantees. Check the model’s estimated time display and allow longer for towels and bedding.
3. Measure the whole installation
- Width, height and depth, including hoses and required clearance.
- Depth with the door fully open.
- Clearance above a stacked unit.
- Access through doors, hallways, stairs and lifts.
- Water inlet, drain position and drain height.
- Outlet type, voltage and electrical load.
- External vent requirements, if any.
- Floor strength, levelling and vibration clearance.
- Door-hinge direction and whether reversal is supported.
A machine can fit the laundry alcove and still fail to pass through the home or allow the door to open fully.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors4. Inspect the maintenance design
Ask how the machine removes lint and where the user-accessible filter is located. Also check gasket cleaning, detergent-dispenser care, tub-clean programmes, condenser or heat-exchanger cleaning, drain-pump access and the availability of replacement parts. Ventless placement removes the exhaust duct; it does not make the appliance maintenance-free.
5. Compare evidence, not labels
“Smart”, “energy efficient”, “water efficient” and “quiet” are not complete specifications. Look for the model’s official energy and water labels, measured noise data, supported app functions and independent testing. Consumer Reports evaluates washing, drying, efficiency, noise, vibration, convenience, capacity and features across a range of all-in-one models; its combo testing overview is useful context.
Common problems and how to recover
Damp clothes after the dry cycle
- Remove part of the load and avoid exceeding the dry-capacity rating.
- Run an additional dry cycle using the correct fabric setting.
- Clean accessible filters, the door gasket and detergent residue.
- Check that the drain is not blocked and that the appliance is spinning properly.
- If the problem continues, use the manufacturer’s service documentation or authorised service network.
Bulky towels and bedding
These hold more moisture and can form a dense bundle that tumbles poorly. A combo may wash them successfully but take much longer to dry, require rearrangement or need a second cycle. If bulky items are routine, a dedicated dryer is usually the safer choice.
Pet hair
Hair can collect in the gasket, filter and drainage areas. A model-specific pet-hair programme may help—Good Housekeeping reported a downloadable option for one GE Profile model—but it does not replace cleaning. Verify that any feature exists on the exact model sold in Australia.
Odour or mould
After use, wipe the gasket, remove trapped debris, leave the door ajar where safe, follow detergent instructions and run the tub-clean programme at the recommended interval. A damp, closed front-loader is more likely to develop odours.
Which setup fits your household?
| Your situation | Most sensible direction |
|---|---|
| Single person or couple, little floor space | All-in-one, if longer drying is acceptable |
| Apartment without an external vent | Ventless all-in-one or ventless heat-pump option, subject to drain and clearance requirements |
| Small family with several loads a day | Separate or stacked washer and dryer |
| Large family or frequent towels | Separate machines with a dedicated dryer |
| Existing vent and enough floor space | Matching washer and vented dryer for faster throughput |
| Fastest laundry turnaround | Separate machines that can run concurrently |
| Lowest purchase price | Compare the Beko-type all-in-one against clearance or refurbished separate appliances, including warranty and installation |
| Premium compact installation | Miele-type all-in-one, after checking service and ownership costs |
Alternatives to an all-in-one
- Matching front-load washer and vented dryer: usually the strongest option for speed, capacity and overlapping loads.
- Stacked separate pair: saves floor area while preserving two drums, but needs suitable height and installation.
- Separate heat-pump dryer: useful where external venting is unavailable and energy consumption matters.
- Compact washer plus shared-building or laundromat dryer: sensible when home drying demand is occasional.
- Clearance or refurbished appliances: potentially cheaper, but check age, remaining warranty, service history and parts availability.
Final checklist before checkout
- Exact model number and Australian availability.
- Wash capacity and dry capacity as separate figures.
- Vented, condenser or heat-pump drying technology.
- Estimated complete-cycle time.
- Width, depth, height and door-open clearance.
- Water, drain and electrical requirements.
- Delivery route through doors, stairs and lifts.
- Installation, levelling, removal and haul-away costs.
- Warranty length, exclusions and authorised service coverage.
- Replacement filters, parts and consumables.
- Retail or sale price, currency and date observed.
- Return policy if the appliance cannot be installed.
For additional comparison context, LG publishes specifications for separate washer-and-dryer sets such as the WM4000HWA/DLEX4000W pair. That US example has a 4.5-cubic-foot washer and 7.4-cubic-foot electric dryer, but it must not be treated as an Australian recommendation without confirming voltage, model availability and warranty.
