For most front doors, the Ring Battery Doorbell Plus (2nd Gen) is the better value. It delivers 2K video, head-to-toe coverage, color night vision, customizable motion zones, dual-band Wi-Fi 6, and a removable battery for less money.
The Ring Battery Doorbell Pro (2nd Gen) is worth the extra cost when you need more detail at a distance, radar-based motion mapping, pre-event footage, enhanced zoom, or higher-end audio and low-light features. At the U.S. list prices observed for these current models, the Pro costs $249.99 and the Plus costs $179.99—a $70 difference. Promotions can make the gap much larger, so check the current Ring catalog before buying.

This comparison covers the current second-generation battery models: the Ring Battery Doorbell Pro (2nd Gen) and Ring Battery Doorbell Plus (2nd Gen). They are not the same products as older models called Video Doorbell Pro, Video Doorbell Pro 2, or the original Battery Doorbell Plus. Ring’s naming has changed across generations; its current comparison page is the safest reference for model names and specifications.

What the Pro adds for the extra money
4K video and 10x zoom
The Pro has Retinal 4K video and up to 10x enhanced zoom, compared with the Plus’s Retinal 2K video and 6x zoom. That makes the Pro more useful when the camera is watching a long walkway, driveway, gate, or broad approach where people remain relatively far from the door.
On a short porch, however, a visitor standing close to the camera may already look sufficiently clear in 2K. Higher nominal resolution does not guarantee footage that is four times more useful. Lighting, distance, motion blur, compression, camera angle, internet bandwidth, and the display used to view the footage all affect the result.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Ring recommends at least 15 Mbps upload speed for its 4K devices and at least 10 Mbps for its 2K devices. Ring also notes that video resolution can vary with bandwidth. The Pro’s advantage is therefore most convincing when you have a strong Wi-Fi signal and regularly need to enlarge distant footage—not simply because its specification says “4K.” See the Pro product page for current requirements.
Radar-based 3D Motion Detection
The Pro’s 3D Motion Detection uses radar to estimate where movement occurs. It is best understood as a motion-location and filtering system, not just a claim that every alert will be better.
It can be useful when:
- People cross a driveway or sidewalk before reaching the door.
- The camera covers a large area beyond the porch.
- You want to distinguish activity inside and outside a defined boundary.
- Ordinary motion zones generate too many notifications.
Ring says the radar-based system is designed to improve person, package, and vehicle detection and reduce false alerts. That is Ring’s product claim, not a guarantee established by a standardized independent test. A small porch with little background activity may not benefit enough to justify the premium.
Bird’s Eye View and Bird’s Eye Zones
These Pro-only features help visualize the estimated path of a detected person or vehicle. They can make driveway or side-approach activity easier to interpret and can help you define where movement should count as relevant.
They do not turn the doorbell into a panoramic security camera. Walls, landscaping, recesses, mounting height, and the camera’s physical position can still create blind spots. They are most useful on properties with a broad approach, not necessarily at a door immediately beside a public sidewalk.

Color Pre-Roll
Color Pre-Roll is intended to capture activity before the event that triggered recording. That can help avoid clips that begin after someone is already at the door.
It is not continuous recording, and its operation may depend on Ring’s current app settings, network conditions, battery behavior, storage handling, and compatible Ring Protect features. Do not interpret “pre-roll” as a promise that every event will include a fixed number of seconds before motion.
Audio+
The Pro lists two-way talk with Audio+, while the Plus lists two-way talk. This gives the Pro the higher-end audio specification, but it should not be treated as a guarantee of dramatically clearer conversations. Performance depends on wind, traffic, speaker and microphone placement, network latency, and the phone used for the conversation.

The Pro includes a Quick Release Ultra Battery Pack, while the Plus uses a Quick Release Battery Pack. Ring says the Pro is compatible with Quick Release Battery Packs from previous Ring doorbells, but check the exact battery model and physical compatibility before relying on an older spare.
What the Plus already does well
The Plus covers the requirements of many homes without the Pro’s premium features:
- Retinal 2K video for ordinary visitor and package coverage.
- Head-to-toe framing for seeing people and packages near the threshold.
- Color night vision under suitable ambient lighting.
- Customizable motion zones.
- Removable battery operation.
- Dual-band 2.4GHz/5GHz Wi-Fi 6.
- Two-way talk, app alerts, Alexa integration, and compatibility with Ring Protect features.
It also has the same listed 140° horizontal × 140° vertical field of view as the Pro. The Pro does not provide a wider nominal view, so it is not automatically the answer for a badly angled or recessed doorway. A better mounting position, corner kit, or improved lighting may make more difference than the upgrade.
Is the Pro’s 4K video visibly better at a front door?
Sometimes—but the property matters more than the label.

