The Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra solves the most frustrating robot-vacuum problems better than most models—but it is not maintenance-free. Its strongest combination is reliable LiDAR mapping, strong pet-hair pickup, carpet-aware mop lifting, edge-cleaning hardware, and a dock that empties dust, refills water, washes mops with hot water, dries them, and dispenses detergent. The trade-off is cost, dock upkeep, imperfect cable and small-object avoidance, and mopping that still cannot replace manual treatment of dried or deeply embedded messes.
Verdict in brief
The S8 MaxV Ultra is a strong choice for homes with mixed flooring, pets, children, frequent everyday spills, and owners who want scheduled floor maintenance with as little intervention as possible. Roborock rates it at up to 10,000 Pa suction, VibraRise 3.0 scrubbing at up to 4,000 vibrations per minute, and mop lifting up to 20 mm. Those are manufacturer specifications, not guarantees of superior real-world cleaning on every floor.

Its value lies less in any single number than in the complete system: vacuuming, mopping, automatic dust emptying, water management, mop washing, heated drying, detergent dispensing, mapping, and room-level controls. It is a poor fit if you expect perfect inside corners, zero manual maintenance, reliable handling of every cable or toy, maximum anti-tangle performance, or the lowest ownership cost.

What problems is it designed to solve?
| Household problem | How the S8 MaxV Ultra responds | What remains |
|---|---|---|
| Dustbin fills quickly | Automatic dust emptying at the dock | The dust bag still needs replacement, particularly in pet-heavy homes. |
| Mop pads become dirty or smelly | Hot-water washing, detergent dispensing, and heated drying | The dirty-water route, sink, filters, and mop cloths still require inspection. |
| Floors need repeated mopping | VibraRise 3.0 vibrating mops and adaptive dirt response | Old, sticky, greasy, or embedded messes may need manual cleaning. |
| Dirt collects along walls | FlexiArm side brush and an extra edge-mopping system | A round robot can still miss tight inside corners, and the improvement is not transformative in every layout. |
| Carpets risk getting wet | Automatic mop and brush lifting plus carpet rules | Thick rugs, tassels, unstable mats, and poor settings can still cause problems. |
| Pet hair builds up | DuoRoller Riser brush and claimed high suction | Hair pickup and hair tangling are different issues; the rollers still need inspection. |
| Clutter causes collisions | LiDAR, RGB camera, and 3D structured light | Thin cables, small toys, transparent items, and pet accidents can still defeat avoidance. |
| Cleaning cannot happen while you are away | Mapping, scheduling, room controls, and automatic docking | The floor must be prepared and the dock must have water, space, drainage where applicable, and Wi-Fi. |
What the dock really automates
The 8-in-1 RockDock Ultra is the main reason to consider this model. It can automatically empty the robot’s dustbin, replenish its onboard water, wash the mop pads, dry wet components with heated air, dispense detergent, self-clean its dock area, and recharge the robot.
Roborock specifies a 580 ml detergent tank and says one fill can last more than three months under its own test conditions. Treat that as a usage-dependent estimate rather than a guaranteed interval. Cleaning frequency, floor area, water flow, dirt, and household size all affect consumption. Use only a cleaning solution confirmed for the model; unsuitable detergent can cause excess foam or drainage problems.
The dock reduces intervention frequency—it does not eliminate ownership tasks. You still need to:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Fill the clean-water tank, or install a supported plumbing configuration where available.
- Empty the dirty-water tank and monitor standing residue or odor.
- Replace dust bags.
- Refill detergent.
- Clean the dock sink, filter, brush, and drainage path.
- Wash or replace mop cloths.
- Remove hair and debris from the main and side brushes.
- Clean sensors and the camera lens.
- Clear clogs and investigate failed emptying, washing, or docking.
Different regions and hardware editions may use different tank or refill-and-drain arrangements. Check the regional support hub and manual before buying or planning plumbing work.
Problem one: dust, grit, and pet hair
The S8 MaxV Ultra combines a DuoRoller Riser main brush with manufacturer-rated suction of up to 10,000 Pa. Independent testing from RTINGS describes its pet-hair pickup as good, including on low-pile carpet, while TechHive reported strong hard-floor pickup of dust, dirt, and cat hair.

