The City of Canning says its $3 million refurbishment of Riverton Leisureplex is complete, with improvements ranging from refreshed pool and change-room areas to major upgrades to pumps, liners and hot-water infrastructure. The City announced completion on 26 November 2025; PerthNow reported the unveiling on 6 December.
What changed at Riverton Leisureplex?
The project covered the Wellness Centre and program pool, pool-deck change rooms, accessibility facilities, the first-aid room and ventilation or climate control in public areas. The City of Canning’s completion announcement lists visitor-facing improvements alongside less visible building services work.

- A new liner for the program pool.
- Retiling in the spa and regrouting in the steam room.
- A rejuvenated sauna.
- Improved ventilation and temperature control in public areas.
Change rooms, access and safety

Community details
The City also highlighted a mural celebrating emerging local swimmers. Its aquatics page describes Riverton as having an eight-lane, 50-metre lap pool, a leisure pool with walking lanes, a beach-style pool with a rapid river and baby-pool area, and a Wellness Suite with a small program pool, spa, sauna and steam room. The City says the Wellness Suite is for people aged 16 and older. City of Canning: Swimming and aquatics
Why the upgrades matter to different users
The City said the work is intended to support physiotherapy groups, its swim school, families, wellness patrons and general members. Mayor Patrick Hall also pointed to seniors attending wellness programs, community organisations and regular gym users. In a facility used for swimming lessons, exercise, therapy and family visits, improvements to access, changing spaces, comfort and safety address different needs rather than only changing the building’s appearance.

More than $1 million went to work visitors may not see
Of the $3 million project, the City said more than $1 million was directed to behind-the-scenes upgrades, including pumps, liners and a custom hot-water system. These systems are less prominent than renewed pool and change-room finishes, but they underpin the facility’s operation and the comfort of its users.

The City said the new high-capacity hot-water system delivers more than four times the previous output. Separately, its project update gives storage capacity as 5,000 litres compared with the former 1,000 litres. Storage volume and output are different measures, so the figures should not be read as interchangeable. City of Canning: Leisureplex Refurbishments
