It is the better choice for a new Google Home installation or a household that wants flexibility beyond Google—but only if your door is compatible and you already have the required Matter hub and Thread border router.
For an existing Nest × Yale owner, replacement is not urgent if the old lock, Nest Connect and Google Home integration remain reliable. The new Yale adds a physical key, easier setup and a more future-proof architecture; it does not make every smart-home platform behave identically or eliminate the need for home-network infrastructure.

What this “sequel” actually is
Despite its obvious lineage, this is not a new Google-branded Nest lock. The product is called the Yale Smart Lock with Matter. Yale manufactures and sells it, while Google positions it as a preferred Google Home product and the practical successor to the Nest × Yale Lock launched in 2018.

That change in branding reflects a larger architectural change. The original lock used Nest’s Weave-based system and depended on a Nest Connect bridge for Wi-Fi and cloud connectivity. The new model uses the industry-standard Matter protocol over Thread. Google has moved from a bespoke Nest product to a Yale-made lock that fits its current standards-based smart-home strategy.

The new lock includes a keypad, a conventional keyhole, an interior thumbturn and Yale’s DoorSense sensor for detecting whether the door is open or closed. It uses four AA batteries, and Yale and Google claim up to 12 months of battery life. That is a manufacturer claim, not a duration independently established by the review period.
The exterior is more contemporary and is designed to sit comfortably alongside a Nest Doorbell. Available finishes listed by Google include Snow, Matte Black and Ash. Google lists external dimensions of approximately 0.88 × 2.56 × 5.38 inches and a weight of 3 pounds.

Matter gives the lock a common language for supported smart-home platforms. In principle, that means the same hardware can be commissioned into Google Home and potentially shared with Apple Home, Alexa or SmartThings instead of being permanently tied to Nest’s older system.
It also provides a path toward local control through a compatible home hub. Commands do not necessarily need to travel through a manufacturer-specific cloud service for every operation. And because the lock is based on a standard rather than a discontinued Nest product line, it is less exposed to the risk of Google abandoning another bespoke hardware arrangement.
Google Home setup is also simpler in the hands-on review than the old Nest Connect process. Access codes and vacation mode were available from Google Home without requiring a separate Yale app for the tested workflow.
But “Matter” does not mean “works everywhere with no setup.” The lock still requires a Matter controller or hub and a Thread border router. Some Google devices perform both jobs, but buyers should verify the exact model and current software support. Google and Yale identify devices such as the Nest Hub (2nd Gen), Nest Hub Max and Nest Wifi Pro as relevant Google Matter/Thread infrastructure. See Google’s current product requirements before buying.

Your network should also have IPv6 enabled. Google warns that Matter setup or later control can fail when IPv6 is unavailable, and the review encountered pairing problems until IPv6 was enabled. A Matter lock is not simply a Wi-Fi lock that can be added to any router.
Installation: conventional deadbolt replacement, with one important warning
Physical installation follows the familiar smart-lock pattern:
- Remove the existing deadbolt.
- Check the door thickness, backset and hole alignment.
- Install the exterior keypad and interior lock assembly.
- Fit the DoorSense magnet.
- Install the supplied strike plate.
- Insert the four AA batteries.
- Test and calibrate the lock with the door open, then closed.
- Scan the Matter QR code in Google Home.
- Set up users, access codes, alerts and remote access.
The review estimated roughly 15–20 minutes for the physical installation when working on a familiar, compatible door. That should not be treated as a universal installation time. A warped door, a badly aligned strike plate or an unfamiliar deadbolt can turn a quick replacement into a much longer job.
Before ordering, verify the current Yale installation documentation for your region. Google’s published Nest × Yale compatibility guidance provides a useful baseline: compatible doors were listed at 13⁄8 inches, 13⁄4 inches or 2–21⁄4 inches thick, with a 23⁄8-inch or 23⁄4-inch backset. A deadbolt more than 23⁄4 inches from the door edge was not considered compatible under that guidance. The original guidance covered wood, metal and fiberglass doors, but excluded glass and sliding doors, mortise locks and multipoint locks. Do not assume those dimensions apply identically to every Yale Matter model.
Alignment matters more than the app. If the bolt rubs against the strike plate, the motor may strain, fail to lock or jam. Google’s installation guidance recommends correcting the door and strike alignment and calibrating the lock with the door in the appropriate position.
Setting it up in Google Home
Once the hardware is installed, commissioning is performed by scanning the Matter QR code in Google Home. The practical checklist is:
- A compatible Android or iOS phone.
- The current Google Home app and a Google Account.
- A Matter controller/hub assigned to the home.
- A Thread border router with adequate coverage near the lock.
- IPv6 enabled on the home network.
- Up-to-date firmware for the Google hub and network equipment.
Thread is a low-power mesh network, not a replacement for the home network itself. The border router connects that mesh to the household network, while the Matter controller manages the device in the smart-home platform. One Google product may provide both functions, but the roles are distinct.