Our system ensures that your robot vacuum always operates at peak performance, providing a seamless and hygienic cleaning process for ultimate peace of mind.
- 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: Reserve a space of at least 30.5cm (1.0ft) in height, 42cm (1.4ft)in width, and 100cm (3.3ft) in depth. The dock should be placed against a wall on a hard and even floor (wood, tile, concrete, etc.). Avoid placing it on soft surfaces (carpet, mat, etc.) and in narrow areas. Ensure that the location has a strong WiFi signal for an optimal experience with the mobile app. The height difference at any point on the drainage pipeline from the ground is recommended not to exceed 50cm(1.6ft). The installation distance for the water refill and outlet pipes is recommended within 6 meters(19.7ft).
- 𝗨𝗽𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗹𝗹-𝗶𝗻-𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗗𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗨𝗹𝘁𝗿𝗮: The RockDock Ultra revolutionizes cleaning with automatic hot water mop washing (up to 140°F) that effortlessly dissolves stubborn stains from the mop. Its intelligent dirt detection ensures optimal mop-washing time and returns to heavily soiled areas for thorough cleanliness. Enjoy a fresh environment with automatic hot air drying, which prevents unpleasant odors. The automatic detergent dispenser provides over 3 months of cleaning support with a single fill, while automatic dust collection, water replenishment, and a self-cleaning base ensure hassle-free maintenance, saving you precious time.
- 𝗨𝗻𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲: With unparalleled 8000Pa suction, unleash the formidable cleaning power of the S8 Max Ultra to achieve spotless perfection in your home. The upgraded mop features dual vibration modules that can easily manage dust, dirt, and dry stains through high-speed scrubbing at 4000 times per minute.
- 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗡𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝗯𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲: Experience intelligent cleaning with the S8 Max Ultra's Reactive 3D Obstacle Avoidance and PreciSense LiDAR technology. Detecting and skillfully bypassing objects with its 3D structured light technology, the robot vacuum creates detailed maps for precise navigation thanks to its PreciSense LiDAR navigation system.
That makes it a credible daily cleaner for tracked-in grit, crumbs, cat litter, short hair, and loose fur. It is less useful to think of 10,000 Pa as a performance score. Advertised suction figures are not directly comparable between brands and do not account for brush design, airflow, floor texture, hair type, or the number of passes.
Long human hair and long pet fur can still wrap around the rollers and side brush. A self-emptying dock does not remove hair from the brush assembly. Homes with heavy shedding should inspect the rollers regularly and keep the supplied maintenance tools accessible.

Pet ownership creates several separate problems:
- Hair: Pickup can be strong, but tangled hair still requires manual removal.
- Litter and grit: Daily vacuuming helps prevent accumulation, though heavier particles may scatter around bowls or mats.
- Toys: Larger objects may be recognized, but small toys can be dragged, pushed, or swallowed by the brush.
- Food and water bowls: Create no-go zones if the robot repeatedly bumps bowls or spreads spilled water.
- Pet waste: Never treat camera-assisted recognition as fail-safe. Inspect the floor before unattended cleaning if an accident is possible.
- Pet Mode: TechRadar found that the more cautious behavior can reduce disturbance around pets, but may also produce less comprehensive coverage.
Problem two: dirty or smelly mop pads
The S8 MaxV Ultra’s mop system uses VibraRise 3.0, with two vibration modules and a Roborock rating of up to 4,000 vibrations per minute. Its dock can wash the mops with water heated to approximately 60°C/140°F and then dry them. Roborock says hot-water washing can help dissolve greasy dirt and disinfect the mop, but that marketing claim should not be read as proof of medical-grade or universal household sanitation; actual results vary with temperature, contact time, contamination, and dock condition.
In practical terms, automatic re-washing and heated drying are more important than the headline temperature. A mop that is rinsed between rooms and dried after a run is less likely to spread one room’s dirt through the next or remain wet and stale inside the dock. The system is particularly useful for footprints, light dust films, kitchen residue, and routine maintenance mopping.
It is not a substitute for treating dried food, thick grease, sticky drink spills, or old stains. Increase scrub intensity, water flow, and mop-washing intensity—“Deep,” where that option exists in the current app version—when appropriate. If the robot begins smearing rather than cleaning, inspect the cloths, washing sink, dirty-water path, and water supply instead of simply increasing the schedule.
Problem three: edges and corners
Roborock addresses wall-edge dirt with two different mechanisms:

The Zero-Tangling DuoDivide Main Brush and FlexiArm Riser Side Brush ensure no hair tangles, even with long hair or pet fur. Additionally, the anti-tangle omnidirectional wheels eliminate the need for manual hair removal, significantly boosting cleaning efficiency and making maintenance effortless.
- 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: The FlexiArm Riser Side Brush & Mop automatically extends to reach difficult corners and low spaces under furniture, sweeping away dust with ease. As it detects corners and edges, the mop extends to provide thorough, efficient cleaning. This design ensures comprehensive coverage, effectively eliminating blind spots and leaving every area spotless.
- 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆-𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗟𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀: The innovative AdaptiLift Chassis, featuring left/right wheels and omnidirectional wheels, effortlessly navigates obstacles up to 4 cm high, including thresholds and U-shaped furniture legs. When carpets are detected, the Dual Spinning Mops and mop bracket automatically lift to prevent wetting long-pile carpets. During recharging, the main and side brushes are raised to avoid dirt transfer onto the floor, delivering a quiet and pristine mopping experience.
- FlexiArm side brush: The side brush extends toward corners and low areas to sweep debris into the robot’s cleaning path.
- Extra Edge Mopping System: A side mop is intended to reach closer to walls than the central vibrating mop.
These are meaningful engineering responses to the round shape of a robot vacuum, but neither turns it into a hand tool. Tight 90-degree inside corners remain difficult because the robot body cannot occupy the same geometry as a narrow corner. Furniture legs, uneven baseboards, recessed skirting, and narrow gaps can also prevent the arm or mop from reaching as intended.
RTINGS’ comparison with the Roborock Qrevo Curv found that the additional side mop’s overall effect on wall grime was comparatively limited. The realistic expectation is better edge coverage on suitable straight runs—not perfect corners or a guarantee that a manual edge clean will never be needed.
Problem four: carpets, rugs, and damp transfer
The mop can lift up to 20 mm, according to Roborock, while the brush and mop modules are designed to lift for carpet transitions. The app also provides selectable carpet behavior, including options to clean, skip, or ignore carpets. The important distinction is that “detect carpet,” “lift the mop over carpet,” and “avoid carpet while mopping” are not the same behavior.
For a mixed-floor home, configure carpet rules before starting scheduled mopping. Test the robot on each rug, especially if you have:
- High-pile or shag carpet.
- Thick rubber-backed mats.
- Tassels, fringe, or loose threads.
- Lightweight rugs that move when contacted.
- Dark or reflective surfaces that may challenge sensors.
Thick rugs may exceed the practical clearance available even if the published lift is 20 mm. Tassels can tangle in the brush, and a robot returning from a wet hard floor can still create a damp-transfer risk if a particular rug is too thick, its edge folds, or the configured carpet behavior is unsuitable. Use no-go or no-mop zones when a rug repeatedly causes trouble rather than relying on automatic detection alone.

Combined with 212°F hot water washing, 131°F hot air drying, self-cleaning maintenance, and up to 65 days of auto dust emptying, it delivers a truly hands-free experience.
Problem five: cables, clutter, and pets
The S8 MaxV Ultra combines PreciSense LiDAR with an RGB camera and 3D structured light. Roborock markets Reactive AI 2.0 obstacle recognition and pet-related camera features. This is more capable than basic bump-and-turn navigation, and RTINGS’ July 2026 update rated its hazard avoidance more effective than that of the Qrevo Curv and comparable favorably with models such as the Dreame L40 Ultra.
It is still not fail-safe. TechRadar reported cable tangles, and thin charging leads, small toys, transparent objects, reflective items, socks, and low-profile clutter can remain difficult. A failure may leave the robot stuck, drag an object across the floor, miss an area, or spread a mess.
Before unattended cleaning, remove cables, loose clothing, small toys, and anything that could be caught in the rollers. Use physical barriers or no-go zones around fragile objects, bowls, play areas, and locations where pet accidents are possible. AI recognition should reduce supervision, not replace a quick floor scan.
Camera and privacy
The camera supports video calls, two-way voice, remote viewing, pet search, and pet snapshots. That can be useful for checking on an animal or investigating a room, but it changes the privacy calculation compared with a LiDAR-only cleaner. Review app permissions, account access, and the controls for disabling camera-related functions before placing the robot in bedrooms, offices, or other private areas. This article does not make claims about cloud storage, retention, encryption, or third-party access; those details require the current regional privacy documentation.

