These are not interchangeable ratings. A maximum thickness on one material or process does not establish the same result on another, and a stated maximum does not tell you the cut quality, speed, repeatability or finish you will get on your stock. Ask xTool for the operating conditions behind the figure that matches your intended work, and request a sample or demonstration using comparable material and joint or cut requirements before committing.
Can the MetalFab cut without the CNC attachment?
The CNC cutter is designed to work exclusively with the integrated laser source in MetalFab 800W and 1200W systems. It is not described as a generic standalone cutting platform or as compatible with arbitrary laser sources.

Safety and service are major purchase criteria
xTool identifies the MetalFab working laser as Class 4, with a wavelength of 1080 nm ± 10 nm. Class 4 direct or reflected laser exposure can create immediate eye and skin hazards, and the laser can present a fire hazard. xTool designates the assembled welder/CNC system for professional use. Familiarity with hobby laser engravers is not a substitute for the training, controlled work area and safety procedures required for this equipment.
Before operation, read the current MetalFab manual and follow xTool’s safety instructions, along with applicable local workplace and laser-safety requirements. xTool’s safety article says the product is not user-serviceable and should be returned to the factory or repaired by authorized professionals.
