Ferrolic is a clock designed by Zelf Koelman that uses magnets to move ferrofluid into shifting, creature-like forms as it displays the time. The “little caterpillars” are a visual impression—not living organisms or a biological effect—and the display is unlike a conventional clock face.
What Ferrolic is—and why it looks alive
Ferrolic is a design clock whose display is made from ferrofluid, a magnetic liquid. Rather than showing time with fixed numerals or hands, the clock moves and reshapes the fluid. Its gathering and dispersing forms can resemble small, elegant creatures; that resemblance comes from the motion and shape of the fluid.
Designer Zelf Koelman described the idea this way, as reproduced by Make: “Ferrolic was designed from a strong fascination for the magical material Ferro Fluid. The natural dynamics of this fluid makes that this display bridges the gap between everyday digital screens and tangible reality.”

Magnetic movement creates the display
In Make:’s 2015 account, magnets encased in Ferrolic’s aluminum frame control the ferrofluid, moving it to render the current time. The changing patterns give the display its distinctive fluid, animated appearance.

What ferrofluid is
Ferrotec describes ferrofluid generally as a stable colloidal suspension of magnetic nanoparticles in a liquid carrier, with a dispersing agent to help keep the particles suspended. Formulations vary, so one ferrofluid should not be assumed interchangeable with another or suitable for every use.
Reported controls
Make: reported in 2015 that Ferrolic connected over Wi-Fi and that its display could be controlled through a browser on a phone or tablet. Those are historical reported features, not verified current specifications.

What is known about Ferrolic’s production and availability
Make: reported in September 2015 that 24 clocks had been produced and gave a price of €7,500. Those figures describe the situation reported at that time; they do not establish a current price, production run, or offer to buy.
The same article said regular use could shorten the fluid’s lifetime to a few months and reported separate replacement modules. Current availability of those modules has not been verified. Ferrolic’s current sales and service status is unresolved.

A separate ferrofluid clock listing from MTR Designs showed sold out when crawled, but that is a different product and does not establish whether Ferrolic is available. Its stock status should not be treated as permanent.

For a hands-on way to see magnetic-fluid patterns, Ferrotec’s educational ferrofluid kit is a relevant demonstration product. Ferrotec warns that its educational-grade fluid should not be used in loudspeaker applications.

What to check before choosing a ferrofluid product
- Does the item actually tell time, or is it a science demonstration?
- Is the ferrofluid visible and magnetically actuated?
- Is current availability confirmed for the specific item, rather than inferred from an old article or a separate product listing?
- For a kit, do its contents and stated intended uses fit the activity you have in mind?