Do not assume that a universal calendar applies to every component. Use the manual for the exact regional tank or plumbing version. Roborock’s troubleshooting documentation identifies common causes such as dirty sensors, blocked filters, tangled brushes, disabled auto-emptying, an incorrectly installed dust-container cover, and docking without a completed cleaning cycle.
Setup checklist
- Choose the correct regional edition. Tank, drainage, electrical, warranty, and included-accessory details can vary.
- Place the dock level. Leave the clearance specified for your edition and keep the water and drainage area accessible.
- Confirm network compatibility. The US product page specifies 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, not 5 GHz. Do not generalize that specification to every regional edition without checking.
- Fill the clean-water and detergent reservoirs. Use an approved solution rather than generic detergent.
- Run initial mapping. Label rooms and identify carpets before relying on schedules.
- Set carpet rules and no-go/no-mop zones. Pay special attention to thick rugs, bowls, cables, and fragile areas.
- Test a small area. Confirm mop wetness, edge behavior, carpet transitions, and return-to-dock washing.
- Prepare the floor. Remove cables, loose clothing, small toys, and pet-waste hazards.
- Verify the dock cycle. Make sure the robot returns, empties, washes, dries, and receives water correctly before leaving it unattended.
Exact app labels and feature locations can change with firmware and region, so use the current version of the Roborock app and the appropriate support documentation.

S8 MaxV Ultra versus alternatives
| Consider this model when you prioritize… | Relevant choice | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Obstacle avoidance and mature mapping | S8 MaxV Ultra | Still requires floor preparation; cables can cause tangles. |
| Rotating-mop behavior or newer hair-management design | Roborock Qrevo Curv | RTINGS gives the S8 MaxV Ultra the stronger obstacle-avoidance case and found the Curv’s edge comparison relevant. |
| A premium alternative with strong vacuuming | Dreame L40 Ultra | Compare sale price, dock size, app behavior, mopping design, and obstacle handling. |
| Dual rotating mops and a higher advertised suction figure | Dreame X40 Ultra | Its cited 12,000 Pa versus 10,000 Pa does not by itself prove better pickup or mopping. |
| Newer low-clearance, anti-tangle, or mopping hardware | Newer premium models | They may offer newer designs, but price, app quality, and real-world avoidance still matter. |
RTINGS’ L40 Ultra comparison, Digital Trends’ X40 Ultra comparison, and the Qrevo Curv comparison are useful starting points, but household priorities should decide the purchase.
Price, availability, and ownership cost
On the US Roborock store page consulted for this coverage, the S8 MaxV Ultra was displayed at $799.99 against a $1,799.99 list-price reference, while also being marked “out of stock, coming soon.” That is a volatile retailer-page snapshot, not a promise of current price or availability. Check the live page for your country, the exact variant, warranty coverage, and seller stock before treating the discount as a buying reason.
Budget for more than the robot: dust bags, mop cloths, filters, brushes, detergent, water handling, and dock cleaning all contribute to total ownership cost. Optional plumbing can reduce tank handling where supported, but do not assume installation, parts, regional service, or warranty coverage are included with a particular purchase.
Quick Recap
Who should buy it?
- Pet owners: A good fit when hair pickup, scheduled cleaning, and cautious obstacle recognition matter more than completely eliminating brush maintenance.
- Mixed-floor homes: One of its strongest use cases, provided carpet behavior is configured and tested.
- Mostly hard-floor homes: Attractive if you value regular mopping and automatic pad washing.
- Homes with children and everyday spills: Useful for frequent maintenance cleaning, but dried or sticky messes still need attention.
- Large homes: The dock’s water and dust automation can reduce interruptions, assuming there is suitable dock space and reliable connectivity.
- Small apartments: Consider the dock footprint and whether its automation justifies the space.
- Many rugs or low furniture: Look closely at rug thickness, tassels, mop clearance, and the robot’s ability to reach under furniture.
- Privacy-sensitive buyers: Consider a non-camera alternative if remote viewing and pet monitoring are not worth the added privacy concern.
- Lowest-cost buyers: A simpler vacuum or a discounted alternative may provide better value once consumables and maintenance are included.