- Get real-time alerts — Receive real-time notifications on your phone when motion is detected.
- Easily recharge — Simply insert the included removal tool to detach your doorbell from the wall, then recharge the built-in battery via USB-C. (Cable not included.)
- Short porch: The Plus may provide all the detail most visitors require.
- Long driveway or walkway: The Pro’s higher resolution and 10x zoom are more useful.
- Face identification: Extra resolution can help, but lighting, viewing angle, distance, and movement remain critical.
- Package identification: The Pro may preserve more detail when enlarging a label or small object, but it cannot reliably make unreadable text readable.
- Frequent Live View: The Pro can demand more bandwidth, and heavy high-resolution use may affect battery consumption. Ring does not provide a universal battery-life figure that applies to every installation.
Neither model should be chosen as a substitute for a properly positioned, well-lit entryway. A porch light can improve useful nighttime footage on either doorbell.
Night vision: a modest, situation-dependent Pro advantage
The Plus offers color night vision. Ring positions the Pro as having higher-end true-color night viewing and says it can switch to crisp black-and-white video in near darkness.
Color night vision generally needs available ambient light. Neither doorbell should be expected to produce full-color footage in a completely dark scene. The Plus should be adequate under an ordinary porch light, while the Pro may preserve more low-light detail or color in favorable conditions. If the entrance is genuinely dark, adding suitable lighting may be more effective than paying for the Pro.
Subscription costs change the calculation
The one-time camera difference is only part of the ownership cost. Ring says a compatible Ring Protect plan enables recording and photo capture and provides access to additional video, intelligence, and security features.
Recommended Free Tools
Without a plan, do not assume you can review every missed event, save and share clips, or use every advanced alert and intelligence feature. Exact plan names, prices, device limits, and feature availability can change, so check Ring’s current U.S. plan page before purchase. Package detection and Color Pre-Roll should likewise be checked against the current plan and device requirements rather than assumed to be included automatically.
The practical result is simple: if you intend to keep a subscription for several years, its recurring cost can outweigh the Pro’s $70 hardware premium. If you only need occasional live viewing and alerts, the Pro’s advanced recording-related features may be less valuable—but confirm the capabilities available without a plan before buying.

Both doorbells can be installed without existing doorbell wiring, and both use removable batteries. Actual runtime varies with motion volume, Live View use, Wi-Fi quality, temperature, recording settings, and other conditions. Frequent activity, poor signal strength, cold weather, and repeated Live View sessions can all increase charging frequency.

The Pro supports optional hardwiring to a standard doorbell system rated at 8–24 VAC, 40VA maximum, 50/60Hz. Ring lists an estimated installation time of about 10 minutes for the Pro. The Plus can also be battery-powered or optionally hardwired; consult the exact installation requirements for your existing system.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a busy entrance, buying a compatible spare battery may be more useful than relying on a single pack. A wired model deserves consideration if you already have compatible wiring and want to avoid removing and charging batteries altogether.
Which model fits your situation?
Choose the Battery Doorbell Plus (2nd Gen) if:
- Your camera covers a compact porch.
- Visitors stand close to the door.
- You want 2K video, head-to-toe coverage, color night vision, and ordinary motion zones.
- You do not regularly zoom into distant footage.
- You are price-sensitive or the Plus is heavily discounted.
- You already own compatible Ring Quick Release batteries.
Choose the Battery Doorbell Pro (2nd Gen) if:
- Your approach includes a driveway, gate, path, or broad yard.
- You often need to enlarge distant faces, packages, or other details.
- Bird’s Eye View and radar-based motion mapping would help explain activity.
- Conventional motion zones are difficult to tune.
- Pre-event footage is important to you.
- You value the Pro’s Audio+ and higher-end low-light positioning.
- You have strong Wi-Fi and sufficient upload bandwidth near the door.
- The price difference is modest enough to accept over several years.
Consider neither—or consider a wired model—if:
- You have reliable wiring and want to eliminate battery maintenance.
- Your Wi-Fi is weak and cannot be improved.
- You require cloud recordings and advanced alerts but do not want a subscription.
- You need local storage or a broader smart-home ecosystem than Ring provides.
- A lower-cost Ring doorbell would meet your actual needs.
Lower-cost Ring and non-Ring alternatives
Ring’s Battery Doorbell (2nd Gen) is a lower-cost option with 2K video and a built-in rechargeable battery, but it omits some of the Plus and Pro conveniences and premium features. It may be enough for basic Ring coverage.
If you have wiring, compare current wired Ring models in the Ring catalog before committing to battery maintenance. For readers who want a different ecosystem, Google Nest Doorbells suit Google Home households, while Arlo and eufy offer alternative camera and storage ecosystems. Their current subscription rules and model-specific features should be checked separately.
Final verdict
Buy the Ring Battery Doorbell Plus (2nd Gen) for value. It is the sensible choice for most normal porches and provides the essential battery-powered Ring experience at a lower price.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Buy the Ring Battery Doorbell Pro (2nd Gen) only when its upgrades solve a real problem: a long approach, frequent zooming, difficult motion patterns, a need for Bird’s Eye mapping, Color Pre-Roll, or a preference for the highest-end Ring battery model.
At a $70 list-price gap, the Pro can be justified for the right property. If the Plus is temporarily discounted, it is probably the better purchase for most households. If you already have compatible wiring, compare a wired doorbell as well—the best upgrade may be avoiding battery maintenance rather than buying the more expensive battery model.
