PVC elbow and earbud parts

Fit and page contact
There are no source-backed dimensions for a universal fit. Choose an opening that feels comfortable rather than tight, and consider how the holder sits on the books you use. As practical, untested advice, check that the edges are smooth and that the contact points do not snag pages or obscure the text. A shape that works on one book may not contact the pages well on another.
- Thumb opening: Make room for comfortable movement and avoid a fit that pinches.
- Page contact: Aim for stable contact on both sides without pressing over words you need to read.
- Width: Consider whether the shape can keep the book open to the spread you prefer; a narrow contact piece may limit how widely the book stays open.
Consider a documented 3D-printed assistive holder
Makers Making Change describes its One Handed Book Holder as an inexpensive 3D-printed device intended to make it easier to hold a book open with one hand. The project identifies people with limited hand dexterity or use of only one hand as potential users; it does not establish a medical benefit.

Those are that model page’s recommendations, not universal settings. Its Standard Digital File License says the digital and printed versions may not be sold, rented, hosted, transferred, or distributed. Review the license for any model you choose.

- If you want to make something from available materials, start with one of the simple forms described above and judge comfort and page contact by fit.
- If you want a documented design intended for one-handed use, review the Makers Making Change files or its build-request option.
- If you already have a 3D printer, compare models by thumb fit, how they contact pages, whether they can be adjusted, and the model’s license terms.
- If making or printing is inconvenient, consider a commercially available plastic thumb ring book holder.
Branwyn described wanting a way to hold books and tablets in bed because arthritis affected his hands and arms. That is his stated motivation, not evidence that a particular holder treats pain or is suitable for every reader.