- KEY-FREE ENTRY MADE SIMPLE: No app. No phone setup. No Wi-Fi. This Yale lock is a straightforward keyless deadbolt lock that lets you ditch the keys without the tech learning curve. Just install, create your codes, and go.
- SHARE ACCESS YOUR WAY: No more hiding spare keys. Create up to 20 unique entry codes directly on your electronic door lock. Give family their own code, let the dog walker in, or set one for the neighbor who waters your plants.
- WONDERING IF YOU LOCKED UP? Rush out the door without a second thought. Auto-Lock secures the deadbolt behind you so you never have to wonder if you remembered to lock up.
- BUILT FOR EVERYDAY USE: The backlit keypad makes code entry easy day or night. And if you ever want a traditional option, a backup key is included for peace of mind.
- ENGINEERED FOR RELIABILITY: Grade 3 certified by BHMA for residential-grade durability. Built to perform from -22°F winters to 140°F summer heat. Low-power alerts let you know when batteries are running low.
If setup succeeds but control is unreliable, start with IPv6, hub availability and Thread coverage. Update Google Home and the hub, restart the router, hub and lock, and retry commissioning with the QR or setup code. Moving the lock or border router closer may also help.

The review found locking and unlocking over Matter responsive. The motor generally produced two audible whirs followed by a confirmation chime, and phone notifications confirmed whether an action succeeded. The keypad responded to code entry, while the capacitive Yale sensor/button provided another way to interact when leaving.
The physical keyhole is a significant practical difference from the original lock. It gives homeowners a conventional fallback if batteries die or the smart-home system fails. Some buyers will consider that essential; others will see it as a retreat from the original’s completely keyless exterior.
Google Home can provide:
- Permanent codes for residents.
- Temporary or scheduled access for guests, cleaners, contractors and dog walkers.
- Start and end dates and, where supported, day or time restrictions.
- Remote lock and unlock.
- Activity history.
- Lock-activity and failed-entry alerts where supported.
- Vacation mode.
In the reviewed Google Home implementation, vacation mode disabled keypad entry while leaving app and physical-key access available. Google’s support documentation says relevant Google Home activity history can remain available for up to 60 days, although labels, retention and controls can change with the app and controller.
The review also encountered a short-lived issue in which Google Home’s one-tap unlock still requested a PIN. Clearing Google Home app storage resolved that problem in the test. Treat this as a reported software issue and a possible troubleshooting step, not as a universal defect or guaranteed fix.

“Matter” does not mean “no hub required,” and local operation is not the same as remote access.
The keypad and physical key can remain usable when the internet or smart-home service is unavailable. Remote control, notifications and other cloud-dependent functions may not work if the home hub, network or internet connection is down. A lock that works locally but cannot be operated remotely is behaving differently from a lock that has lost all power or has a mechanical alignment problem.

- Secure smart lock for your front door; replaces the deadbolt lock you already have
- Keyless entry on the LED keypad so you can lock and unlock your front door without a key; keypad chimes play sounds to confirm responses, such as locking, unlocking, or turning Privacy Mode on or off
- Let someone in from anywhere; unlock the door with your phone for easy guest access
- Give unique passcode to family and guests and set a schedule to control when they work; when you don’t want to be disturbed, Privacy Mode disables the keypad so it can’t be unlocked with a passcode
- Get alerts when someone locks or unlocks the door or tries to tamper with your smart door lock
That distinction matters for households with unreliable Wi-Fi. The Yale Matter lock may still be a sensible mechanical and keypad lock, but its smart features depend on correctly configured Matter and Thread infrastructure.
Is it better than the Nest × Yale Lock?
For a new purchase, yes—assuming the door and smart-home setup are compatible. The old lock’s strongest advantage is that it may already work perfectly in a home with Nest Connect. It also preserves the original key-free exterior, which some owners prefer.

Its disadvantages are increasingly difficult to ignore. The Nest × Yale Lock was reported discontinued in early 2025, and Google removed it from its active Store lineup in July 2026. Nest Connect remains important for app and remote connectivity; Nest Guard is no longer supported as its bridge. If an existing owner loses cloud connectivity, the keypad can still operate locally, but app-based remote control will not work without the appropriate bridge and connection. See Google’s support documentation for the legacy setup.
Google continues to document the old lock and has expanded aspects of its Google Home integration, including richer controls rolling out in 2026. It is therefore not accurate to call the Nest × Yale unusable. It is simply a weaker long-term purchase because its hardware and bridge model are legacy products.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should buy the Yale Smart Lock with Matter?
Buy it if you are building a new Google Home system
This is the closest current equivalent to a Google-native Yale lock. You get keypad access, remote control, activity information, guest codes and a physical-key fallback without buying a discontinued Nest product.
Buy it if you are replacing a failing Nest × Yale
The case is particularly strong if Nest Connect is unreliable, unavailable or inconveniently located, or if the old keypad, battery compartment or lock hardware is aging.
Consider it if your household may change platforms
Matter gives Apple Home, Alexa and SmartThings households a potential path to use the same lock. However, the available hands-on review tested Google Home, not those other ecosystems. Matter compatibility in principle does not guarantee identical scheduling, notifications, vacation-mode behavior or activity details in every app.

- MORE WAYS TO ENTER: Hands full of groceries? This keyless entry door lock recognizes when you’re home and unlocks automatically. For everyone else, there’s a touchscreen keypad, full smartphone and Apple Watch control, or a backup key.
- CONTROL FROM ANYWHERE: This electronic door lock puts home security in your pocket — connecting directly to 2.4 or 5 GHz Wi-Fi without a hub or bridge. Lock up, let someone in, and get real-time alerts with the Yale Access app (US & Canada Only).

Keep the old lock if it still does exactly what you need
An upgrade is harder to justify when your Nest × Yale, Nest Connect and door hardware are reliable, you do not need another platform, and you prefer a key-free exterior. The new model is a better strategic product, but replacing a working lock still costs money and creates installation work.
Look elsewhere if your door uses mortise or multipoint hardware
This Yale is a conventional keypad deadbolt replacement, not a universal solution for every entry door. Renters may also prefer a retrofit design that preserves the existing exterior hardware, such as an appropriate August model. Buyers prioritizing fingerprint entry, a different hardware format or another connectivity design should compare exact Schlage, August and Yale models rather than treating each brand as one uniform product category. Yale’s Matter support page is model- and firmware-specific.
Price and total system cost
The review listed the Yale Smart Lock with Matter at $189 on September 22, 2025. That is a dated review price, not a current quotation. Store availability, retailer discounts and regional pricing change, so check the product page before purchase.
More importantly, calculate the complete system cost. If you do not already have a compatible Matter hub and Thread border router, buying the lock may also require new home infrastructure. A cheaper lock that works with equipment you already own can be better value than a Matter lock plus a new hub purchased for one door.
Final recommendation
The Yale Smart Lock with Matter is the successor the Nest × Yale Lock needed. Its physical-key backup, modern hardware and Google Home controls are useful, but Matter over Thread is the central reason to choose it. The architecture is more portable, less tied to Google’s discontinued Nest hardware strategy and better suited to a mixed smart home.
Buy it when your door is a compatible deadbolt, your home already has the necessary Matter and Thread equipment, and you value Google Home access management or future platform flexibility. Keep a reliable Nest × Yale when its mature setup still meets your needs. For everyone else, the right comparison is not “new Nest lock versus old Nest lock,” but this Yale’s complete Matter system cost and feature set versus the exact Schlage, August or Yale alternative that fits your door.
